Among the several questions about the subject and its occurrences in the literary text, the present study intends to search how this theme is represented in the novel; that is, how it is built and represented in the aporias of the romanesque, the relationships it maintains with what is external to the text (history, society), in what it interferes in the narrative construction and in the form of the novel and which questions they arise, are some of the propositions involved in a reading of All the Names, by Jos? Saramago and N?o entres t?o depressa nessa noite escura, by Ant?nio Lobo Antunes. These novels have been chosen because they are related, respectively, to two of the main trends about the form of the novel: one more integrated to an objective view and a second one more integrated to a subjective tradition. Without abolishing the specificities, but aware that the relationship between the subjective and the objective is not a dichotomy because the gap between these two forms is basically the novelist?s distinct way of perception about reality, these two different positions are considered in order to deal with equally diverse specificities of the figuration of the subject in the novel. Thus, this thesis is divided in three following parts: (1) a review of how the novel has built a conception of subject since the rupture with the epic. This review privileges three different moments in the history of the novel: the epic, the realist verve of the 19th Century and the novel moved by the 1920s new forms. This exercise is helped by the readings of Krysinski (2007), Luc?ks (2009), Z?raffa (2010), Candido (2007), Rosenfeld (1996), Adorno (2003), Benjamin (2012) among others; (2) reading All the Names and peering into the main characters of the novel ? Senhor Jos?, the unknown woman, the registrar, the right ground floor lady and the space of the Central Registry that is taken as a support in this universe; (3) considering the aforementioned exercise, the reading of N?o entres t?o depressa nessa noite escura peers into the characters Lu?s Filipe, Margarida, Am?lia, Ana Maria e Maria Clara. Among the intersections between the two books, there is the understanding that the novel is an artifact of knowledge about the subject as a figuration of its positions occupied in the contemporary world; both books understand the imminent end of a civilization by the damaged collectivity and life becoming invariable repetition. At least two other different means of rupture with this catastrophic condition are exposed: the subject is action and has to face the world (Jos? Saramago); the non-exclusively social disarray is individual and the subject is the waiting while he mends the possible situations to understand human degradation (Ant?nio Lobo Antunes). Both books are responsible for reaffirming the interest of the novel in the most reluctant and silent existences, once they understand these existences hide an ability of reanimation whose revelation is a task of the novelist.

This research aims to investigate the process of stylistic construction in novelistic prose of Northeastern Brazilian writter Jos? Bezerra Gomes, taking as a corpus his novel called A porta e o vento. The theoretical foundations supporting this study are related to the ideas disseminated by a group of linguistic researchers known as Bakhtin Circle, especially the notions of dialogic language, literary word, concrete utterance, social voices, and sociological style/stylistic. Concerning to methodological guidance, this work is characterized by adopting the interpretive paradigm of socio-historical background, still situated in the great field of Applied Linguistics, an undisciplinary area of research and frontier whose primary focus is concrete and situated language. The analysis allowed me to hear several social voices embodied therein, realizing a variety of dialogs, numerous worldviews in constant struggle, that due to the management and the finish given by the author, eventually create a tone, a unique composition compared to other discourses and current styles in his midst. Ideological clashes are evident: the voice of tradition versus particular character Santos? voice regarding the institution of marriage; confrontation between antagonistic hinterland pictures - a living hinterland (rich and diverse) as opposed to the stereotypical notion of hinterland (poor and sterile); and the door and the wind as a metaphor of a fighting arena and a hint of poeticization of the language of prose. The main feature of Bezerra?s style in A porta e o vento is related to the aforesaid modes dialogization voices present in the novel. Therefore, one can found veiled polemic, dialogical replicas and veiled dialogues, which are categories already discussed in Bakhtin's theory, but also other new modes dialogization, grounded in the dynamics of living and concrete language

The aim of this work is to build a historical biography of Jos? Le?o Ferreira Souto (1850 - 1904), a republican born in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and from there analyze the gestation of a potiguar identity in the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. It is intended, first, to understand how social and political relations were woven that allowed Jose Leon to adjectivize an identity to a specific people, linked to a space, Rio Grande do Norte; and, second, to realize as a concrete subject, who lived the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, left his small province and approached thoughts and ideologies that come from Europe and emerging still in a limited way in Brazil. Throughout the text will be sought to demonstrate that this potiguar identity was gestated in Rio de Janeiro and was directly linked to movements of thinkers who lived through the transition from Empire to Republic. For the execution of the work was done a mapping of biographical studies in Brazil, highlighting the works of Adriana Souza and Benito Bisso. From a theoretical point of view the work is anchored in contemporary biographical studies, among which stand out Sabina Loriga and Fran?ois Dosse. Research sources are organized from materials dispersed in various cities and had not yet been systematized, composed of three types of documents, namely the written production of Jos? Le?o Ferreira Souto; productions written by other authors that make references to it; and finally the productions written by others without even making references to Jos? Le?o bring explanatory material about the time he lived and on the ideas produced. This study presents three basic conclusions: the biography of a concrete subject shows that European ideas that arrived in Brazil in the nineteenth century were not simply imported because there were elements of internal disputes favoring continuous adjustments to the original assumptions; the building of a potiguar identity was gestated in Rio de Janeiro from positivist principles; Existed in the early years of the Republic, groups (silenced by memory) that made opposition to the oligarchies, surpassing the interpretation that the local oligarchies had ?superpowers?.

The imaginary universe of Jacques Benoit

Sherman, Alan James January 1989 (has links)
This thesis is a study of three of the.literary works of Jacques Benoit: Jos Carbone, Les Princes and Gisèle et le serpent. It will be an attempt to combine different spatial elements of the texts, literal and symbolic, in order to define and explore the imaginary universe of our author. In our first text, Jos Carbone, we look to establish the role of the unconscious. The background predominance of night and dark elements, unseen invaders, habitations, in short, the forest in general appears as a metaphor for the unconscious mind of the hero Jos Carbone. In our analysis, we attempt to explore this imaginary universe with intent to establish the theme of the territorial quest as it might apply to the central couple Jos and Myrtie. In our analysis of Benoit's novel, Les Princes, we endeavour to explore the allegorical world with an emphasis on the nonverbal communication of both the topography and the inhabitants of la Ville. We observe the confrontation of men and dogs in an effort to examine the role of what is considered civil or animal, pet or prey. The impotency and frustration of Coquin society coupled with corrupt Grâligean authority evoke the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau on social inequality. We shall, therefore, attempt to apply some of his beliefs to imaginary elements of the novel. Finally, we shall examine the unvoiced refutation of the Grâligean's verbal law and the possible future outcome of la Ville's violent upheaval. Gisèle et le serpent will be studied in terms of a creative quest to write on the part of the hero and narrator, Gregoire Rabouin. We will take into account the displacement, transformation and constant motion of the text as well as the combination of fantastic and conventional elements. The role of the protagonist Gisèle is to be examined in terms of her capacity as role model, motivation to write and magical force behind the liberation of the hero's creative drive. We shall show the conflict created by the doctor's frustration with his rational profession and examine the unblocking of his creativity as portrayed by his relinquishing of control. Furthermore, an analysis of the parodies of his occupation, the deformation of language and patients as well as the fairy-tale format of the novel will confirm his desire to renounce medicine in favour of literary creation. Finally, we see the completion of Rabouin's narrative voyage in the discovery of his ability to write. In conclusion we shall state general observations about the imaginary universe as it applies to the comparison of our three texts. Specifically, this will entail the unconscious world, the violent and disruptive element and Benoit's tendency to stray from the rules of standard literary genres. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

The Dietary Decision-Making Process of Women in Nigeria

Mapis, Gachomo Joanne 01 January 2020 (has links)
Nigerians have been opting for a more processed Western diet. These changes in dietary choices have aligned with obesity and undernutrition, attributable to micronutrient deficiencies or malnutrition. Many scholars have presented varying intervention strategies ranging from consumption of a variety of foods containing the necessary micronutrients to food fortification. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore the perceptions of women in an urban city in Nigeria on indigenous foods and Western dietary influences to determine social interactions, the consequence of the interactions, and the women’s current perceptions of food choices. The social-ecological model was used to explore the interaction between a woman and her environment. Women between the ages of 20 to 30 from the urban city of Jos, Nigeria, constituted the population of interest, and 12 women were chosen for the sample. From the in-depth interviews, a thematic analysis was employed to provide sociocontextual reasoning for changes in diet that have led to the loss of interest in traditional foods and cultures. This study found that Jos has a variety of foods, yet women choose the same staple foods to feed their families. Additionally, despite a marginal understanding of the health impact of diet, most women choose the convenience and palatability of Western options, citing cost as the rationale for choosing to cook staple Western-inspired meals at home. Understanding media, convenience, and cost can impact social change by enlightening communities on the interconnectedness of human health, cultures, and industrialization. Health care providers can monitor the outcomes of those who consume a variety of indigenous foods to see how such a practice could influence the overall health status of Nigerian families.

Identity Politics, Indigene-Settler Dynamics and their Implications for Democracy in Jos, Nigeria

Katu, Barry A. January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the politics of identity construction in contemporary Jos, Nigeria, over a 30-year period (1991-2021). It focuses on the narratives surrounding the Jos City conflict, which primarily revolve around identity issues. While previous literature mainly explores the conflict along ethnic, religious, and ethnoreligious lines, recent discussions have shifted towards the indigene-settler divide. In navigating resource distribution, groups strategically adopt identities to access influence, resulting in the construction and reconstruction of identities. The macro-level conflict involves the Hausa-Fulani against the Berom, Anaguta, and Afizere, while micro-level dynamics emerge among indigenous groups, centring on territory, government participation, and leadership. Identity choices often exploit minority sentiments and target the scope of support and acceptability, drawing attention to discrimination in exclusionary indigeneity politics. Histories of internal migration significantly contribute to the Jos City conflict, with spillover effects in other parts of Nigeria, impacting democracy and democratization processes. To address the conflict's root causes, the government has established panels and commissions. Through qualitative methods and case studies involving 63 participants, this study highlights historical narratives of migration, inheritance, place claims, and place naming. These claims fuel the prominence of identity politics in daily discourse. The thesis provides empirical contributions to our understanding of Jos' politics, filling a significant knowledge gap.

Society in Rome, the P. Manuel da N?brega, left Lisbon with the armed Tom? de Souza to conduct the West Portuguese missions. In 1553, after forming the first Brazilian missions Ba?a de Todos os Santos where they landed, he continued to the Captainship of S?o Vicente where he covered the south coast of colonial Brazil. After that, going up through Serra do Mar, N?brega lead the foundation of Aldeia de Piratininga and its school, Col?gio de S?o Paulo, and posteriorly, he enabled the beginning of new entries to the interior of the continent. The implementation of these schools originated the villages or urban areas such as Vila de S?o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Vit?ria, afterwards becoming centers of irradiation of colonial expansion forming small network localities. The sites related to these schools and Jesuit? churches and settlements designed to reduce Indian population formed the architectonic sites of the settlements, while the organization of the lodges focused to give support to evangelization and the introduction of Indians to Portuguese life system. This work intends to analyze the acting of Jesus? Society according to the purpose of Portuguese colonizers during the XVI century until half of XVII century, before the pombal political expulsion, and the logic of expansion in the Captainships in the south of Brazilian territory in the colonial period, focusing on territorial expansion accomplished after the influence of Col?gio de S?o Paulo, and Vila de S?o Jos? dos Campos in Vale do Parna?ba and Fazenda de Botucatu in the west side of the Captainship as being the last two stronghold of Jesuit? presence in the territory of colonial period. To accomplish that there will be a support on historiography and analysis of Jesuits letters besides other studies about the rise and expansion of the settlements based on antique and contemporary cartographies demonstrating the presence of Jesuits in the mentioned territory. / Em 1549, logo ap?s a aprova??o da Companhia de Jesus em Roma, o P. The analysis of the texts that make up the corpus has privileged, from each one of the texts, which can be related with three themes: man/ideology, man/past and man/literature. Based on the theoretical formulations, especially the one?s by Paul Ricoeur and Javier del Prado Biezma, this study demonstrates the identification of recurrent thematic fields in the narrative and structural marks left by the Self in the texts. These aspects made it possible to trace the presence of the subject that is expressed through writing and also the definition of a Saramago?s autobiographical space.
