A Study of the Library Use Practices of High School Students in Three East Tennessee Counties.

Clabo, Carrie A. 04 May 2002 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine how and why high school students use the library and its resources. It examined how teachers influence students' use of library resources. The participants were 11th-grade students attending public high schools in 3 east Tennessee counties. Participants completed a survey based on library use. Although 350 students were invited to participate in the study, only 130 returned the permission slip, resulting in a 37% response rate. Eleven respondents were asked to participate in a short interview to supplement and add qualitative clarification to the findings. The findings were descriptive in nature, although basic analyses were calculated to identify any relationships between the different variables. A literature review examined the historical development of the library, the purpose of the library, challenges to the role of the library, research in the library science field, influences on library use, library use and academic achievement, studies of library users and nonusers, and lifestyle variables relating to library use. The study's identification of library use patterns and high school students' attitudes about their use of the library could assist librarians in making long range plans for their libraries. These plans could include the identification of materials to purchase, areas in which students need assistance in completing projects, or recreational materials to read. Ultimately, the findings could assist librarians in the development of cooperative programs between school and public libraries to reduce the overlapping of information while increasing student use of the library. The study found most students visited the library at an early age with their mothers, although not on a regular basis. They were more likely to visit the school library than the public library; the primary reason being to locate information to complete school assignments. Parents and English teachers were the most influential in encouraging library use, although teachers had more influence on female students than male students. Female students also visited the library on a more frequent basis.

Developing a Writing Group for Librarians: The Benefits of Successful Collaboration

Campbell, Kathy, Ellis, Mark, Adebonojo, Leslie 30 December 2011 (has links)
Purpose: Research productivity is often counted as a major factor in evaluations and promotion. Librarians have had to find a way to pursue research along with performing job duties and professional service. Collaborative research can provide an effective solution for busy librarians who need to show a record of research. Additionally, it can be a cost‐effective means for library administrators to promote library faculty output in the face of reduced travel and research budgets. This paper seeks to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach: In developing their research group, the authors began with a small, informal collaboration on an article describing new staffing models for library outreach. As the writing of the article proceeded, the group developed a more formal structure. As that article reached completion, the purpose of the group expanded to that of fostering creativity and following creative leads to a publishable (or presentable) conclusion. Findings: In the two years during which the writing group has been working together, it has produced four articles and nine presentations, with several in‐progress efforts. In addition, the writing group has encouraged members to develop individual projects for presentation and publication outside of the group's scope. Practical implications: The authors offer recommendations to other professionals interested in forming collaborative writing groups and to library administrators interested in encouraging their staffs to develop productive working relationships. Originality/value: Few articles have been written about collaboration among librarians to promote their own research and publication. The authors describe in this paper an informal, yet highly effective means to foster faculty research productivity.

Des professionnalités à l'épreuve de la réforme des rythmes scolaires : quand le jeu questionne les pratiques des enseignants et des animateurs / Professionality in reform of rhythm of schooling : when play questions teachers and activity coordinators’ practices

Desvages, Vanessa 07 June 2018 (has links)
This research questions teachers’ professionality and activity coordinators’ professionality who must share education field since reform of rhythm of schooling in 2013. We examine their personal practices of gaming with clinical didactic because analysis can’t forget the subject. We want to see the different ways of playing wondering about the subject’s relationship to the game and about its effect on playing games. Our hypotheses are those personal experiences and the other one influence professional practices of play. We are introducing here four case studies; comparisons are made between themselves to identify tensions in practices of play and in their professional identity construction. We compare these case studies to community discussions: a discussion with a group of activity coordinators and with a group of teachers. These comparisons show how the subject appropriates his group’s history and how he builds relationship to the other one.

Stjärnkvist, Hanna January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to examine how librarians perceive library plans, if they are important for their work and if so, in what ways. In order to analyze this, I have used a phenomenographic approach. My goal, by using this method, is to uncover perceptions and variations among these. The research questions are: What variations of perception of library plans exist among librarians? To what extent can the varied perceptions of library plans be linked to librarians' work? What does the variation of perception say, in relation to the expectations expressed in international and national documents, about library plans? The material used in a phenomenographic analysis consists of interviews. These are analyzed in several steps, which result in categories, so called description categories. My conclusion is, that there are three different ways of perceiving library plans: as steering documents, legitimizing documents and visionary documents. The first category incorporates the impact the library plan has on the actual work. In the second category they use it as a way to show why the library and the profession are needed. The third category is about library plans being visionary documents. These do not develop the work at all. The perceptions are to a great extent in line with the expectations expressed in international and national documents concerning library plans. The library plan is according to these a guideline for managing the library and its services, a way to show its necessity and to assure equal quality among library services.

Bibliotheksdirektoren im Nationalsozialismus

Hermann, Konstantin 19 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Bibliotekos svarba ugdymo procesui / The library importance for the education process /

Štreimikienė, Jolanta 04 September 2008 (has links)
2. Atskleisti bibliotekos, kaip mokymosi aplinkos, ypatybes. 3. Įvertinti bibliotekininko vaidmenį ugdymo procese. 4. Ištirti bibliotekos įtaką ugdymo procesui. / The topic of the work is “The Library Importance for the Education Process”. Grigas, Vincas 16 December 2013 (has links)
Disertacijoje siekiama teoriškai pagrįsti ir sukurti bibliotekininko edukatoriaus ugdymo koncepcinį modelį profesionalius bibliotekininkus rengiančioje aukštosios mokyklos studijų programoje. Tikslui pasiekti išanalizuotas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus poreikis besimokančioje visuomenėje bei apibrėžta bibliotekininko edukatoriaus samprata, vaidmuo, gebėjimų visuma ugdant informacinį raštingumą; nustatyta dabartinė bibliotekininkų edukatorių rengimo būklė, susiejant ją su besimokančios visuomenės poreikiais bei sukonstruotas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus ugdymo koncepcinis modelis; įvertintas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus ugdymo koncepcinio modelio validumas realioje aplinkoje ir pasiūlytas šio modelio praktinis taikymas profesionalius bibliotekininkus rengiančioje aukštosios mokyklos studijų programoje. The 21st century academic library: the case of three state universities in Zimbabwe

Mabweazara, Rangarirai Moira January 2018 (has links)
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS / The advent of the 21st century and its dynamic information environment have changed higher education considerably including the library spaces. Library patrons, namely undergraduates, postgraduates, and academics are placing heavy demands on academic libraries requiring support in research, teaching and learning. As a result, academic librarians globally have undertaken major re-evaluations of what they do and how they do it, to ensure relevance amongst their diverse user communities. The new information landscape is fraught with controversies that prompt opposing perspectives towards change acceptance amongst librarians. In Zimbabwe, academic libraries seemed to be lagging behind regarding changes presented by this information landscape. Given this context, the study sought to understand how librarians are adjusting to the 21st century environment against the expectations of the students and academics. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory crafted by Rogers (2003) and the McKinsey 7S model propounded by Waterman, Peters and Phillips (1982) were used as theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The research further applied a conceptual framework from the literature to determine the expectations of students and academics of the academic library in the 21st century. For data collection, the study adopted a case study design and a mixed methods approach using Web-based questionnaires, follow-up interviews and website content analysis. Data was collected from students, academics and librarians at three selected Zimbabwean universities. All data collecting tools were pre-tested amongst librarians, academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students prior to collecting data. Data collected using questionnaires was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel while interview data was analysed using thematic text analysis. Findings of this study revealed that the Midlands State University Library had to a larger extent embraced new trends which are in-line with the 21st century environment compared to the National University of Science and Technology and Lupane State University libraries. The Library and Information Science qualification remains important in service delivery among academic librarians. Inadequate funding, limited time due to multitasking, slow uptake of new concepts and limited knowledge and skills were barriers to keeping up with new trends amongst librarians. Academic librarians collaborated with academics in collection development, Information Literacy Skills (ILS) teaching and uploading theses and research papers into the Institution Repository (IR). / 2018-12-14
