Tendo em vista a importância da discussão da questão do contato de línguas para os trabalhos sobre mudança lingüística, pensar a relação de línguas, não como algo circunstancial de uma situação de bilingüismo, mas como parte do funcionamento da língua, possibilitou que, a partir do conceito de espaço de enunciação, se apresentasse um outro modo de tratar a mudança, distinto daquele que as teorias lingüísticas têm apresentado. O espaço de enunciação se configura como um espaço de relação de línguas que funcionam sempre em relação a outras línguas se dividindo, se refazendo e se tornam outras. Mas em que sentido a língua se torna outra? Para dar materialidade a esses questionamentos, analisamos um espaço de enunciação particular, o de Friburgo, bairro de descendentes de alemães, localizado na divisa de Campinas com Indaiatuba. A partir da análise do material lingüístico coletado, foi possível atestar que pela relação do português com o alemão este se tornou materialmente outro. Levando em consideração a diferença desse alemão em relação ao alemão falado na Alemanha, discutimos, neste trabalho, os sentidos da mudança e o modo como isso afeta os falantes e a lingüística / Abstract: This thesis aims to discuss, from the concept of enunciation space, the relation of languages, and in this measure, linguistic change. Keeping in mind the importance of discussion about the question of language contact for works about linguistic change, to think in relation to languages, not as something circumstantial of a bilingual situation, but as part of the functioning of language, enabled that from the concept of enunciation space, another manner, distinct from what the other linguistic theories of approaching the change, would present itself. Enunciation space sets itself as a relation space of languages that always work in relation to other languages, dividing, remaking themselves and becoming others. But in what sense makes the language become another? In order to give materiality to these questions, we analyzed a particular enunciation space, Friburgo, a neighborhood of German descendants, located on the border of Campinas and Indaiatuba. From analysis of the linguistic material that was collected, it was possible to witness that through the relation of the Portuguese with German, it materially became another. Observamos também que, em todas as sessões, tais estruturas lingüísticas incidiam predominantemente em turnos que concentravam uma grande quantidade de palavras. Entretanto, confrontando as quantidades de palavras por turno das duas gravações, verificamos que os sujeitos analisados tiveram suas médias aumentadas, e, portanto, falavam mais e se corrigiam menos. Procurando atribuir esse fato ao funcionamento lingüístico desses sujeitos, observamos que a ocorrência de hesitações do tipo pausa silenciosa, alongamento e pausa preenchida ¿ que, conforme estudos lingüístico-discursivos sobre o mecanismo hesitativo na DP, representam uma tensão no discurso que contêm a deriva dos sentidos ¿ haviam aumentado, na segunda sessão, precisamente nos turnos em que as autocorreções tinham diminuído, ou seja, naqueles com uma grande quantidade de palavras. Vinculando as autocorreções descritas pelos estudos lingüísticos de base conversacional ao que chamamos de 'correção psicanalítica¿ entendemos que as correções envolveriam um 'enunciado fonte¿ (EF ¿ correspondente ao 'lapso¿) e um enunciado reformulador (ER ¿ correspondente à denegação). Já que o mecanismo da denegação supõe uma suspensão dos conteúdos irrepresentáveis, os EFs ligados a uma 'significação recalcada¿ ou um sintagma 'gramaticalmente incorreto¿ eram, na correção, negados por um ERs. Incluindo esse raciocínio na análise das variações e relações entre as correções e hesitações que havíamos observado, entendemos que a progressão da doença, em suas contraparte psíquica e orgânica, acarretaria um aumento de investimento na atividade motora do corpo, o que levaria nossos sujeitos a uma progressiva inibição dos EFs marcada linguisticamente pelos recursos hesitativos, o que, consequentemente, haveria ocasionado a diminuição quantitativa de suas correções / Abstract: From a comparative analysis between the self-corrections that occured on the speech of two individuals with Parkinson¿s Disease (PD) during two recorded conversation sessions, with a great amount of time between the first and the second , we could verify a remarkable decrease on the appearance of those linguistic marks. We could also observe that, in both sessions, those linguistic structures arised predominantly in turns of speech wich had a great number of words. However, confronting the quantity of words per speech turn on both recordings, we could observe that the analized individuals had their average increased, and, therefore, they spoke more and self-corrected less. Linking this fact to the linguistic functioning of those individuals, we observed that the occurance of hesitations named silence pause, stretching and filled pause ¿ which, according to speech-linguistic studies about the hesitative mechanism on PD, it means a tension on the speech wich holds back the drift of the meanings - had increased , on the second session, precisely at the speech turns where the self-corrections had already decreased, on those with a great number of words. Conecting the self-corrections described by the linguistic studies based on the conversation to what we call ¿psychoanalytic correction¿ we understand that the corrections would envolve a ¿source statement¿ (SS ¿ corresponding to ¿slip of the tongue¿) and ¿reformulater statement¿ (RS ¿ corresponding to denial). Once the denial mechanism supposes a withhold of the irrepresentable contents, the SSs linked to a ¿repressed signification¿ or to a ¿grammaticaly incorrect¿ syntagma were, in the corrections, denied by an RS. Including this reasoning on the relations and variations analysed between the corrections and hesitations we had observed, we understand that the disease¿s progression, in its psychical and organical ways, would bring about an increase on the cathexis of the body¿s motor activity, wich would lead the subject to a progressive inhibition of the SSs linguistically marked, by the hesitative resourses that, consequently, would have caused a decrease on their self-corrections / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Este trabalho apresenta uma análise discursiva de alguns aspectos do Diccionario integral del español de la Argentina (DIEA), produção lexicográfica publicada em 2008 na Argentina e considerada o primeiro dicionário não diferencial elaborado e publicado em um país hispano-americano. Ao tomarmos o DIEA como objeto de estudo, situamo-nos, teórica e metodologicamente, na articulação entre a Análise de Discurso de linha francesa, tal como vem sendo desenvolvida no Brasil, e o campo da História das Ideias Linguísticas. Dessa forma, concebemos o dicionário ao qual nos dedicamos como um instrumento linguístico e o abordamos como um objeto discursivo elaborado em um espaço de enunciação que, de nossa perspectiva, é atravessado por um processo de (des)colonização linguística. Tendo em conta que nesse espaço a língua espanhola funciona sob um efeito de injunção à homogeneidade, partimos da hipótese de que a análise discursiva do DIEA nos permitirá detectar marcas do modo como nesse instrumento é significada a separação ou a disjunção obrigada à qual o real da história submete uma língua em um espaço de (des)colonização. Para o desenvolvimento da análise à qual nos propomos, colocamos o DIEA em relações de sentido com uma série de outros instrumentos, em especial com o Diccionario de la lengua española, comumente conhecido como Diccionario de la Real Academia española, e o Diccionario del español de México. Como base para a construção de nossa reflexão, primeiramente, tratamos questões relativas à lexicografia em língua espanhola que entendemos como essenciais para considerar as condições de produção de nosso objeto de estudo. Abordamos, portanto, algumas obras relativas ao território político da atual Espanha; refletimos sobre a publicação de dicionários integrais na América Hispânica e construímos um panorama da produção de dicionários na Argentina. A partir das considerações acerca da conjuntura da lexicografia hispânica, analisamos alguns aspectos do paratexto do DIEA a capa, a quarta capa, a apresentação e o prólogo e um recorte de verbetes que compõem a nomenclatura da letra P do dicionário. Tratando-se de uma aproximação a esse objeto, este estudo apresenta uma leitura interpretativa do DIEA com base na qual detectamos diferentes posições que esse instrumento ocupa no processo de (des)colonização linguística e a partir das quais produz diferentes efeitos de sentido. / This masters degree study presents a discursive analysis of some aspects of the Diccionario integral del español de la Argentina (DIEA), lexicographical work published in 2008 in Argentina and considered the first non-differential dictionary elaborated and published in a Hispanic American country. As we take DIEA as an object of study, we situate ourselves, theoretically and methodologically, on the relationship between the Discourse Analysis with its French origin, as it has been developed in Brazil, and the field of the History of Linguistic Ideas. Thus, we understand the dictionary to which we dedicate this work as a linguistic instrument and approach it as a discursive object drawn in a space of enunciation that, from our point of view, is crossed by a process of linguistic (de) colonization. Taking into account that in this space the Spanish language works under the tendency to homogeneity, we assume that the discursive analysis of the DIEA will allow us to detect traces of how the separation or \"compulsory disjunction\" is meant in this instrument, in which the real of the history submits a language in a space of (de) colonization. For the development of the analysis that we propose, we put the DIEA in sense relations with a number of other instruments, in particular the Diccionario de la lengua española, commonly known as Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, and the Diccionario del español Mexico. As a basis for the construction of our reflection, first, we deal with issues related to lexicography in the Spanish language that we understand as essential to consider the production conditions of our object of study. Therefore we address some works on the political territory of present-day Spain; reflect on the publication of comprehensive dictionaries in Hispanic America and build an overview of the production of dictionaries in Argentina. From considerations about the situation of Hispanic lexicography, we analyze some aspects of the DIEA paratext - the cover, the back cover, the presentation and the prologue - and a cutting of entries that compose the nomenclature of the letter P from the dictionary. Since this is an approximation to this object, this study presents an interpretive reading of DIEA under which we detect different positions occupied by this instrument in the the linguistic (de)colonization process and from which it produces different meaning effects.

Based on some assumptions of modern linguistics over linguistic variation and change, this work proposes some reflection about the way the ancient and mainly the master of rhetoric Quintiliano dealt with the perception of diversity and variability of its language. Com esta análise foi possível identificar as representações que diferentes falantes têm não só da língua portuguesa, como também dos usos que outros falantes fazem dessa língua / With this research the intention is to enrich the debate on the theme of linguistic norms, especifically about the linguistic norms that coexist in brasilian portuguese, showing the vision of importants sociolinguistic authors, concerning the division and nomenclature of these norms, in addition clarifies the socio-historical aspects involved in the constitution of the brasilian standard norm. Also seeks to evidence that exists an ideological apparatus, named here as the ideology of standard norm, that maintains the hight status of one norm, the prescriptive, above the others, cultured norms and popular norms. For this it observes how this ideology manifests itself in a society through analysis of comments made by followers of the page “Palavra Certa – Dicas da Língua Portuguesa” belongs to Facebook social network. With this analysis it was possible to identify the representations that the speakers have not only of the portuguese language, but also of the use that different speakers make in this language

Les études linguistiques les plus récentes admettent que les noms propres sont souvent traduits, ou adaptés, par opposition aux anciennes théories sur la non-traduisibilité des noms propres.Ce qui distingue les toponymes du reste de l’onomastique, ce sont les implications politiques, sociologiques et historiques qui concernent une bonne partie des noms géographiques. Dire « Breslau » pour la ville polonaise « Wrocław » peut avoir une connotation négative selon le contexte. Et pourtant, nous rencontrons très fréquemment cette forme surInternet. De plus, on observe avec la mondialisation la multiplication de nombreuses versions du même toponyme.Le travail présenté ici est composé de trois parties. La première partie présente de manière brève les théories concernant les noms propres, mais adaptées aux toponymes, et la deuxième décrit leurs fonctions, ainsi que leur statut linguistique par rapport à la normalisation internationale. Le concept de la toponymie synchronique-contrastive et les méthodes d’analyse des toponymes selon cette approche sont introduits dans la partie 2.La partie trois est une analyse du corpus qui a pour le but d’observer les structures et l’intégration des toponymes polonais dans la langue française ainsi que leur usage populaire dans les publications courantes (sur Internet, dans les brochures touristiques, dans les applications et réseaux sociaux, etc.), qui diffère de l’usage officiel, censé être politiquementcorrect. / The most recent linguistic studies show that proper names are often translated or adapted, in contrast to the traditional theories of untranslatability of proper names.What distinguishes toponyms from the rest of onomastics are political, sociological and historical implications that affect many geographical names. Using the name "Breslau" for the Polish city "Wrocław" may convey negative connotations depending on the context. Nevertheless, this form is often found on the Internet. Moreover, due to globalization we arewitnessing the multiplication of many versions of the same toponym. This work is composed of three parts. The first part presents theories of proper names,but adapted to toponyms, and the second describes their functions and their linguistic status according to the international standardization. The concept of synchronic-contrastive toponymy and methods of analysing toponyms according to this approach are introduced as well in the second part.The third part is an analysis of the corpus with the purpose of observing the structure and the integration of Polish toponyms into the French language, as well as their popular use in current publications (Internet, tourist brochures, in applications and social networks, etc.) different from the official use, which is supposed to be politically correct.

Black English and education in South Africa : an investigation

"The emergence of English as an international language in a number of domains has implications which are becoming a matter of widespread discussion among both linguists and the general public. In the face of the increasing number of the functions for which English is regarded as more useful or convenient than any other language, and the growth in the numbers of its speakers and learners - it is only slowly that we are beginning to sort out the practical and theoretical implications for the early part of the new millennium of this unprecedented linguistic predominance" (Honey, 1996:99). Despite its high status, the standard of English teaching and learning, especially in severely underfunded black South African schools has suffered rapid deterioration. At the moment, there are no indications that the downward slide can be halted. The nonnative English language debate is compounded by arguments rejecting the pedagogic notion of "Standard English" and advocating a linguistic ethos which suggests that all forms of English are equal. This has resulted in the proliferation of terms such as "black English", "Ghanaian English", "Indian English" etc. which are claimed to be on an equal footing with "British" and "American" English or standard English (Ahulu, 1992). This thesis makes the important point that both "educated" black and white people in South Africa make use of standard English. But the concept of standard English must be properly understood. Quirk at the 1995 English Academy conference, was pushing the term "general English" as an alternative name for "standard English." A variety of English such as British or American English incorporates a standard variety that is encoded in grammars, dictionaries and guides of usage, taught in educational institutions, used to print and often found in the usage of those regarded as educated users. However, those who express "concern for the recognition and acceptance of the English language standard in the education system are sometimes accused of ignoring socio-linguistic realities" (Wright, 1996: 154). This thesis discusses several language features which are peculiar to English as a second language (ESL). These features have been claimed to yield the characteristics of a "South African black English." The analysis shows that these characteristic features are not consistently or reliably realised. In fact according to current research it would seem that most "features are actually teacher-influenced" (Buthelezi, 1989:40). Nonstandard ESL features indicate according to Wright (1995: 8) "a symptom of the sad failure of our education system rather than a sign of the creative evolution of a vigorous new national variety of English." Wright maintains that "to advocate the institutionalising of non-standard English-attributable in large measure to apartheid's legacy of low educational standards - would be neither radical nor progressive, but a profoundly conservative attitude, imposing and enshrining mediocrity." The debate about "black English" in South Africa has not yet gained momentum even though it is part of the common currency. There seems to be a powerful conventional opinion in influential circles that claims that there is a black English in South Africa. The possibility exists that a local variety of English in South Africa may ultimately emerge. But the internationally viable variety will still be needed, one hopes by an ever growing portion of the population as education and opportunity increase. Standard English is the form of English that is taught in South African schools and tertiary institutions. In other words, it includes all users of the "educated" form of English all over the world and it also fulfils more and broader language functions than the nonstandard form. The pedagogic notion of standard English, however, does not imply refusal to accept the existence of non-standard varieties of English or of features in colloquial use that are non-standard and geographically or culturally specific. It is all the more important according to Ahulu (1994: 26) for those concerned with education, especially "the curriculum designers, subject advisors and textbooks writers, to know the forms of English they should consider and emphasize as the educational target, which should subsequently guide teachers and examiners." The evidence we have in the field of "black English" according to Ahulu's (1992) findings in Ghana largely consists of coinages and other lexical modifications, and the listing of isolated examples of grammatical divergence. What is referred to as "educated black English" is nothing more that standard English with an injection of vocabulary items of South African origin. Such phenomena as coinage, lexical borrowing are processes by which standard English is expanding its lexicon as an international language. The inferior conditions of years of underfunding and relentless application of the underlying philosophy of apartheid education have had a critical and profound bearing on the state of ESL teaching. For professional careers, the country's economic development and membership of the international scene, to mention but a few requirements, standard English is essential. Teacher training institutions in South Africa are at the moment going through a rationalisation and restructuring process and they need to review their ESL curriculum and programmes. Language Ideologies and Mobility: A Political Economy Approach to Quebec City's English-speaking Minority

Socio-economic processes have long underlined the value of language and ethno-linguistic categories in Canada. The Quiet Revolution, widely considered to be one such process, has resulted in the production of Quebec's English-speaking minority. Although recent studies pertaining to Quebec's English-speaking minority have largely focused on the construction of identity, little research has explored the perceived value of language. While Quebec City’s English-speaking minority is increasingly bilingual, figures suggest that its youth continues to migrate. Through a critical perspective, this thesis explores how Quebec City’s English-speaking minority is navigating the uneven distribution and rising value of bilingualism. Using a qualitative approach, I conducted 15 interviews with participants who attended an English-language high school in Quebec City. Results revealed that participants mobilized ethnic and economic language ideologies as a means to negotiate the value of their linguistic practices and that these language ideologies structured mobility and enabled participants to reposition themselves within a new linguistic market.
