To consider the integrity on social media : A qualitative study about how the elder generation experience that dataveillance affects their integrity on Facebook and how they negotiate it

Eliasson, Erika, Löwy, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
The Study “To consider the integrity on social media” aims to how the elder generation negotiate their integrity and how it is affected by the dataveillance on social media. The study examines the elder generation in the age between 60 to 80 years on how they perceive integrity and dataveillance on Facebook. Over the past decade, internet use among the elderly has increased, while concerns about the online integrity have become an increasingly discussed topic, with incidents such as Cambridge Analytica and Brexit that raised awareness about integrity and dataveillance. The rapid development of digital media has contributed to a strong community, that the elderly wants to take part in, but finds it difficult to be a part of. The elder generation lacks the digital skills that is required, which creates a gap between the elderly and society. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Internet Privacy Concerns (IPC), Integrity Paradox and Westin´s theory. By using the method thematic analysis, we have studied the qualitative interviews and found themes that contribute to the analysis of the empirical research. The analysis showed that the elderly stands between being part of the social, digital community and jeopardize their online integrity or choosing to give up social media and risk ending up in exclusion but maintaining their integrity in safety. The study also found that the elderly lacks the digital knowledge that is required today to be a part of the digital community and have difficulties in understanding what dataveillance means and that it exists on Facebook.

Exploring the Trust - Distrust dichotomy : a study about news media use and news media trust among Swedish upper secondary school students of Generation Z

Furusten, Axel January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, news media use and trust among Swedish upper secondary schools students of Generation Z is investigated through focus group interviews with students from two different schools. This study aims to explain how and why Swedish upper secondary school students of Generation Z use and perceive news media, with focus on the relations between news media trust and news media use. To interpret the empirical data, the study uses a theoretical framework consisting of three pillars: an understanding of trust informed by Giddens (1990) definition; the use of public connection (Couldry et al., 2018) to understand the role of news media; a generational understanding based on Prensky’s (2001a; 2001b) concept of Digital Natives, and Bolin’s (2017) media generations. This study suggests that there is a clear discrepancy between the young Swedes news media use, and their trust. They acknowledge the importance of news media in society, and traditional news medias are perceived as trustworthy expert systems, providing of professional, quality journalism. Despite the high levels of trust, traditional news medias are rarely actively used. Instead, students come into contact with most news through social media feeds, on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. They mostly view the content on these platforms as unreliable and untrustworthy, due to the lack of a clear, trustworthy expert presence. Despite distrusting the content on social media, the students continue to use the services as a source of news, in part due to the convenience of use and in part as they believe themselves to well equipped to discern true and fake news through their generations’ intimate knowledge of both the structure of social medias, and strategies for fact checking. This study also argues that the use of distrusted news from social media, may in fact in some cases enable a public connection.

The future of Public Service - in the hands of the youth : A qualitative study on high school students' use of and opinions about Swedish public service.

Åberg, Elsa, Andreasson, Alice January 2023 (has links)
Public service media has a big role in the traditional media in Sweden. Historically, they constructed a shared cultural reference and applied news and facts to people to make it possible for them to be educated citizens. However, public service and other traditional media have a difficulty reaching young people today. At the same time young people are the group that consumes the most amount of media. Therefore, it is relevant to study what they consume and what they discard - and why. Especially why they don’t consume the content provided by Swedish public service media. Because if they don’t consume it now, will they in the future?       This qualitative study aims to examine how young people in Sweden use public service media and whether they value it as a public service. To do this, we conducted four focus groups with a total of twelve 18-year-olds. The result shows that even though few of them choose to consume content from the public service media, most of them have a positive association of it and value it as a public service. Many said that they trust that they follow their assignment to serve the public and that they produce objective and accurate news. However, the knowledge about the way public service media is organized and financed was shallow at best. It appears that the main reason they don’t consume the content is that they don’t come across it where they consume media. The interviewees that did consume public service media content did so on a different platform such as Spotify or YouTube. So the difficulty in reaching the young audience might not be because of the content, but that they don’t even know of its existence.

Impact of social media on Intercultural Communication Competence of Chinese People living in Sweden

Liu, Mingxing January 2019 (has links)
Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) describes the ability to interact with people from different cultures effectively and appropriately. In the impact of globalization and information technology development, social media facilitates intercultural communication and open a new space for intercultural interactions. As the impact of social media on ICC is not often explored, this study would shed light on this unexplored domain and focus on Chinese people who currently live in Sweden by asking the question: How does social media influence the ICC of Chinese people living in Sweden? This study adopts a mixed method: it uses a survey questionnaire followed by individual interviews, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. As a result, two factors stimulating ICC are identified. The role of social media on ICC when residence in the host country is confirmed, and two stages of ICC development associated with social media in the host country are explored. Last but not least, social media seems to influence the ICC of Chinese people living in Sweden in a positive way, however this positive impact is not independent of real social interaction with the host culture.

Wenngren, Jessica January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the impact of media surveillance on older and younger generations on social media through a qualitative investigation. The study aims to uncover generational differences in awareness and behavior regarding media surveillance. The background highlights the growing concerns surrounding media surveillance in the digital age, particularly on social media platforms. By focusing on older and younger generations, the study explores how their experiences, attitudes, and knowledge shape their awareness and behaviors in relation to media surveillance. Using qualitative research methods, including interviews, the study delves into the perspectives and experiences of the participants. The analysis of themes and patterns that emerge from the interviews provides valuable insights into the differing ways in which older and younger generations perceive and respond to media surveillance on social media. It is important to acknowledge the limitations of this study, such as the specific focus on two generations and the reliance on qualitative data. Therefore, the findings cannot be generalized to the entire population, but they offer valuable insights into the specific context of media surveillance and generational dynamics. The two theories used in this study are uses and gratification theory from Balnaves et al. (2009) and the theory about surveillance capitalism by Zuboff (2019). The results and conclusions of the study contribute to a deeper understanding of how media surveillance impacts older and younger generations on social media. Furthermore, the findings can inform the development of strategies to enhance awareness, empower users, and protect privacy in the context of media surveillance.

Through the screen : A quantitative study on the relationship of social media to self-esteem and subjective well-being

Ballovara, Elise, Dahl, Denice January 2024 (has links)
Social interaction and communication take place largely on social media in today's society. Previous research has shown links between problematic social media use (PSMU) and factors such as low self-esteem and subjective well-being (SWB). The aim of this paper was to study the relationship between PSMU with self-esteem and SWB, and to study possible gender differences within them. A questionnaire containing 21 questions was conducted, in which 183 people aged 18-76 years participated (n = 183; 75.9% women, 23.5% men, 0.6% other; Mage = 34 years). The factors were studied through self-report scales, where PSMU was measured by the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, self-esteem was measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and SWB was measured by the WHO-5. According to Pearson's correlation analysis, there were significant negative correlations between PSMU and self-esteem, and between PSMU and SWB. There was also a significant difference between women's and men's PSMU, but these differences were not found for self-esteem and SWB. In conclusion, it is difficult to generalize the results because the survey was conducted in Sweden and the gender distribution was uneven. Regardless, it highlights the problem that arises when social media use becomes a dysfunctional coping strategy. In future research, factors such as culture, marital status and occupation may be of interest to study.

Potřebujeme více informací? Využití více médií současně / Do we need more information? Using of multiple media at the same time

Krenková, Andrea January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis named "Do we need more information? Using of multiple media at the same time" examines the phenomen of simultaneous media usage in young audience aged 18-35 years. This thesis is based on the hypotheses of international surveys that demonstrate a new trend in consumption of media by which people use multiple media simultaneously. The aim of the thesis is to provide an insight into this issue. The first part defines basic concepts such as the media, media audience and related theories. Furthermore, international studies and their conclusions are presented, serving as a starting point for my own research. The second part presents the research methodology. The thesis makes use of a combination of a quantitative and qualitative approach, the so-called mixed research. The methodological section briefly describes the selected method - survey and an semi-structured interview. The next two sections deal with the implementation of the research itself. The sample consisted of 103 young people for the quantitative part of the survey, and 15 young people for the qualitative analysis section. The conclusion summarizes the research results and approaches each thematic area, including the possible hypotheses.

Watching Indonesian sinetron: imagining communities around the television

Ida, Rachmah January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is about the everyday cultural practices of communal television viewing by urban kampung people. It challenges the institutional frameworks and constructs about the television audience. To achieve this, the thesis looks at the cultural context of the television set and its uses in urban kampung households and the neighbourhood system. Studies on urban kampung community in Indonesia so far have focused on the socio-economic and cultural practices of the people in relation to state ideological matters (e.g. Guinness, 1989; Sullivan, 1994; Brenner, 1998). This thesis is an attempt to extend the investigation about the cultural practices of the kampung community in relation to media use in the era of competitive private television in the early 2000s. As those kampung people have existentially engaged in fashioning their own lives neither as rural subjects nor urban/ity subjects, their narratives in responding to televised images and representations (of women in particular) shape the particularity of the cultural scene of these marginalized subjects. Taking up their social economic background and the particularities of socio-cultural circumstances of the kampung, this present study takes a close look into the day-to-day communal viewing practice of the kampung female viewers of the most-watched local program on Indonesian television, that is sinetron (television drama). / Extending the argument of Ien Ang and others into the Indonesian context, the thesis concludes that the national television audience as a unified, atomistic and controllable entity, as is institutionally imagined, does not exist. Rather, watching television, particularly among the urban middle to lower class community, is a discursive practice overwhelmingly showing the diverse, particular, and unpredictable attitudes, which challenge the account of 'the audience' that characterises the industry, the state and, ironically, also the intellectual critical knowledge producers.
