Bergeron, Julie 06 1900 (has links)
While suburbs are being transformed at an alarming rate, under the pressures of the Real estate industry’s development strategies, social concerns regarding the quality of life and the resulting landscapes are currently on the rise. With these challenges to bear, stakeholders usually employ solutions from an "expert" perspective that remain impervious to existing social conditions and demands. Given the lack of knowledge from the citizens’ perspectives, there is an urgent need for developing novel methods that are capable of bringing forth this local knowledge. A survey conducted in fall 2009 with residents of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, on the south shore of Montreal, revealed the strength of an under-used and innovative method: the go-along. This method has demonstrated a particularly interesting technique to grasp the way dwellers qualify, imagine, value and move through their locality. Allowing privileged access to biographies and giving rise to improvised paths, the method has enabled placed-based narratives and has lead to an opening for expressing concerns, valuations and aspirations of citizens towards their community. In doing so, landscapes shift from expert evaluation to a dynamic scene where significant fragments of individual stories are told in relation to the experience of places in the everyday life. The study results conclude that the residents’ narratives and knowledge are undeniably rich and relevant to comprehending collective landscape issues and values. The existing logics and processes behind suburban landscape transformations would highly benefit from the collective wealth of dwellers’ extensive, situated and complex knowledge of the city’s geography, politics, economy and sociology. Furthermore, it can lead way to community participatory projects engaging multiple actors within a collective multifaceted reflection on the future of suburbs and the actions that should be taken towards a better future.

Modélisation, caractérisation et analyse de systèmes de PLL intégrés, utilisant une approche globale puce-boîtier-circuit imprimé / Modeling, characterization and analysis of integrated PLL systems using a global chip-package-board approach

Ranaivoniarivo, Manohiaina 15 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis work focuses on characterization, modeling and analysis of «Pulling» and «Pushing» phenomena in Phase Locked Loops (PLL) based on a global approach where distributed effects of electromagnetic couplings at different integration levels (chip-level, assembly-level, board or PCB-level) are taken into account. The modeling approach adopts a hybrid methodology where the analysis of electromagnetic couplings combined with broadband equivalent circuit synthesis (compatible with library models of active components) is coupled with dynamic behavioral representations. The derived behavioral representations properly capture the effects of nonlinearities both at component scale (non-linear characteristic of varicap as function of control voltages) and at function block level (non-uniform gain KVCO of VCO circuits depending on frequency). The hybrid methodology renders possible the assessment of competitive effects resulting from «Pulling» and «Pushing» phenomena at chip level (influence of the PLL, effects of the power amplifier, power integrity, or ground reference distribution, etc..), and the distortions induced by components external to the chip at package and board levels (such as components on PCB: SAW filters, decoupling capacitors, matching networks). The proposed approach is used for the study and design of two types of circuits developed by NXP- Semiconductors, for applications related to automotive security and immobilization (an RF low power transceiver Integrated Circuit (PLL running around 1.763GHz), and to satellite receiver (PLL operating at low power for LNB circuits working at 9.75/10.6 GHz).The obtained modeling results are validated by correlation with experimental data and by comparison with different time-domain and frequency-domain simulation tools results (ADS-Harmonic Balance, ADS-Shooting solutions, Cadence-Spectre)

Here I Am And Here I’m Not: Queer Women’s Use Of Temporary Urban Spaces In Post-Katrina New Orleans

Hermannsdóttir, Vigdís María 15 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis builds on previous work on the relationship between queer identities and urban space. Drawing from an analysis of two recurring New Orleans-based queer women’s events, I examine how lesbians and queer women not only use but also actively produce social spaces of their own through participation in events organized specifically for lesbians and queer women. Using qualitative methods, I examine the ephemeral and transient quality of lesbian and queer women’s social spaces in post-Katrina New Orleans and the processes through which such spaces come into being. I argue that lesbian and queer women’s production of ephemeral social spaces provides an opportunity to ground informal social networks in urban spatial locations, to sustain internal visibility, and to create embodied impressions of a cohesive community by emphasizing the role of the body, not geographic borders, for reimagining social territories in urban landscapes. Within this context, attention is given to the class-based and racial projects that affect the trajectory of contemporary queer urban space formation and queer women’s experiences therein.

The 2004 Japanese Professional Baseball Collective Bargaining Negotiations: A Qualitative Case Study

Benjamin, Joy Delorenza 21 January 2015 (has links)
Walton and McKersie (1965) defined relationship patterns as those shared attitudes that are important to negotiators when they are interacting together. In the case of the 2004 Japanese Professional Baseball collective bargaining negotiations, Dabscheck (2006) discussed the major issues and events that led to the two (2) day labor strike. However, his article did not describe how the relationship pattern between the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and the Japanese Professional Baseball Players Association (JPBPA) changed to facilitate the settlement of the conflict. Along the same vein, researchers (Adair, Brett, & Okumura, 2001; Adair & Brett, 2005; Deck, Farmer, & Zeng, 2009; and Doucet, Jehn, Weldon, & Wang, 2009; Drake, 1995; Neu, 1988; and McDaniel, 2000) attempted to show a link between negotiator behavior from cultural and communication perspectives, however, there was little empirical attention paid to the psychological process, such as thoughts, perceptions, emotions, and attitudes, and its link to negotiator behavior leaving a gap in the existing scholarly literature. To address the gap in Dabscheck's (2006) article and the existing scholarly literature, I utilized Yin's (2009) Case Study Research Approach to qualitative inquiry by analyzing document reviews and engaging collaboratively with research participants through focused interviews to investigate how the relationship pattern in the 2004 Japanese Professional Baseball collective bargaining negotiations changed from the beginning to the end of the conflict if at all. I found that the NPB and the JPBPA institutional pattern of relationship at the start of the conflict began with a containment-aggression relationship pattern, and over four (4) months, the pattern of relationship did change from containment-aggression to cooperation. Upon further investigation, I found that the NPB and the JPBPA negotiators operated initially in the distributive bargaining sub-process utilizing reinforcement tactics, but over the course of four (4) months, they began to operate in the integrative bargaining sub-process with the utilization of cognitive balance tactics even though the NPB and the JPBPA negotiators never abandoned operating in the distributive bargaining sub-process. In essence, they operated in hybrid distributive and integrative sub-processes at the same time. Moreover, I discovered that the NPB and the JPBPA moved from containment-aggression to cooperation not only because of a change in the NPB's lead negotiator position, but also because of a shared emotional moment between the NPB and the JPBPA negotiators, which initiated a shift away from stalemate. Although environmental factors, such as the media, fans, politicians, and other unions, over the course of four (4) months did not waiver in their support for the resolution of the conflict, the evidence did not directly demonstrate the way that their support and their influence manifested in the collective bargaining negotiations.

Reflexões sobre o ensino de metodologias ágeis na academia, na indústria e no governo / Reflections on teaching agile methodologies in academy, industry, and government.

Silva, Alexandre Freire da 14 September 2007 (has links)
Agile methodologies, specially eXtreme Programming (XP), appear as a counterpoint to traditional software development methods. We live in a moment were it is considered acceptable to find bugs in computer programs, even those for which we pay a lot of money. It is essential to improve the way we teach techniques with which teams can collaborate on the development of quality software so that this area of knowledge reaches the maturity we wish. Teaching XP is a relatively complex task because it implies that people must go through a cultural change to accept its values, principles, and practices. Different organizations need to adapt the methodology so that it will work well in their local context. Finding ways to facilitate teaching and adopting agile practices is fundamental to improve the quality of software being developed in the country. This work researches the process of teaching XP in academic, governmental and industrial con- texts. Three case studies were conducted and analyzed so that we could suggest patterns that can support educators teaching the methodology in any context.

Civilizando pela música: a pedagogia do canto orfeônico na escola paulista da Primeira República (1910-1930) / \"Civilizing\" through music: Orpheonic Singing teaching in São Paulo State schools in the First Brazilian Republic (1910-1930).

Gilioli, Renato de Sousa Porto 15 September 2003 (has links)
This research studies the Orpheonic Singing project in public schools of São Paulo State in the 1910s and 1920s. At that time, the men who idealized such initiative João Gomes Junior, Carlos Alberto Gomes Cardim, Fabiano Lozano, Lázaro Lozano, Honorato Faustino e João Baptista Julião were pioneers in bringing to Brazilian schools this kind of musical teaching. Despite of that, many of them have been largely forgotten or, at least, have had their role minimized in Brazilian history of music education. This project intended to civilize social customs, with the objective of building national identity, and to teach a point of earring tied to the standards of western erudite music tradition. Musical teaching experiences and axioms of the 1910s and 1920s decades were especially important for they were the main source used by Villa-Lobos to become Orpheonic Singing a national phenomenon in the 1930s in Brazil.

Polimorfismo do códon 72 do gene p53 e risco de infecções persistentes por papiloma vírus humano (HPV) e neoplasia do colo uterino / Polymorphism of codon 72 of the p53 gene and risk of persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and cervical neoplasia

Rabachini, Tatiana 20 December 2002 (has links)
In recent years, a number of epidemiological studies have pointed toward a strong association between cervical cancer and infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This association derives from the discovery that these viruses code for oncoproteins, among them E6 and E7 that have transforming properties. The E7 gene product associates with the retinoblastoma gene product, causing the latter to lose its function as a negative regulator of the cell cycle. The E6 gene product interacts with the tumor suppressor p53 gene product, resulting in its degradation via ubiquitin dependent proteolysis. The p53 gene is a tumor suppressor that funcions in the regulation of the cell cycle. It presents a number of distinct polymorfisms in diverse ethnic groups, and has been widely studied, both in normal and tumor tissues. The polymorfism of codon 72 is the most studied, and may present three different alleles in the population. One allele codes for arginine (Arg), another codes for proline (Pro), and a third, rarely found, codes for cystein (Cys). In 1993 an epidemilogical study of the natural history of infection by HPV and its possible association with cervical neoplasia was initiated in a population of low income females in São Paulo, Brazil, one of the areas of greatest risk in the world. The study focuses on persistent infection by oncogenic types of HPV as a precursor to carcinogenesis of the cervix, and seeks to understand the attributes of the natural history of viral infection and of illnesses associated with the cervix. One of the objectives of the study is to evaluate if the polymorfisms of codon 72 of p53 can or not be used as a marker of predisposition to cervical cancer, given the finding in the initial study that patients who were homozygous for the p53Arg genotype were 7 times more susceptible to developing cervical neoplasias than those patients who were homozygous for p53Pro, or heterozygous p53 Pro/ Arg. Previous studies have been realized both supporting and disputing these findings. The current study had two main objectives: to verify if the polymorfism of p53 codon 72 could be associated with persistent infections of HPV and the risk of cervical neoplasia, as well as to compare methods of detection used by other studies, in an attempt to clarify if the discording results of past studies could be due to methodological classification errors. Seven detection methods were compared. Only one of these, allele specific PCR, presented discording results from the rest. Coincidentally, this method was widely used in a number of studies which found both positive and negative associations. This might indicate that the method-dependent classification errors could influence the results of correlation between codon 72 polymorphism and the risk of cervical neoplasia. The correlations observed by this study did not demonstrate an association between codon 72 polymorphism and the risk of persistent HPV infection and precursor lesions of cervical cancer.

Projeto Educação para a Sustentabilidade: transformando espaços e pessoas. Uma experiência de sete anos no ensino médio / Education for Sustainability Project: transforming spaces and people. A seven-year high school experience.

Grandisoli, Edson Abreu de Castro 05 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the effectiveness of the \"pedagogy of sustainability\" used as a guide in the creation, implementation and development of the Education for Sustainability Project (EpS), which was evaluated considering the main products created in the school space, and the effects and impacts over the participating students, teachers and school management. The EpS (2010 to 2016) was an optional extracurricular activity for high school students (1st and 2nd grades) developed at the counter-shift of a traditional private school of the city of São Paulo. The main goal of the EpS project was to place students as protagonists of the creation and execution of interventions in the school, in order to make it more sustainable. In this process, active learning techniques and the precepts of social learning were used, guided by critical environmental education premises. The main interventions carried out by the students were critically analyzed regarding the products generated as well as the effects and impacts related on the participating students considering parameters as knowledge, attitudes, declared behaviors, values and abilities. For that, pre and posttest questionnaires were used and explored by qualitative content analysis techniques and subsequently quantified and presented by descriptive statistics. The effects over the participating students (experimental group) were compared to groups of non-participating students (control group). The experimental group presented conspicuous changes in all parameters (knowledge, attitudes and declared behaviors) considering pre and post-tests. The control group, on the other hand, did not present such significant changes, indicating and reinforcing the importance and influence of the participation in the EpS Project. The analysis of declared abilities and values of the experimental group indicate the valorization of the complex analysis of socio-environmental challenges, teamwork, peer communication, networking, respect and empathy, among others. The impact analysis was carried out with ex-participants after 4, 5 and 7 years their participation and showed important influence in the academic, professional and everyday choices. Tutors and school management were analyzed by questionnaires and interviews, respectively. The effects on both stakeholders regarding their participation in the project seem less significant than for the students. It is possible to conclude that the effects and impacts on the experimental group directly reflect the experiences lived in the project, and, therefore, reinforce the effectiveness of the \"pedagogy of sustainability\". Among the decisive factors for the success of the transformations in space and people are the construction of an internal and external partnerships network, as well as the continuity and permanence of the project for seven years in the school, a rare fact in most educational institutions that dedicate themselves to Environmental Education or Education for Development Sustainable related practices.

Measurement methodologies for controlling automotive radars in EMC chambers

Söderberg, Ludwig January 2017 (has links)
Autonomous cars are developing in a rapid speed, which means that the advanced driver-assistance systems must be tested carefully. Radar is one of many tools the car can use to detect obstacles and targets in front of the car. This bachelor thesis deals with programming and testing of an FMCW radar. The radar used in this thesis is an Continental ARS 308-2C/21 HS/AO, and the programming is written in Visual Basic. The goal within this project was to write a program for the Continental radar, and then measure static objects. The radar and the written program will be used in the research project, "HiFi Radar Target". The radar module will also be implemented in the new EMC chamber, AWITAR, which is currently under construction. The radar sweeps in the frequency band 77GHz, which is a standard frequency in the automotive industry. Communication with the computer is done via a CAN-network. Function tests have been performed on Astazero and gave satisfactory results. The thesis work has been carried out at RISE in Borås.
