Measurement of three-dimensional coherent fluid structure in high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layers

Clark, Thomas Henry January 2012 (has links)
The turbulent boundary layer is an aspect of fluid flow which dominates the performance of many engineering systems - yet the analytic solution of such flows is intractable for most applications. Our understanding of boundary layers is therefore limited by our ability to simulate and measure them. Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (TPIV) is a recently developed technique for direct measurement of fluid velocity within a 3D region. This allows new insight into the topological structure of turbulent boundary layers. Increasing Reynolds Number increases the range of scales at which turbulence exists; a measurement technique must have a larger 'dynamic range' to fully resolve the flow. Tomographic PIV is currently limited in spatial dynamic range (which is also linked to the spatial and temporal resolution) due to a high degree of noise. Results also contain significant bias error. This work proposes a modification of the technique to use more than two exposures in the PIV process, which (for four exposures) is shown to improve random error by a factor of 2 to 7 depending on experimental setup parameters. The dynamic range increases correspondingly and can be doubled again in highly turbulent flows. Bias error is reduced by up to 40%. An alternative reconstruction approach is also presented, based on application of a reduction strategy (elimination of coefficients based on a first guess) to the tomographic weightings matrix Wij. This facilitates a potentially significant increase in computational efficiency. Despite the achieved reduction in error, measurements contain non-zero divergence due to noise and sampling errors. The same problem affects visualisation of topology and coherent fluid structures. Using Projection Onto Convex Sets, a framework for post-processing operators is implemented which includes a divergence minimisation procedure and a scale-limited denoising strategy which is resilient to 'false' vectors contained in the data. Finally, developed techniques are showcased by visualisation of topological information in the inner region of a high Reynolds Number boundary layer (δ+ = 1890, Reθ = 3650). Comments are made on the visible flow structures and tentative conclusions are drawn.

Rien d’autre que l’être. Recherches sur l’analogie et la tradition aristotélicienne de la phénoménologie / Nothing else than being. A study on analogy and the Aristotelian tradition of Phenomenology / Nient’altro che l’essere Ricerche sull’analogia e la tradizione aristotelica della fenomenologia

Mariani, Emanuele 25 October 2010 (has links)
Analogy is the aporetic answer to the problem of unity and difference, sealed in the puzzling multiplicity of being’s meanings. On this answer depends the status of “science” for metaphysics. Our research aims to redraw the historical conditions of emergence of this concept (more likely a conceptual complex) which has been marking with its seal the history of western philosophy, from Aristotle and even before from Plato up to nowadays. Without analogy – here goes our hypothesis – neither the constitution, nor the «destruction” of metaphysics could be conceivable. But what is “analogy”? And up to where arrives its metaphysical impact ? The certainty of the term a quo leaves unresolved the extension of the curve, demanding therefore the ideal establishment of a term ad quem. Making out of husserlian phenomenology an advantaged observatory, we will grasp the last sparkling lights of analogy before the “destruction” of metaphysics decrees its disappearance. By fixing in the Aristotelianism of the XIXth century the anchorpoint between phenomenology and Aristotle, we shall establish as far as possible a series of connections: from Trendelenburg to Brentano and from Brentano to Husserl, always glancing at Aristotle, the analogy – this is the thesis we would to demonstrate – never abandon its original status of analogy of being.

Regulace uvádění zdravotnických prostředků na trh / Regulation of launching medical devices onto the market

Litavský, Ondřej January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the topic concerning regulation of launching medical devices onto the market with regard to the analysis of key regulatory framework. The aim of the thesis is to find out if the legal framework really fulfils its de lege ferenda objectives. The purpose of this thesis is to confirm or disprove a hypothesis that the regulation of launching medical devices onto the market is sufficient and effective from the point of view of consumer protection and interests of other stakeholders. Secondary aim of this diploma thesis is to confirm or disprove a hypothesis that the harmonization of legal framework in the EU is appropriate and effective. These hypothesis are to a certain extent following up the verification of four essential goals that should be reached by the regulation. One of the key aims is assuring the safety of the products, enabling them to move freely in terms of the internal market of the EU and assuring that the consumer isn't misled when deciding about his optimal situation. Besides that the regulation shouldn't unnecessarily slow down the activities of businesses and inappropriately limit their innovation potential. The diploma thesis has a critical point of view concerning some aspects of this regulation and in the end the author suggests some proposals in order to improve the current practice.

FÄLT : en postkvalitativ studie av rhizomatiskt lärande i konstnärligt bildskapande / FIELDS : a post qualitative study of rhizomatic learning in visual art

Ahlander, Elina January 2021 (has links)

A Critical Examination of A.N. Whitehead's Metaphysics in Light of the Later Martin Heidegger's Critique of Onto-Theology

Farr, David B.H. 09 1900 (has links)
It is the critique of Western metaphysics in the thought of the later Martin Heidegger that poses the problem for consideration in this work. Namely, if Western metaphysics as onto-theology has indeed fulfilled its prefigured configurations and found its completion in the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, as Heidegger claims, then what place, if any, is left for those theologians inspired by Alfred North Whitehead's metaphysics? To assist in developing a basis upon which to address this issue, I limit this work to a critical examination of Whitehead's metaphysics in light of the later Heidegger's critique of onto-theology. Therefore Heidegger's critique is normative for this project. The application of Heidegger's critique to Whitehead's metaphysics results in the following conclusion: Whitehead's metaphysics does not commit the mistakes detailed in Heidegger's critique of metaphysics. It is demonstrated, further, that the general character of Whitehead's metaphysics as fallibilistic at least leaves his metaphysics open to the possibility of Being (Sein). Specifically, it is shown that Whitehead's metaphysics does not divide entities into existence and essence; nor does it search for the explanatory principle (arche); nor is God understood as causa prima and therefore causa sui; nor is Creativity an empty concept and therefore nihilistic; nor is his metaphysics rooted in the cogito sum, nor does it anthropomorphize the world in order to secure certainty amongst multiple perspectives. Whitehead's metaphysics does not lead away from Being (Sein); rather, it may very well provide an occasion for Being (Sein). After this evaluation there are some brief remarks offered about how Whitehead's metaphysics, while not obscuring Being (Sein) in any of the ways detailed by Heidegger, also offers a philosophy of nature. This philosophy of nature leaves open the possibility of developing a natural theology that is not necessarily indicted by Heidegger's critique. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Fonctionnalisation d’un nouveau matériau pour le traitement de l’eau potable par floculation lestée / Functionalization of a new material for drinking water treatment by ballasted flocculation

Cuoq, Fabrice 20 December 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to improve a clarification process developed by VEOLIA Environment: The Actiflo®. The Actfilo® is based on adding microsand in the flocculation stage in order to increase the speed of sedimentation. However, a significant amount of polymeric flocculant is continuously added to the process, and residuals can be found in the decanted water. Our work was to graft a polymeric flocculant onto microsand in order to recycle the full hybrid material through hydrocycloning. Functionalization by "Grafting Onto" was based on grafting a commercial polymer onto microsand whereas “Grafting From” was based on surface-initiated polymerization. Flocculation properties of functionalized microsands were then tested in conventional coagulation/flocculation tests where the effectiveness of the two grafting methods was compared. Cationic functionalized sands, obtained by “Grafting From”, exhibit the best properties as a decrease of Dissolved Organic Carbon of 25% was reached whereas a decrease of 15% was reached by adding free polymer or adding sands from the “Grafting Onto” method. However final turbidity value was always slightly lower for the flocculation that occured when free polymer was added (- 0,5 NTU). Finally, regeneration processes to recycle the functionalized sands were established. The most effective of them being a treatment with Oxalic Acid. This treatment allowed us to regenerate flocculating properties of functionalized sands twice.

Daring to be destructive. Euphrase Kezilahabi’s onto-criticism

Lanfranchi, Benedetta 06 March 2013 (has links)
This paper illustrates the ways in which Kezilahabi’s 1985 dissertation makes its own daring contribution to the field of aesthetic criticism through the proposition of a new critical approach to African literature. Kezilahabi’s starting point for the elaboration this new critical approach is the realization of a prevailing tendency among literary critics to read African literature against formal and aesthetic paradigms deeply rooted in the Western literary and philosophical traditions. Opposed to the adoption of interpretative frames that do not acknowledge the philosophical implications involved in literary analysis, Kezilahabi affirms the importance of approaching literary production from within the artistic and philosophical tradition it stems from. Inspired by hermeneutic philosophy, especially in its “ontological turn” embodied by the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, Kezilahabi’s focus is on literary interpretation as an ontological enterprise aimed at “situating” literature within a horizon of understanding where its proper universe of references can be disclosed.

Becoming Together and Apart : technoemotions and other posthuman entanglements

Svedmark, Eva January 2016 (has links)
Using social media and norm-breaking material as an empirical touchstone this thesis elaborates, investigates and explores the entangled relationships between humans and technology in social media settings. Guided by uncomfortable, emotional and bodily online sharing the thesis gives voice to stories that are seldom heard, by people whose lives are rarely spoken of. By exploring the performative entanglements of/with/through technology, design and human intent the overall aim is to offer a critical and new understanding of our online togetherness and posthuman becoming. The conceptual framework throughout the thesis is based on posthuman theory and feminist technoscience, two closely connected theories providing a new onto-epistemological way of understanding the world’s becoming. The thesis should be seen as the product of an empirical practice of making theory about digital things, culture, humans and non-humans. By exploring diffraction and touch as not only theoretical standpoints but also hands-on methodology the thesis contributes to the development of new ways of doing research. Important findings arising from the practice of diffraction and touch are Technoemotions – conceptually agents built on a posthuman understanding of how emotions are entangled between and within the phenomenon, becoming important agents in the apparatus creating the phenomenon. Four Technoemotions seem particularly prominent in the material: Trust, Truth, Time and Embodiment. The thesis concludes by providing a discussion on critical alternatives for ethics, politics and power in relation to social media and the norms and norm-breaking practices most of us participate in. The responsibility and ability to respond are addressed, as well as social justice and hope for the future to come.
