Race and whiteness : A critical discourse analysis of teachers' understanding and attitudes concerning race

Turesson Blackman, Siri January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine secondary school teachers understanding concerning the terms race and whiteness, and how perceptions of the terms interrelates with the democratic values and duties assigned to the teachers of the Swedish educational system. Semi-structured qualitative research interviews were used to gather data and critical discourse analysis to process it. Results show that the terms race and whiteness respectively are intertwined with historical context, adding dimensions of utility and shortcomings when used. These dimensions are taking into consideration among the interviewed teachers and reflected upon. The thesis concludes that although the terms have given functions to explaining racism and structural injustice, consideration has to be made in respect to the Swedish historical context when used.

Högläsning ur fem lärares perspektiv : Vad lärarna anser om högläsning samt hur högläsning tillämpas. / Five teacher' perspective on read-aloud : What teachers think of reading aloud and how reading aloud is applied.

Norén, Ebba, Saarela, Anette January 2019 (has links)

DANGEROUS TIMES, DANGEROUS PLACES: HOW POLITICS IMPACTS HUMANITARIAN WORKER SECURITY IN DR CONGO

Hogg, Jonny January 2019 (has links)
DR Congo has experienced more than two decades of conflict and profound political upheaval, sparking humanitarian crises which have seen large-scale relief efforts to alleviate them. Aid workers and UN staff working there have been caught up in the violence, sometimes with deadly results and major disruption to aid operations. Nonetheless there has been a tendency to assume that most security incidents involving aid workers are a result either of pure criminality, or because the victims happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Is that really the case however, or are humanitarian workers perceived as political actors, and thus vulnerable to politically motivated violence? This dissertation conducts an empirical data study of attacks against humanitarian actors, UN workers and peacekeepers between 2006-2018, mapping them against political developments. Following previous work by Hoelscher, Mikllian & Nygard, this research tests what impact the nature of the conflict or the change of peacekeeping mandate has on both aid-worker and UN personnel security, as well as exploring the different risks faced by national and international staff working for international NGOs. It also, using an interpretivist lens first proposed by Labonte & Edgerton, explores the role of the Congolese state in aid-worker security, testing whether relations between the host government and aid providers can impact individual aid-worker security on the ground. The results indicate that both conflict intensity and elections cycles could impact on rates of attacks against aid-workers, as well as clearly demonstrating that national staff are far more exposed to risk of attack, and that fatalities of UN staff since the peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) in DRC received its more aggressive mandate in 2013 have risen sharply. The research also raises questions about the potential threat posed by the Congolese state to aid-worker security, given the nature of statehood in DRC, its motives and perceptions of aid operations, and the state’s role as both the main belligerent and security provider in zones where humanitarian workers chiefly operate.

The In-Betweens of Space and Time in Transit : Spatial and temporal realities for urban refugees in Eastleigh, Nairobi

Johansson, Lena January 2018 (has links)
This is a study on how Somali and Oromo refugees manage under uncertain circumstances in Eastleigh, Nairobi. Fleeing from war, persecution and violence, the refugees expected to find protection and a quick transfer to a third country, which was not the case. Instead, they ended up in being stuck, unsafe, and questioned. The refugees aimed for resettlement to a third country; a decision depending on approval from the hosting state, a receiving state, and UNHCR. This process normally included 8-10 years or more of waiting and a positive answer was not guaranteed. The spatial realities in displacement in Eastleigh included a status of illegitimacy, socioeconomic hardships, and unpredictability of an eventual resettlement in a third country. In the protracted waiting for resettlement they struggle to become part of the place but in the state of transit, and in an excluding context, they are in-between – in a liminal state in both space and time.

“Bikinis and fish don’t match” Exploring conflicts and local development of tourism in Ngapali, Burma

Nordby, Linda January 2018 (has links)
Against a backdrop of local, regional and national conflicts the former generals now in government, have decided to focus on tourism and have worked hard since 2010 to develop Burma’s tourism sector. Ngapali, a small costal community in Rakhine state has been developed into a tourism destination with hotels and restaurants, all located on a beautiful beach. Tourism has great implications for communities, both negative and positive. For Ngapali the development of tourism led to an increased amount of jobs in the tourism sector. The access to hospitality training and education also increased. Educated and trained staff were able to demand higher wages for themselves and they managed to access further hospitality training at other tourist destinations in Burma. The few Burmese Rohingya employed at the hotels did unfortunately not share this rather empowered position the Burmese Buddhists had as they fell victim to severe discrimination. Unfortunately the development of tourism in Ngapali led to a conflict between the hotels located at the beach and the fishermen who traditionally had used the beach for drying fish. The lack of participation from local population in the development of tourism was also problematic. The Burmese government chose to design the tourism sector in Ngapali as they pleased without taking the local community into account. The use of hotel zones, sand mining, lack of infrastructure thus leading all tourists to fly to Ngapali, the fact that the hotels used already scarce water and electricity resources and the discrimination and ill-treatment of marginalized groups made the tourism sector unsustainable. In addition to these local conflicts and issues the over-all situation in Rakhine, and even Burma, make the future for Ngapali as a tourism destination very uncertain.

Player Exploration and Behaviors : The Influence of Player Navigation

Runsten Fredriksson, Malin January 2018 (has links)
Guiding a player through a 3D environment can be a difficult task, especially in a game with a choice of multiple paths. Because of this, designers are often forced to implement various navigational tools such as maps, user interface (UI) elements and written explanations to help the player get from one point to another. This study explores the possibility of using research of spatial design along with player exploration patterns to better influence how player navigates in game environments.Player background and player navigation pattern data were gathered through a survey taken by 97 participants. This survey contained 13 pictures with multiple pathways, where participants needed to choose a pathway for different stated contexts. The pictures themselves were based on research of design methods meant to help guide or communicate to the player via the environment. The result showed that it is possible to influence players if the

A less monstrous mirror : Creating empathetic, likeable, and accurate mentally ill characters in computer games

Rothberg, Nicole January 2018 (has links)
This study is about possibilities for improving representation of mentally ill characters in roleplaying computer games. The areas of improvement are empathy for the characters by the players, enjoyment of the game by players, and more accurate depictions of mental illness in computer games. The qualitative study created three unique character concepts, each with two backstories/game concepts, and interviewed respondents on the three aforementioned areas. The research focused on common stereotypes held in modern society and the history of these embedded beliefs, as well as what mental illness really looks like and how negative stereotypes affect an audience. The research also covers current representation of mental illness in video games and analyses their depictions. The study concludes that stereotypes about mentally ill people are harmful, and that accurate and empathetic representations of mentally ill characters in video games should begin with detailed research and respect for the issue at hand.
