(RE)ASSEMBLING INTEGRATION : Swedish for Truck Drivers as a Context for IntegratingVan Cleave, Kayla January 2019 (has links)
‘Integration’ is often referred to in Swedish policy documents and analyzed by measures of effectivity and structural adjustment, assuming acculturation and essentialization of populations. This thesis explores how integration is practiced and defined within the context of professional adult education for newly arrived immigrants. The main case study focuses on Swedish for Professionals (SFX) and specifically, the Swedish for truck drivers (SFL) program as sites where the lifeworlds of teachers and students emerge as an actor-network of integrative forces. By relying on ethnographic methods including semi-structured interviews and participant observation the informants’ own narrative of entering society surfaces. Actor- network theory and community of practice theory lift the informants’ actions and accounts to assemble a community of integrators located within a network of integration. Tracing the voices, actions and interactions of the participants at SFX and SFL in particular, results in a contextual version of integration that relays their subjective experiences and explains the social and material processes involved in them ‘coming into society.’ The lived-in experiences of integration offered in this thesis both compares and contrasts to forms of integration offered in political and scholastic discussions.

NEW ROADS TAKEN BY FEW : Motorcycle-taxi drivers and neoliberal development in rural UgandaÖbom, Alexander January 2019 (has links)
Kisoro, a rural district in Uganda, is undergoing various transformations which could be summarized under the term neoliberal development. This qualitative study, which is based on six weeks of anthropological fieldwork, is focused on how a few individuals working as motorcycle-taxi drivers in the area experience these transformations, and how they deal with them. The results indicate that while they tend to describe them as “development”, they see them as constituting an uneven form of development - not beneficial to all, something which, in their view, makes this development less genuine. It is commonly associated with various “others”; carried out by and for others, while the informants have to live off the leftovers from it, were the motorcycle-taxi job is seen as such a leftover; neither enabling much upward - nor geographical - mobility. In some cases, they feel included in transformations which makes things worse, so it all constitutes not only a limited, but a somehow distorted development, and there is nostalgia around better pasts. But simultaneously, many also feel free, and as their hopes for inclusion in a genuine development erodes while they wait for it, inspiration from an external world makes them strive for a more individualized prosperity.

Barns trygghet i förskolan / Children´s Safety in PreschoolJohansson, Alexandra January 2019 (has links)
This study is about educators ' views on children´s safety in preschool. To produce a result for the study, I have chosen to conduct qualitative interviews. During the interviews, questions were asked about teachers ' views on children's safety in preschool and how they work with children's safety in preschool. The result showed that security is a prerequisite for children to learn in preschool and for them to dare to explore the preschool world. To get the children safe in the preschool, the result shows that it was of great importance that the educators were engaged with the children in order to create relationships with the children. Also respecting the integrity of children was part of the work to create security for children in preschool.

The intention of this essay is to examine how the political commentators from three different kinds of media (evening, morning, public service) portray the party leaders after the election of 2018 in Sweden. My first specific research task is to analyze how the commentators portray the party leaders according to Kenneth Burke´s pentadic analysis. Hereafter, I aim to identify the intended audience that the commentator could have in mind. For this question it is important to analyze how they use language as a way to depict the political reality. The theoretical framework for this essay is based on Burke´s dramatism, terministic screens and identification, and Edwin Black´s second persona. The result shows that two of the commentators have fairly the same way to present the narrative of the dramatic pentad. They frequently highlight the purpose of the way the party leaders handle the situation. The other commentator, from the evening paper, strongly emphazises the lack of action from the politicians after the election. All commentators use a language that mostly depicts the politics as a game or strategy – but the tone differ from accusatory to understanding towards the party leaders. The analysis shows that the overall intended audience probably is quite politically interested, but from different political parties and ideologies.

Pricing for the players or the hobbyists? : A look into Games Workshop pricingEngstrand, Sebastian January 2018 (has links)
This paper looks into the pricing of Warhammer 40 000 miniature, manufactured by the company Games Workshop. On some internet forums there has been a discussion on whether the prices rise without giving anything in return, and whether the company cares about the players or the hobbyists. To help answer this question the correlation coefficiant between the price of the miniatures in both Pound and the in game Points and between Swedish Krona and in game Points was calculated. If a correlation exist between the two that would mean one gets a relatively similar points return per Pound, Swedish Krona or other currency spent. This was done on 139 different samples of miniatures/units. The results indicates that there is indeed a strong correlation between the two. This could mean that either the price is dependent on the points or vice versa. Higher price leads to higher points though, meaning that the customer get a similar amount of points relative to what they spend in money. This means, from a game perspective you get relatively the same back from you investment. To answer whether one gets something back in return for a higher price, the answer would be a higher amount of points.

The paradox of women migrant workers: agency and vulnerabilities. : Understanding the perspective of women migrant workers in Amman, JordanLopez, Maria Mercedes January 2018 (has links)
Migration has taken place throughout human history. However, push and pull factors for migration have changed, and some have not been identified during long periods of time. Since 1970, migration studies have paid more attention to the role of women in migration processes, noting that patterns in migration are sometimes similar to men, but many other times differ, this is also known as the feminization of migration. Women, like men, migrate in search for a better future and new opportunities. Moreover, women migrant workers migrate to provide better future for their families back home. However, this migration process leaves great exposure to abuse and exploitation for both men and women. Feminist research argues, however, that this vulnerability is also gendered, affecting women and men differently. This study aims to contribute to understand the paradox of the agency of women migrant workers on the one hand, and vulnerabilities on the other, from the perspective of migrants themselves. Eleven interviews were conducted with women migrant workers in Amman. Some of the findings of this study show that the interviewees choose to migrate mainly due to economic needs, familial constraints and social structures, which in turn influence their power over their rights and situation, leaving them in vulnerable conditions prone to abuse. Moreover, the alternatives for migration are limited by social and economic structures, in addition to lack of knowledge of rights and obligations.

“The art of writing history” is a study of gender representation in art history literature. It investigates how women and women’s art are represented in a selection of modernist literature, and analyzes this in relation to gender order. It is a qualitative study that includes four books in the Umeå University course “Art history A1”. The paper also consists of interviews with four former students and a teacher of art history, all of whom have read the literature for teaching or learning. The subject matter of the included literature is the era of modernism, from 1870-1970. The literature is analyzed using close-reading and reading against the grain. These methods make it possible to expose the difference in how artists are treated depending on their gender. Additionally, it enables one to see how a canon is formed in art history literature. The results of the analysis showed that male artists were canonized more frequently than female artists. Words like “genius” and “masterpiece” are only used to describe male, not female, artists. Women’s personal and emotional life was deemed significant, while for male artists it was not. In the literature, women were marginalized and men were made undeniable in the field of art and modernism.

Who gets to talk about Sweden? : An analysis of PBS Newshour, FOX News and CNN’s choice of news sources in news features about Sweden.Landt, Erika January 2019 (has links)
This essay examines which news sources gets to talk about Sweden in American news features about events in Sweden and if they give a positive or negative image of Sweden. I opted to examine three of the main news channels in the USA: PBS, FOX and CNN. I examined, more specifically, the sources gender, nationality and ethnicity, and which social position and status they had. Furthermore I also examined whether the sources were verbal or non-verbal and if they were visible or anonymous. Lastly I did an analysis of whether the sources gave a positive or negative image of Sweden in the news features. To execute the study I used the quantitative content analysis as my method. The results of the study show that the majority of the sources, used in American news features about events in Sweden, were Swedish professional males, who gave a negative image of Sweden. The majority of the sources were also visible and verbal. A small amount of the sources were anonymous, and PBS only used visible sources. The result did not differentiate much between the news channels, except when it came to if the sources were verbal or non-verbal. Every source used in PBS were verbal and the majority of the sources in FOX were verbal. In CNN’s news features, however, the majority of the news sources were non-verbal.

” It’s like one more room in the preschool, use it well!” : A qualitative study about preschool teacher’s views on how they apply outdoor activities to their daily routine.Sundin, Emma January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to study preschool teacher’s perceptions of how they relate to outdoor education in their daily activities. The study was completed with qualitative interviews with 4 preschool teachers working in a big city and they have a varied access to their own pre-school yard and different qualifications to perform outdoor educations. The participants have been working in preschools between 2 -18 years. The results are presented based on the studies two questions of issues and shows that all 4 participants consider that they perform good outdoor education in one way or another. They mean that they plan their outdoor activities spontaneous and based on the influence of the children and their interest. In outdoor education, the teachers have a big roll. They need to be absent, openminded in their roll and become co- researchers with the children. In the results you can see that you don’t need your own pre- school yard to have a good outdoor education. If you let the children discover their local environment and visit museums or other places, makes the education more meaningful. All four pre- school teachers agree that the outdoor space is important, and it should be used as an extra room at the pre-school, with a yard or not, that you have to take care of.
