Are trade unions winners or losers in EU policymaking? : A study of ETUC’s and BusinessEurope’s relative influence in the EU consultation of social partners under article 154 TFEU

Wolf, Signe January 2021 (has links)
This thesis investigated the influence imbalance between worker’s and employer’s interest in the EU policymaking. It is assumed that worker’s interests are disadvantaged, and this study is therefore examining the consultation of social partners under article 154 TFEU that considers social policy and can be used as a most-likely case for worker’s influence. The study is conducted by identifying conflicts between ETUC and BusinessEurope in their consultation replies and compare the different opinions with the Commission’s legislative proposal to find out which organisation that succeeded in influencing the Commission within each conflict. The results from this shows that each consultation generated between 0 to 6 conflicts and that most of the conflicts were won by BusinessEurope. This strengthens the assumption that there is an influence imbalance in EU legislation that makes the employer’s organisation BusinessEurope more influential than the trade unions ETUC.

Establishment of interaction partners of Plasmodium falciparum heat shock protein 70-x(PfHsp 70-x)

Monyai, Florina Semakaleng 18 May 2018 (has links)
MSc (Biochemistry) / Department of Biochemistry / Plasmodium falciparum is a unicellular protozoan parasite that causes malaria in humans. The parasite is passed to humans through mosquito bites and migrates to the liver before it infects host erythrocytes. It is at the erythrocytic stage of development that the parasite causes malaria pathology. Malaria is characterized by the modification of host erythrocytes making them cytoadherent. This is as a result of formation of protein complexes (knobs) on the surface of the erythrocyte. The knobs that develop on the surface of the erythrocyte are constituted by proteins of host origin as well as some proteins that the parasite ‘exports’ to the host cell surface. Nearly 550 parasite proteins are thought to be exported to the infected erythrocyte. Amongst the exported proteins is P. falciparum heat shock protein 70-x (PfHsp70-x). Hsp70 proteins are known to maintain protein homeostasis. Thus, the export of PfHsp70-x may be important for maintaining protein homeostasis in the host cell. PfHsp70-x is not essential for parasite survival although is implicated in the development of parasite virulence. This is possibly through its role in facilitating the trafficking of parasite proteins to the erythrocyte as well as supporting the formation of protein complexes that constitute the knobs that develop on the surface of the infected erythrocyte. The main objective of the current study was to investigate protein interaction partners of PfHsp70-x. It is generally believed that PfHsp70-x interacts with various proteins of human and parasite origin. Potential candidate interactors include its protein substrates, Hsp70 co-chaperones such as Hsp40 members, and human Hsp70-Hsp90 organizing protein (hHop). The establishment of the PfHsp70-x interactome would highlight the possible role of PfHsp70-x in the development of malaria pathogenicity. Based on bioinformatics analysis, PfHsp70-x was predicted to interact with some exported P. falciparum Hsp40s, hHop and human Hsp90 (hHsp90). Recombinant forms of PfHsp70-x (full length and a truncated form that lacks the C-terminal EEVN motif implicated in co-chaperone binding) were expressed in E. coli BL21 Star (DE3) cells. Recombinant hHop and hHsp70 were expressed in E. coli JM109 (DE3) cells. The proteins were successfully purified using nickel affinity chromatography. Co-affinity chromatography using recombinant PfHsp70-x and immuno-affinity chromatography using PfHsp70-x specific antibody did not confirm the direct interaction of PfHsp70-x with human Hop. However, the direct interaction of hHop and PfHsp70-x has previously been validated in vitro and the current bioinformatics data support ii the existence of such a complex. PfHsp70-x was not stable in the cell lysate that was prepared and this could explain why its interaction with hHop could not be ascertained. However, taken together the evidence from a previous independent study, and the predicted interaction of PfHsp70-x with human chaperones suggests cooperation of chaperone systems which possibly facilitates the folding and function of parasite proteins that are exported to the infected erythrocyte. / NRF

Česko-německý asymetrický vztah a jeho překonávání na příkladu hospodářské roviny spolupráce / Asymmetry in Czech-German relationship and dealing with it in the sphere of economic co-operation

Bučková, Marie January 2019 (has links)
The study deals with Czech-German economic relations during 1991 - 2016, viewed from the perspective of the theory of asymmetrical dyads. The Czech-German relationship can be perceived as asymmetrical on the basis of inequality between the political-economic possibilities of Czech Republic (CR) - the weaker and Germany - the stronger. Despite this, there are many common aspects such as foreign policy orientation and the nature of the economy. CR and Germany are in many respects compatible with each other and economically complementary. They have similar culture, are geographically close and there are many transactions between them. At the same time, they are connected by a common past and by overcoming conflicts issues. Despite many qualities of Czech-German relationship, the Czech side has traditionally addressed securing its security, freedom and prosperity. After the fall of the "Iron Curtain", Germany engaged in the political-economic transformation of Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, which turned into a democratic system with market- oriented economy. The development of Czech-German economic relations for the CR meant chance for economic growth, access to technology and, within the framework of business cooperation, to global markets, in addition to the identical institutional context of NATO...

On Stranger Tides : An exploratory study on how digital start-ups navigate through business model adaptation in volatile environments

Sensenhauer, Sophie, Elmi, Jasmin January 2020 (has links)
In recent years, new technologies have led to disruption and change within most industries, resulting in the emergence of digitally-born start-ups. The purpose of this thesis is to complement the scarce theory about what the drivers of business model adaptation in start-ups consist of and how the adaptation process is managed to stay competitive. The findings not only provide theoretical contributions, but can also help managers to steer their start-upsthrough the growth phase. The research is set within the realms of business model theory in the strategic management field. An exploratory study with a qualitative, inductive approach was chosen to gain insights into the business model dynamics of nine firms from the fintech and healthtech industries. The results showed that foreign market adaptation, industry dynamics, funding, and legislation are perceived challenges, whereas legislation and exogenous shocks are opportunities that drive business model adaptation in start-ups. The business model elements of strategic decision-making, resources and capabilities, and network and partners were found to be integral to the adaptation process, as their core components not only need to be adapted to the environment but also aligned with each other. Those components should be revised in an iterative trial-and-error process driven by feedback.

Kommunikation och samarbete i ett byggprojekt : Hur uppfattar vi varandra? / Communication and cooperation in a construction project : How do we intrepret each other?

Edman, Robert, Lunde, Christopher January 2014 (has links)
The construction industry is considered to be a conservative industry both in technology and forms of cooperation. The immense pressure on the construction industry and the large number of construction projects that are currently being undertaken in a number of complications arise. This may be due to time constraints, skill shortages and cooperation problems. In some projects the cooperation between the project partners works very well, but in too many projects the collaboration between the parties is inadequate. This can result in "unnecessary" financial and or timing implications. In society today, communication is the key to a successful cooperation. Even in the construction industry communication are highlighted as a key to a successful project. The industry is in a position where this debate is interesting but not yet being highlighted. Our goal with this study is to bring this debate and examine how cooperation between the parties really works, why it works/does not work and how it might be improved. The thesis examines the interplay between the four actors Client, Project Manager/Construction Manager, project planning Consultant and Contractor to investigate what sometimes creates this lack of communication and cooperation problems. Through interviews and empirical studies, we have created an impression of how the parties perceive cooperation and communication in past and current projects. What have they missed? How do they work? How would they like to work together and develop communication for the better? As a mainstay of the interviews, an electronic survey carried out in which 113 responses recorded, processed, analyzed. Those who had access to the electronic survey are companies where the interviews made and officers from an additional ten different companies of varying size and turnover. Based on the interviews and the electronic survey, we can conclude that the general perception to other parties on a construction project is very good with a few reservations. Along the issue we did initially, we can now conclude that the contract form is less important for communication and collaboration in a project. However, we have concluded that there are certain keywords in order to achieve good communication and good cooperation in a project. The key words we've come up with is: the start of a project, shared goals, personal chemistry, decisiveness, clarity, and knowledge.

Konsensuální násilí jako kulturní prvek sexuality / Consensual Violence as a Cultural Element of Sexuality

Špráchalová, Lucie January 2021 (has links)
The present doctoral thesis is focused on consensual forms of sexual violence. In both theoretical and empirical aspects, it is based on existing information available in Czech as well as foreign research. Furthermore, this thesis utilises general findings of research on partner violence, as this topic has a long tradition at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. The selected topic is understood as a social phenomenon that is gradually becoming a part of culture. It includes a number of medical, psychological and legal aspects; the sociological approach, however, is central, both in employed methodology and in the utilisation of partial sociological theories. This thesis endeavours to assess to what extent the issue of consensual sexual violence becomes a part of culture and to what extent there is a shift from the sphere of intimate relationships and communities to a more or less open market environment and the Internet. Given the breadth of scope and the highly specific nature of the topic, the present thesis makes use of several sources of both quantitative and qualitative data from 2015- 2019. The paper explores in detail especially the attitudes and the degree of tolerance in the Czech population towards selected forms of violence, including consensual...

Diagnosis and Treatment of Peripheral Arterial Disease Compared With Other Atherosclerotic Vascular Diseases in a University Primary Care Clinic

Ismail, Hassan, Jackson, Kyoo, Smith, Daniel 01 January 2006 (has links)
Background: Despite the fact that peripheral arterial disease (PAD) significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality, it is significantly underdiagnosed and underrated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practice at a northeast Tennessee university primary care clinic regarding the diagnosis and treatment of PAD. Methods: A retrospective medical record survey was conducted to evaluate practice patterns in diagnosing and treating PAD in a university primary care clinic. A clinic population of 711 patients was selected using International Classification of Diseases-9 codes for coronary artery disease (CAD), cerebovascular disease (CVD), and/ or PAD. A sample of 180 patients (25.3%) was randomly selected using a systematic statistical method. Of these, 125 patients met the diagnostic criteria for CAD, CVD, and/or PAD. The study covered a 3-year period, from July 2001 until June 2004. Demographic and other data, including the use of antiplatelet therapy, were collected. Results: One hundred ten patients met all of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Thirty-nine percent were males, and 61% were females. Overall, 79% had CAD, 53% had CVD, and 25% had PAD. Almost half of the patients had some combination of these. Only about 2% had PAD only compared with 36% with CAD only and 17% with CVD only. Although the prevalence of CAD and CVD (among other atherosclerotic vascular diseases) in our clinic was comparable to national figures, the prevalence of PAD was significantly lower (p = .004). The overall use of any antiplatelet agent was 84.2% for patients with only CAD and 80% for only CVD. There was not an adequate number of patients with only PAD to evaluate the use of antiplatelet therapy in this group. Conclusion: The low prevalence of PAD only (most PAD patients had coexisting CAD and CVD) indicates that PAD is underdiagnosed at our clinic. There was suboptimal use of aspirin and other antiplatelet drugs among patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease.
