Investing in Play: Expectations, Dependencies and Power in Australian Practices of Community Cultural Development

McEwen, Celina January 2008 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis is an enquiry into the social and political role, in Australia, of practices that have attracted such labels as ‘community arts’, ‘cultural animation’, ‘cultural action’, or ‘community cultural development’ (CCD). It is often argued that such practices offer an effective means to bring about social and political change for people and communities who participate in them. Looking specifically at theatre-based approaches to CCD in Australia, this thesis examines an alternative hypothesis, namely that such projects and programs can contribute to the continued marginalisation of those who take part in them. Using a combination of Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical approach to field analysis, Don Handelman’s analytical framework of special events and Baz Kershaw’s theory of potential efficacy, I carry out an ethnographic and performance-based analysis of a particular project called The Longest Night (TLN), which was devised in collaboration with young people from The Parks, a cluster of suburbs north west of Adelaide, South Australia, and in collaboration between Urban Theatre Projects, a small Sydney-based theatre company with a reputation for doing socially and politically challenging work, young people living in The Parks and local partner organisations, for the 2002 Adelaide Festival. I find that in some instances participation in CCD projects and programs is an enabling factor, creating change opportunities in cultural, economic and/or political spheres in the lives of those who take part, whilst at other times it is a constraining factor. Participation in CCD projects and programs creates possibilities because the practices are potentially subversive and foster elements of learning and change in some participants. It also creates limitations because CCD practitioners operate within a subfield of social and cultural practices where the mechanisms and structures in place, indirectly, tend to help reproduce legitimised social and cultural values and norms.

This study througt to identify the origins, trends and perspectives of the Science Education area in order to contribute to the visibility of its constitution and institutionalization as a scientific field that presents its own characteristics and culture, besides its impact on the production of knowledge in the educational field in the country. Through methodological procedures involving the development of the trajectory of bibliographic, documental, field and theoretical researches, we have tried to reach this objective, through the appropriation of theoretical subsidies, in particular, under the perspective of the Pierre Bourdieu's theory. This has allowed us to identify, describle and lead to the understanding of present relational concepts and institutionalization of this specific field in Brazil; and also the identification of a spectrum that surrounds this field, influenced by contextual limits of economic, social, political and culture nature, with emphasis on research, intellectual production and the scientific community. The results reflect the relations between theory and practice that are present in the field of Science Education and distinguish it as field of knowledge of great relevance in the Brazilian context. Thereby, we can conclude that: the field of Science Education has a multidisciplinary character and its own historicity in the education scene; its representationis fundamentally supported by graduate programs, in its formation thermes of critical and professional mass, lines and research groups and in the scientific output. Although this field is consolidated before institutionalized organizations such as CAPES, it still needs information culture and the creation of a specialized information network for the sharing of the adequate knowledge created by its agents ... / The national programme for the Strengthening of family agriculture was an inflection in the process of conservative modernization adopted since 1964 who favored the large and medium rurals producers with various incentives for adoption of technology known as Green Revolution started in the 1950. For the first time, the small family farmer entered for the Brazilian agenda of rural development on the impulse of the broad credit program at the disposal of a heterogeneous class that was articulated throughout the 20th century until it was called Family Agriculture. In this way, the objective of the research is to identify elements for beside the economic ones that build the market of familiar agriculture in the Mario Lago settlement in Ribeirão Preto / SP. Our preliminary data indicate the construction of the market for agroforestry organic food baskets by the settlers that compose the “Comuna da Terra” Group, in addition to considering the importance of Pronaf in the initial settlement structure. For this purpose, the research required 5 months of fieldwork with visits to the settlement, with conversations, minimally formal interviews, participation in the meeting and pregão on Monday and in the organization of the baskets on Tuesdays, besides the participation as a consumer of the baskets. The theoretical methodological resource of the research is formed by the economic sociology mainly the reflective sociology of Pierre Bourdieu.

Strömdahl Östberg, Adam, Helperin, Simon January 2018 (has links)

Widergren, Johannes January 2017 (has links)

Stråby, Björn January 2018 (has links)

The way we see it: an analysis of economically disadvantaged young people's experiences and perceptions of social and economic health in their semi-rural community

Brann-Barrett, Mary-Tanya 05 1900 (has links)
This study investigates how socially and economically disadvantaged young people, living in a semi-rural, post-industrial Atlantic Canadian community, experience and perceive social and economic health -- defined as participants' sense of comfort and security that their social and economic needs are, and will continue to be, met in their community. I argue that social and educational policies and practices must reflect the realities of local citizens if they aim to interrupt regional health disparities. A key objective of this research is to expose and challenge gender, class, and regional inequalities through an analysis of young adults' social and economic health experiences and perceptions. Drawing primarily upon Pierre Bourdieu's (1990b; 2001)concepts -- habitus, field, and symbolic domination -- relations between gender, class, and historical circumstances theoretically inform this research. Employing a critical ethnographic methodological framework (Madison, 2005),experiences and perceptions of ten economically disadvantaged youth -- five women and five men, ages 19-30 -- were gathered through focus groups, individual interviews, participant observation, critical dialogue (using media to stimulate dialogue among participants), and an adaptation of photovoice (a technique combining photography and narrative). Results suggest that the social and economic health needs of economically disadvantaged young adults are not being met. They confirm Bourdieu's (1999a)assertion of an interrelationship between physical place and the positioning of agents in social fields. Participants navigate economic, cultural, and social fields, aware of their social positioning as they 'work' the fields in order to secure enough capital to 'get by'. Their struggles are examples of symbolic domination and suggest a significant psycho-social cost to young adults seeking social and economic health through various fields. Analyses of their experiences suggest a disjuncture between gendered identities ascribed to participants through historically-rooted habitus and contemporary social fields. Recommendations call for gender, class, and regional inequalities to be addressed through structural interventions and investment in long term community-based education that is integrated with local economic development initiatives. Furthermore, this research calls attention to how research agendas and procedures can actually reinforce marginalization, making it difficult for the voices of disadvantaged communities to enter into dominant public discourse. / Education, Faculty of / Educational Studies (EDST), Department of / Graduate

Disrupting the “Habitus” : How disruptive innovative offerings and services can drastically change the usual views of our current “habitus”

Mendieta, Karol January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is guided primarily by concepts associated with Pierre Bourdieu's habitus perspectives by comparing them with disruptive innovative products dynamically developing broader context related to market offerings and services, and their positive outcomes once the habitus is disrupted. Understanding how disruptive innovation can change the habitus traits among customers. At the same time, by discovering the habitus traits of managers in corporations have failed to pay close attention to the new tendencies either by ignoring the signs from customers' demands or missing significant opportunities in the market that could help them to improve the business approaches. Disruptive Innovation describes a process through which new products that underperform in comparison to existing products' key attributes intrude upon a market by introducing an alternative package of benefits centered around being cheaper, simple, smaller, and or/ more suitable for consumers demands. Thus, companies should be aware of these disruptive leanings as a form to stay competitive in the given industry.
