Múltiplas possibilidades: a internalização de práticas discursivo-sociais por dois pares de irmãos gêmeos / Multiple voices: the internalization of social discursive practices of two pairs of twins.

Na presente pesquisa foram contempladas intersecções entre os discursos de dois pares de gêmeos, seus responsáveis e dois de seus professores sobre os modos desses gêmeos agirem, pensarem e se comportarem no mundo. Procurou-se identificar se a construção das narrativas dos gêmeos sobre os significados que atribuem à vida familiar, à vida escolar, a si próprios e à relação com seu co-gêmeo é permeada pelos discursos e práticas educativas dos pais e professores e se as práticas educativas nas quais os gêmeos se inserem e os discursos que eles escutam a respeito de si próprios podem se configurar como profecias auto-realizadoras. O discurso a respeito dos processos de desenvolvimento humano, especialmente do desenvolvimento de gêmeos, costuma seguir forte tradição determinista. A fim de romper com tradições deterministas forjadas por pressupostos endógenos ou exógenos, utilizou-se referencial teórico bakhtiniano (BAKTHIN, 2003, 2009), da psicologia histórico-cultural de Vygotsky (1984, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004) e de autores que seguem essa linha teórica - como Oliveira (1990, 1993, 1997, 2002), Pino (2000, 2005), Rossetti-Ferreira et al. (2004, 2008, 2010), Smolka (1993, 2002, 2004), Rego (1994, 1996, 1998, 2004) - além de estabelecer debates com autores da sociologia (LAHIRE, 1997, 2002; ELIAS, 1994). O referencial teórico adotado privilegia as relações situadas social e historicamente, as significações que o indivíduo faz de si próprio e de seu mundo e a noção de sujeito discursivo e da importância das narrativas. Esta investigação visa compreender o lugar do outro nas narrativas e nas versões que os gêmeos construíram sobre si. Conhecer as expectativas de importantes agentes do processo educativo e as maneiras de apropriação desses discursos pelos gêmeos pode ajudar a reorientar modos de agir e de educar essa parcela da população. Apesar de a pesquisa ser feita especificamente com gêmeos, sua contribuição se dá também num campo mais amplo, do desenvolvimento em geral. Isso ocorre porque gêmeos são tratados como casos emblemáticos do estudo do desenvolvimento ao evidenciarem o caráter de construção da subjetividade, possibilitando o estudo de questões que acabam sendo postas para todos os indivíduos. Num âmbito maior, a pesquisa possibilita entender como as pessoas constroem versões de si próprias atravessadas pelos discursos que os outros constroem a respeito delas. A análise aponta para a importância de práticas sócio-discursivas dos outros para a constituição das versões que as pessoas fazem sobre si. A conclusão também incide sobre a necessária reflexão, por parte de pais e de professores, a respeito de seus papéis como mediadores entre seus filhos/alunos e o mundo cultural e simbólico que eles vivem, uma vez que as práticas discursivas e educativas utilizadas por eles são internalizadas por seus filhos/alunos. Constata-se, também, que os gêmeos fazem uma atualização dos lugares e dos significados sociais estabelecidos pelos pais e professores sobre seus modos de ser, de agir e de pensar e que as práticas sócio-discursivas podem, portanto, se configurar, muitas vezes, como fortes circunscritores dos processos de desenvolvimento desses jovens. / In the present study were covered intersections between discourses of two pairs of twins, their parents and two of their teachers about the ways these twins act, think and behave in the world. We sought to identify whether the construction of narratives of the twins on the meanings they attach to family life, school life, themselves and the relationship with their cotwin is permeated by the discourses and educational practices of parents and teachers and practices education in which the twins are in and the discourses they hear about themselves can be configured as self-fulfilling prophecies. Speaking about the processes of human development and especially the twin development typically follows a strong tradition of determinism. In order to break with tradition forged by deterministic assumptions endogenous or exogenous, we used theoretical Bakhtinian (BAKTHIN, 2003, 2009) and cultural-historical psychology of Vygotsky (1984, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004) and authors who follow this theoretical line, as Oliveira (1990, 1993, 1997, 2002), Pino (2000, 2005), Rossetti-Ferreira et al. (2004, 2008, 2010), Smolka (1993, 2002, 2004), Rego (1994, 1996, 1998, 2004) and to establish discussions with authors in sociology (LAHIRE, 1997, 2002; ELIAS, 1994) theoretical framework capable of focusing on links situated socially and historically, the meanings that the individual makes of himself and his world and the notion of subject and the importance of discursive narratives. This research aims to understand the other\'s place in the narratives and versions built on the twins themselves. Knowing the expectations of important stakeholders in the educational process and ways of appropriation of these discourses by the twins can help to reorient ways and to educate this segment of the population. Although the research was done specifically with twins, its contribution is made also in a broader field of development in general. This is because twins are treated as emblematic cases of the development study which show the character of subjectivity construction, allowing the study of questions that are put to all individuals. On a wider scale, the research allows to understand how people construct versions of themselves traversed by the speeches that others built about them. The analysis points to the importance of socio-discursive practices of others to the formation of the versions that people have about themselves. The conclusion also relates to the necessary reflection of parents and teachers about their roles as mediators between their children / students and the cultural and symbolic world that they live, as the discursive practices and practices used by them are internalized by their children / students. There is relevant that the twins make an update of the \"places\" and social meanings established by parents and teachers about their ways of being, acting and thinking and that the sociodiscursive practices can therefore be set often as strong constraints of development processes of these young people.

The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von Westhoff (1656-1705) and Its Relationship to German Polyphonic Writing for a Single Instrument

Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth-century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project will focus on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time will be included in this document. I will analyze these works, including a comparison between the works of Westhoff and those of other composers during his time, to prove that Westhoff's solo works establish multiple stops as a central factor of German violin playing of the time, and, thus, to promote Westhoff's works as a complement to the extant repertoire of unaccompanied violin music written in the Baroque era before Johann Sebastian Bach's solo violin works and Georg Philipp Telemann's twelve fantasias for violin solo. Furthermore, this project will help one to better understand the use and function of multiple stops in the German violin repertoire in the seventeenth century.

Éléments de l’énonciation discursive / Elements of discursive enunciation

En quoi peut consister l’énonciation dans le sens d’un énoncé ? Telle est l’interrogation à laquelle nous tentons de répondre dans cette thèse. Défendant une approche discursive du sens (Carel 2011, Ducrot 1984), nous nous fixons l’objectif de mettre en lumière une conception de l’énonciation dans cette perspective. Notre défi majeur est ainsi de démontrer, de manière concrète, une énonciation qui n’est pas conçue comme une sorte d’événement du monde relatif à la production d’un énoncé. Il s’agit en effet de cette conception de l’énonciation, d’ailleurs prise pour aller de soi, lorsque la plupart des auteurs (Kleiber 2008, Recanati 2008) interprètent un énoncé contenant une expression déictique tel que « Je suis Français » ou « Il fait chaud ici ». Défendant une approche référentielle du sens, ces auteurs sont amenés à repérer le référent correspondant à l’occurrence du mot « je » ou celle du mot « ici », avec la signification de l’un et l’autre mot prise respectivement comme « celui qui produit l’occurrence de je » et « le lieu où l’occurrence d’ici est produite ». Étant donné qu’un tel repérage du référent implique, de manière inévitable, de chercher dans la production de l’énoncé concerné, l’énonciation se présente ainsi comme extralinguistique et comme l’événement constitué par la production de l’énoncé. En nous appuyant, non sans une certaine liberté, sur les travaux respectifs de Benveniste (1966) et de Ducrot (1984), nous nous proposons de dresser le portrait d’une autre conception de l’énonciation qui relève plutôt du système linguistique lui-même, à la différence de celle dépendant ainsi de l’univers extralinguistique. À partir d’un fondement sémantique dégagé des travaux de ces deux auteurs, ainsi que des éléments que nous développons sur cette base, nous faisons des analyses portant essentiellement sur les marques de pronoms, afin d’illustrer la conception de l’énonciation que nous défendons. Qu’il s’agisse de l’analyse comparative entre « Je sais que p » « Tu sais que p » « Elle sait que p », ou celle entre « Je suis beau » « Tu es beau » « Il est beau », nos analyses impliquent donc certaines conséquences. D’une part, elles démontrent que les marques de pronoms peuvent comporter une valeur sémantique qui n’est pas relative à la référence ni à l’énonciation entendue comme un événement extralinguistique. D’autre part, elles permettent de voir que l’on peut rendre compte de ces éléments de sens non référentiels avec le cadre, inspiré de ces deux auteurs, que nous nous efforçons d’établir. / How to understand “enunciation” in the meaning of an utterance? This is the question we are trying to answer in this thesis. Defending a discursive approach to meaning (Carel 2011, Ducrot 1984), we set ourselves the objective of bringing light to a conception of enunciation in this perspective. Our major challenge, as a result, is to demonstrate with tangible illustrations an enunciation that is not conceived as a kind of “world event” relating to the production of an utterance. As we know, it’s about this conception of enunciation, taken for granted, when most authors (Kleiber 2008, Recanati 2008) interpret an utterance containing a deictic expression such as "I am French" or "It's hot here". Mostly defenders of the referential approach to meaning, these authors pick up the referent corresponding to the occurrence of the word "I" and that of the word "here", with the meaning of these two words taken respectively as "the one that produces the occurrence of I" and "the place where the occurrence of here is produced". Given that such an identification of the referent involves, inevitably, a look at the production of the utterance concerned, the enunciation thus appears extralinguistic and as the event constituted by the production of the utterance. Based on Benveniste (1966) and Ducrot (1984) respectively, though not without certain inspiration of our own, we try to sketch the outline of another conception of enunciation, which is the one that comes rather from the linguistic system itself, unlike the one that is dependent on the extralinguistic context. In order to illustrate this conception of enunciation, we conduct analyses mostly on pronouns, and the semantic foundation is drawn from the works of these two authors, as well as from the elements that we develop on this basis. In fact, whether it’s the comparative analysis between "I know that p" "You know that p" "She knows that p" or the one between "I'm beautiful" "You're beautiful" "He's (It’s) beautiful", our descriptions do entail consequences. On the one hand, they show that pronouns can have a semantic value that is neither relative to the reference nor to the enunciation taken as an extralinguistic event. On the other hand, our analyses show that we can account for the non-referential elements of meaning with the frame, inspired by these two authors, that we strive to develop.

La vérité polyphonique : la problématisation théorique et pratique de la dichotomie entre fiction et documentaire, précédé du film YT Remix

Ce mémoire en recherche-création comporte deux volets. Le premier volet, théorique, se penche sur les gestes de fictionnalisation intérieurs au cinéma documentaire, et notamment au cœur des symphonies urbaines L’homme à la caméra (1929) de Dziga Vertov et Amsterdam Global Village (1996) de Johan van der Keuken. Le deuxième volet, pratique, consiste en une symphonie de la ville de Montréal, YT Remix, qui se présente comme une forme particulière d’ekphrasis de l’image du monde créée par Yves Thériault dans ses romans. Les plus fréquentes définitions du documentaire indiquent le caractère non fictionnel de ce genre cinématographique, l’absence des comédiens professionnels et la présentation des événements réels. Ce sont, en essence, les principes énoncés par John Grierson en 1932, dans First Principles of Documentary. En pratique, on constate que la majorité des grandes œuvres documentaires font preuve de la précarité des limites entre la documentation du réel et sa fictionnalisation. Comme le fait remarquer Jean-Luc Godard, « Tous les grands films de fiction tendent au documentaire, comme tous les grands documentaires tendent à la fiction » (1985, p. 14). C’est le recours à la fictionnalité révélatrice de la vérité qui est évoqué à la fin du (faux) documentaire F for Fake (1975). En citant Picasso, Orson Welles conclut : « L'art est un mensonge qui nous fait comprendre la vérité ». Johan van der Keuken, le cinéaste qui nous a influencés le plus dans le choix de notre stratégie de création et à qui nous consacrons un chapitre de notre mémoire de maîtrise, a abordé lui aussi la question de la pureté des genres cinématographiques. Dans un entretien pour les Cahiers du cinéma de 1978, en évoquant l’opposition entre documentaire et fiction comme l’un des grands pièges auxquels il se heurtait au moment de l’inscription de ses films aux festivals, le réalisateur hollandais a affirmé que « tout film consciemment travaillé au niveau de la forme est un film de fiction » (Daney et Fargier 1978, p. 19). Ainsi, l’une des questions directrices de notre recherche-création est celle de la justesse d’une définition, assez réductionniste, qui exclut toutes les traces de la fictionnalité dans le documentaire. / This master’s study in research-creation is twofold. The first part, theoretical, refers to internal forms of fictionalization in documentary cinema, including the city symphonies Man with a Movie Camera (1929) by Dziga Vertov and Amsterdam Global Village (1996) by Johan van der Keuken. The second part, practical, is a Montreal city symphony, YT Remix, conceived as a special form of ekphrasis of the image of the world created by Yves Thériault in his novels. The most common documentary definitions indicate the non-fictional character of this cinematic genre, the absence of professional actors and the presentation of real events. These are, in essence, the principles enunciated by John Grierson in 1932, in First Principles of Documentary. In practice, we find that most major documentary works demonstrate the precarious boundaries between fiction and documentation of the real. As noted by Jean-Luc Godard, "All great fiction films tend towards the documentary just as all great documentaries tend toward fiction" (1985, p. 14). The possibility of fiction to reveal the truth is evoked at the end of the (fake) documentary F for Fake (1975). Quoting Picasso, Orson Welles concludes: "Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth." Johan van der Keuken, the filmmaker who has influenced us the most in the choice of our creation strategy (and to whom we devote a chapter in our master's thesis), has also addressed the question of the purity of cinematic genres. In an interview for the Cahiers du cinéma (1978), he considered the opposition between documentary and fiction as one of the biggest challenges he faced during film festivals registrations. In the same interview, the Dutch director stated that "every movie with a consciously elaborated form is, in fact, fiction" (Daney and Fargier 1978, p. 19). Thus, one of the leading questions in conducting our research-creation is about the accuracy of definition, rather reductionist, which excludes all fiction traces in documentaries.

Pluralidad de voces y conciencias independientes en dos obras de Lope de Vega

This thesis explores the relationship between the plurality of polyphonic and independent voices and consciousnesses, a Mikhail Bakhtin's concept, in two plays by Lope de Vega. El maestro de Danzar y El bobo del colegio are two of his least known and studied. Both plays present protagonists, simple citizens, which pretend to court two noble ladies. Under these circumstances, they are forced to avoid social rejection, issue guaranteed by their humble lineage. In order to complete their undertaking, they disguise as a dance teacher and a university fool. This process shields them from, the above mentioned, traditional disapproval they are subject to. It also entitles them to become, symbolically and virtually, the main dialogic executors in the play. Bakhtin depicts the process of embracing an alternate identity, different from their own, as a vital part of carnival. It compels the leading characters, El maestro and El bobo being no exception, to undergo two changes. First, they become a new individual, recognizable only to those who are aware of their masks. Second, their voices attract attention to the point of influencing the preeminent nobles of the comedy to follow their lead. Further, their ideas come to matter more than those of any other voice in the comedy. In the beginning they follow an ideal, and are subdued by social hierarchy. At the conclusion, they finish leading and controlling the polyphonic relationship between the independent voices and consciousnesses of the other characters in the play. And rather than a conflict, both comedies depict a harmonic social interaction of all their characters. Although scholarship exists analyzing individual plays, a comprehensive study of the effective association between language and disguise favoring a villano over high-class citizens has never been undertaken. This is Lope's strategy to plainly contrast the traditional social differentiation of classes.

Cette thèse consacrée à Die Ausgewanderten de W.G. Sebald (1992) procède à une étude microscopique et détaillée de l’écriture dans sa singularité, une radiographie du texte et de sa matérialité hétérogène. L’étude montre la structure binaire sous-jacente de l’ouvrage, la complexité des stratégies stylistiques et narratives, la manière dont le signifiant se soumet à l’impératif catégorique du signifié mais aussi la prééminence de signes tangentiels et obliques ; elle s’intéresse également à la singularité de l’enchaînement des discours rapportés et met en lumière le geste mélancolique du narrateur sébaldien. Il apparaît que l’intertextualité revêt une spécificité particulière puisque la polyphonie sébaldienne est orientée différemment de celle envisagée par M. Bakhtine. La deuxième partie s’attache à étudier la critique de la civilisation (Kulturkritik) dans une œuvre fortement marquée par la constellation idéologique de l’École de Francfort et plus précisément par « La Dialectique de la Raison » de Horkheimer et d’Adorno. La prose allemande muséale de l’auteur, qui rappelle celle d’Adalbert Stifter mais aussi, par ses emboîtements narratifs, emprunte la virtuosité bernhardienne, est incrustée de « moments » de bonheur ou de beauté qui mettent en évidence et soulignent l’inouï du monde concentrationnaire. Les thématiques de l’exil et du pays natal sont au centre des intérêts de la troisième partie. L’étude s’attache à montrer que l’ouvrage réécrit en quelque sorte une littérature de l’exil que l’auteur, professeur de littérature de langue allemande, a eu l’occasion de fréquenter mais aussi d’analyser. C’est un « chœur d’exilés » qui se fait entendre dans Die Ausgewanderten et qui manifeste la tragédie de l’homme moderne. / This thesis on The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald (1992) focuses on a microscopic and detailed study of Sebald’s writing in its specificity, a radiography of the text and of its heterogeneous materiality. The study pays attention to the binary structure of the work, the complexity ot the stylistic and narrative strategies, the way the signifier obeys the categorical imperative of the signified and the primacy of tangential and oblique signs ; it also deals with the singular linking of reported speech and underlines the melancholic gesture of the narrator. It appears that intertextuality owns a particuliar specificity because the polyphony it creates differs from the Bakhtinian model. The second part deals with cultural criticism (Kulturkritik) which owes a lot to the ideological model of the Frankfurt School and to Horkheimer and Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment in particular. The museum-like German prose of the author, which recalls that of Adalbert Stifter, but also, thanks to narrative nesting, emulates the virtuosity of Thomas Bernhard, is embellished with happy or beautiful “moments” which underline and emphasize the unprecedentedness of the extermination camps. The third part will set out the themes of exile and the native country. The study underlines that The Emigrants reconstructs a literature of exile that the author, a professor of German literature, has perused, studied and analysed. The chorus of emigrants that can be heard imparts what the tragedy of modern man amounts to. / Diese Dissertation über Die Ausgewanderten von W.G. Sebald (1992) führt eine mikroskopische Untersuchung der Schreibweise, ein “Röntgenbild” des Textes und dessen heterogener Materialität durch. Die Studie legt die binäre Struktur des Werks an den Tag, beschreibt die Vielschichtigkeit der stilistischen und narrativen Strategien, die Unterordnung des Signifikanten unter den kategorischen Imperativ des Signifikaten, aber auch den Vorrang des tangentialen und indirekten Zeichens. Sie kommentiert ebenfalls die sonderbare Einschachtelung der direkten Rede und den melancholischen Gestus des Erzählers, und arbeitet die eigenartige Dimension der Intertextualität im Rahmen der vom Bachtinschen Modell stark abweichenden sebaldischen Polyphonie heraus. Der zweite Teil geht auf die kulturkritische Dimension ein, die durch die ideologische Konstellation der Frankfurter Schule, beziehungsweise durch die Dialektik der Aufklärung von Horkheimer und Adorno tief geprägt ist. Die museale deutsche Prosa des Schriftstellers, die an diejenige Adalbert Stifters, infolge der narrativen Einschachtelungen aber auch an die Virtuosität Thomas Bernhards erinnert, ist mit Glücks- oder Schönheitsmomenten verziert, die das Unerhörte der Shoah umso mehr unterstreichen. Im dritten Teil steht die Thematik von Exil und Heimat im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Es wird deutlich, dass W.G. Sebald eine Literatur des Exils umschreibt, mit der er Umgang und geistigen Austausch gepflegt hat, die er erforscht und kommentiert hat. Hier ist ein “Chor von Ausgewanderten” zu hören, der die Tragödie des modernen Menschen zum Ausdruck bringt

The comparative method was used to promoving a dialogue between brazilian and portuguese literature. The authors made a History s critical revision, when through fiction, anonymous and stranger people had opportunity to show a new version of facts. In this way, the forgetful people and everyone who were quiet or had kept in silence by oficial history for years earned voice. The fictional procedures and organization of narratives reveal ideological marks of past that contrast with present, we have the time of history in direct confront with time of writing. Feminine characters are agents of social transformation, too. They keep themselves an ideological speech which approach them to the present. They look into their reality, and thought acute sense show us aspects of nature and human relationship had never seen before. The sensibility, capacity to appreciate the world and years of repression make the feminine characters a spokeswomen of excluded people such as poors, women and jewish beyond all persons who had an inadequate behaviour to pattern of period. Therefore, our purpose was reveal the manner as writters articulated literature elements mixing ideological aspects of present and past, history and fiction to build a ficcional universe which destroy the dominant ideology / Neste trabalho fizemos uma análise da estrutura narrativa dos romances Desmundo de Ana Miranda e Memorial do Convento de José Saramago e das respectivas personagens Oribela e Blimunda. Utilizamos o método comparativo como instrumento de análise com o propósito de promover o diálogo entre as literaturas brasileira e portuguesa. Os romances fazem uma revisão crítica da história ao dar voz aos esquecidos, àqueles que foram calados pela História oficial. A organização estética, os procedimentos literários comuns ao corpus evidenciam marcas ideológicas de um tempo histórico que se contrapõem ao tempo da escritura. Por outro lado, a construção de personagens femininas que se destacam pelas atitudes e pela forma diferente de pensar e enfrentar a realidade, tornam-nas agentes de transformação social, portadoras de um discurso ideológico que as aproximam da contemporaneidade. É por meio da agudeza do olhar que essas personagens conseguem apreender o real em todas as suas nuanças e perceber aspectos da natureza e das relações humanas, impossíveis de serem captadas por indivíduos cuja visão é embotada pelo processo de automatização social. A sensibilidade, a capacidade de apreensão do mundo e o fato de ter sido calada durante tanto tempo, faz da personagem feminina uma espécie de porta-voz dos excluídos, seu discurso ganha uma dimensão que extrapola os limites do próprio romance. Continuous curatorial conversations : an exploration of the role of conversation within the writing of a supplementary history of the curatorial

Continuous Curatorial Conversations is a practice-led exploration of conversation, both as a medium and as a tool for capturing supplementary histories of the curatorial. The primary question of this research project is how the medium of conversation can be explored to write supplementary histories of the curatorial which thus far have been omitted from extant publications on the subject. Three important sub questions guide this exploration. First, what is and has been the role of conversation within the curatorial? What are the possibilities and limitations within the medium of conversation? What roles do conviviality and hospitality play within the process of conversation? This thesis reflects upon a series of curated projects that explore the sp/pl/ace for curatorial conversation and also reviews a collection of one-to-one recorded conversations conducted by the author, including conversations with Alfredo Cramerotti, Hedwig Fijen, Mel Gooding, William Furlong and Sarah Lowndes. Sites of fieldwork include: the 54th Venice Biennale; Manifesta 8, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art; and Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2012. Through these projects and related recordings it unpicks the norms and possibilities of what and when one can record on the subject of the curatorial. The hypothesis of this study is that a great deal of curatorial activity is locked up in conversation, yet a disproportion makes it to the pages of the history of the field. Furthermore, in its clean transcribed form it misrepresents the fragility and nuance of the original exchange. The theoretical context of this research looks at Nicolas Bourriaud’s notion of Relational Aesthetics, the writing of Maria Lind and Paul O’Neill, with a focus on Audio Arts. A new methodology relating to curatorial conversation and its recording has therefore been identified as ‘critical conviviality’. The writing relating to Continuous Curatorial Conversations research takes the form of four books. The book ‘An Introduction’ comprises the PhD thesis and sits next to a bespoke online platform www.continuous-curatorial-conversations.org which hosts a selection of audio recordings collated during the research process. The books ‘Continuous’, ‘Curatorial’, and ‘Conversations’ unpack the lineage and context of Alexandra C.M. Ross’s practice and projects conducted during her research and are to be read in no strict order. The new knowledge resulting from this thesis and relating practice is the attention to the subtleties of conversation and its capture as it relates to the instigation, recording and presentation of semi-private matters in semi-public contexts.

This dissertation attempts to investigate the intertextual modus operandi in the oeuvre of H.J. Pieterse, with specific focus on his volumes, Alruin (1989) and Die burg van hertog Bloubaard (2000). The overarching purpose of the investigation is to prove that the author not only uses intertextuality in the sense that one text (literary text) refers to another text (literary and non–literary), or that one text influences another. Pieterse engages in conversation with other texts and re–writes these texts by repositioning them in another context and by adding additional metaphoric meaning to them. The author allows these texts to exchange conversation, to mutually influence one another, and this has as a result that, in his poems, his poetry and his oeuvre, metaphoric lines come into being, which lend a layered meaning to these texts and enrich the possibilities of their interpretation. Thus, a play on multiple meaning develops, which moves between texts: written texts, literary texts, non–literary texts, the author, the reader and the context(s). The conclusion to which this dissertation comes, is that the above mentioned manifestations of meanings, which exist and come into existence within the physically confines of the text, expand this text to a less confined existence in terms of meaning, more unlimited and unbound than what is necessarily allowed by the physically confined nature of the written text. The question thus arises of how the physically limited text take possession of and draws into the texts what lies beyond its physical confines to produce meaning, and how this tension around the limits of the literary text is functionally used. Consequentially, the question that follows is how this happens in the oeuvre of H.J.
