The researcher applied the Gestalt paradigm and the theories of existential dialogue and the field theory to this study. A qualitative, interpretive, descriptive design was followed. Non-probability purposive sampling was used whereby 14 participants were purposively selected based on their involvement in a cohort workshop organised by the Centre for Child, Youth and Family Studies (CCYF) in Wellington in the Western Cape. Data was collected through a World Café session with the post-graduate students. Thematic data analysis was used to identify themes among the data. The findings indicated a distinction between relational qualities embedded in the self, relational qualities that are essential for social connection and relational qualities that are critical in leadership. The aim of this research is to understand female secondary school educators' personality awareness in relation to work related stress, with particular reference to an independent school in Witbank, Mpumalanga, South Africa. In the literature study I determined the nature of work related stress in educators' lives and investigated personality awareness. My empirical research established the level of work related stress experienced by female educators and how an awareness of different personalities may influence the person's experience of work related stress. The research methods were qualitative in nature and included an interview as well as focus group observations. Findings suggested that all the educators were stressed to a lesser or greater degree, but the critical fact was that what is stressful to one person may not be stressful to another. The role of communication in strenthening parent-teacher relationships in primary schools

Parent involvement is consistently ranked high among the key components of effective schools, and as a result is one of the brightest prospects for the future of public education. This study sought to develop a reliable measure to strengthen parent-teacher relationships that included previously unidentified aspects. Using a qualitative approach, 27 participants were purposely selected to be interviewed in order to determine the challenges stakeholders face in arranging constructive parent-teacher relationships. In addition to parents-teacher relationships, the goal was to determine the role of school principals in managing effective communication to strengthen these relationships between parents and teachers. Results identified numerous reliable parent involvement factors reflecting home monitoring, effective school involvement, and educational management. Attitude toward learning and competence motivation of learners learning behavior were positively identified when all stakeholders work together as a team. Résumé : Introduction : L’ataxie récessive spastique de Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSCS) est une maladie neuromusculaire héréditaire rare qui affecte notamment les voies spinocérébelleuses. Elle est caractérisée par une triple composante de signes et symptômes incluant l’ataxie et la dysarthrie (atteintes cérébelleuses), la spasticité aux membres inférieurs (atteintes pyramidales) et une faiblesse distale qui engendre des difficultés de préhension (atteintes neuropathiques). Des avancées récentes permettent de croire que des essais thérapeutiques seront bientôt possibles. Dans ce contexte, il est nécessaire de développer une échelle de gravité de la maladie pour permettre la sélection des patients et la documentation de l’histoire naturelle. But : L’objectif de ce projet était de développer les items de la section cérébelleuse du Disease Severity Index for Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (DSI-ARSACS) et de documenter ses qualités métrologiques. Méthode : La section cérébelleuse a été élaborée à l’aide du modèle de développement de Streiner et Norman (2008) qui comprend trois grandes étapes : planification, construction et validation. La planification et la construction ont été réalisées à l’aide de consultations d’experts par la méthode Delphi et d’une recension systématique des écrits. La validité de construit (convergente et discriminatoire) et la fidélité (intra-évaluateur et inter-évaluateur) ont été documentées. Vingt-huit participants ont été recrutés selon un échantillonnage stratifié pour l’âge et le sexe. Ils devaient avoir un diagnostic confirmé génétiquement et être âgés entre 18 ans et 59 ans. La validité convergente a été documentée avec des outils évaluant les aptitudes motrices des membres supérieurs (9HPT, PPT, TDNS), la gravité de l’ataxie (SARA), la mobilité (6MWT, 10mWT, échelle de Berg), le fonctionnement dans les activités quotidiennes (Index de Barthel), la participation sociale (MHAVIE) et la qualité de vie (SF-12v2). La validité discriminante a été documentée selon le sexe, le groupe d’âge et le stade de la maladie. La section cérébelleuse a été appliquée à trois reprises par deux physiothérapeutes à deux semaines d’intervalle pour évaluer la fidélité intra et inter-évaluateurs. Résultats : La section cérébelleuse comporte 6 items d’évaluation liés aux fonctions motrices du cervelet. Le sous total de la section cérébelleuse est fortement corrélé avec la majorité des outils d’évaluation (r ≥ 0,69, p = 0,00), à l’exception du SF-12v2 (r ≤ 0,36, p ≥ 0,06). Une différence significative (p < 0,00) a été démontrée entre chaque groupe d’âge pour la majorité des items et le sous-total de la section cérébelleuse de l’échelle. Le résultat de chaque item et le sous-total de la section cérébelleuse augmentent significativement avec le stade de la maladie (p < 0,00). La fidélité intra et inter-évaluateurs correspond à un accord fort (κ ≥ 0,69) pour la majorité des items et le sous-total. Conclusion : Ce projet a permis de développer la section cérébelleuse de l’échelle de gravité DSI-ARSACS avec de bonnes qualités psychométriques (validité et fidélité). L’échelle pourra être utilisée dans le processus de catégorisation et d’évaluation des participants pour de futurs essais thérapeutiques. / Abstract : Introduction: Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) is a rare hereditary neuromuscular disease that mainly affects the spinocerebellar tract. It is characterized by a triad of signs and symptoms, including ataxia and dysarthria (cerebellum impairment), spasticity in the lower limbs (pyramidal impairment) and a distal weakness leading to prehension difficulties (neuropathic impairment). Recent research advances suggest that clinical trials may soon become possible. In this context, it is necessary to develop a disease severity index in order to select patients and document natural history of disease. Objective: The project aimed to develop the items of the cerebellar section of the Disease Severity Index for Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay DSI-ARSACS and document their metrological properties. Method: The cerebellar section was developed using the Streiner and Norman (2008) model, which involves three stages: planning, construction and validation. The planning and construction stages were conducted by carrying out a literature review, obtaining expert opinions and completing a Delphi process. Construct validity (convergent and discriminant) and reliability (intra- and inter-raters) were documented. Twenty-eight participants between the ages of 18 and 59 were recruited using a stratified sampling method based on age and gender. All of them had a genetically confirmed diagnosis of ARSACS. Convergent validity was documented with measurements of upper limbs motor abilities (9HPT, PPT, TDNS), ataxia severity (SARA), mobility (6MWT, 10mWT, Berg scale), functional status in activities of daily living (Barthel index), social participation (MHAVIE) and quality of life (SF-12v2). Discriminant validity was documented according to gender, age group and disease stage. The cerebellar section was administered three times, two weeks apart, by two physiotherapists to assess intra- and inter-rater reliability. Results: The cerebellar section includes 6 assessment items linked to cerebellum motor functions. The cerebellar section subscore was strongly correlated with the majority of assessment tools (r ≥ 0.69, p = 0.00), excluding SF 12v2 (r ≤ 0,36, p ≥ 0,06). A significant difference (p < 0.00) was observed between each age group for most items and the subscore of the cerebellar section. Results on each item and the subscore significantly increase with disease stage (p < 0.00). Intra- and inter-rater reliability reflects a strong level of agreement (κ ≥ 0.69) on the majority of items and the subscore. Conclusion: The cerebellar section of the DSI-ARSACS shows good psychometric properties (validity and reliability). The index can be used to categorize and assess future participants in clinical trials.

Knowledge management (KM) has been cited as a strategic asset and a source of competitive advantage for organisations. While the issues of KM have been widely discussed by many researchers, there is a paucity of studies pertaining to the role of KM in enhancing organisational performance, especially in the banking sector. The focus of this research was to investigate the role of KM in enhancing organisational performance in selected banks of South Africa. The objective was to find out how knowledge was identified, captured, organised and retained in order to enhance performance of the banks. There is uncertainty about whether the use of KM could partly solve the banks‟ approaches to improving their quality of service to their communities in the modern information environment. Though KM has been implemented in commercial and business environments towards operational advantages and financial gains, KM survival principles and tools might help South African banks improve performance and fulfil their mandate. Knowledge, when properly managed, can significantly enhance an organisation‟s performance. The research design that was used in this study was an embedded case study design. Quantitative data were collected from a sample of middle level managers with the aid of a survey whilst interviews and document analysis were used to collect qualitative data. The findings of this study indicated that KM concepts were not universally understood at selected banks. The findings showed that collaboration between banks and the communities in creating a meaningful and relevant knowledge environment was essential for the survival of organisations. The banking industry practices were not deliberately based on KM but the study established that they were amenable to KM practices. The recommendation was to perform a knowledge inventory which could help develop appropriate institution-wide policies and practices for proper and well-organised methods of integrating work processes, collaborating and sharing (including the efficient use of knowledge technology platforms), and developing an enabling institutional culture. / Psychology / Ph. Therapist identity formation is an important part of the development of the therapist training programme. It results in numerous changes for the therapist and is often an emotive developmental stage. The therapist develops his identity by doing therapy, but before he is able to do that, he needs to understand what he sees the role of therapy to be, as well as developing his own therapeutic skills. Fortunately there are personality traits which enhance this identity formation process. It is by his own actions and involvement that the therapist accomplishes this multifaceted process. The effects of this identity formation are varied and require the therapist to undergo introspection on a number of issues which affect his own life-world. Exploring the relational qualities of older people in a residential care facility / Erika du Plessis

The social environment has been recognised as one of the key aspects in determining the quality of life throughout the human lifespan. Human behaviour, thoughts, feelings and attitudes are socially constructed and can only be understood when viewed from the perspective of social interaction. Older individuals, who live in residential facilities experience a diminished quality of life due to factors such as loss of independence, reduced social networks, functional dependence, and contextual changes. Depression, loneliness and social isolation are an integral part of these individuals’ lives. People develop specific styles of relating, also referred to as interpersonal styles. The systems theory is used to explain the circular processes of the interaction between people. In particular the Self-Interactional Group Theory (SIGT) is proposed as theoretical framework to explore the relational qualities of older people in a residential care facility. SIGT views the interaction between people on three levels, namely the intra-personal level, the interpersonal level and the group level, which operate interdependently in the interaction between people. The interpersonal level of analysis consists of the definition of the relationship, relational qualities, motivation to engage with people to address needs and needs satisfaction as well as the circular processes of which the interaction consists of. The interactions between people always take place in an interpersonal context, embedded in broader environments. A qualitative and exploratory research design was selected to explore the relational qualities in interactions between older individuals living in a residential care facility. This study is based on data collected during a primary research study at a residential care facility for older individuals in 2013. The purpose of study was to explore the quality of life of older individuals residing in a residential care facility in Gauteng, South Africa. The data-gathering process in the primary research study involved the Mmogo-Method, a visual projective data-gathering method, the World Café method and person-centred interviews to gain insight into the participants’ life experiences at the residential care facility. For the purpose of this research, only the person-centred interviews were used for the secondary analysis of the data. Twelve purposely-selected individuals (aged 80 to 95; 3 men and 9 women) from the residential care facility participated voluntarily in the person-centered interviews, which were audio recorded. The collected data were transcribed verbatim and subjected to two different methods of analyses. First, data were analysed thematically by adopting an inductive approach. The themes identified in this first phase were next subjected to a deductive content analysis. The themes were categorised according to the relational variables in accordance with the Interactional Pattern Analysis (IPA), thereby contributing to the trustworthiness of the findings. The findings revealed that the interactions between older individuals take place in a broader environment that advocate the active participation of people. Active participation takes place both in and outside the facility and older people reported that this contributed to their quality of life. The relational qualities that could be described as enhancing interpersonal connectivity and satisfying older people’s needs for confirmation were identified as empathy, unconditional acceptance of others, confirmation and interpersonal flexibility. This research, however, highlighted relational qualities that restrained quality of life of older people, namely confusing self-presentation, ineffective expression on needs and withdrawal due to physical immobility. Needs were expressed in a very unspecific, blaming or manipulative manner, and consequently needs were not satisfied, but provoked, instead, feelings of frustration, pain and guilt. This research highlighted the predicament that older people find themselves in. Their decreased physical abilities and limited emotional repertoire to move towards others and the environment also limit their needs satisfaction. The presenting problem of social isolation can be explained by the combination of limited physical mobility and relational qualities that restrain quality of life for older people. This research study thus holds important implications for relationship-focused approaches in residential facilities for older individuals in order to empower and enable them to enhance their quality of life. Nature des perceptions entourant les qualités écologiques des objets à caractère artisanal

Depuis quelques temps, on note que les objets d’apparence artisanale symbolisent souvent des qualités écologiques telles que des matériaux naturels et une fabrication éthique. Les visées de l’étude ont été d’explorer les perceptions à l’égard des objets à caractère artisanal et cela, en vue de reconnaître quelles qualités écologiques sont attribuées à ces derniers, tout en tentant de comprendre les raisons qui se cachent derrière ces associations. Une étude auprès d’usagers a permis d’explorer l’ensemble des qualités pouvant être liées à ce type d’objet, en considérant plus précisément le rapport entre les qualités écologiques leur étant accordées et leur durée de vie projetée. Pour ce faire, au cours d’entretiens individuels, des thèmes comme l’appréciation à long terme, la signification et la considération de la diversité culturelle ont été examinés. Les résultats montrent entre autres que les objets à caractère artisanal sont caractérisés comme étant composés de matériaux naturels et sains pour la santé des usagers. Leur usure est reconnue comme éveillant les représentations quant à leur « histoire », alors que leur originalité leur confère une « âme ». Enfin, car ils sont considérés comme ayant été fabriqués par des créateurs autonomes, ces objets sont associés à des conditions de travail éthiques et sont perçus comme étant capables de faire tourner l’économie locale. Les renseignements recueillis peuvent informer les théories et la pratique en design industriel quant à la disposition des objets à caractère artisanal à être appréciés par les usagers, de leur durée de vie projetée et du désir de les entretenir et de les léguer. Ce projet constitue un premier répertoire des perceptions entourant ce type d’objet, un champ de recherche encore très peu documenté, malgré qu’il s’inscrive à l’intérieur d’un contexte environnemental et social bien actuel. Les résultats obtenus contribuent à leur façon à la perspective d’une conception, d’une fabrication et d’une consommation davantage viables. / In these days, artisanal-looking objects often symbolize ecological qualities such as natural materials and ethical production. The aims of the study were to explore perceptions towards artisanal looking objects and that, in order to recognize what ecological qualities are attributed to them, while trying to understand the reasons behind these associations. A study of users allowed to explore all the qualities that can be associated with this type of object, considering specifically the relationship between these environmental qualities and their planned lifespan. To do so, topics such as long-term appreciation, meaning and consideration of cultural diversity were examined during individual interviews. Results show that artisanal-looking objects are caracterized as objects being made of materials that are natural and safe for users. As well, their patina stimulates the perception of having a « story », and their originality gives the perception of the object having « soul ». Lastly, because they are considered as being made by independent designers, these objects are associated with ethical working conditions and are perceived as having the capability to drive the local economy. Among other things, the information gathered can inform theory and practice in the field of industrial design on the ability of artisanal-looking objects to be appreciated. Information can also shed light on their planned lifespan in regard to user’s level of emotional attachment, and on the desire of users to preserve and to bestow them upon future generations. This project stands as a first inventory of perceptions pertaining to this type of object, a field of research not yet well documented although it is in line with the current environmental and social context. The obtained results, therefore, contribute to the ongoing project of a more sustainable design, production and consumption.

Avhandlingen behandlar införande av varsin dator till elever och lärare, här kallat en-till-en. Syftet är att bidra med kunskap om hur en-till-en påverkar lärande. Särskilt fokus ligger på kunskapsproduktionens karaktär och kvalitet och på förhållanden i den svenska skolan. En ytterligare ambition är att väcka reflektioner kring och bilda kunskap om hur en-till-en, som en produkt av kunskapssamhället, påverkar såväl kunskapssynen som kunskapsbildningens kvalitet och villkor. Därtill är också ambitionen också att, mot bakgrund av kunskapssamhällets särskilda villkor, bidra till nya insikter kring kunskapsbegreppets utvecklingsmöjligheter i relation till en-till-en.Utgångspunkten tas i kunskapssamhället och villkoren för kunskapsproduktion och i hur Sverige har valt att fokusera på behovet av att ge eleverna digital kompetens. Den teoretiska ansatsen ligger i fenomenologi som ontologiskt ställningstagande och i fenomenografi gällande perspektiv på lärande. Avhandlingen bygger på fyra studier: en narrativ forskningsöversikt med fokus på vad forskning berättar om elever respektive lärare i en-till-en projekt. Vidare ingår en teoretisk artikel med fokus på att utveckla en alternativ förståelse för villkoren för kunskapsbildning på den sociala webben med utgångspunkt från Martin Heideggers fenomenologi. En intervjustudie kring elevers upplevelser av sitt lärande i en-till en ingår också samt en fenomenografisk analys av inlämnade kunskapsuppgifter med fokus på kritiska dimensioner och kunskapsdjup. Resultaten diskuterar huruvida det starka färdighetsfokus som uppstår vid kunskapsbildning i en-till-en är samstämmigt med den performativa kunskap som i kunskapssamhället antas vara av vikt och hur det påverkar kvalitet och karaktär på bildad kunskap. Avhandlingen diskuterar också hur en-till-en påverkar elevers sätt att uppleva sitt lärande i en situation som präglas av flexibilitet och ständigt nya förutsättningar för lärande. Slutligen diskuteras också ett möjligt sätt att utveckla kunskapsbegreppet mot bakgrund av de resultat som framträtt i avhandlingens fyra studier genom att formulera begreppet 'stretchad kunskap'.
