Revelation's hymns : commentary on the cosmic conflict

Topic This study examines the hymnic pericopes found at Revelation 4.8-11; 5.9-14; 7.10- 12; 11.15-18; 12.10-12; 15.3,4 and 19.1-8 in light of the cosmic conflict theme. It considers that this theme is a major contributor to the development of Revelation’s plot, and thus the hymnic sections are informed by, and inform the understanding of the controversy. Purpose Recognizing that the majority of critical studies give interpretative primacy to the social and political realities that existed in the Roman Empire at the time of Revelation’s composition, there is need for an examination of the storyline from the perspective of issues that are clearly of narratival importance. This study argues that the cosmic conflict is at the center of the book’s concerns, and attempts to determine the function of the hymns in relation to the ongoing controversy. Previous examinations of the hymnic sections have either considered them to be a response and/or parody to Roman liturgy, examples of God’s unquestioned sovereignty, or expressions of thematic overtones found throughout the book. While all these approaches make a contribution to a greater understanding of the hymns, the relation of the hymns to the ever-present conflict theme has not been explored. This study allows the hymnic sections to engage with the larger narrative issue as to who is truly the rightful sovereign of the universe. Conclusion This study found that a close examination of the text confirms that the cosmic conflict is the major motif in the narrative, and that it does not simply serve as a metaphor for political realities. It also concluded that the temple/throne room imagery found throughout the storyline, should have a controlling influence upon interpretation. This setting provides the backdrop for understanding the origins and issues of the controversy. Another conclusion of the study is that the only way for the controversy to be resolved is for God to reveal Himself in such a manner that the truth about Him is manifest. Finally, it was seen that the hymns do provide commentary on the conflict, by acclaiming God’s goodness and right to rule, despite the undertones of Satan’s accusations. / New Testament / D. Th. Summaries in German and English / Die vorliegende Studie setzt sich mit der militärischen Metaphorik im Corpus Paulinum im Blick auf deren Vorkommen und Bedeutung auseinander. Es zeigt sich, dass sich die militärische Rede und deren Anwendungsbereich im Corpus Paulinum über alle dreizehn Briefe hinweg, die der Reihe nach ihrer wahrscheinlichen chronologischen Abfassungsfolge entsprechend analysiert werden, zu entwickeln scheint: dienen militärische Motive anfangs noch vorwiegend als Vergleichsmomente, so werden sie im weiteren Verlauf der Briefchronologie zunehmend identifizierend eingesetzt. Thematisch verwendet Paulus militärische Redeweise insbesondere zur Schaffung und Wahrung von Einheit in der Gemeinde auf Grund gemeinsamer Identität sowie um sich und die Gemeinde als »Mithineingenommene« in den transzendenten, eschatologischen Kampf gegen Satan zu verstehen und praktisch zu verorten bzw. anzuleiten. Das Evangelium selbst ist umkämpft, was daher auch die Missionstätigkeit des Paulus bzw. der Gemeinde als eine geistlich-militärische Mission verstehen lässt. Als »echte Metaphern« können die militärischen Metaphern bei Paulus weder verlustfrei ersetzt noch aufgelöst werden. / The study deals with military metaphors in the Corpus Paulinum with regard to their occurrence and significance. It turns out that the military speech and its scope of application in the Corpus Paulinum seems to evolve across all thirteen letters, which are analyzed in sequence according to their probable chronological order: if military motifs serve as comparative moments at first, they are increasingly used identically in the further course of the letter chronology. The use of military speeches in particular serves the purpose of creating and maintaining unity in the community on the basis of a common identity, and in order to understand and guide the community in a transcendent, eschatological struggle against Satan. The Gospel itself is contested, which also explains the missionary activity of Paul as a spiritual-military mission. The purpose of investigation was to examine whether Satan´s democracy was an adaptation of The Master and Margarita. As a theoretical frame was used adaptation theory by Laera, Hutcheon and Babbage, Loman´s model for theatre performance analysis and the praxis of immersive theatre by Punchdrunk. The investigation was conducted as a comparative analysis of written and videotaped documentation and interviews of stage managers and actors. The results show that Satan´s democracy can be regarded as an intermedial transformation by temporal adaptation of The Master and Margarita to contemporary Swedish environment. A creative reinterpretation of the message about the individual´s impotence while facing superior political power is observed in Satan´s democracy. The geography and environment were reinterpreted by reshaping of space in a huge building that served entirely as stage and by use of art and music. Some characters were kept, some were recreated, some were created without distinct model in The Master and Margarita. Satan´s democracy was conducted as a collective theatre and art process of creation in distinct steps by almost 600 people during 2015- spring 2016. The production team applied and creatively developed immersive theatre form.

The purpose of this paper is to present an opening to argue for a transtheoretical and - activist fellowship with Satan and the values connected to hir. A transactivist fellows-hip with Satan builds on two primary points of contact. It is on one hand the opportu-nity to take advantage of the non-conformist, non-normative and polemical signifi-cance Satan has been attributed, especially in the history of literature, but also in the history of religion. And on the other hand this study also dwells upon how Satan as a figure has served as an expression of evilness, hatred, darkness and suffering amongst people. The questions i ask, is if there is a course that allows me to theorize for a stra-tegic collaboration between the transactivist struggle and the ideas that is connected to the satanfigure in John Miltons Paradise Lost. I also ask if there is a transtheoretical-and activist approach where Satan can function as an ally within the transactivist re-sistance. The purpose of this paper also carries on a confrontation with the notion of ”tone-policing", and love and tenderness as the only sanctioned (and praised) incenti-ves for political struggle. In this thesis I make a link between the logic that connects to Satan as an ideological basis and a non-conformist (militant), seperatist, anti-capi-talist and queer attitude in transactivist struggle. With the help of Susan Stryker's the-ory of the monsteridentity I will experiment with extracts from John Milton's Paradise Lost, where the Satan figure and the transactivist position builds on a fellowship as my analysis proceeds. To do this i use a queer-deleuzian tool as a method that focuses on textual framings within the idea of spatial relations, meaning how the actual text can and should correspond with discourses outside its territorial space. This allow me to di-sengage Satan from its original amplitude, and instead of interpreting how Satan handles hirself in Paradise Lost, i will liberate Satan from this narrative and create a relation between hir and my thesis. In this way I create an occasion, through a theore-tical approach to trans-subjectivity as comparable to the perception of the monster as a non-normative figure, to bring the transgendered monster together with the satanic monster. The ”what” that will subsequently crystallize during the analysis have the intention to tell the story about the ways in which the non-confirmative transactivist have in common with Satan. After doing this i will conclude my thesis with a discus-sion that reflects on how this fellowship has evolved in relation to the proposed politi-cal and emotional connections between the non-confomative transactivist and Satan.

Investigating the prevalence of Satanism in Zambia with particular reference to the Kabwe district

This study examined the alleged prevalence of Satanism in Zambia, with a particular reference to the Kabwe District during the period 2010-2013. The overall objective was to ascertain the claims and speculations on the alleged prevalence of Satanism in the district of Kabwe. The claims about the alleged prevalence of Satanism and the satanic scare were found by this study to be a reality in Kabwe, with eighty-eight per cent (88%) of the respondents acknowledging the alleged prevalence of the phenomenon. People’s knowledge of Satanism was mainly through rumours, messages from Churches and the electronic media. Studies on rumours (by Stephen Ellis, Gerrie Ter Haar and Jeffrey Victor) have shown that rumours can be investigated in the search for facts, especially rumours that offer plausible explanations for people’s shared anxieties. The above mentioned scholars argue that with efforts at corroboration, such as by interviewing key informants, the researcher can seek credibility on prevailing rumours by verifying or dismissing mere rumours from true stories. The assertions from scholars above justified the use of rumours as a methodological tool in this study. From sources of information the study relied on, claims about the alleged prevalence of Satanism in the district were investigated. The study refuted the satanic claims in a number of cases that were analysed, because they were mostly based on ‘pious legends’ hence lacked objective evidence. From the few incidents that suggested the prevalence of Satanism, there were still two basic problems faced in assessing their credibility: the first being the difficulty in determining the reliability of the confessions from informants who in this case either claimed they were ex-Satanists or served on behalf of Satanists. The second problem consisted in what seemed to be the inconsistency in the explanations of motives behind human killings found in the ritual murders. Some explanations did not suggest satanic motives. One example of refuted claims concerned the two locations within Kabwe district which were highly rumoured to be sites for Satanists, which were found by this study to be Freemasonry Lodges, contrary to what was rumoured.From the findings of this study, it was believed that people joined Satanism either because of the greedy for riches or to avoid poverty. It was also believed that other peoples joined Satanism unconsciously through luring methods used by Satanists. The study also found the satanic scare to have effects on the lives of people in the district. For example, it caused some people to become more committed Christians in their defence against the alleged satanic forces. Djävulens lakejer : En komparativ studie av djävulsgestaltningen i Narniaböckerna

Det övergripande syftet i denna uppsats är att undersöka vad som tyder på att C.S. Lewis har influerats av den bibliska Djävulen i hans skildrande av två ondskefulla gestalter i Narnia. Dessa två karaktärer är den vita häxan och den vita häxan. I studien har jag valt att göra en komparativ undersökning av vilka kopplingar och likheter som finns mellan den bibliska djävulen och Lewis framställningar av den gröna respektive den vita häxan. Jämförandet bygger på en intertextuell, religiös grund med en hermeneutisk utgångspunkt där Bibeln och Holms djävulssymboler har fungerat som jämförelseunderlag. Fokus i denna granskning har legat på vilka samband skildringarna av Djävulen och häxorna förmedlar i form av symboler, handlingar och händelser. Sammanfattningsvis går att säga att parallellerna och likheterna är många och konkreta men att dessa influenser tar sig uttryck på olika sätt hos den gröna häxan respektive den vita häxan. Det framgår att den gröna häxan har fler kopplingar till djävulen genom symboler medan den vita häxan skildras mer sparsamt med symboliska uttryck. Den vita häxan tilldelas dock fler paralleller och samband med djävulen i form av handlingar och händelser. Samtidigt blir det tydligt att Lewis förmedlar kristna strukturer till kommande generationer genom sina karaktärer och berättelser om landet Narnia. Det bibliska jämförandet visar i detta fall på hur människor i en social konstruktion även införlivar nya medlemmar i kulturella inlärningssystem genom litteratur.

A critical analysis of Byang Kato’s demonology and its theological relevance for an evangelical demonology

What composes an Evangelical demonology? This dissertation aims to provide a fresh Evangelical demonology, reflecting and systematizing the biblical material on the demonic. To begin the process, Byang Kato’s background and demonology is examined, since Kato himself has a unique relationship to demonic practices by virtue of his upbringing. His demonological efforts are headlined by a booklet on the spirits, and throughout the rest of Kato’s theological output, Satan and his wicked comrades are frequently mentioned. Overall, Kato’s work presents timely contributions for our demonological goals, especially considering the multicultural context. In an increasingly intermingled world, with many backgrounds being represented in multicultural Christian communities, Kato’s demonology is a superior model. Human perceptions concerning the demonic are often inseparable from prevailing cultural attitudes, and the temptation to exalt one’s own culture must be avoided, especially due to the new norm of multicultural churches, para-church organizations, and seminaries. Kato’s demonology gravitates to the biblical material, and thus it delivers both challenges and affirmations to every party. Furthermore, Kato’s writings on the demonic are inherently linked to soteriology. After discerning some of the major themes of Kato’s soteriology, his exclusivism (and how it relates to demonology) is specifically discussed. Since Kato views the world outside of Christ as the dominion of Satan and the demonic, he advocates that one must turn to Christ for redemption. Then an Evangelical demonology itself is constructed. After highlighting particular contributions from Kato, criteria are outlined for the project before launching into the primary content. Demonic activity throughout the Bible is surveyed, and the argument is offered that demons do act as malevolent personal beings intent on instigating evil in the created order. Through this study of the demonic, the assertion that “demonology matters” is presented, as the doctrine of the demonic relates to the reliability of the Bible and the quality of our salvation. A biblical, Evangelical demonology also rises to modern challenges, including skepticism and speculation.
