The Rebirth Of Consciousness

Blaszak, Urszula 01 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Human beings encounter cascades of a plethora of experiences, one after another, every single microsecond of our lives. There are many things happening around. The world is full of events and occurrences. As they happen, the mind reacts to every individual input. This is a very exhausting and difficult. Thus, people have developed a process of self-defense against this horrible mishmash of information. Their minds have this amazing capacity of sorting them out and making sense out of them. Humankind's survival depends on that. If one does not sort all this information out, one might not be able to make a simplest decision. As humans process the information, they learn to ignore and forget. They focus on their feelings and emotions. They forget the logic. The oversimplification process begins. Humans create rigid systems of oversimplified formulas. They assign adjectives to things, occurrences, and other people. The number of those adjectives is small. After assigning, those adjectives obscure everything else. A new world is created, stupid, limited, lazy, and in the end making humans very easy to control. What starts as a basic survival process ends up as a tool one can use to destroy the owners of the mind. In the end, the birth of consciousness leads to its death. My work fights this process. It aims to put a person back into that state of shock created by a mishmash of information and thus create the rebirth of consciousness.

A modern Antimodern: Yves Bonnefoy’s critique of 20th-century art

Olivennes, Benjamin January 2024 (has links)
In this dissertation, I argue that Yves Bonnefoy, a major 20th-century French poet and a heir to French poetic modernity, pursued the dialogue between poetry and painting that has been central to French poetry, and in doing so praised some specific artists in the 20th century in a coherent manner, outlining what I call a counter-history of 20th century art. This counter-history, I argue, reveals his fundamental opposition to modern art. What emerges from the study of his prose writings on 20th-century art is the fact that Bonnefoy continued modernity yet critiqued it. In doing so he was influenced philosophically by Heidegger and poetically by Baudelaire, and also marked by his break with Surrealism and Breton. This leads me to conclude that Bonnefoy was a sort of "antimodern"; and that he laid out the foundations of an "antimodern" vision of 20th-century art. My research reveals a coherent family of artists emerging from Bonnefoy's writings, who saw themselves as part of this alternative art history.

Une spécificité Cobra, les oeuvres collectives: émergence d'une pratique et exemplarité de Christian Dotremont / One of the Cobra's specificity, collective works: emergence of Christian Dotremont's practice and exemplary.

Andrieu, Mélanie 30 September 2011 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the Cobra movement through one of its characteristic components: the collective works. First of all it's about understanding the movement, its origins (three countries), its influences and its purpose of a free art, open, experimental, involvement with life. In a social after-war context, often politicized, Cobra defends collective action, notably defined in concepts of anti-specialism and inter-specialism. We should therefore underline the origins of this practice and undestand different aspects that it shows, in particular through publications, exhibitions or shared creations. The poet Christian Dotremont, leader and soul of Cobra, promotes cooperative work by collaboration and contributes to its development by stimulating artistic meetings. He is the purveyor and permanent "agitator" of this concept. The words-paintings that he creates with other artists, take part of his major thinking about writing and painting. This link interpellates a few Belgian artists like Pierre Alechinsky, but it fascinates Christian Dotremont who keeps experimenting on it, in order to reach what he calls the logograms, a remarkable fusion of painting and poetry, and a culmination of a life-time of research.
This work is structured in three parts. The first one draws a study of the artistic and social context of the years preceding Cobra and the setting up of the group. The second one talks about years of intense "official" activity of the group serving collective way of work. Finally, the third one offers to follow the post-Cobra evolution of collective works and researches about writing and painting.

Socialistický realismus a tzv. totální realismus: charakteristika básnické poetiky a pokus o komparaci / Socialist realism and so called total realism: main characteristics of poetics, similarities and differences

Sieberová, Jana January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis mainly deals with the relationships between the poetic manifestations of socialist realism and so called total realism in the early fifties. The first part focuses on general issues; within it I try to describe characteristic features of both poetics, for total realism it is done mostly in the background of comparison with like-minded concepts (Hrabal's poems from the fifties, the works of former members of Group 42). In other chapters of the text I am thinking about a total realism from two aspects: first, as an alternative form of realism, which defines itself against the official art, as well as a program that is dependent on the official art to some extent by paraphrasing or using some of its means and resources.

Die Erfindung der Moderne: Das Manifest Refus global und die identitätsstiftende Rezeption von Surrealismus und Automatismus in Québec

Grzonka, Sabine Alice 14 March 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The manifesto of the Quebecer art movement Automatism, the Refus global (Montreal, 1948), is today one of the best known socio-political writings of Quebec. It is considered to have been the beginning of Quebec's cultural modernity and an early sign of its political modernity. In the early 1940's the manifesto's author Paul-Émile Borduas (1905-1960) had already been praised for his art later named "Automatism". It was seen by the automatists as the evolution of Surrealism (like Abstract Expressionism). Many art critics called this the first Canadian painting that followed the modern aesthetics of the time. According to the surrealist program the automatists aspired to create a new Quebec society. In 1948, the fact that their manifesto differed greatly from the conservative political and social ideas of Maurice Duplessis (Prime Minister of Quebec from 1936 to 1939 and from 1944 to 1959) made Borduas and the manifesto famous. It was considered to be an attack against the traditionalistic institutions because it not only required pictorial but also general liberty. Maurice Duplessis' death in 1959 was the beginning of the Quiet Revolution. During this eventful time the Quebecois began officially to identify with the modern state they were creating. The end of the old regime was also the beginning of a new Quebec nationalism which is important for the new reception of Automatism. The intellectuals discovered the Refus global and saw in Borduas their spiritual father in their claim for an original Quebec culture and a greater political autonomy. In the former condemnation of the manifesto they found the proof that the old political system in Quebec prevented modernity. This thesis traces the reception of Surrealism, Automatism and the Refus global in Quebec throughout the period from the 1940's to the turn of the century. It shows how modern (cultural and national) identity has been established, which groups have been interested in its construction and how the commemoration of the manifesto still helps today to support the nationalist project in Quebec.

The nature of the marvelous in René Depestre’s Hadriana dans tous mes rêves

Belleroche, Jean Élie, 1968- 26 July 2011 (has links)
My goal is to study the nature of the Marvelous in René Depestre's Hadriana dans tous mes rêves. I want to demonstrate that René Depestre, in his novel, combines a number of surrealist or neo-surrealist premises that have influenced him as a Haitian writer. This goes beyond differences that can be discerned between the "Surrealist marvelous" endorsed by André Breton and the surrealists, and Alejo Capentier's "marvelous real"later proposed by Jacques Stephen Alexis as "marvelous realism" Depestre adapts Haitian natives' perceptions deep-rooted in their historical and social, cultural and religious past and ever-existing political and economical struggle. Taking into account both the surrealist perspective and the Haitian context, I shall address the complexity of the concept of the Marvelous and discuss Depestre's use of "zombification"as a form of metamorphosis, which preserves the mystical nature of Vodou as a religion that syncretizes the Roman Catholic ritual of exorcism of the Christian West and the animist and magical practices inherited from Africa. Scholars have explored the Marvelous and marvelous realism in Depestre's works as a whole, but not in Hadriana dans tous mes rêves specifically. The exclusive nature of this study will show that Depestre draws from Haiti's complex cultural ethos as well as from surrealism'es key principles, to create a hybrid Marvelous typical of Haiti and Depestre'es aesthetic as a writer. / text

Surréalisme africain et surréalisme français : influences, similitudes et différences / African surrealism and french surrealism : influences, similarities and differences

Renouf, Magali 19 June 2013 (has links)
African Surrealism requires the question from the influence of French surrealism. Terminology implies, indeed, a link between African writing and the French movement. This link is established by both critics and the dialogues between the two worlds. Senghor encouraged to consider independent part of this surrealism evoking a black negro-african surrealism. We disclaim then behind apparent similarities, differences which reveal a surrealism in the service of understanding the world purely African. African surrealism is an expression of the traditional African perception whose shape is similar to that introduced by the Parisian movement without necessarily had influence.
