What a Drag!: Ethnography, Performance and Female Impersonation by Fernando Antonio de Paula Passos examines the performative presence of cross-dressed men in Salvador’s public scenes: cross-dressing as the opportunity for the deconstruction of gender polarities. It consists of an approach that blends self-reflexive ethnography with issues of female impersonation and cross-dressing in order to study the multiplicity of their performances, their re-signification, their relatively recent arrival in the context of revisionist perspectives and subject matters in the academic field of the performing arts in Brazil. Incorporating concepts of auto-ethnography and theoretical transvestism, it brings together writing and performance in what is now known as performative writing, as it struggles to uncover what the “being” of performance is all about. In dealing with the ontology of performance as representation without reproduction, it is particularly focused on issues of disappearance. It is also aware that writing about the undocumentable event of the performance alters that same event. It also deals with: traces of disappearance, the presence of the body in performance, cross-dressing, camp, alterity, feminine choreography, Global Queerscapes, drag epistemology, nation, surrealism, pastoral, allegory, political resistance and Carmen Miranda, as the epitome of inter/national camp.

In Christian allegoric texts the Pilgrim traditionally symbolizes the journey of mankind to heaven. From the second half of the 19th century on, poets, travelers, and vagabonds pursued the quest of an afterlife from within city walls. This dissertation examines the different representations of modern wandering via an in-depth analysis of the theme as encountered in French and Czech literature and arts from the early 19th century to the 1940's. It reveals, in chronological order, the different artistic approaches to modernity. By bringing out the various patterns that emerge from the texts, while taking into account the historical and social contexts in which they were created, this work adds to existing knowledge on the cultural similarities between France and Bohemia. It also examines the different literary genres which originate from mankind’s need to walk and write the world.

Grzonka, Sabine Alice 06 September 2002 (has links)
The manifesto of the Quebecer art movement Automatism, the Refus global (Montreal, 1948), is today one of the best known socio-political writings of Quebec. It is considered to have been the beginning of Quebec's cultural modernity and an early sign of its political modernity. In the early 1940's the manifesto's author Paul-Émile Borduas (1905-1960) had already been praised for his art later named "Automatism". It was seen by the automatists as the evolution of Surrealism (like Abstract Expressionism). Many art critics called this the first Canadian painting that followed the modern aesthetics of the time. According to the surrealist program the automatists aspired to create a new Quebec society. In 1948, the fact that their manifesto differed greatly from the conservative political and social ideas of Maurice Duplessis (Prime Minister of Quebec from 1936 to 1939 and from 1944 to 1959) made Borduas and the manifesto famous. It was considered to be an attack against the traditionalistic institutions because it not only required pictorial but also general liberty. Maurice Duplessis' death in 1959 was the beginning of the Quiet Revolution. During this eventful time the Quebecois began officially to identify with the modern state they were creating. The end of the old regime was also the beginning of a new Quebec nationalism which is important for the new reception of Automatism. The intellectuals discovered the Refus global and saw in Borduas their spiritual father in their claim for an original Quebec culture and a greater political autonomy. In the former condemnation of the manifesto they found the proof that the old political system in Quebec prevented modernity. This thesis traces the reception of Surrealism, Automatism and the Refus global in Quebec throughout the period from the 1940's to the turn of the century. It shows how modern (cultural and national) identity has been established, which groups have been interested in its construction and how the commemoration of the manifesto still helps today to support the nationalist project in Quebec.

[pt] O CINEMA MAL-DITO DE PETER TSCHERKASSKY: HANTOLOGIA E A FORMA INFORME / [en] PETER TSCHERKASSKY S CURSED CINEMA: HAUNTOLOGY AND FORMLESS

BARBARA BERGAMASCHI NOVAES 03 October 2022 (has links)
[en] At the intersection between the museum and the movie theater, a number of contemporary artists have been investigating the corporeality of analog images. In this new scene of the poetics of obsolescence, within the specific field of contemporary found footage avant-garde cinema, our object of study, the Austrian Peter Tscherkassky (1958-) occupies a prominent place. The thesis is written at the central injunction of three lines: i - The biography and critical fortune of the director; ii- the dialogue with a classical historiography and film theory; and iiithe ad hoc critical film analysis of his filmography. In an inflection with Georges Bataille s excessive anti-axiomatic and formless thought and, as well, into Walter Benjamin s idea of constellation, we seek to create a series of elective affinities that compose a network of authors that are fundamental to the thesis, namely: George Didi -Huberman, Mark Fisher, Rosalind Krauss, Jacques Derrida, Thomas Elseasser, Roland Barthes, among others. From a genealogical and extemporaneous re-elaboration of the filmic ruin, he operates a transgression of the mimesis and the conform similarity of the images, bringing to light the cursed part of cinematographic historiography. Instead of a classic indexical ontology, Tscherakassky takes us into the field of hauntology, in other words, the structural condition of cinema as specters. His work would be a genealogical attempt of re-enchantment with images of cinema that are today appeased by the control of narrative teleology and the representative regime. We conclude that the filmmaker s extemporaneous and anachronistic cinema are strong responses and symptoms of problematics of the contemporary cinema scene.

Situace surrealistického subjektu / Situation of the Surrealist Subject

Svěrák, Šimon January 2013 (has links)
Univerzita Karlova v Praze Filosofická fakulta katedra estetiky Diploma thesis Šimon Svěrák Situation of the Surrealist Subject (abstract) 2012 thesis supervisor: prof. PhDr. Vlastimil Zuska, CSc. Abstract This thesis focuses on the situation of a substantial subject in the historical development of the surrealist experience and confronts it with our original postmodern interpretation of thoughts of early Marx. The surrealist consciousness is based on a dialectical opposition between rational and irrational elements of cognitive processes. André Breton apprehends this dialectics under the perspective of love life and relates it to values of love, freedom and poetry. Nevertheless, this conception changes in the immanent development of the surrealist consciousness from Breton over the work and thoughts Salvador Dalí and Mikuláš Medek to Vratislav Effenberger. Effenberger removes positive values from surrealism and puts emphasis on the critical functions of the irrational. On the psychological field, all these ideas are based on the conception of the unconscious which means there is the substantial approach in them. Our critical interpretation of Marx shows, that the surrealist concept of subject is in the contradiction with its substantial determination. The subject has to be perceived as the essential...

Hoyos, Camilo 23 March 2010 (has links)
The purpose of our investigation is to analyze the image of Paris forged in four Surrealist texts published between 1926-1928 in order to understand the Surrealist elements that allowed Julio Cortázar to forge his own image of the city in the novel Rayuela. Our analytical criteria are the importance of the regard and the promenade in the construction of the city as an interior and personal space. To understand the importance of the Surrealist production, it was necessary to visit the origins of Paris as a literary text in the late eitheenth century, the importance of the tradition noctámbule in the XIXth century, the incidences of Baudelaire's work regarding the modern Paris and the change of century that allowed the Surrealist movement to understand the city as an interior and psychic space. Through the establishment of certain criteria and images, we analyzed Paris in Cortázar's novel Rayuela as a Surrealist product, even if Cortázar himself never felt as as a Surrealist writer.

Pictopoésie and ontophonie : A study of the continuous variation in the complete works of Gherasim Luca

Clonts, Charlène 07 July 2016 (has links)
The aim of this PHD is to study the process of the continuous variation, as the guiding principle for the complete works of Gherasim Luca. The purpose is to highlight both its plastic and its phonic aspects, how they work together, and also the way pictopoésie and ontophonie help create a perpetual selfgenerated text. Since the works stand at the crossroads of several arts, this analysis underlines the structure of the iconic and textual spaces. One of the axis of research, that focuses on the persona, as it emerges from a protean aesthetics, and on the figurative space proper to language, calls thus intoquestion Deleuze’s theory of “continuous variation”, while showing its internal mechanism and its exceedance. Finally, the phonic, the linguistic and the physical performance, in staging the ontophonie, brings into question the voices and the media as a means, established by the oral poetry and the mediopoetics, granting access to an analysis based on endless repetition and reformulation.

: un printemps du FLE / Literary experiments of creativity and creativity in the teaching of French as a foreign language. : a spring of “FLE”

Thivin, Viviane 14 January 2015 (has links)
To advance that the literary text has always played a part in the evolution of the practices of teaching/training of French as Foreign Language (FFL) is an obviousness. The place granted to it differs of course in time. However, it is at the moment when the handbooks were turning away from these texts that the didacticians, specialists in FFL, made use of the literature to work out new activities. The latter were to revolutionize the way of teaching and learning the matter. Worked out during the years of post-68, these activities modified the role of the teacher as well as the place of the learner in the class. Following the example of the literature which he taught hitherto, the first lost of its influence and turned into a benevolent instructor. As for the second, from then it became active and gained in autonomy. Released from the methods of the past, the two thorough parts with more personal investment were to also find more pleasure in their new roles. The literatures at the origin of this upheaval are known as «creative». Their modes of production rest either on techniques aiming at releasing the authors of the rules wedging their inventiveness or on constraints supporting the production of types based on prerequisites. It goes without saying that, applied to the FFL courses, the two ways of proceeding should lead learners in turn to produce texts known as «creative». The present research relates to the various literary techniques used and the exercises which they generated.
