Inorganic Asian North American Lives: Virtual Dismemberments, Copies and Wellbeing

Wong, Danielle January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation examines Asian North American rearticulations of the inorganic—a quality that has historically been assigned to Asians, rendering them counterfeit, abstract or not-quite-human—in new media, film and literature. By analyzing circulations of Asian North American disassembled body parts, “copies,” and gendered inter/faces, I argue that the excess, failures and ambivalence of Asian North American labour and performance constitute virtual modes of racialization that disrupt neoliberal, postracial temporalities in the Information Age. Asian American studies has held in tension its critiques of the West’s monopoly of liberal humanism in techno-Orientalist narratives (David S. Roh, Betsy Huang and Greta A. Niu) and the oppositional strategies of reappropriating techno-Orientalist tropes. My project does not seek to recuperate the Asian North American subject from the dehumanizing processes of fragmentation, surplus reproduction or abstraction—an impulse described by Rachel C. Lee as returning the “extracted body part” to the racialized “whole” in order to resolve anxieties about subjective “incoherence” or cultural inauthenticity. Instead, I turn to modes of inorganic life that do not produce an agential, autonomous Asian North American subject, but engender racializing disassemblages that work out survival and wellbeing within the neoliberal, abstracting pulls of the Information Age. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Du territoire d'approvisionnement au territoire culturel : pétroarchéologie et techno-économie du silex Grain de mil durant l’Aurignacien dans le Sud-ouest de la France / From provisioning territories to cultural territories : petroarchaeology and techno-economy of Grain de mil flint during Aurignacian in South-West France

Caux, Solène 23 October 2015 (has links)
Characterising lithic raw materials is an important means of studying palaeolithic territories, allowing modes of mobilityand the organisation of human groups to be deduced. The Aquitaine Basin is one of the best-documented archaeologicalregions of Europe. However, certain materials have long been recognised within archaeological collections without theirgeographic origin or even their uniqueness being clearly demonstrated. This is particularly the case with a specific type offlint, which prehistorians call “Grain de mil”. In order to address these shortcomings, this work was carried in two phases:- a cross-disciplinary study of this material, focusing on its petroarchaeological characterisation and its geographicand geological origins. This initial phase of analysis lead to the definition of Grain de mil flint as a material typical ofthe Charente-Maritime as its formation is tied to the Jonzac anticline. It also shows that criteria for itscharacterisation, which stem mainly from the sedimentological analysis, can be applied to the petro-technoeconomicstudy of an archaeological assemblage.- a techno-economic characterisation of the management of this material during the Early and Late Aurignacian, from northern Aquitaine sites. During the Early Aurignacian, groups move seasonally across the Aquitaine Basin;exploitation of Grain de mil flint seems to indicate little circulation in the north-west of the Basin. In contrast, duringthe Late Aurignacian, provisioning territories centre to the north of the Aquitaine Basin, but open to the west andalso to the north. Grain de mil then appears to be at the heart of large-scale networks of circulations. Finally, theunderlying forces driving these strategic changes in mobility patterns are discussed, evaluating the role of bothenvironmental and human factors.

La fin du Paléolithique moyen en Poitou-Charentes et Périgord : considérations à partir de l'étude taphonomique et technoéconomique des sites du Moustier (niveaux G à K) et La Roche-à- Pierrot, Saint Césaire (niveau EJOP supérieur) / The Late Middle Palaeolithic in the Poitou-Charentes and Périgord : reflections based on a taphonmic and techno-economic analysis of the sites of Le Moustier (levels G to K) and La Roche-à-Pierrot, Saint Césaire (level EJOP supérieur)

Gravina, Bradley 15 November 2016 (has links)
During the period between broadly 60 ky and 40 ky Western Europe, and especially south-western France, was the theatre for a mosaic of bio-cultural changes. Late Neanderthal groups appeared to have diversified their lithic technology just prior to disappearing. This technological trajectory is commonly seen as culminating in the so-called ‘transitional ‘industries, notably the Châtelperronian. However, our understanding of the chronology, organisation and succession of the Late Mousterian and its possible relation to the emergence of the Upper Palaeolithic in this region is complicated due to the reliance on sites excavated sometimes as longas a century ago combined with the absence of a critical appraisal of certain key sites. This thesis presents arevision of previously recovered and newly excavated material from several important levels of Le Moustier(Lowe Shelter). When considered in light of a revision of the Châtelperronian-Neandertal association at Saint-Césaire, these results pose interesting questions for the definition of lithic techno-complexes and how we view the complex question of Neandertal extinction/replacement.

Enjeux identitaires des productions culturelles sur le Web contemporain / From culture industry to the factories of self? Identity issues of cultural production on the contemporary Web

Gomez Mejia, Gustavo 13 December 2011 (has links)
This research questions the issues surrounding Identity as screen writings reshape different conceptions on the contemporary Web. Self and group representations are studied within the techno-semiotic apparatus of websites such as Myspace, Facebook and Youtube. In order to demythologize the “innovative” values that are usually ascribed to Web devices, a long historical viewpoint is chosen to structure three main chapters. Firstly, a logocentric approach examines how logical, personal and collective Identity conceptions can be recognized on screen. Then, a mediacentric scope focuses on the historical heritage of media and culture industries as it inspires textual forms and identification practices on the Internet. Lastly, a technocentric approach deconstructs a range of discourses that label Identity as being “digital” and could be influenced by economic strategies. Across the online factories of personal “profiles”, these three studies describe a regime of cultural production that constantly switches identities between author, peer and customer positions.

En famille dans la rue : trajectoires de jeunes de la rue et carrières zonardes / In family in the street : street youth trajectories and "zonards" careers

Pimor, Tristana 03 December 2012 (has links)
To study French young homeless we use an ethnographic collaborative approach with one population of the following study fields: young homeless of one squat (interviews, participant observation, life interviews) ; and interviews, reunion observations with social workers, storekeepers and local residents. We tried to understand which street youth life trajectories facilitated the enrolment in that street world that is designated: "the Zone" and what contributes to "zonard" identity and culture. Various ways to be "wandering youth", or rather "zonard" were located. By using socialization, deviance, Goffman’s interactions and ethnicity theories, we were able to shed light on synchronic and diachronic logics leading them to it. The Zone orientation needs specific family, school, ecological, and neighbourhood backgrounds, which provoke adjustment problems. We find that young peers socialization and it activities answer to background life tensions. The position of being more or less committed in the Zone depends on actors’ biographies specificities and on their Zone careers investment. Exogenous factors such as the sanitary and social treatments, the common sense representations of youth street contribute to a social labelling, a discrimination. Associated with past backgrounds, they encourage the Zone identity continuation, increase deviant practices and build borders between normals and Zonards.

Habiter : sciences, phénoménologie et herméneutique à partir de Gaston Bachelard et Maurice Merleau-Ponty / Living in : sciences, phenomenology and hermeneutics from Gaston Bachelard and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's point of view

Mickala, Cyrille 13 June 2014 (has links)
Is it still possible to inhabitate and live the laid out and constructed space in particular, as for considering the techno and industrial flood that determines and influences the field of modern architecture? Rationalism and functionalism of a given trend of modern architecture by incorporating techno and industrial progress in the world of home, seems to condemn the experience of living in an irreversible crisis. The architectural activity wanting to meet scientific and techno-industrial progress, it requires practical experience in home and prescientific places of life, of living standards arising from the only reason. It is a general an architecture and a modern, abstract and functionalist urbanism that develop along the path of rational objectivity initiated by Galileo and Descartes, they control , manage and aestheticize the whole world and all human experience to space by stripping poetic , mythological and emotional considerations. Thus, the construction of human institutions housing becomes in identifying the crisis of living a «prosaic and technological process deriving directly from the mathematical reason, a functional diagram, or a rule of formal suits «in drawback of the concrete experience of living. But if the architecture does not matter to itself, if it is not a practice that is an end in itself because it opens to another, how can we still philosophically hope to authentically, originally and poetically live the world and the space of the house in particular? Philosophy, by phenomenological and hermeneutic approach inheritated from Gaston Bachelard and Merleau-Ponty presents to the modern experience of living, original significant ways that respond to the crisis it faces. Renewing differently more than the only purely rational knowledge the relations of man to the space, it presents itself as a remarkable way of re- understanding, rereading and re-enchantment of the original experience of inhabitating the world , the city and the space of the house.

Analyse techno-fonctionnelle des industries lithiques moustériennes des sites du Zagros : les grottes de Bisitun, Shanidar et Abri Warwasi / The question concerning normalized and non-normalized lithic productions : a case study of Zagros Mousterian; Warwasi, Shanidar and Hunters cave

Beshkani, Amir 20 November 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the dissertation is to provide a new analysis of Middle Palaeolithic industries from Shanidar, Bisitun caves and also Warwasi rockshelter. These sites are located in the center of the Zagros Mountain Range in western Iran (Middle East). Lithic industries in the Zagros region have been frequently studied by researchers (Coon 1951, 1957, Skinner 1965, Lindly 1997, Dibble 1984, 1993). These studies are often based on a comparative typological analysis, therefor for the reasons which are explained in the text, I think the studies are offering a fragmented view of lithic productions and consequently the prehistoric world of technic. This analysis is carried out using a techno-functional approach in the way to consider the chaîne opératoire and its technical role in volumetric matrix (supports) production and the supports in action, in terms of normalized and non-normalized volumes and their potential to complete a task. My objective is also to conduct a technological analysis by synchronic and diachronic perspectives on the lithic industries unearthed from different archaeological sites in Middle East during end of MIS 5, 4 and 3. The two new definitions of the exploitations structures, it means Additional and Integrated structures are a part of structural approach to achive the purposes. The purposes of study are:- In a synchronic perspective, to rethink on the structures of exploitations according to the objectives of production and tools realisation. - From a diachronic perspective, to understand the singularity of past individual’s technical solutions, their diversity and / or their variability over the time, while looking for the factors at the origin of this diversity. The hypotheses;- The variability among the assemblages, including the scrapers are closely related to the subset of incising artifacts and cutting edge geometry.- The Reduction Model, proposed by Dibble, does present only one kind of reduction within Mousterian industries.
