With Fyrisån as Recipient and Their Impact on Water Quality

Fahlgren, Ted, Hellström, Jack, Sundqvist Hallingström, Johan January 2021 (has links)
When rain falls on areas with a hard surface it can contribute to surface runoff and with that the possibility for contaminations to enter the recipient, since most stormwater is directed to the recipient with pipes, trenches and water streams directly that generally have no sort of cleaning treatment. On the other hand, when precipitation falls on areas with vegetation the water is intercepted by the plants and the roots taking up water as well. This gives less runoff and the water that reaches the recipient has been filtered through the soil, but substances can still reach the recipient.  When cities expand and more hard surfaces increase such as roads and buildings, and areas of vegetation generally decrease. Uppsala is one those cities that are under heavy expansion, which makes it very important to have a good management plan of stormwater to try and decrease the amount of substances that makes water quality worse in Fyrisån. Three parameters were used to determine the water quality in this thesis, conductivity, turbidity and nitrate content. Testing was performed on both the water from the outlets, as well as the surface water of Fyrisån. Results from the testing were compared to data collected from Sveriges lantbruksuniversitets (SLU) test sites Klastorp and Flottsund. This bachelor’s thesis examines stormwater and its impact on water quality of Fyrisån in Uppsala, Sweden. The examined area follows Fyrisån, is 8,5 km long and stretches from the northern part of Uppsala, Klastorp to the south where a stream called Sävjaån connects, which is situated about 4km before Fyrisån mouths in the lake Ekoln. The area was mapped using a GPS, giving each location with a stormwater outage a specific coordinate and afterwards a name used in the report.

Sledování změn hodnot vybraných ukazatelů jakosti pitné vody během její dopravy a skladování / Monitoring of changes of drinking water quality during accumulation and distribution

Vaňková, Jitka January 2008 (has links)
Theoretical part of the diploma thesis purveys information on drinking water and quality requirements, changes of drinking water quality during distribution and accumulation caused by disinfection, chemical processes, corrosion of constructional materials, incrusting solids, biofilms, nitrification of ammonia nitrogen, sediments in pipelines, elution of harmful matter. Attention was given to drinking water quality indicators which are associated with changes in drinking water distribution systems. In experimental part are studied changes of drinking water quality during distribution on the basis of selected drinking water quality indicators. There is specifically chemical oxygen demand, concentration of iron, manganese, ammonia ions, nitrites, nitrates, chloroform and chlorine. For periodical monitoring were selected suitable locality within the framework of Brno distribution system; for illustration were taken water samples from distribution systems of drinking water treatment plants Švařec, Vír, Štítary and Mostiště. For selected methods of analytical determination of above mentioned drinking water quality indicators are presented their characteristics. Obtained information on drinking water quality is mentioned in tabular and graphical form.

Upravitelnost povrchových vod / Treatibility of surface water

Fuks, Josef January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the master´s thesis is the topic of the treatability of surface water with the focus on the process of suspension formation. For this work I took water samples from five different places around the Brno Dam which has contended with water quality deterioration for a long period. With these water samples, the series of jar coagulation tests were done with the application of three different commonly used coagulants. In the theoretical part of the master´s thesis I deal with the composition and attributes of surface water and the technology of its treatment. Each process of treatment is briefly described here with the emphasis on the process of suspension formation. The experimental part of the master´s thesis summarizes and presents the results gained through the coagulation tests in the laboratory. I evaluate the influence of different parameters on final effectiveness of water treatment and I try to find an optimal amount of coagulant, pH and speed of fast or slow mixing. Finally I compare the suitability of each coagulant and the influence of the sampling site on the effectiveness of water treatment.

Prévision de la turbidité par apprentissage statistique : application au captage AEP d'Yport (Normandie) / Turbidity forecasting using neural network : case study of Yport drinking water pumping well (Normandy)

Savary, Michael 12 July 2018 (has links)
Approximately 25% of the world's population is supplied by water from karstic aquifers. The understanding and protection of these appears to be essential in the context of drinking water needs increasing. In addition, contamination of drinking water by turbid water can be highly damaging by resulting in possible contamination of the served populations. In the case of Normandy, regular drinking water cut-off are necessary to preserve the health of the inhabitants. The modeling and prediction of turbidity event appears as a challenging work because of the number of phenomenon and parameters involves in turbidity variation as well as the non-linearity of the link between rainfall and turbidity. Actually, few models have been proposed to represent the relationship between turbidity and rainfall. In this context, by focusing on Yport's pumping well which is responsible for Half of Le Havre city drinking water supply, we propose an application of neural networks for turbidity prediction. During this thesis work, we emphasized the need to carry out sampling campaigns for phytosanitary products to enable the identification of possible phytosanitary product proxies such as turbidity, rainfall or conductivity. Subsequently, the work carried out in this thesis enabled us to (i) designed neural network models allow to predict at 12h and 24h the turbidity variations, (ii) test several ways to improve these models, (iii) integrate multiresolution analysis into neural networks models and finally (iiii) identify a semi proxy for phytosanitary product contamination.

Does turbidity affect critical thermal maximum (CTM) of mussels : Behavioural changes in Unio tumidus under stress / Påverkar turbiditet critical thermal maximum (CTM) hos musslor : Stressbeteende för Unio tumidus

Karlsson, Ellinor January 2022 (has links)
Freshwater mussels is one the most endangered groups of organisms worldwide and stand in front of several threats. Global warming along with anthropogenic influence affect the mussel’s natural habitat and stress leads to changes in their behaviour. The aim was to investigate if the behaviour of Unio tumidus exposed to thermal stress differs depending on fine particulate matter exposure. This study hypothesises that (1) the critical thermal maximum of mussels is lower in high turbidity than in clear water (2) mussels in highly turbid water extend their foot at a lower temperature than in clear water (3) mussels have a more frequent gaping behaviour in high turbidity than in clear water. Mussels were placed in each water filled beaker with sensors glued to their shells for monitoring gaping behaviour. Aquarium heaters increased the water temperature gradually until the mussels reached their CTM. One group were placed in clear river water and one group in water with high turbidity. There was no significant difference in the CTM between the highly turbid and clear water. The mussels in the river water extended their foot at a lower temperature compared to the mussels in high turbidity. One possible explanation is that the mussels remain shut to protect themselves due to higher stress levels. Valve gaping behaviour was visually investigated and displayed different patterns between mussels in clear and highly turbid water. This study contributes with information regarding mussel behaviour and response to thermal stress which can be of value for future studies.

Jeneberang River Basin Management Capacity : Establishing of a Public Corporate in South Sulawesi Province in INDONESIA

Ageng, Pandu SW January 2005 (has links)
A multi purpose dam called Bili bili have been built in Jeneberang river basin in easternIndonesia in 1999 and providing water available to all customers. In 2004 a landslide occurredand impact to the quality of raw water, especially the amount of turbidity, dramaticallyincreased. Landslide problems started with high sedimentation rates to water infrastructures.Technically the lifetime of Bili bili multi purpose dam and reservoirs will be shorter thanplanned. In contrast, we understand and agreed that sustainable development and ensuring thecurrent use of a water resource as well as a dam should compromise its use by future generation. To reach progress in sustainability we need to establish governance structures and practices thatcan foster, guide and coordinated positive work by a host of actors on a complex of issues.Today, Indonesian Central Government is planning to establish a public corporate participationto comprehensive water resources management in eastern Indonesia. The important significant ofstakeholders in order to develop comprehensive approaches, are water agencies: regional andlocal water institution that will manage catchments areas, water infrastructures and water utilitiesas provider of drinking water to municipalities. They will be acquainted to the water and waterinstitutional capacity problems. This research examines both the current impacts on and potential future for water management ineastern Indonesia. One of the objectives of this research will be to described the current of waterresource organization, which is related to establishing of a public corporate, not onlystakeholders involvement; management and organization; but also finances and investments;operation; distribution; regulation and policy. One objective of this research will be measured byconducting interactive interviews and dialogue with the representatives of the stakeholders. Thelast objective is evaluating the Human Resources Development performances of water resourcesmanagement by a series of workshops. Additionally, some recommendations for a future watersupply system will be provided as an input for the government and local authority in order toimprove the capacity and water resources management in eastern Indonesia. The results conclude that to meet the Millennium Development Goals, the establishment of apublic corporate for supporting Indonesia’s process of decentralization is necessary where thelocal level include customers can be a much more dynamic interaction between providers ofservices and water users. A participatory method is useful to raise problems, so while the CentralGovernment can mandate a minimum service standard and the achievements of these standardscan be monitored directly at the local level. Accountability of water resources development should be considered as a vehicle when aproblem occurs with insufficiency of the existing water facilities and a big demand of waterpurposes. / www.ima.kth.se

Undersökning av turbiditet och föroreningars sammansättning i urbana vatten / Investigation of turbidity and composition of pollutants in urban stormwater

Ahlström, Matilda January 2021 (has links)
Stormwater is water that originates from snow or rainfall and that cannot naturally infiltrate the soil. When stormwater flows from hard surfaces it can transport different pollutants to watercourses. By measuring turbidity continuously and using the relationship between turbidity and pollutants the pollutant levels can be estimated. The aim of this study was partly to investigate the relationship between turbidity and phosphorus, metals and PAHs in stormwater in three catchment areas. This study also aimed to investigate how the distribution between dissolved and particulate bound concentrations of phosphorus and metals varied during different rain courses and at different catchment areas. The study was carried out in Uppsala and included continuous measurement of turbidity in three stormwater wells in three catchment areas. Seven samples were also taken at different precipitation occasions in both stormwater and in Fyrisån. In Svartbäcken there was a strong relationship between turbidity and phosphorus and metals. In Librobäck there was an indication that there was a strong relationship between turbidity and some metals and PAH:s. There was no relationship between turbidity and pollutants in Luthagen. Based on these samples, it is difficult to draw any conclusions about why the connections differed for certain pollutants and catchment areas. Due to the fact that the number of measuring points was too few the continuous measurement could not be used to estimate variations in pollution levels. To be able to use the continuous measurement, a longer sampling period and different precipitation occasions is needed. The continuous measurements were used to get an idea of when the samples were taken during the stormwater flow. The results also showed that all pollutants were mostly particulate bound for samples taken at the beginning of a precipitation occasion and with some precipitation during the sampling. For samples that did not take place in connection with stormwater runoff events, the distribution varied for the pollutants in the study. It has not been possible to see a clear trend for how the distribution between dissolved and particulate bound pollutants has varied between different catchment areas.

Therefore, the objective of this dissertation is to reduce the content of non-sugar compounds in sugar beet molasses by using natural adsorbents of mineral (different types of bentonite) and cellulosic (cellulose of different purity and modified sugar beet pulp) origin. By varying treatment conditions such as pH, molasses dry substance and the applied adsorbent concentration, the synergistic effect of the treatment conditions on the reduction efficiency of non-sugar compounds content in molasses was examined. The treatment effectiveness was determined based on changes in molasses quality parameters, namely color, turbidity, sucrose content, dry substance content and ash content.</span></p><p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings></xml><![endif]--></p><p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:TrackMoves/> <w:TrackFormatting/> <w:DoNotShowRevisions/> <w:DoNotPrintRevisions/> <w:DoNotShowMarkup/> <w:DoNotShowComments/> <w:DoNotShowInsertionsAndDeletions/> <w:DoNotShowPropertyChanges/> <w:HyphenationZone>21</w:HyphenationZone> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:DoNotPromoteQF/> <w:LidThemeOther>EN-US</w:LidThemeOther> <w:LidThemeAsian>X-NONE</w:LidThemeAsian> <w:LidThemeComplexScript>X-NONE</w:LidThemeComplexScript> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> <w:SplitPgBreakAndParaMark/> <w:EnableOpenTypeKerning/> <w:DontFlipMirrorIndents/> <w:OverrideTableStyleHps/> </w:Compatibility> <m:mathPr> <m:mathFont m:val="Cambria Math"/> <m:brkBin m:val="before"/> <m:brkBinSub m:val="&#45;-"/> <m:smallFrac m:val="off"/> <m:dispDef/> <m:lMargin m:val="0"/> <m:rMargin m:val="0"/> <m:defJc m:val="centerGroup"/> <m:wrapIndent m:val="1440"/> <m:intLim m:val="subSup"/> <m:naryLim m:val="undOvr"/> </m:mathPr></w:WordDocument></xml><![endif]--></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:&quot;Cambria&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;">According to the obtained results, the positive influence of the combined effect of applied adsorbents and treatment conditions is most pronounced for molasses quality parameters turbidity and colour, which confirms the applied adsorbents affinity towards coloured compounds retention or binding. Biophysical coupling between turbulence, veliger behavior, and larval supply

Fuchs, Heidi L January 2005 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Joint Program in Applied Ocean Science and Engineering (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Biology; and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), 2005. / This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. / Includes bibliographical references. / The goals of this thesis were to quantify the behavior of gastropod larvae (mud snails Ilyanassa obsoleta) in turbulence, and to investigate how that behavior affects larval supply in a turbulent coastal inlet. Gastropod larvae retract their velums and sink rapidly in strong turbulence. Turbulence-induced sinking would be an adaptive behavior if it resulted in increased larval supply and enhanced settlement in suitable coastal habitats. In laboratory experiments, mud snail larvae were found to have three behavioral modes: swimming, hovering, and sinking. The proportion of sinking larvae increased exponentially with the turbulence dissipation rate over a range comparable to turbulence in a tidal inlet, and the mean larval vertical velocity shifted from upward to downward in turbulence resembling energetic nearshore areas. The larval response to turbulence was incorporated in a vertical advection-diffusion model to characterize the effects of this behavior on larval supply and settlement in a tidal channel. Compared to passive larvae, larvae that sink in turbulence have higher near-bed concentrations throughout flood and ebb tides. / (cont.) This high larval supply enables behaving larvae to settle more successfully than passive larvae in strong currents characteristic of turbulent tidal inlets. A study was conducted at Barnstable Harbor, MA to estimate the responses of larvae to turbulence in the field. Gastropod larvae from different coastal environments had genus-specific responses to turbulence, suggesting that larvae use turbulence for large-scale habitat selection. On ebb tides, mud snail larvae had a similar response to turbulence as in the laboratory, with greater sinking velocities in strong turbulence. Behavior estimates differed for flood and ebb tides, indicating that additional physical cues influence behavior. Turbulence-induced sinking behavior would enhance retention and promote settlement of mud snail larvae in habitats like Barnstable Harbor. / by Heidi L. Fuchs. / Ph.D.

Peña Baca, Gilber 22 September 2021 (has links)
Decrease in freshwater reserves due to climate change and its increasingly unpredictable effects, requires the construction of new dams and maintenance of storage capacity of existing reservoirs. Damming projects, generally consider a useful life of 50 years, as a result of sediments that will accumulate in the reservoir. However, after that time has elapsed, it is not feasible to suspend the activities generated around a dam. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the useful life of reservoirs, through sediment management practices using the structures that make up the dams, which involves lower costs compared to other alternatives. Most widespread sediment management practices are sluicing, flushing, and venting of turbidity streams. It is required a review of these practices to implement them in Peru, which is developed in the present study, where evaluation of the Congalla dam is carried out. This project came into operation in October 2016, which required for its construction a particular diversion work, consisting of a metal barrel pipeline. This pipeline later became the bottom discharge, with a length of 100 m and an internal diameter of 0.60 m, much more than technically necessary, but cheaper than other options. What is sought is to take advantage of the duct section’s area, to verify its usefulness for elimination of sediments. An analysis of information has been carried out in office and arduous fieldwork in dry and rainy seasons, in months of August 2018 and March 2019 respectively. According to calculations, after two and a half years, there is an accumulation of sediments of 2793.24 m3 using empirical formulas and 1633.49 m3 according to measurements made. By opening the discharge valve, have been obtained results of up to 1.08% removal of sediments calculated through measurements, which is a good indicator of cleaning efficacy. Negative effects on the ecosystem, from the sediments released downstream from the dam, were undetectable. / Tesis
