Imagining the Future of Creative AI Tools : A Cospeculative Workshop

Eriksson, Emelie January 2022 (has links)
Creative artificial intelligence (AI) is often explored in terms of machine intelligence on a philosophical basis. As a counter-reaction, there have been calls for user-centered creative AI. This thesis aims to make visible creative practitioners’ needs, values, and ethical perspectives that might inform us on the construction of future creative AI tools. It also discusses the need for pragmatic aesthetics as a holistic design approach. Five artists of different backgrounds were invited to a co-speculative workshop where they expressed their thoughts and imaginings regarding creativity, creative tools, and AI. The results suggest that we need to be mindful of virtue ethics, N-creativity, exploration, intuition, trust, and agency when designing creative AI tools. Furthermore, the findings were used to propose design sensitivities aimed at AI researchers and designers. Future research is needed in order to make conclusions about the practical value of the proposed design sensitivities.

Common Test and Training Range Architecture

Pace, Richard, Walters, Charles E. 11 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / To address the concerns of a declining defense budget, duplicate range capabilities, and applications of new technologies, the Deputy Director, Test Facilities and Resources, Test, Systems Engineering and Evaluation Directorate, Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), initiated the Common Test and Training Range Architecture (CTTRA) Workshop project. The development of a common test and training range architecture requires a series of workshops designed to apply the expertise of the test and training ranges and the installed systems test facilities (ISTF) communities to the challenges of architecture development and interface standardization. A common range architecture with standardized interfaces will facilitate asset sharing between the Services, increase the industry-government dual-use potential of OSD's test and training range facilities, and lower the cost of testing. Further, common range interfaces will allow the efficient integration of new instrumentation and simulations at minimum cost. To support development of the CTTRA, there have been three workshops, each expanding the accomplishments of the previous workshop. The first workshop was conducted 20-22 April 1994. The other workshops were held 12-14 October 1994 and 21-24 February 1995. The goals of the workshop process are to: • Develop a common test and training range architecture that supports the requirements of the test, training, and installed systems test facility communities • Identify areas with the potential to yield near-term interface standardization benefits. • Identify potential OSD Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program (CTEIP) projects. Thus far, the workshops have developed a top level and second level candidate CTTRA, identified areas for interface standardization, and established standing working groups responsible for continuing development of CTTRA and selected areas for interface standardization.

A case study investigating the essay writing skills of Eastern Cape Technikon education students using the Writing Process Workshop language software

Masha, Khanyisa Rose 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / This research is based on a study which was made in order to investigate why the students who study Education at the Eastern Cape Technikon fail to acquire competence in essay writing, in spite of going through the Computer program that is being used by the Department of Communication. The name of this program is the Writing Process Workshop, and will be referred to as the WPW throughout the study. This program has been in use at the Technikon as a form of supplementary program for those students who were perceived to have shortfalls1 in their essay writing communication skills. This perception came about from the Department of Communication which decided that those students who scored less than 40% overall in (in language, not in content) their assignments, class works, and tests should go through the program and work independently, in the hope that their performance will improve. The study spans over two years, with the first year being the period where the researcher collected data in the form of written errors that the students made in their essays. The second year of the research is the period when the main research took place. During the second year of the research, the researcher observed the students as they went through the WPW for three months. Upon completing the program, the students were asked to respond to a questionnaire. In addition to the questionnaire, the researcher examined the student errors that occurred in the students’ essays throughout 2003 (while they were on the program, together with the ones from last year (2003). The reason for this was to determine if the errors that were present in 2002 are still present even after the students had gone through the WPW. The researcher then found that there was still considerable occurrence of the same errors in the students’ essays, a fact which led the researcher to deduce that very little improvement in the writing skills of the students has occurred between 2002 and 2003. To explain the above point further, the research findings indicated that the essay-writing competence of the subjects did not improve in spite of the WPW intervention. The researcher then went on to evaluate the program, using a set of guidelines2, and found it consistent with the requirements of the evaluation; and therefore ruled it out as the cause of the failure of students to improve their competence in writing. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher found that the students do not put conscious effort to apply what they have learnt in the program, and that some have not even completed the required tasks from the program. She also found that there is lack of integration of the software into the curriculum. Specific recommendations in Chapter 9 are given on how to facilitate this integration and to motivate the students to apply what they have learnt from the WPW to the mainstream essay writing exercises.

An unstructured numerical method for computational aeroacoustics

Portas, Lance O. January 2009 (has links)
The successful application of Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) requires high accuracy numerical schemes with good dissipation and dispersion characteristics. Unstructured meshes have a greater geometrical flexibility than existing high order structured mesh methods. This work investigates the suitability of unstructured mesh techniques by computing a two-dimensionallinearised Euler problem with various discretisation schemes and different mesh types. The goal of the present work is the development of an unstructured numerical method with the high accuracy, low dissipation and low dispersion required to be an effective tool in the study of aeroacoustics. The suitability of the unstructured method is investigated using aeroacoustic test cases taken from CAA Benchmark Workshop proceedings. Comparisons are made with exact solutions and a high order structured method. The higher order structured method was based upon a standard central differencing spatial discretisation. For the unstructured method a vertex-based data structure is employed. A median-dual control volume is used for the finite volume approximation with the option of using a Green-Gauss gradient approximation technique or a Least Squares approximation. The temporal discretisation used for both the structured and unstructured numerical methods is an explicit Runge-Kutta method with local timestepping. For the unstructured method, the gradient approximation technique is used to compute gradients at each vertex, these are then used to reconstruct the fluxes at the control volume faces. The unstructured mesh types used to evaluate the numerical method include semi-structured and purely unstructured triangular meshes. The semi-structured meshes were created directly from the associated structured mesh. The purely unstructured meshes were created using a commercial paving algorithm. The Least Squares method has the potential to allow high order reconstruction. Results show that a Weighted Least gradient approximation gives better solutions than unweighted and Green-Gauss gradient computation. The solutions are of acceptable accuracy on these problems with the absolute error of the unstructured method approaching that of a high order structured solution on an equivalent mesh for specific aeroacoustic scenarios.

Recordação e transicionalidade: a oficina de cartas, fotografias e lembranças como intervenção psicoterapêutica grupal com idosos / Remembrance and Transitionality: the workshop of letters, photographs and memories as psychotherapeutic intervention of group with elderly

Gil, Claudia Aranha 25 October 2010 (has links)
The aim of the present study is to show the Workshop of Letters, Photographs and Memories as a proposal of psychotherapeutic method focused on elderly at a group framework and verify its scope and benefits regarding this group. The research was carried out with the clinical method based on the psychoanalytical theory and specially the reading of Winnicott concepts. This therapeutic proposal described in the work was developed from topics of remembrance and transitionality, having its effects evaluated before and after the intervention. The group consisted of six elderly of both sexes, at ages ranging from 65 to 79 years old, being one man and five women, who attended a Group for The Elderly. Aiming the diagnostic comprehension, two initial interviews were performed and the instruments WHOQOL-BREF (Inventory of Quality of Life brief mode), the BDI- Beck Inventory of Depression and the Thematic Apperception Test for Elderly- SAT were used. The study describes the psychotherapeutic process, conducted in group, briefly in 16 sessions, as well as the movement among the fields that became evident and the changes that occurred in the participants lives. From the analysis of the psychotherapeutic process, the Workshop proposal carried out with this group proved to be efficient. There was a significant improvement of the depressive symptoms and, overall, of the quality of life of those who concluded their participation in the group. At the end of the study, it was possible to observe that the framework used in the therapeutic proposal contributed to a greater integration and a chance of healthy remembrance reflecting experiences that point to the emotional growth of the participants of the group

Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-05T18:12:39Z (GMT). This master’s dissertation studies the process of writing production on a literary workshop. Émile Benveniste’s and Jacqueline Authier-Revuz’s enunciation theories are the basis for our study. From Benveniste, we borrow the reflection about the double meaning of language in order to derive a way to understand the artistic use of language. From Authier-Revuz, we take the theory of constitutive heterogeneity / non-coincidence of speech, to fundament the understanding of the act of enunciation as the stage for a constant and mandatory negotiation between subject-author and the other(s)/Other that cross him/her in the act of production of literary writing. Our object of study is comprised of eight drafts and a final version of a short story elaborated from an exercise suggested at a Workshop of Literary Creation. With the aid of classifications formulated by genetic criticism – suppression, insertion and substitution -, added of categories proposed by Endruweit (2006), we observed the changes that took place from

No. of bitstreams: 1 Allyne Ribeiro.pdf: 1684842 bytes, checksum: 397e82fe5402f0a5f5d6608d82bf5718 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-01-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Introduction: This study proposes a reflection on the demands of clinical speech: concerns and anxieties of patients who face problems with reading and writing. Through Language Workshop, we investigated and dealt with the writing demands of patients treated by a team from the Family Health Strategy (FHS), from the idea that writing practices must be meaningful to the patients, as well as socially contextualized . Objective: The aim of this work was to collect and investigate the potential of the Language Workshop as a care device and health promoter in primary care. Method: research intervention, carried out through the Language Workshop sessions, which were mediated by situations and scenarios constructed by the research patients and the researcher. These activities were supported by theoretical formulations of reference. Results and Discussion: The Language Workshop, in addition to promoting the understanding and the displacement of the patient without regard to their anxieties and concerns with reading and writing, pointed to the fact that such a device, putting at stake the dimensions of everyday life and history people and families in a given community, promotes literacy processes, and facilitates learning of formal writing. In this sense and in certain ways, the capability of the Language Workshop is in the process of intensive construction, singularization and analysis of clinical events experienced collectively in the case through genres of written language. Conclusion: The Language Workshop, as a medical device to promote health care, allowed to investigate and deal with written demands of patients, and promoted social and emotional movement, expanding the possibilities for overcoming reading and writing disorders shown / Introdução: A presente pesquisa se propõe à reflexão sobre uma demanda da clínica fonoaudiológica: inquietações e desassossegos de pacientes em face de problemas de leitura e escrita.

Pricing for the players or the hobbyists? : A look into Games Workshop pricing

Engstrand, Sebastian January 2018 (has links)
This paper looks into the pricing of Warhammer 40 000 miniature, manufactured by the company Games Workshop. On some internet forums there has been a discussion on whether the prices rise without giving anything in return, and whether the company cares about the players or the hobbyists. To help answer this question the correlation coefficiant between the price of the miniatures in both Pound and the in game Points and between Swedish Krona and in game Points was calculated. If a correlation exist between the two that would mean one gets a relatively similar points return per Pound, Swedish Krona or other currency spent. This was done on 139 different samples of miniatures/units. The results indicates that there is indeed a strong correlation between the two. This could mean that either the price is dependent on the points or vice versa. Higher price leads to higher points though, meaning that the customer get a similar amount of points relative to what they spend in money. This means, from a game perspective you get relatively the same back from you investment. To answer whether one gets something back in return for a higher price, the answer would be a higher amount of points.
