This work has the goal of proposing a didactic sequence, with historical-philosophical approach, using experiments and historical demonstrations in the introduction of electromagnetism concepts in High School. Through this didactic sequence, the students of high school are presented to the concept of electromagnetic waves, in a historical dynamic that includes discussions about the nature of science. The historical experiment chosen didactically as central is the Oliver Lodge's demonstrative experiment, which designed an effective system for receiving electromagnetic waves whose main innovation was the use of the coesor instead of the Hertz’s antenna. In this dissertation, is assumed a pedagogical perspective that approaches the Historical-Critical Pedagogy (PHC) insofar as it considers the dissemination of live and up-to-date contents and the transmission of knowledge historically accumulated by humanity, central tasks of Education. We verified an affinity between the PHC and the Science Teaching and we concluded that the PHC referential can subsidize the use of History and Philosophy of Science in Science Teaching. Finally, a report and evaluation of the development and effective application of the didactic sequence proposed in the classroom is presented. The Educational Product developed in this master's work consists of the didactic sequence and its description, in the texts and questionnaires used in the classes and in the text to support the teacher.

TEXTOS ORIGINAIS DE CIENTISTAS E TEXTOS SOBRE HISTÓRIA DAS IDEIAS DA CIÊNCIA EM UMA PROPOSTA DIDÁTICA SOBRE ÓTICA NA FORMAÇÃO INICIAL DE PROFESSORES DE FÍSICA / SCIENTISTS ORIGINAL TEXTS AND HISTORY OF SCIENTIFIC IDEAS TEXTS IN A DIDACTIC APPROACH ON OPTICS IN THE INITIAL FORMATION OF PHYSICS TEACHERS

Schirmer, Saul Benhur 26 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Science Teaching in Brazil has been increasingly acknowledged as a research field and has also been seeking for alternatives to improve scientific education in all levels. One of the research fields is the incorporation of History and Philosophy of Science (HFC) in education, which has received significant attention by government guidelines and researchers in the field. This work presents the results obtained by the implementation of a HFC related didactic module with undergraduate students from UFSM s course of Physics. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the use of Scientists Original Texts (TOC) and History of Scientific Ideas Texts (THIC) in Science Teaching, more specifically in Physics Teaching. In order to subsidize the elaboration of the module, we performed a research in the field magazines and events, trying to ascertain to what extent these publications concern class works and which are the resources used. The results were classified in classroom approaches or HFC subsidies. The results show that there is a low number of classroom approaches, and the main resources for HFC use in the classroom are texts. The results also show that there are almost no reports of the use of TOC and THIC in undergraduate courses. Optics was the chosen theme and conceptual aspects, nature of science aspects and the aspects concerning the requirements of teacher formation were considered. The results, obtained by the application of questionnaires during the length of classes, have indicated an advancement concerning students conceptions about science. They also have indicated that few students succeeded in using the discussions about Optics conceptual contents in the questions proposed. According to the research analysis, there was great acceptance about the texts, especially the ones concerning THIC. Based on the results, we propose didactic module changes and other possible research developments.

How does a grade 8 science teacher learn to teach quantum mechanics?: an exploratory case study

Sen, Goksenin 04 October 2017 (has links)
In 2016 the Ministry of Education in British Columbia (BC), Canada introduced the topics of quantum mechanics (QM) into the Grade 8 science curriculum. Science teachers with or without QM background are expected to learn and teach QM. Stemming from a constructivist theoretical framework, this in-depth exploratory case study explores the processes of learning and teaching the topics of QM by asking: “How does a Grade 8 science teacher learn to teach QM?” The purpose was to understand the teacher’s QM learning process, the development of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in QM and teacher’s views of the nature of science (NOS). The data was collected through multiple sources and analyzed by using thematic analysis. The themes were identified under five main categories: 1) the development of PCK in QM is complex, 2) the student-centered approach mandated in the redesigned curriculum may be limiting, 3) the nature of learning QM is not different than learning other subjects, 4) middle school science education is inconsistent with the current level of scientific knowledge, and 5) the development of informed views of NOS requires an accumulation and synthesis of prior knowledge in history and philosophy of science (HPS). The study proposes two previously unexplored integral aspects of PCK framework, since: the ‘allotted time’ in learning and teaching a subject and ‘pre-PCK’ change the nature of PCK development. The term pre-PCK was coined referring to the specific content oriented and student-centered activities that take place before the class with the goal of establishing an effective basis for the PCK development. The insights emerging from the study would be of interest to other Grade 8 science teachers in BC, pre-service teacher program coordinators at the universities, and the Ministry of Education in BC to provide institutional support. This study would also contribute to closing the knowledge and communication gaps between the fields of science, science education practice and science education research. / Graduate

Strange devices on the Jacobean stage : image, spectacle, and the materialisation of morality

Davies, Callan John January 2015 (has links)
Concentrating on six plays in the 1610s, this thesis explores the ways theatrical visual effects described as “strange” channel the period’s moral anxieties about rhetoric, technology, and scepticism. It contributes to debates in repertory studies, textual and material culture, intellectual history, theatre history, and to recent revisionist considerations of spectacle. I argue that “strange” spectacle has its roots in the materialisation of morality: the presentation of moral ideas not as abstract concepts but in physical things. The first part of my PhD is a detailed study of early modern moral philosophy, scepticism, and material and textual culture. The second part of my thesis concentrates on Shakespeare’s Cymbeline (1609-10) and The Tempest (1611), John Webster’s The White Devil (1612), and Thomas Heywood’s first three Age plays (1611-13). These spectacular plays are all written and performed within the years 1610-13, a period in which the changes, challenges, and developments in both stage technology and moral philosophy are at their peak. I set these plays in the context of the wider historical moment, showing that the idiosyncrasy of their “strange” stagecraft reflects the period’s interest in materialisation and its attendant moral anxieties. This thesis implicitly challenges some of the conclusions of repertory studies, which sometimes threatens to hierarchise early modern theatre companies by seeing repertories as indications of audience taste and making too strong a divide between, say, “elite” indoor and “citizen” outdoor playhouses. It is also aligned with recent revisionist considerations of spectacle, and I elide divisions in criticism between interest in original performance conditions, close textual analysis, or historical-contextual readings. I present “strangeness” as a model for appreciating the distinct aesthetic of these plays, by reading them as part of their cultural milieu and the material conditions of their original performance.

To Describe, Transmit or Inquire : Ethics and technology in school / Att beskriva, överföra eller utforska : Etik och teknik i skolan

Gardelli, Viktor January 2016 (has links)
Ethics is of vital importance to the Swedish educational system, as in many other educational systems around the world. Yet, it is unclear how ethics should be dealt with in school, and prior research and evaluations have found serious problems regarding ethics in education. The field of moral education lacks clear and widely accepted definitions of key concepts, and these ambiguities negatively impact both research and educational practice. This thesis draws a distinction between three approaches to ethics in school – the descriptive ethics approach, the value transmission approach, and the inquiry ethics approach – and studies in what way (if at all) they are prescribed by the national curriculum for the Swedish compulsory school, how they relate to students’ moral reasoning about technology choices and online behaviour, and what pedagogical merits and disadvantages they have. Hopefully, this both contributes to reducing the ambiguities of the field, and to answering the question of how ethics should be dealt with in education. The descriptive ethics approach asserts that school should teach students empirical facts about ethics, such as what views and opinions people have. The value transmission approach holds that school should mediate some set of predefined values to the students and make sure the students come to accept these values. The inquiry ethics approach is the view that school should teach students to reason and think critically about ethics and to engage in ethical inquiry. The role of ethics in the curriculum has not been studied in light of the above distinction, in prior research, and such an investigation is undertaken here. The results suggest that ethics has a prominent, but complicated, role in the Swedish national curriculum. Although no explicit distinction is drawn or acknowledged in the curriculum, all three approaches are prescribed throughout the curriculum, albeit to different degrees. In the general section of the curriculum, the value transmission and inquiry ethics approaches are more extensively prescribed than the descriptive ethics approach. It was found that most of the syllabi contained explicit references to ethics, while some only contained implicit references to ethics, and two syllabi lacked references to ethics altogether. In the syllabi, the inquiry ethics approach is the most dominant, both in the sense of being present in the most syllabi, and in the sense of being more strongly prescribed in many of the syllabi where several approaches occur. The value transmission approach has the weakest role in the syllabi. In total, the inquiry ethics approach is the approach most strongly prescribed by the curriculum. But prior research has shown that inquiry ethics is very rarely implemented in the classroom. In this thesis, it is found that the inquiry ethics and the value transmission approaches are incompatible, given certain reasonable interpretations, which makes the finding that inquiry ethics is rarely implemented less surprising, since value transmission is practiced in schools. The students, in their moral reasoning about technology choices, reasoned in accordance with several classical normative theories – including consequentialism, deontological ethics and virtue ethics – and in doing so, they expressed reasoning that in the discussion is found to be in conflict with the values of the value foundation in the curriculum. These findings complement earlier findings, for example that students in their actions contradict the value foundation, by adding that such conflicts also exist in their reasoning. The existence of these conflicts is found to be problematic for a value transmission approach. Many of the students defended very restrictive views on disclosing personal information online, and prior research as well as the present data has shown that adults typically hold views that are very similar to these, concerning how they think that young people ought to act online. On the other hand, youths’ actual online behaviour, as reported in earlier studies, differs considerably from this. In line with this, the students also seemed to endorse a form of private morals view, according to which moral choices are simply up to one’s own taste, which would yield an escape exit from the restrictive views mentioned above, and permit any behaviour. In the discussion, it is argued that this is the result of an attempt at value transmission from the grown-up community, probably including teachers, which might seem to work, since the students claim to hold certain views, but which likely instead constitutes a false security, since these values are not actually accepted, but only paid lip service to, and the adults are therefore wrong in their belief that the students are protected by a certain set of values (that they think the students are upholding), since the students in fact do not uphold, and therefore do not act based upon, these values. This situation risks making the students more vulnerable than had no value transmission attempt been taken in the first place. Hence, the attempted value transmission runs the risk of counteracting its purpose of helping the students acquire a safe online behaviour.Throughout the moral reasoning mentioned above, extensive variations in the students’ reasoning were found, both interpersonally and intrapersonally, both in the decision method and in the rightness criterion dimensions, as well as in between the dimensions. The existence of such variations is a novel finding, and while possible applications in future research are discussed, it is also noted that this existence constitutes a reason to question the successfulness of both the value transmission and the inquiry ethics endeavours of the educational system. The results and discussions described above highlight the importance of investigating the merits of the different approaches. Several arguments that arise from the material of this thesis are presented, evaluated and discussed. The ability of each approach to fulfil some alleged key aims of ethics education is scrutinised; their abilities to educate for good citizenship, to educate for quality of life of the individual, and to facilitate better educational results in other subjects are all investigated, as well as the ability of each approach to help counteract the influence from online extremist propaganda aimed at young people and to promote safe online behaviour in general. It is concluded that the inquiry ethics approach has the strongest support from the material of this thesis. Some consequences for school practice are discussed, and it is concluded that changing the role of ethics in the curriculum would be beneficial, downplaying the role of value transmission and further increasing, and making more explicit and clear, the role of inquiry ethics. It is also shown that there are strong reasons for the inclusion of a new subject in the Swedish compulsory education with special focus on ethics. Some possible causes, and some consequences, of this is discussed. / Godkänd; 2016; 20160518 (vikvik); Nedanstående person kommer att disputera för avläggande av filosofie doktorsexamen, Namn: Viktor Gardelli Ämne: Pedagogik / Education Avhandling: TO DESCRIBE, TRANSMIT, OR INQUIRE Ethics and technology in school Opponent: Gudmundur Frimannsson, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, University of Akureyri, Akureyri, Island, Ordförande: Professor Eva Alerby Institutionen för konst, kommunikation och lärande Luleå tekniska universitet Tid: Fredag den 2 september 2016, kl. 10.00 Plats: D770, Luleå tekniska universitet

História e filosofia da ciência no ensino de ciências naturais: o consenso e as pespectivas a partir de documentos oficiais, pesquisas e visões dos formadores / History and philosophy of science in teaching of natural sciences: the consensus and the perspectives from official documents, research and teachers viewpoints

Kilwangy Kya Kapitango-a-Samba 13 June 2011 (has links)
Our research goal is to analyze the detachment of the theoretical orientations from the decision-making institutions (DMIs) with regards to the inclusion of aspects of the approach of History and Philosophy of Science in the Teaching of Natural Sciences (HPSTNS), in order to identify the decision-making institutions and learn where they distanced themselves from each other regarding HPSTNS. Thus, a single qualitative case was delimited, using Brazil as a study unit under the HPSTNS aspect and the DMIs as multiple analyses units. To collect and examine the data, semi-structured interviews with experts, content and documentation analysis were used. The outcome of the research was the identification of four decision makers related to HPSTNS, of which three were analyzed. We concluded that they exhibit methodological and epistemological disconnection/discrepancy with different perspectives, therefore, the convergence between the DMIs is far from occurring in the educational systems actual material, rendering unfeasible the effective HPSTNS. The official rules point to an external contextualization (social-cultural) and the research appears to assume the HPS as the natural science teaching content. However from the 72 research papers analyzed: 34 showed internal contextualization; 16, criticisms; 9, motivations; and 8, external contextualization. In teacher education, most of the courses point to the internal context (7), the teachers perceptions indicate didactic instrumentation, and criticism is an HPS approach as a perspective of critical reflection. The three DMIs constitute their own ontological, political and decision-making scenario, they form a bi-conditional constellation with communicative sequence and decision making disruptions. The school reality has not been considered as a Decision-Making Institution nor sufficiently consulted for the recommendations of decisions and directives of those three (DMIs). Finally, we offer some reflections and proactive perspectives on the subject.

Tougas, Kevin 12 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study is to propose a genealogy of the theory of “l’art pour l’art”, elaborated in the historical context of Romanticism. Taking as a starting point the movement of autonomy of the Fine Arts and aesthetics of the 18th century, this research is an attempt to reconstruct the main lines of this new artistic doxa that appeared under the July Monarchy. Following the same approach of dissociation between the notions of Beauty and Good that characterized the birth of the aesthetic discipline in the Enlightenment, the theory of “l’art pour l’art” is generally recognized because of its radical rejection of all forms of morality. Yet, behind this aspect, it appears that some of its proponents have shown a very strong ethical rigour in the exercise of their art. Gustave Flaubert is definitely one of them. In his Correspondance, a complete program of a “moral of art” is deployed. Rebuilding the foundations of this program will occupy the second and final major part of this work when the first part will be largely devoted to the aesthetic thought of Karl Philipp Moritz, a character who is sometimes misunderstood. This philosophical writer undoubtedly deserves to be considered in the genesis of the ideas of the theory of “l’art pour l’art”. His autotelic conception of Beauty certainly offers one of the most radical versions of the independence of the fine arts from morality on the 18th century. Moreover, his concept of formative imitation of beauty announces the profound changes that will affect the romantic conception of the artist and the act of creation in the 19th century.

Sleep and Dream-States in Literature, Science, and Medicine, 1700-1899

Stephanie L. Schatz (5930234) 12 December 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study as been to contribute to the emerging interdisciplinary field of historical sleep studies, which spans the biological and social sciences, legal studies, and the humanities. As an interdisciplinary scholar based primarily in the humanities, my goals have been twofold: to develop a critical archive for the use of scholars in this emerging field; and to demonstrate how that archive might be used to productive effect in literary studies. To that end, this project begins with a critical introduction to the field of sleep studies and its relationship to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century thought and follows with two distinct but connected sections: the archive itself and a short series of literary case-studies drawn from across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. My hope is that these case studies will show how the materials in the archive allow literary scholars to produce new insights about familiar, canonical texts. <br>

Laplante-Anfossi, Marie 12 1900 (has links)
Anyone interested in the thought of Meister Eckhart is confronted with the glaring difference in style, if not in content, between his Latin academic writings and his Middle-High German predicative writings, which were addressed to two distinct communities. These apparent differences raise the question of the gnoseological model to which Eckhart adheres and require to clarify the type of knowledge he sought to transmit. The present work attempts to shed light on Eckhart's theory of knowledge in order to draw conclusions about Eckhart's transmission of knowledge. This research project concludes that the differences observed in the corpuses stem from an avowed and justified attempt to favour the transmission of knowledge to a non-academic public from a single onto-gnoseological model, giving intelligibility to the differences by understanding them as a matter of the form of discourse. In order to reach these conclusions, this dissertation, first of all, vindicates Eckhart's philosophical quality and importance by clarifying the reasons for his categorization as a “mystic”. Second, once the rationality of Eckhart's thought has been established, I will develop and analyze Eckhart's theory of knowledge as it appears in chosen primary sources. Finally, in a third stage, this dissertation examines the role and importance of the change of language achieved by Eckhart in order to offer an expression to the problem of the accessibility, transmission and circulation of academic knowledge.

Die 'Philosophische Bibliothek' im 19. Jahrhundert

Schneider, Ulrich Johannes 18 February 2015 (has links)
