Björndotter, Annika January 2022 (has links)
The thesis analyzes how a theoretical framework and method can be formulated to make mental illness visible in photographs posted on social media. The aim is to create a basis for further research. The framework is built on time, conversation, and language. Based on Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes and W J T Mitchells thoughts, a timeline is drawn. On it, both emotions and bodies are constantly present. Jon Kabat-Zinns mindfulness method is used to give an insight into how emotions can be handled with inspiration from eastern meditation techniques. The typical “yoga image” is analyzed. It is characterized by a woman doing a yoga pose, often placed in the middle of the image surface in an exotic place. The body ideal is recognized from other fitness contexts. The material is from @kinoyoga which is run by the yoga profile Kino MacGregor. Examining photographs that communicate perfect health puts this thesis questions at the forefront. The study shows that photographs on social media are not static objects but are parts in an ongoing documentation where meaning is not given. Instead meaning keeps transforming and is contently renegotiated. When the boundaries between the physical and digital realities are blurred, it becomes difficult to distinguish the needs of the image from one’s own. The emotional experiences of shortcomings and desires can occur and start to interact. As Instagram's algorithms exploit these emotions, it becomes difficult to break the vicious circle. Instagram users are forced to abide by the app's rules. The responsibility for the ill health generated should be the owners of for-profit companies and political institutions with the power to legislate.

Mediální terorismus prostřednictvím bakterie E.coli / "Media terrorism" via bacteria E.coli

Füleová, Veronika January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis "Media terrorism via bacteria E.coli" puts the so-called cucumber affair from Summer 2011 into wider context and aims to discover the main attributes of contemporary risks and define the way they are presented in the media. Misguiding media releases and the inability to identify the source of the bloody diarrhea outbreak in Germany caused by E.coli bacteria have collectively had a significant impact on consumer behavior and economic stability on a global level. Most people are dependent on government and expert authorities due to the fact that they cannot recognize what represents a realistic threat and what serves as a basis for media sensation. This is why this thesis studies the social constructionist theory, basic media routines and practices as well as theoretical concepts that support the production of pseudo-events. A content analysis of selected Czech dailies and weeklies was executed in order to enable a comparison of the language that has been common for all "pandemics" in the 21st century.

To reach this goal I decided to deal with the models and references of Freud. The principal results were that the models which had more weight in the development of his idea of unconscious were his clinical work with the hysterics, as well as his divergence with the conventional ideas about this affection, his contact with the hypnosis and the interlocution he established with Charcot, Breuer and Fliess. And the principal references were the agnosticism and the physicalism,in relation to what it concerns the form by which he finally distanced himself.

Carolina Cavalcanti Henriques 11 October 2013 (has links)

Among the recurring phenomena found chronic pain and fibromialgia. Studies on these subjects feature distinct positions: some consider such pain as hysterical phenomena, others as a manifestation of the body down. We intend to verify the specifics of chronic pain, since the possibility of a hysterical demonstration or depressed, but advancing the hypothesis that they may be manifestations of melancholic framework. Take the theory of Freud as the main source of our studies on the melancholy and cotejaremos also latest authors dealing with the phenomenon of pain, particularly the psychoanalytic literature. Patients who mobilized us to undertake such studies were those that were curious traits: low fluidity pulsional, dismay, pain in various parts of the body, psychosomatic symptoms, anxiety quite expressive and usually marked by a lack of sense, connoting, on the other hand, melancholic traits and somatic symptoms. In melancholy, a loss in pulsional life while suffering from a normal grief, that doesn't happen; libido peels back the object, due to a position occupied by this lost object, in which there was a double job to him directed, of love and hate, so liable to be drafted in the conscious level. In this same text, it shows that in the pathological mourning, the missing object remains invested, libidinalmente, resulting in an attachment to him, without it can be elaborated, causing therefore a shadow of the object about the subject's ego itself. That means there's a hyper narcissistic investment in object, in which the subject is fixed by pasting it. In a world facing individualism, for narcissism and without ideals is likely to stimulate more this encapsulation, preventing the subject from link. In contemporary clinical symptoms are more of this nature: are primary, narcissistic character, in which the subject finds himself wrapped in a world empty and without meaning. In this context, we think it's more conducive to speak of melancholy subjects, distinct from the depressed, because these make a libidinal investment withdrawal, but maintains a relationship with object. “To shape God, Shape Self”: The Political Manipulation of the Human Body and Reclamation of Space in Octavia E. Butler’s The Parable of the Sower

James, Lisa January 2018 (has links)
This paper considers the role of the human body in Octavia E. Butler’s The Parable of theSower and the way it interacts with defined space to stage expressive forms of politicalopposition. Understanding the relationship between physical or metaphorical space and thecontradictions of the societies they encompass is crucial to deciphering Butler’s near-futuredystopia; a world where the problems of real-life Los Angeles and Southern California aredistorted into a gross carnivalesque of gender stereotypes, sociopolitical tensions, and vigilante warfare. This paper places a special emphasis on the areas of social and political stagnation found in Butler’s vision of near-future L.A., and analyses the dangers of clinging to archaic, patriarchal systems that no longer resonate with contemporary audiences. Focus is also placed on potential methods of resistance against oppressive social institutions, particularly exploring the limitations met by protagonist, Lauren Oya Olamina, in her attempts to voice concerns in a society where language is so nuanced by “traditional” gendered qualities that the female voice carries no political value. This papers also questions theories which promote violent confrontation as a means to social reform, disregarding collateral damage and victims of war in favour of insurgency. By exploring the movement of the human body away from defined space, this paper supports Butler’s notion of alternative prosocial action which celebrates the margins of society, positing a nurturing, constructive means to resist political opposition.

Hysteria on the Hardwood: A Narrative History of Community, Race, and Indiana's "Basketbrawl" Tradition

Eskew, Kelly R. January 2012 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In 1964, Muncie Central High School got the “death penalty” at the hands of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) new commissioner, Phil N. Eskew, after post-game brawling at a boys basketball game led to a broader investigation of the entire program. In the closing moments of the game, a Muncie Central opponent was bloodied by an inbound pass to the face and fans erupted in violence, swarming the floor. The ensuing investigation revealed racial tensions, issues of sexual mores, political discord, and deep problems in the web of interrelationships that make up the phenomenon of Hoosier Hysteria. After a closed-door hearing and two days of deliberations, Eskew and the IHSAA Board of Control announced their decision, and the punishment prescribed made front page headlines across the state and beyond.
