Smartphones and Tablets: Patterns of Usage among College Student Populations

Phillips, Ann (Higher education researcher) 05 1900 (has links)
This study offers insight into students' use and desire to use mobile devices for educational purposes. I examined college students' mobile device usage on the basis of demographic factors including sex, age, ethnicity, class standing, mode of delivery, and socioeconomic status. This study also investigated factors that affect students' likelihood to use mobile devices for academic pursuits. I utilized data from the EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research's (ECAR) 2015 Student Technology Survey. Of the 10,000 undergraduate respondents, 56% were female, 70% were between the ages of 18-24, 73% attended college full time and the breakdown of ethnicity included 59% Caucasian, 16% Hispanic, 13% African American, 8% Asian and 1% Native American. The results indicated that traditional aged students reportedly used smartphones more frequently, whereas non-traditional aged students reportedly used tablets more. Students most frequently reported using their devices in class to connect to the learning material. Institutional technology infrastructure and support were strong factors impacting students' use of smartphones. Results of this research can assist higher education faculty and administrators in devising comprehensive training and technology plans to support and encourage students' use of mobile devices for educational purposes.

How Graphic Design can help motivate Duolingo users : A phenomenological investigation and visual analysis of how Graphic Design can help gamification in Duolingo to motivate its users to learn Swedish.

Svensson, Emma January 2022 (has links)
Duolingo is today the most popular app when it comes to language learning. Gamification plays a major role in increasing the motivation of Duolingo's users. Duolingo has a strong graphic identity that has been developed over the past ten years and in this paper, I investigate how they with the help of colour and shape that help the gamification elements to strengthen the motivation of the user. Because there are so many different gamification elements in Duolingo, it is the "skill-tree" and the app's front page that are the focus of the analysis. The results show that Duolingo has a very well thought out design that is simple but powerful with a lot of symbolism that originates from ancient cultures where the symbolism from both icons and colours has wide meanings and can be decoded by people from many different cultures and backgrounds.

Unknown Date (has links)
The integration of the internet and mobile devices satisfies the drsire of “information on the go”. This demand also matches the information usage behavior for travelers. A well designed mobile traveling information with convenient user interfaces helps them to get what they need at any moment while traveling through mobile internet. However, the current traveling information in mobile platform is usually location based services. The kind of services does not provide a complete traveling content but only small pieces of information. The thesis focuses on the design of an integrated digital content on mobile devices for the travelers. It includes the design of content structure, information display and user interface. The mobile platform targets on those who equipped with multimedia and 3G wireless communication ability. We propose a content planning and informative structure for traveling information. A prototyping system was first made to evaluate the concept of information design. Then the implementation and further evaluation was done by using the NOKIA N73 3G cell phone. The results show that personal mobile devices offering a new stage for the dynamic traveling information.

以雲端支援架構建置RFID為基礎之個人化無所不在學習系統 / A cloud-supported framework for implementing RFID-based personalized ubiquitous learning system

Lin, Yen Chih Unknown Date (has links)
This paper proposes a ubiquitous learning system framework, in order to improve traditional e-learning method for delivering education. Learners could connect to the learning system on the cloud by mobile devices at any time and any place. It could automatically access digital educational resources such as learning courses and supplementary materials. Using the RFID tag for uniqueness and radio frequency identification function. In addition to context-aware and reading the information of objects around the enviroment. It also can be a personalised identify for learners to login and access one’s own function of learning courses or learning scheduling to create personalized ubiquitous learning. There is lack of education due to digital divide which calls for improvement of distributing educational resources. The proposed system architecture incorporates cloud computing for back-end development technology. In order to reduce resource overload of the single system and lack of bandwidth, distributing the learning system, e-learning course and database to several places enable learners to take on-demand educational services.

Application of Kano model to the relationships of queueing information provision, service quality, and customer satisfaction

Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of this paper is to discuss the impact of queue information provisions. As we observe the latest application of revealing queue information via mobile device to deal with the queuing management problem, this research intends to provide a new viewpoint of queuing information crossing different research issues. We develop research framework from four facets: (1) perception management, (2) queuing research, (3) Kano model, and (4) SERVQUAL. The research is divided into three parts. First, via Kano model we find the service quality of queuing information and categorize the service qualities into 6 categories. Second, we examine the relationships between the overall service quality of queuing information provision and customer satisfaction. Third, we are also concerned the impact of consume situation, so the hypothesis will be tested in the different simulated situation in experiment. According to the result, we discover that most queuing information provisions’ service qualities are attractive quality dimension and One-dimensional quality. Besides, the hypothesis of queuing information provisions’ service quality is accepted, which also proves the results which we find in the first part of this research by Kano model. Finally, this research examines the effect of consume situations on the queuing information, and we also have further discussion about the exception situation.

Mobile Device Self-efficacy as a Moderator for the Relationship between Price Sensitivity and Price Comparison

Unknown Date (has links)
Mobile devices are more and more popular today. According to Google’s market report, smart phone penetration rate has reached 51% in Taiwan in 2013. With various features and increasing applications, mobile devices have changed our daily lives in many ways. There is much literature exploring the relationship between price sensitivity and price comparison behavior. However there is no such research exploring the relationship in a mobile device setting. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to study price comparison behavior on a mobile device. Specifically, I explore the moderating effect of mobile device self-efficacy on the relationship between price sensitivity and price comparison on a mobile device. In the paper, I develop a conceptual model according to literature review. To measure constructs in the model, I identify appropriate items based on literature and revise the items to fit the study. Data were collected using online questionnaires. The survey population is common shoppers in Taiwan who are using mobile device. Total 504 valid samples were obtained. As for data analysis, structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple-group analysis were used to test the model. The results show that the moderating effect of mobile device self-efficacy is significant. Price-sensitive shoppers compare prices on a mobile device only when they consider themselves capable of operating the device. Specifically, for high price-sensitive shoppers, high mobile device self-efficacy make them much more intend to compare prices on a mobile device. The study has many implications especially when mobile device is becoming a commodity and product prices cannot be more transparent.

An intuitive motion-based input model for mobile devices

Richards, Mark Andrew January 2006 (has links)
Traditional methods of input on mobile devices are cumbersome and difficult to use. Devices have become smaller, while their operating systems have become more complex, to the extent that they are approaching the level of functionality found on desktop computer operating systems. The buttons and toggle-sticks currently employed by mobile devices are a relatively poor replacement for the keyboard and mouse style user interfaces used on their desktop computer counterparts. For example, when looking at a screen image on a device, we should be able to move the device to the left to indicate we wish the image to be panned in the same direction. This research investigates a new input model based on the natural hand motions and reactions of users. The model developed by this work uses the generic embedded video cameras available on almost all current-generation mobile devices to determine how the device is being moved and maps this movement to an appropriate action. Surveys using mobile devices were undertaken to determine both the appropriateness and efficacy of such a model as well as to collect the foundational data with which to build the model. Direct mappings between motions and inputs were achieved by analysing users' motions and reactions in response to different tasks. Upon the framework being completed, a proof of concept was created upon the Windows Mobile Platform. This proof of concept leverages both DirectShow and Direct3D to track objects in the video stream, maps these objects to a three-dimensional plane, and determines device movements from this data. This input model holds the promise of being a simpler and more intuitive method for users to interact with their mobile devices, and has the added advantage that no hardware additions or modifications are required the existing mobile devices.

The objective of this research is to analyze the digital information policies adopted in the public high schools of the capitals located in the Northeast region, regarding the adoption of mobile devices for access to information. For specific objectives, schools were mapped to be part of the sample surveyed. Next, the identification of the mobile devices used in the schools studied and the investigation of the consequences of the use of the mobile devices for access to the information and finally to understand the reasons of the adoption or not of the mobile devices by the schools to be part of the investigation. It is a descriptive research, with an approach that is characterized as qualitative and quantitative. The procedures adopted refer to the study of multiple cases and the techniques were based on questionnaires with teachers from the nine federative units of the Northeast region. For the execution of the research, the teachers of the average level of nine units of education of the Northeast - being a school in each capital - were consulted through questionnaires sent by electronic mail. The questionnaires sought to investigate the concept that the teacher has about the use of mobile digital technologies in the classroom, what devices are adopted, if there is difficulty in the use of these technologies in the classroom, how often the use in class, technology Digital technology most used between the cell phone, tablet and notebook and how is the experience with the use of digital technology in the classroom. The results show that the tablet, a mobile device offered by the Ministry of Education to many public schools in the Northeast region, mainly for the use of teachers, is one of the least used mobile technologies used by teachers. The mobile and the notebook are work tools most used by teachers in class, finding no difficulty in using and the results obtained with these mobile technologies in the classroom, add value in the acquisition of knowledge regarding the classes without the aid of these technologies . We have identified examples of digital information policies within schools in Fortaleza (CE) and João Pessoa (PB) that can serve as a basis for the creation of a digital information policy in other states.

Roca Ramos, Mauro William, Balboa Padilla, Leyla Angélica January 2015 (has links)
Public entities such as rural municipalities are overwhelmed by the different challenges that are facing the public. Here is information transparency in the administration control sanctions smaller vehicles (Mototaxis). The main problem is that there does not have a computerized system to manage the control of sanctions, deficiencies in the administration as loss of information, administrative informality, loss of records and consultations in times of infringements. For this problem it has been investigated in different rural Municipal which do not yet have an efficient management control violations; consequently, there are some concerns on the part of the owners of small vehicles for not having a clear and concise imposed against infringements by the municipal inspectors information. However, an important conclusion is that this research project will improve the administration of sanctions on smaller vehicles, reducing street crime (kidnapping), the vehicular traffic informality, improving services to citizens and revenue collection for the municipality; having as main beneficiaries the Municipality of Santa Eulalia, the owners of small vehicles and the district's population.
