Será Huckleberry Finn mesmo um romance racista?: uma análise da obra, de algumas de suas traduções e do discurso racial no século XIX em narrativas sobre escravos sob a luz da Linguística de Corpus / Is Huckleberry Finn really a racist novel?: an analysis of the work, some of its translations and racial discourse in the XIXth century narratives on slaves in the light of Corpus LinguisticsRamos, Vera Lúcia 27 March 2018 (has links)
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), written by Mark Twain (1835-1910), has been frequently in the spotlight. Since it was published, the prohibition to use the book imposed on libraries and schools has been caused by the issues Twain addressed, the dialects he created and his repeated use of the word nigger(s).The translations of Huckleberry Finn have been part of Brazils Translation Literary Polysystem since 1934, when a Portuguese version was published by Monteiro Lobato. Given that Mark Twains work came out more than one hundred years ago, many people have dedicated themselves to studying it in order to discuss its main controversial topics. The purpose of our research is to propose a different manner of analyzing Huckleberry Finns data and four of its translations into Portuguese. To that end, we have chosen Corpus Linguistics (CL) as our work methodology and main approach, because it offers the possibility of investigating a large amount of data by electronic tools (WordSmith Tools, Scott, 2006) which ensures the accuracy of the information presented by the analyst and shows data not detected with the naked eye. Therefore, this research consists of a corpus-driven study grounded in a list of key words, which revealed that the most relevant word was nigger(s) These data have allowed us to set the overall purpose of the study, namely to find out the importance of the word nigger(s) for Mark Twains depiction of the Black characters of Huckleberry Finn in his racial discourse, through our exploration of the racism/slavery semantic field. For that purpose, we found it necessary to search for works in English Literature written in the 19th century (nine narratives on slaves) that also used the word nigger(s). The purpose was to compare those narratives with Twains novel and check for similarities and differences in their construction of racial discourse. Because nigger is a culturally marked word and Brazilian translators use a neuter word to translate it (negro or escravo) we decided to dig into Brazilian works on slavery written in the 19th century (six of them) in order to understand the (in)existence of a word whose semantic content approximates that of the word nigger and to contrast the words used by Brazilian authors against those used by translators. The Brazilian works that we analyzed have revealed a word used to depict Black people, crioulo, which has a negative prosody; however, translators do not use this word, maybe because the standards of Brazils Literary Polysystem, linked to the translations level of acceptability (TOURY, 1995) impose a rewriting in tune with the current politically correct discourse. This PhD dissertation also aims at showing the remarkable contribution of Corpus Linguistics to literary studies, given that concordance lines have allowed us to carry out analyses that would have been impossible if this methodology had not been applied, considering the little time we had for conducting the research (four years), the number of literary works we examined (twenty) and the semantic field, which cannot be investigated with the naked eye.

Traduire, un jeu d'enfants? : Les enjeux de la traduction en suédois d'un livre documentaire français pour enfants / Translating, a child's play? : The issues at stake when translating a French non-fiction book for children into SwedishBrock, Johanna January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to identify and find solutions to some of the difficulties occurring when translating into Swedish a French non-fiction book for children. Solid research has already been done about translating children’s literature. However, these studies often focus on novels and picture books and rarely non-fiction books. The source text used as primary material for our translation and the essay is an extract from the non-fiction book Petites et grandes histoires des animaux disparus, written and illustrated by Damien Laverdunt and Hélène Rajcak and published in 2010 by the French publishing house Actes Sud. The book presents 27 extinct animals and the history about them and their extinction. Basing this essay on research about translating for children, we will begin with an analysis of the skopos – Reiss and Vermeer’s skopos theory about aim and function – of the source and target text, to be able to conceive the translation for our target reader and the socio-cultural and linguistic context in which the reader is living. Monica Reichenberg’s study about different versions of text-books, and their effect on a Swedish child reader’s comprehension including strategies to create a dynamic and intelligible text, will then help us to find the correct translation strategy for our target text. Finally, cultural references and their translation will be discussed considering Venuti’s studies about “domestication” and “foreignization” and Oittinen’s theories about children’s literature and “domestication”. During the essay, the translator’s choices and the motivations behind them will all be discussed taking into consideration the skopos and the linguistic and socio-cultural context of the target reader.

[en] TRANSLATION FOR SUBTITLES: FROM POLYSYSTEMS TO THE TRANSLATOR S SINGULARITY / [pt] A TRADUÇÃO PARA LEGENDAS: DOS POLISSISTEMAS À SINGULARIDADE DO TRADUTORCAROLINA ALFARO DE CARVALHO 20 June 2005 (has links)
[en] The present work was developed in the context of contemporary Translation Studies, in accordance with Post-Structuralist theories in the field of Social Studies. Adopting a critical view that attempts to reunite theory and practice, academy and industry, this study investigates the practice of subtitle translation - seen within the scope of audiovisual translation - based on a systemic and functional perspective. The theoretical and methodological bases are Polysystem Theory and the fundaments of Descriptive Translation Studies, which are here increased and adapted to comprehend the field of audiovisual
translation. Subtitling is then studied from a large-scale context - including the institutions, professionals and proceedings involved in the subtitling of audiovisual materials - and focusing on progressively smaller units: media, technical parameters, syntactic and stylistic norms. Finally, by examining the process of translation in the area of subtitling, this study leads to reflections on the singular dimension of the translator s task - a gap in Descriptive Translation Studies and still little explored in translation theories in general - and to considerations on the possibility of combining the descriptive paradigm with research about the subjectivity intrinsic to translation.

Från Mister Yummy till Herr Mums : Översättning med kommentar: bildspråk i en novell av Stephen King / Mister Yummy becomes Herr Mums : An annotated translation about imagery in a short story by Stephen KingEngström, Elin January 2017 (has links)
This study deals with the translation of a short story written by Stephen King. Prerequisites for the selected translation principle were polysystem theory, descriptive translation studies, intended audience, and the result of a style analysis of the source text in which an abundance of imagery was clear. An analysis of the imagery in the target text found that a predominantly adequacy-oriented translation strategy was used and that Stephen King's status in the target culture can be viewed as high rather than low. Problems during the translation process were mainly associated with the translation of imagery.

Vliv španělského cílového polysystému v česko-španělském překladu ve druhé polovině 20. století / The Influence of the Spanish polysystem on Czech-Spanish translation during the second half of the 20th centuryCuenca Drouhard, Miguel José January 2014 (has links)
Dizertační práce Miguel José Cuenca Drouhard ABSTRACT Key words: translation, Czech literature, 20th century, polysystem theory, censorship, history of translation, Čapek, War with the newts History as a scientific tool contributes in a unique manner to the evolution of mankind, its activities and ideas, because mankind, in contrast to things, is formed by its past. In the field of translation studies, History of Translation is perceived as a valuable instrument for understanding the complexity of translation work, and its importance among creative activities and within society in general. Among theories concerning human activities and translation in particular, polysystem theory is characterised by a descriptive and systemic approach that is rooted in Russian formalism and Czech structuralism. Polysystem theory emphasises the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of systems as opposed to the static, homogenous and ahistorical nature of systems which has wrongfully been attributed to the structuralists. Translation activities and its products are mainly part of the target culture's polysystem, because the translation process culminates in the target culture with the final reception and interpretation of the original work, in which in this phase the repertoire of the target system is incorporated. Sommarborna : En konstprosaisk översättning med kommentar av en skräcknovell av Shirley Jackson / The Summer People : An Artistic Translation with Commentary of a Horror Short Story by Shirley JacksonAttåsen, Micaela January 2021 (has links)
This paper consists of a commented translation of literary fiction from English to Swedish. The translated text is a short story of the horror genre called The Summer People by the American author Shirley Jackson (1916–1965). A source text-oriented translation principle was established for the translation task based on theories such as skopos, polysystem theory and domestication/foreignization. The commentary contains an account for the translational strategies that were applied regarding transfer of culture- and period-specific references, indications of spoken language, and literary style in the source text. An additional minor study was also carried out, consisting of a qualitative comparison between translations of Shirley Jackson’s novels executed by Inger Edelfeldt and Torkel Franzén. The additional study showed that Edelfeldt made slightly more alterations of the text, and Franzén’s translation in particular showed striking similarities to the current translation of The Summer People.

Cognitive Science: комплексный подход : магистерская диссертация / Cognitive Science: an integrated approachПлинер, А. А., Pliner, A. A. January 2015 (has links)
Master's thesis of Pliner A.A. "Cognitive Science: an integrated approach" is devoted to the study of cognitive science as a set of scientific research in various fields of philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, united by a common research interest in the issue of knowledge. The emergence of interest in cognitive science could attributed to the middle of the XX century and related to the work of such thinkers as J. Miller, N. Chomsky, W. McCarthy and others. At the present stage of development, it is time to study the cognitive sciences as systems containing components operating in other systems and having different nature, and they connected with the original system in the complex functional dependence. The aim of investigation is the implementation of an integrated approach to the analysis of the phenomenon of cognitive sciences. The object of study - a cognitive science as a set. Subject of research – a specific complex relationship cognitive sciences and their implementation in a variety of applications. The work consists of four chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the history of the formation of the concept of cognitive science, the second chapter describes the basic methods of the cognitive sciences, the third chapter highlights the major features of complexing cognitive sciences, the fourth chapter builds complex cognitive science as an element of other polysystem.

[en] DIRECT TRANSLATION VS. INDIRECT TRANSLATION: THE CASE OF RUSSIAN LITERARY WORKS IN PORTUGUESE / [pt] TRADUÇÕES INDIRETAS VS. TRADUÇÕES DIRETAS: O CASO DE OBRAS RUSSAS EM PORTUGUÊSCLERIO VILHENA DOS REIS 03 August 2010 (has links)
[en] Direct translations of classic works from the original language have
become a major factor used by the publishing industry to attract the reading
public. Thus, literary works that had originally reached the Brazilian reading
public via indirect translations, primarily from an English or French source text,
are now being rendered into Portuguese directly from Russian originals.
Considering the impact that Russian literature had in the Western world when it
started to circulate in translation in the late 19th century, this thesis focuses on
direct and indirect translations into Portuguese of the work of two great Russian
authors, Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoievsky. The study is informed by
polysystem theory (Even-Zohar 1990) and Descriptive Translation Studies
(Toury, 1995; Lefevere, 1992) and aims, through the analysis of comments
produced by literary theoreticians, scholars, critics, and translators, both to
determine the image of these authors and their respective works - and of Russian
Literature as a whole - that was constructed by these translations and to verify to
what extent the image resulting from recent direct translations from the original
Russian texts differs from that which was produced by indirect renderings.

K počátkům a vývoji českého překladu dětské literatury z angličtiny / Early Stages and Further Development of Czech Translation of Children's Literature from EnglishRambousek, Jiří January 2015 (has links)
The dissertation deals with various aspects of the translation of children's literature from English into Czech, focusing on its earliest stages. The methodology of the research is based on the polysystem theory. It indicates - in agreement with the hypotheses of the theory - that the polysystem of Czech children's literature developed under a strong influence of translation. In the earliest stages, original English texts played a marginal role; they were mostly translated into Czech indirectly via German mediating texts. With the commencement of direct translation at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries, the influence of literary models of English origin became stronger; they enriched Czech children's literature by specific thematic genres, as well as new stimuli of the new conception of imaginative children's literature, which replaced older didactically oriented texts rooted in the tradition of philanthropism. The dissertation also examines bibliographic issues of the analyzed subsystem. It illustrates by examples how the customary enumerative bibliography can be extended to the sphere of textology and yield new findings concerning translated texts (e.g. the identification of the mediating text or the correct form of the translation). The dissertation pays attention especially to texts...
