[pt] O BREVE TEATRO NA CARNE, TRADUÇÃO DE ANGÉLICA LIDDELL / [en] THIS BRIEF TRAGEDY OF FLESH, TRANSLATION OF ANGÉLICA LIDDELLJOAO RICARDO BRAUTIGAM MILLIET 02 May 2022 (has links)
identidade do texto é dada pela relação que se estabelece entre o texto e o tradutor;
[en] This study offers a translation into portuguese of Esta breve tragedia de la
carne, a work by Spanish writer, actress, and theatre director Angélica Liddell (b.
1966). By taking a text which was given for theatrical performance as an object of
translation, it seeks at the same time to contribute to recent debates on Translation
Studies regarding relations between translation and performance, such as those
put forward, with diverse interests, in works by Guilherme Gontijo Flores,
Rodrigo Tadeu Gonçalves, Álvaro Faleiros, and Helena Martins, amongst others.
In joining these debates, this study reads Esta breve tragedia de la carne in
accordance with three basic paradigms. The first one is that the text s identity is
given by the relation established between text and translator; the second is that
this text is taken not as a static original but as a certain number of performances of
itself, the object of translation being these performances, which include its
translations; the third paradigm is that the reading of Esta breve tragedia de la
carne basically prompts actions, or tasks, and that these actions show a specific
conflict between word and body that structures the text s performance. This study,
then, is set forth in three movements. The first consists in enunciating a set of
performances that make up Esta breve tragedia de la carne s text. This set
includes materializations of Angélica Liddell s work and ethics, as well as a
mapping of her reception in Brazil and a description of her own staging of Esta
breve tragedia de la carne, in 2015. The second movement consists in the
execution of three distinct translations into portuguese of Esta breve tragedia de
la carne, each oriented by a different performative program, a composing
procedure devised by Brazilian performer Eleonora Fabião. The third and last
movement is an essay which, while reflecting on performative dimensions of
translation within the Brazilian tradition of translation studies established by
Haroldo and Augusto de Campos, offers an analysis of this study s particular
experiment and seeks to articulate it with broader translation practices in Brazil.

[pt] A TRADUÇÃO TEATRAL ALÉM DO TEXTO: TRADUZINDO THE PITMEN PAINTERS / [en] THEATRE TRANSLATION BEYOND THE TEXT: TRANSLATING THE PITMEN PAINTERSCLAUDIA SOARES ALVARES DA CRUZ 16 May 2022 (has links)
ampliação do tema da tradução teatral aqui colocada também se volta para a cena
teatral brasileira e, para isso, se apoia em abordagens e conceitos da vertente
sociológica dos estudos da tradução. Como ponto de partida para as discussões aqui
propostas, é parte integrante deste trabalho a tradução comentada de The Pitmen
Painters (Os pintores da mina), peça escrita por Lee Hall em 2007, nunca publicada
ou encenada no Brasil. Ao criar um dialeto literário para seus pitmen painters, Hall
impulsiona a presente pesquisa na direção de estudos dialetais nos dois idiomas
aqui contemplados – o inglês de Hall e o português brasileiro da tradução – e,
consequentemente, para estudos relacionados à tradução de variantes linguísticas. / [en] This dissertation contributes to discussions about concepts and practices involved
in the translation of theatrical texts, proposing greater integration between two
fields of knowledge directly related to it: translation studies and dramatic arts.
Theoretical sources from both fields are used, particularly ones that operate at their
points of intersection. With the aim of building on the debate around texts for the
stage and their translation, this dissertation suggests ways of expanding the theatre
experience beyond its linguistic dimension through the use of extratextual elements,
while also proposing closer involvement of the translator with the theatre
production process. This expanded conception of theatre translation is enriched by
an investigation of the Brazilian theatre milieu, drawing on concepts and
approaches derived from sociologically oriented studies of translation. A starting
point for the discussions proposed here and an integral part of the work is an
annotated translation of Lee Hall s 2007 play, The Pitmen Painters, which has not
been published or staged in Brazil to date. The literary dialect Hall creates for his
pitmen painters leads this research toward the study of dialects in both languages
involved here - Hall s English and Brazilian Portuguese – and thereby the
translation of linguistic variants.

Transcreation in Translation : A study of the use and importance of transcreation in the Swedish translations of English marketing slogans / Transkreation i översättning : En studie av användande och relevans av transkreation vid översättandet av reklamslogans från engelska till svenskaNyberg, Linnéa January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores the importance of transcreation in the translation of marketing slogans and how experience is pivotal when translating. The overall aim is to offer an insight into how professional and non-professional translators tackle translation problems in the form of rhetorical devices common to marketing language. The thesis analyses translation strategies and text functions in translations collected from participants with varying backgrounds in translation and show that participants with more experience and/or education in translation take more creative freedom in transferring the source slogans’ messages and functions. The study furthermore conducted a questionnaire with a small test group to gauge the target audience response to the collected translations. The result indicates a preference for transcreated translations over literal translations, highlighting the importance of audience awareness when translating slogans. Overall, the thesis provides insight into transcreative translation’s relevance and highlights the complexity of translation.

Translating Gender and Sexuality in The Awakening by Kate ChopinZhang, Xiaobo 01 September 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis project is comprised of a partial Chinese translation of The Awakening, a translator’s introduction in Chinese for Chinese readers, and an accompanying critical analysis for my translation. My Chinese translation is guided by feminist translation theory. Its central ideas are that translations should expose and redress gender-based prejudices, challenge and subvert male-dominated linguistic and cultural systems, and promote gender equality in cross-cultural communications.
The Awakening is a pioneering feminist novel written by the American author Kate Chopin and published in 1899. It centers on protagonist Edna Pontellier’s gradual departure from her socially conventional roles as a mother and wife and her unfolding awakening to her individuality and sexuality in the late Victorian era. My partial Chinese translation focuses on the gender and sexuality-related excerpts in the novel, which include the depictions of the female body, the Victorian patriarchy, the inner emotions of the protagonist, and the intimacy and sexuality displayed between the protagonist and the male characters in the novel. The translator’s introduction aims to introduce Chinese readers to Kate Chopin and her works and explain the translation interventions I have made in my translation. The accompanying critical analysis discusses my translation approaches and the decision-making process to foreground the feminist themes and convey them to the Chinese readership while preserving the language texture of an English novel from the 19th century in its Chinese rendition.

Translating Arab Cuisine into English: 101 RecipesSalih, Paiman 21 March 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis provides a practical translation of 101 Arabic recipes selected from three cookbooks by the distinguished Egyptian chef and author Osama El-Sayed, plus a long introduction discussing the history of Arab cuisine including cultural and linguistic factors and the translation strategies employed. The cookbooks are entitled Bil Hanna Wa Shiffa, (With Joy and Good Health) 2001; Maa Osama… Atyab, ‘With Osama, Food is more Delicious’[1], 2007; and Al-Halawiyat Al-Sharqiy, (Sweets of Arabia) 2010. I argue that food plays a defining role in shaping a culture and its identity. In general, Arabic recipes have been translated and many gaps exist in terms of adequate cooking terms and processes in English. This study attempts to reduce cross-cultural barriers by translating recipes both well-known Arabic dishes as well as lesser known dishes that also represent values, customs, and traditions important to Arabic language and culture. The study adopts terminology from Venuti’s dichotomy in translation, “foreignization” vs. “domestication” and draws upon both depending upon the circumstances and availability of adequate terms and expressions in English. After following a blended translations strategy, results show that out of 101 recipes, 35 are fully domesticated, 15 fully foriegnized, 19 partially domesticated and partially foreignized, and 32 foreignized with domesticated translations also provided. The last factor in determining the final version was a process of taste-testing. Each step of the translated recipe carefully “proofed” to ensure the edibility and overall quality of the dishes, showing that anyone who can read English can prepare any of the translated texts even with a humble knowledge of cooking.
[1] This title, ‘With Osama, Food is more Delicious’ is my own English translation of the Arabic original Maa Osama…Atyab. The two other books have been published with their English on the Chef Osama El-Sayed’s main website. More details can be found in the following chapters.

Jewish American Writing and World Literature: Maybe to Millions, Maybe to NobodyZaritt, Saul Noam 22 April 2024 (has links)
Jewish literary studies holds a peculiar field position. Although the study of Jewish
American literature has been a part of American literary studies at least since the
famed ‘breakthrough’ of Jewish literature in the postwar years, it often continues to
be treated as a self-enclosed world of its own, apart from both ethnic literary
studies and the larger American literary field.

In this study, we aim to extract and analyze language technologies neologisms from the point of view of translation studies and its related fields, to use these neologisms as a window on the evolution of knowledge about language technologies, and to put the methodology developed as part of the study to the test.
Language technologies hold an important place in translation studies. For the extraction and analysis, we then use a diachronic corpus built from articles published in French and English, from 1966 to 2019, in two translation studies journals, Meta: translators’ journal and TTR: traduction, terminologie et rédaction. We develop an innovative methodology in terminology for the extraction and analysis of neologisms combining the use of an exclusion corpus, a frequency analysis and diachronic word embeddings. Finally, we validate and analyze neologisms based on their concordance and according to Rondeau’s typology (1984). We focus on terms that are part of a bilingual glossary of language technologies that we compiled for this study from specialized works.
The results enable us to describe the neology, in French and English, of language technologies used in translation studies and its related fields. Collected data relate to a variety of fields, events and themes that we analyze, and which provide leads for further analysis. Also, the data point to the similarity of the domain’s neology in both languages and enable us to observe the popularity, trajectory, and stability of neologisms within the corpus. In this way, we offer an innovative perspective on language technologies and its terminology to translation studies and related fields experts.
