Body Builder

Yurga, Emre 18 December 2009 (has links)
My thesis is a critical essay thematically focused on the fate of the body in the postmodern condition. In this thesis a fundamental question is posed: What happens to the (postmodern) body under the double pressure of postmodern technology and culture? Is the postmodern body altered under the pressure of postmodern technology and culture? How contemporary thought and architecture impact the body will also be examined. This thesis discusses the above questions through several key concepts such as exilic conditions, heterotopias and ‘trans’ states of being. After elaborating on these issues, this thesis attempts to design an architectural project “Hamam Complex” on a unique natural island in the Bosporus strait that separates the Western and Eastern worlds.

Veliuonos bažnyčios meno paveldas. Piligrimystės galimybės / The artistic heritage of the Church of Veliuona. Possibilities for pilgrimage

Kilinskienė, Vilma 08 June 2010 (has links)
Veliuonos Švč. Mergelės Marijos Ėmimo į dangų bažnyčioje sukaupta didelė dalis miestelio meno paveldo. Tai vertingi dailės, skulptūrinės plastikos, medžio drožybos, smulkiosios architektūros, auksakalystės kūriniai. Nepaisant to, iki šiol nebuvo atliktas nė vienas išsamus tyrimas, apimantis Veliuonos bažnyčios meno paveldą kaip visumą. Mergelės Marijos paveikslo aptaisų autorystė; d) nustatyti ankstyviausių bažnyčios altorių titulai; e) rekonstruotas ankstyvesnio, 1644 m. konsekruoto titulinio altoriaus vaizdas, atkurti ankstesni visų altorių paveikslų siužetai; f) remiantis šaltinių analize pateikta naujų faktografinių žinių apie XVIII-XIX a. bažnyčioje buvusius iliuzinius altorius; g) pirmą kartą ištirta bažnyčios dailės ikonologija ir apibendrinta ikonografinė programa; h) pirmą kartą atlikta epitafijos J. K. Bžostovskiui teksto semiotinė analizė; i) aptartos stilistinės ir meninės bažnyčios ypatybės; j) pasiūlytos bažnyčios meno paveldo sklaidos visuomenėje... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / St. Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption Church of Veliuona in the town gained a large part of artistic heritage. Vilniaus Verkių Kalvarijų Kryžiaus kelio pamaldumo vieta ir reikšmė Vilniaus Švento Kryžiaus atradimo parapijoje esančiose švietimo įstaigose / Vilnius Verkiai Calvaries Cross Road piety place and meaning of Vilnius Holy Cross discovery in parish situated education institutions

Luomonaitė, Laimutė 31 July 2013 (has links)
Atlikus apklausą atrastas naujas paprotys-Dievo Gailestingumo kultas. / One of Lithuania Catholic church practices of devoutness- calvarias. Calvarias Roads of The Cross are the one of objects of European Catholic religijon history, ethnology and ethnomusicology scien ces. The work is new and original not only because of it‘s theme which was researched for the first time. Verkiai Calvaries have been established in 17th century. The Calvaries were completed in 1669 by the supervision of Dominican monks. They have been constructed exactly following the plan of Jerusalem, with the distances, water bodies and elevations being very close to the original. New chapels were constructed in the 18th century in Baroque style. Verkiai Way of the Cross consists of 22 chapels, 7 wooden and brick gates, and two church ensembles. Almost all stations were completely destroyed in 1962 under the Soviet rule. After regaining the independence the reconstruction was started. Last chapels were rebuilt in 2004. Today the entire complex is reconstructed and is proclaimed an architectural monument of national significance. Vilnius Calvary still today attracts multitudes of pilgrims from all over Lithuania on Pentecost. In 1990, after Lithuania regained her state independence, the restoring of the dynamited by the Soviet authorities Stations of Vilnius Calvary started. The tradition of indulgenced feast of Pentecost was renewed. In 2002, the Cardinal Audrys Juozas Bačkis consecrated all the rebuilt Stations of the Cross.

A cross channel comparison of the illustration of the capital cities in Augustus Charles Pugin's Paris and its Environs and Gustave Doré's London: A Pilgrimage

Quinlan, Andrea Elizabeth January 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents a close comparison of Augustus Charles Pugin's illustrations for Paris and its Environs and Gustave Doré's illustrations for London: A Pilgrimage. This comparison will reveal what is distinctive about each publication. To achieve this, the thesis begins with a consideration of how these illustrated books fit into the oeuvres of the artists and writers involved, and how the works were subsequently received. The thesis then seeks to discover the ways the books adhere to the picturesque and Realist aesthetic modes. A comparison of the representation of social and political issues within the publications reveals how the city is either celebrated or critiqued in them. This is extended by a comparison with other English views of Paris and French views of London. The thesis concludes with the suggestion that the works under consideration are akin to illustrated guidebooks and novels. The illustrations themselves form the primary evidence for this comparison, supplemented by the accompanying written texts and other sources - including contemporary periodicals and biographical material. Paris and its Environs is a significant work within Pugin's oeuvre and shows how he created a view of Paris which would appeal to the tastes and aspirations of his readers. With London: A Pilgrimage, Doré created a view of London which would entertain his English audience but challenge them at the same time.

Vyobrazení zázraků na poutních místech doby barokní / Iconography of Miracles at the Pilgrim Places of the Baroque Period

Káčerek, Roman January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals mainly with iconography of miraculous events at selected places of pilgrimage on the background of their factual history and the overall tradition of certain Marian cults. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of deliberately chosen pilgrimage sites in all cases, with an emphasis on their initial and other specific miraculous events of non-biblical nature concerning primarily the lives of ordinary people. These analyzes provide a basic insight into the general-factographic history of the relevant sites, which is necessary for the detailed examination of the relevant miraculous events. Primary attention is devoted to the analysis of the original miracles of the pilgrimage sites, especially by their depictions. Within the scope of individual pilgrimage sites, this thesis also seeks to analyze all other pictures of the mercy of the Marian. Great emphasis is also placed on written entries of the mentioned miraculous events, which in most cases very probably preceded their picture delineation. The second part of the thesis tries to systemate the results of the researches and compare them with one another. It is a comparison of the miraculous images that are being discussed, which are done mainly in terms of content and in terms of their writing. It is a...

The Miqat of al-Juhfa: a historical and archaeological study

Alsubaie, Mohammad 15 August 2018 (has links)
The Mīqāt of al-Juhfa is located in the west of Saudi Arabia about 187 km northwest of the Holy City of Mecca. Al-Juhfa is one of the five fixed places called Mawāqīt, or entry stations to the pilgrimage (Hajj). These Mawāqīt were designated during the early Islamic period for any pilgrim comes through them with the intention of Hajj. During the early Abbasid period, al-Juhfa was the largest occupied Mīqāt in the Islamic world. This study focuses primarily on historical and archaeological aspects of the Mīqāt of al-Juhfa during the early Islamic period. To illustrate these aspects, the study analyzed many primary sources that mention al-Juhfa in order to reconstruct the historical and cultural development of the site and to establish the extent to which it functions as an urban center. The study benefited from important information provided by these sources in this respect, such as the chronology of the site, its strategic location, topographical features, the nature of the landscape at different times, the function of specific objects, human activities that took place at the site, and factors that led to its prosperity and decline. The study also undertook a fieldwork at al-Juhfa site—primarily archaeological survey and excavation. This fieldwork enabled us to test the results of the textual analysis and to reveal other characteristics of the site (such as its cultural role, urban elements, planning and defences, architectural functions, building technique, building material, and other features). Moreover, the study analyzed both the formal and technical qualities of all archaeological discoveries on the site, comparing them with their analogues at other early Islamic sites in the Middle East. The study derived many results that clearly indicate the great importance of al-Juhfa as an urban center characterized by several urban functions during the early Abbasid period in the late of 8th century until its importance began to decline gradually between the second half of 11th century and the first half of 12th century. This chronology is supported by both written sources and the archaeological evidence. Several architectural elements and a collection of archaeological finds of different pieces of pottery, ceramic, glass, worked stone, and metal were discovered at al-Juhfa. These discoveries provide us with more information about the extent of mutual influence and active interaction between various cultures during pre-Islamic period as well as the high cultural and commercial level achieved by al-Juhfa and the relationship it had with other Islamic sites in the Middle East. / Graduate / 2019-06-26

Implantations, activités et relations des établissements d'assistance en Bourgogne à la fin du Moyen Age / Hospitals locations, activities and relationships, in Burgundy at the end of the medieval times

Simon, Aurore-Diane 30 October 2012 (has links)
The study presented here is the conclusion of an inventory about hospitals having existed on the territory of some dioceses (Autun, Auxerre, Chalon-sur-Saône, Nevers and the south of that of Langres diocese) between XIIth and XVth centuries. Based on the data collected, an atlas of assistance and a directory of sources on medieval hospitals of the study area has been made. The compiled informations proved to be very different but also very heterogeneous. Nevertheless, reflexions were conducted about the characteristics of these hospitals and their relationships with their economic, religious, political and social environments. It revolves around three parts dealing by turns the influence of external factors on the creation and implementation of medieval hospitals, interactions between hospitals with the environments where they are and how are they can be manipulated , and it ends with the parallel evolution of institutions with the support of society and power relations. It shows, among other things, that charity hospitals are landmarks in the medieval landscape, they are importants to the balance of society, but they also have a fonction in the power games and in the expression of the medieval Christian faith.

The findings revealed a system of movement of artefacts that exemplifies how pilgrims use their liquid and solid attachments to objects to relate to God and to saints on four types of itinerary: (1) objects taken to the sacred site; (2) objects used at the sacred site; (3) objects taken back to the pilgrim’s home; and (4) objects taken to the sacred site and then taken back to the pilgrim’s home. The findings have implications for the concepts of solid and liquid attachment in consumption during the movements of pilgrimage / Com base em uma perspectiva interpretativista, foi utilizada uma abordagem etnográfica para investigar o contexto de uma romaria católica no Nordeste do Brasil.
