[en] LITERATURE, HISTORY AND ALEXANDRE HERCULANOS LEGENDS E NARRATIVES / [pt] LITERATURA, HISTÓRIA E LENDAS E NARRATIVAS DE ALEXANDRE HERCULANO

CARLOS ROBERTO PIRES CAMPOS 29 July 2003 (has links)
[en] The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the historical short stories in Lendas e Narrativas, so as to demonstrate, from both historical and fictional points of view, Herculanos attempt to change the Portuguese medieval period into a cultural inheritance, following the romantic artistic project. The second objective is to capture the romantic view of the author, who looked back to medieval times, in order to build a Portuguese cultural identity. The investigation is divided into six chapters, each one emphasizing the function that historical discourse represents in Herculanos fiction. In the light of contemporary theories, the seven narratives are analysed through the discussion of the plots (intrigues), to detect the peculiarities of each one. The emphasis is on the dialogue established between the discourses of Literature and History, within the texts, at the moment of creation. In broad terms, the research concludes that in Lendas e Narrativas the author intended to keep the memory of intense experiences, involving both the Iberian traditions and the transformation of these traditions, which assume the role of producer of new elements. This experience constructs the identity of the basic characteristics of nineteenth century Portuguese literature and even some characteristics of literature in the following century. Reflecting on the question of literary memory in Lendas e Narrativas thus demands the recognition that literary production is a system of dialogues, exchanges and appropriations that are activated by a play of interactive forces. The diversity of characters in the book makes it an intricate weave of historical fiction in the tradition of Walter Scott. The present study intends to contribute to the recognition of this essential work in Portuguese Romanticism and, perhaps ambitiously, to open up perspectives for new research. This continuous movement of interpreting history, renewing its significance, and providing it with different interpretations is a pathway to the discovery of fascinating new readings.

[en] THE QUESTION OF LANGUAGE IN PAUL’S EPISTLES TO THE ROMANS AND CORINTHIANS / [pt] A QUESTÃO DA LINGUAGEM NAS EPÍSTOLAS DE PAULO AOS ROMANOS E AOS CORÍNTIOS

GUILHERME LIMA CARDOZO 06 March 2014 (has links)
[en] The present work aims to investigate in what way Paul makes a perspective of language emerge from the Scriptures, focusing on his Epistles written to the Romans and Corinthians. It is tested the hypothesis that there is a pragmatic perspective of language in these Epistles. Special emphasis is given to two interconnected aspects: the way with which Paul approaches, using metaphors, the presence of metaphors in the Scriptures; and the way that the issue of the unspeakable and the apophatic genre manifest in his Epistles. The analyses of selected passages shows mainly that (a) although there are passages in which metaphor is put in the discourse as a kind of ornament, or lure, as a way of obtaining the understanding and attention of listeners, just as classic Aristotelic theories predict, the Apostle, with the tension between letter and spirit, breaks away from the ideas of the primacy of literalness and intrinsic word meaning, in many occasions where metaphor, considered not only as mere agent of aesthetic or rhetoric impact, appears as a resource that enables an indirect approach to God – which is something that brings Paulo’s perspective closer to later theories of metaphor in which it is taken as a founding phenomenon; (b) in order to approach the theme of the divine, Paul attributes to it the characteristic of ineffability, in accordance with some Greek intellectuals who preceded him; however, in his discourse, the unsayable can part off with the unknowable and be probed by humans, as long as they free themselves from the letter that kills, once only through the spirit men can know God – who is Spirit – face to face; (c) rendering the unspeakable acknowledgeable, through the activity of the spirit, does not mean, unquestionably, making it sayable.

[en] WHAT MAN IS THIS?!: THE DISCOURSE OF FASHION IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW MAN / [pt] QUE HOMEM É ESSE?!: O DISCURSO DA MODA NA CONSTRUÇÃO DO NOVO HOMEM

THIERRY DA SILVA COUTINHO 16 January 2015 (has links)
[en] The present Master Degrees research aims to reflect what is called the New Man, a term used to describe the 21st century Western man, based on the relationship between fashion design and the notion of masculinity in Brazil and Michel Foucault s notion of docile bodies which are constructed from the same. To this end, we investigated the nature of the New Man, the discourse used by the market to characterize him and how it is communicated in the media.

[en] REPRESENTATIONS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSEBOOKS: ANALYSIS OF THE DISCOURSE OF PRODUCERS AND USERS FROM A SYSTEMIC-FUNCTIONAL APPROACH / [pt] REPRESENTAÇÕES DO LIVRO DIDÁTICO DE INGLÊS: ANÁLISE DOS DISCURSOS DE PRODUTORES E USUÁRIOS COM BASE NA LINGUÍSTICA SISTÊMICO-FUNCIONAL

RENATO CAIXETA DA SILVA 22 October 2012 (has links)
[en] This thesis investigates the representations of English language coursebooks that are socially constructed by their producers (authors and editors) and their users (teachers and students). Systemic-functional linguistics and knowledge about representations from Cultural Studies and Social Psychology constitute the theoretical basis of the study, from a view of social construction of reality. More specifically, a semantic-discursive analysis and the grammar of visual design, both based on the systemic-functional theory of language, serve as guides for the discourse analysis. Using these theories, the thesis takes the English coursebook as a genre that is present in Brazilian educational culture and that carries other genres in itself; it is also an object of representation due to its political, economic, cultural and pedagogical relevance in society. Thus, this study presents an analysis of English coursebook producers’ discourse in five separate series, considering three genres written by authors and editors: catalogue advertisements, back cover blurbs and teacher’s manual introductions. The study also analyzes the users’ discourse through 12 interviews with teachers who adopt volumes from these series, and 116 questionnaires answered by their students. The coursebooks are adopted by five different teaching institutions located in Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro. This research is qualitative, characterized by multiplicity, and it uses a constructivist approach in the sense that the explicitness of the representations is expressed in the everyday use of language, which the analytical procedure identifies, categorizes, and systematizes from the recurrent verbal and non verbal elements in the corpus. This is one of the contributions of the research. The analysis indicates that producers and users, in general, represent the English coursebook as a source, an agent, the course, and an attraction. In the coursebook producers’ discourse, guide and facilitator are less recurrent representations. On the other hand, the analysis of the users’ discourse shows that teachers still represent the coursebook as an organizer, a base, a piece of merchandise, and a possibility. Differently from the producers, users (teachers and students), more recurrently, see the coursebook as a facilitator and a guide. The study shows that the same meaning resources, or similar ones, contribute towards the construction of the representations in and through language, and that the representations are themselves inter-related. These meaning resources are ideational, interpersonal and textual ones, and this suggests representations are not limited to ideational aspects of language only. Furthermore, this research also suggests these representations regulate coursebook producers’ and users’ social practices. The pedagogical contributions of the study may be the application of the knowledge produced here for teacher education; a greater awareness of the discourse on the English coursebook that might help in materials evaluation and coursebook selection processes; and a starting point for future investigations on the topic.

[en] AUTHORITIES TURNED ME INTO THIS: NARRATIVES OF ADHERENCE TO DRUG TRAFFICKING AND THE DISCURSIVE CONSTRUCTION OF DEVIANCE / [pt] REALMENTE AS AUTORIDADES VEIO A ME TRANSFORMAR NISSO: NARRATIVAS DE ADESÃO AO TRÁFICO E A CONSTRUÇÃO DISCURSIVA DO DESVIO

LIANA DE ANDRADE BIAR 08 November 2012 (has links)
[en] The present thesis aims at identifying a specific type of discourse about violence: the stories of adherence to drug trafficking, their emergence in the research context and the processes of identity construction resulting from such context. The data presented here comes from field work taken during 2009 in one of the main prison institutions in Brazil. Interviews were made with inmate members of criminal gangs of Rio de Janeiro who attended the prison school. These interviews were then qualitatively analyzed, from a micro-perspective approach, in the light both of the studies on oral narratives, based on interactional sociolinguistics, and of identity studies, especially those which consider narrative discourse as a privileged locus for social identities construction and analysis. Following most poststructuralist theories that dessencialize the concept of identity and bet on its symbolic dimension, the concepts of deviance and stigma are particularly productive in this study and traverse the three foci of analysis proposed. Firstly, following an interactional approach, special attention is given to the mixed meeting between the researcher and her interviewees, privileging the strategies of manipulation and invisibilization of the stigmatizing signs that menaces the interactional balance and the positive presentation of self. Analytical categories such as face work were used to interpret interactional sequences marked by the discursive neutralization of the experience of deviance. Secondly, the analysis describes the structure of narratives of adherence to drug trafficking and focuses on their systems of coherence, i.e., the way sequential ordering and causality relations constructed in these stories relate to culturally established discourses. Therefore, in such narratives, inmates negotiate the extraordinariness of deviance based on systems that explain criminality as related to external factors to individual agency. At last, the third axis of analysis situates prison discourse in the discursive and ideological debate which sustains such discourse, calling attention to the way prison voices position themselves and face, by means of discourse, the common sense thesis about a perverse instinct inhabiting criminals.

[en] PICTUREBOOK AND CLOWN MIME: WORDLESS NARRATIVE? STUDY ABOUT THE NARRATIVE CONSTRUCTION BY IMAGE / [pt] LIVRO DE IMAGEM E PALHAÇO MÍMICO: NARRATIVAS SEM PALAVRAS? ESTUDO SOBRE A CONSTRUÇÃO NARRATIVA POR IMAGEM

MIGUEL SANTOS DE CARVALHO 08 November 2012 (has links)
[en] Research on the visual narrative that has as its object of study the Picturebook. The proposal is an analysis based on the hypothesis of a proximity between the Illustration and the Performing Arts. The choice of Picturebook has a counterpoint in the area of Performing Arts, the Clown Mime. This choice was made because of the similar characteristics between the two objects: the text represented by the absence of verbal language. This approach involves analyzing the picture book from the perspective of textual absence as an alternative to the tradition of critical and theory of narrative that privileges the verbal text.

[en] IDENTITY AND DISCOURSE: ANALYZING THE NARRATIVES OF PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS DURING A RESEARCH INTERVIEW / [pt] TRABALHO, IDENTIDADE E DISCURSO: ANÁLISE DE NARRATIVAS DE PACIENTES PSIQUIÁTRICOS EM ENTREVISTA DE PESQUISA

MARIA TEREZA LOPES DANTAS 14 December 2007 (has links)
[en] The thesis Work, Identity and Discourse: Analyzing the narratives of psychiatric patients during a research interview investigates the construction of identity that emerges from the discursive production of psychiatric patients working at the UFRJ`s Instituto de Psiquiatria (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro`s Institute of Psychiatry). These patients are seen as outpatients and at the daily care center, and take part in work and income generation projects developed at the institution. They function as outsourced workers in activities including hospital reception and data organization at the IT center, besides taking part in artistic creation workshops that include working with music, painting and video. The objective of these projects is to foster the socialization and psychosocial rehabilitation of the hospital`s clientele. I use the discourse analysis standpoint and Interactional Sociolinguistics to examine how these patients develop their stories, how they represent themselves in relation to the way they experience their disease, and the role the aforementioned work plays in their paths; I particularly analyze the evaluations contained in their narratives. The discourse analysis of how the stories are composed shows how complex their topical organization is, with narrative and argumentative units presenting different functions for negotiating meanings and involving the participants in the interaction. The evaluation inherent in these units is an important resource for the verbal expression of the characteristics these patients attribute to their disease and to the work while they develop their identities. By using the anthropological conceptions of individual and person as well as the notion of a post- modern subject derived from Cultural Studies, I also examine how this construction of identity expresses complex value configurations. Concerning the work, we can see how the artistic activity is expressed as a fundamental resource for health recovery; the work, therefore, is defined mainly through its rehabilitative dimension.

[en] ESTUDY DESCRITIVE OF THE USES OF CLITIC LHE IN FORMAL VARIETY PORTUGUESE / [pt] ESTUDO DESCRITIVO DOS USOS DO CLÍTICO LHE NA VARIEDADE FORMAL DO PORTUGUÊS

BRUNO DE ANDRADE RODRIGUES 28 August 2007 (has links)
[en] This work aimed the description of the syntactic- discursive behavior of the clitic pronoun lhe in the formal variety of the written Portuguese modality. Concerned with the investigation of the semantic and syntactic properties of the lhe utilization, the analysis focus on the very separation between the semantic and formal plans, which have been associated in order to determine the syntactic-discursive functions of this pronoun. Our research, of a functionalist basis, was done after the presupposition that the so called indirect object, variety of dative and function typically performed by the lhe pronoun, constitute a heterogeneous and not well defined syntactic function that covers unduly, in the traditional grammar, other dative uses. Therefore, we concluded that the lhe pronoun has got other syntactic- discursive functions pondered neither by the grammar tradition nor by the more recent studies, that can not be assembled under the same label of indirect object.

[en] THE DISPUTE OVER THE WORD CASAMENTO IN BRAZIL / [pt] A PALAVRA CASAMENTO EM DISPUTA NO BRASIL

LUCIANA DA SILVA RIBEIRO 07 November 2012 (has links)
[en] This thesis examines the dispute over the word casament (marriage) in the contemporary debate on the civil rights of homosexual couples in Brazil. It assumes a discursive-pragmatic perspective that focuses on some of the main propositions of Michel Foucault, who, in his work The Discourse on Language, recognized that words translate not only systems of domination, but also, and above all, that by which and for which we fight: instruments of power. This thesis analyzes speeches for and against the institutional use of the word casamento when referring to homosexual couples, in a representative set of recently published texts in print and digital media. A mapping of the main types of arguments used by either side is carried out. The research shows in particular (a) the prevalence of the exclusive religious argument, especially in arguments against the use of the term, (b) the incidence of similar arguments to support opposing viewpoints, (c) the partial convergence between the Brazilian case and the Argentine, Spanish and Portuguese cases (covered in a recent study by Bruno Bimbi) and (d) the ways in which the discussion examined instantiates the internal and external procedures of rarefaction within discourse that Foucault elaborates in the work cited above.

[en] WARRIORS FOR FREEDOM: GENDER AND LIBERATION NARRATIVES ABOUT THE YPJ / [pt] GUERREIRAS PELA LIBERDADE: NARRATIVAS DE GÊNERO E LIBERTAÇÃO SOBRE AS YPJ

THAIS DE BAKKER CASTRO 12 April 2018 (has links)
[en] Our goal in this dissertation is to analyze the ideas of gender (more specifically, of femininity), freedom, and feminine liberation mobilized in different discourses about the YPJ (Women Defense Units). The YPJ are a Kurdish militia, composed by women only, which acts in Rojava (northern Syria), a self-proclaimed Kurdish independent territory since 2012. Rojava s organization is inspired by the precepts of Democratic Confederalism, a political system idealized by Abdullah Ocalan, which advances decentralized governments and women s emancipation as the only way to popular liberation. In the last few years, the YPJ have been gaining more and more attention internationally (especially in western countries), in academic mediums, political collectives, and media vehicles. In that sense, these military women are inserted into different narratives, in different ways, by vehicles as diverse as mainstream international newspapers, Christian media, magazines about female well-being, anarchist media, Kurdish activists, leftist academics, among others. Our aim is to navigate through different representations of these women, in different political contexts, searching for continuities and ruptures relating to the meanings of femininity, the ideals of freedom mobilized, and the relationship of women to these ideals. With that, we seek to understand the processes that allow for different forms of appropriation of the same elements (femininity and freedom) on behalf of different political goals.
