[en] DISCOURSE, EMOTIONS AND AUTHENTICITY IN LEADERSHIP: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY / [pt] DISCURSO, EMOÇÕES E AUTENTICIDADE NA LIDERANÇA: UM ESTUDO EXPERIMENTALLUCAS MARTINS TURANO 22 September 2015 (has links)
[en] Morality, balance of a leader and his positivity, are central theoretical assumptions in the theory of authentic leadership. Taking these assumptions as object of study, this research empirically investigates the impact of authentic principles in the speech of a leader and the expression of emotions in the perception of leadership effectiveness through two experiments. The first study investigated the effect of authentic speech in the judgements of followers from different occupational areas on the leadership. The results indicate that the endorsement of principles of authentic leadership in the speech of a leader influences positively the perception of leadership effectiveness. However, this effect is significantly lower among professionals in Finance and Marketing/Sales areas. The second experiment investigated the influence of the expression of positive and negative emotions in the trials on the effectiveness of a leader who endorse authentic values. The results showed that the negative affectivity expression (sadness/depression) influenced negatively the perception of leadership effectiveness. However, the positive affect expression (happiness/enthusiasm) not influence positively this perception. These findings are discussed to show their theoretical, and, above all, practical implications.

[pt] SEDE DE DISCURSOS: LÓGOS COMO VINHO E OBJETO DE DESEJO NO BANQUETE DE PLATÃO / [en] THIRST FOR SPEECHES: LÓGOS AS WINE AND OBJECT OF DESIRE IN PLATO S SYMPOSIUMJULIA GUERREIRO DE CASTRO Z NOVAES 08 May 2023 (has links)
A hipótese
objeto: enquanto o primeiro consome, intro-verte, o segundo produz, extro-verte.
sabedoria. / [en] Thirst for speeches proposes a reading of Plato s Symposium that follows as
a thread the identification of a metaphor: speech as wine. The hypothesis consists
in postulating a strategic use of this image to describe the nature and the effects of
speech, lógos, as an object and mode of expression of erotic desire, eros. The
dissertation endeavors to map the development of this metaphor based on specific
dramatic and lexical elements, representative of the way the characters act, interact,
and express themselves in the drunken atmosphere of a symposion. Interpreted in
light of this strategy, the Symposium emerges as a dialogue that is not only
concerned with the philosophical conditions of the emission and reception of
discourse, but also has a specific theoretical vocabulary to describe these in
opposition to others. The heuristic and hermeneutic values of the methodology
founded on the metaphor of wine are, precisely, in making explicit and
contextualizing this vocabulary, which opposes, simultaneously, two types of desire
and two types of discursive praxis. Both desires and praxeis are systematized into
two dichotomous pairs: on the one hand, a passive-acquisitive appetitive paradigm
of filling vs. emptying; on the other hand, an active-poietic
erotic paradigm of lack vs. inventiveness. The difference
between them pertains to the posture of the desiring subject vis-à-vis the object:
while the former consumes, intro-verts, the latter creates, extro-verts. In other
words, it is the difference between an appetite for speeches and an eros for wisdom.

[pt] Bala perdida, falas perdidas: o discurso do jornalismo
morte, reconstruindo a
enquadrar narrativamente a
bala perdida que, no entanto, desafia qualquer fechamento
que lhe confira um
sentido. / [en] Stray bullet, strayed speeches: the death of Gabriela
Prado on the
discourses produced by journalism intends to analyze the
idea of the stray
bullet on the urban/social imaginary in the city of Rio de
Janeiro. This paper
begins reading the published press reports about the
death - by stray bullet - of
a female middle-class teenager in 2003. The aim of this
work is to point out how
the idea of chance or unexpected destiny makes the
discourse about the facts
so problematic. This work discuss the way how the
Brazilian press tries to get
around this gratuitous sort of death, rebuilding the
victim´s biography in order to
try to find a causal link that explains the murder.
Threatened with the possibility
of dying in the same way, journalists and audience seem to
delimit the stray
bullet in some types of narratives - although, it is a
challenge to find any
meaning for that.

[en] ISSUES OF POWER AND IDEOLOGY IN INTERPRETING STUDIES AND PRACTICE / [pt] QUESTÕES DE PODER E IDEOLOGIA NOS ESTUDOS E NA PRÁTICA DA INTERPRETAÇÃOCHRISTIANO SANCHES DO VALLE SILVA 04 February 2014 (has links)
[en] Based on the perception that a conflict exists between neutrality and agency in Interpreting, this work tries to verify in what ways the concepts of power and ideology inform both the Interpreting Studies and the interpreter’s activity. A multidisciplinary discussion on power and ideology is presented so that the necessary tools are gathered to examine some cases in which one can clearly observe these concepts within the scope of Interpreting. It can be said that different types of fidelity/faithfulness are established according to influences of the environment and their interaction with the values that inform the interpreter in his/her activity. Issues of ethics and control of discourse by interpreters are addressed, putting into perspective the limits of their occupation and encouraging a critical thinking approach to the role of interpreter and the academic studies which have it as their object.

[en] THE LONG WAY TO DAMASCUS: WEB OF CHANGE AND STREAM OF CHANGE IN NARRATIVES OF RELIGIOUS CONVERSION / [pt] O LONGO CAMINHO ATÉ DAMASCO: REDE DE MUDANÇA E FLUXO DE MUDANÇA EM NARRATIVAS DE CONVERSÃO RELIGIOSAWILLIAM SOARES DOS SANTOS 02 October 2007 (has links)
mudança: a construção
possibilita a (re)construção
[en] In this research the author investigates the construction
of narratives of
religious conversion through the use of interviews. These
narratives are testimonials
of the passage from a bad life condition to a better one,
in which the contrast between
the present and the past is especially visible. In
relation to the process of change, the
narrators indicate that they understand the conversion as
happening in an unexpected
moment of illumination. The narrative analysis points out
that those changes occur
in what the author refers to as a web of change: the
discursive construction of a broad
web of social relations that gives rise to the possibility
of identity (re)construction.
The author also proposes to examine the discursive
production of the conversion
through the notion of stream of change. This notion
indicates that the transformation
of the social identity can´t be located in a specific
point. Although the author has
worked with narratives of religious conversion, he
proposes that these notions can be
used in the study of narratives concerned with other types
of conversion, since one of
the central characteristics of such narratives is the
emphasis upon the transformation
of identity.

[en] A THING SUCH AS THOU: THE REPRESENTATION OF BLACK CHARACTERS IN BRAZILIAN TRANSLATIONS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE / [pt] A THING SUCH AS THOU: A REPRESENTAÇÃO DOS PERSONAGENS NEGROS NAS TRADUÇÕES DAS OBRAS DE WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE PARA O PORTUGUÊS DO BRASILMARCIA PAREDES NUNES 09 October 2007 (has links)
ideologias.
medida as versões acabam
por reconstruir, intensificar ou atenuar o preconceito
percebido na obra original. O
corpus de análise é constituído por The Merchant of
Venice, juntamente com três
traduções brasileiras, feitas por Carlos Alberto Nunes,
Cunha Medeiros/Oscar
Mendes, e Barbara Heliodora; Titus Andronicus, e as
Carlos Alberto Nunes, Cunha Medeiros/Oscar Mendes,
Péricles Eugênio da Silva

Melville. / [en] The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Brazilian
translations deal with
Shakespeare`s black male characters: The Prince of Morocco
in The Merchant of
Venice, Aaron in Titus Andronicus and Othello. The study
is based on the
assumption that racial prejudice is an ideological
construct, mediated by language,
and that translation as a discursive mode may play an
important role in the
reproduction of ideology. The research was conducted in
three steps: (i)
identification of instances of racist discourse in the
source text; (ii) identification
in the target text of the translated instances of such
racist discourse; (iii) analysis
of these translations and the general effect they may have
on the different end
products, so as to verify whether the Brazilian versions
reconstruct, intensify or
mitigate the prejudice identified in the original work.
The plays examined were
The Merchant of Venice, and three Brazilian translations
by Carlos Alberto

Titus Andronicus,
in renderings by these same translators; and Othello, as
translated by Onestaldo de
Pennafort, Carlos Alberto Nunes, Cunha Medeiros/Oscar

Durkheim´s theory with the kind of treatment given by the
contemporary press to
the people who kill themselves. The features about the
subject published in O
Globo newspaper in 2004 has been re-read, bearing in mind
the concepts of
egoism, altruism and anomy. It has been tried to establish
as well how the
language used relates itself with the social behaviours
that are previous and
external to the creation of the own texts.

[en] CONTROL IN THE NAME OF PROTECTION: CRITICAL ANALYSES OF DISCOURSES ABOUT INTERNATIONAL TRAFFICKING OF PERSONS / [pt] CONTROLE EM NOME DA PROTEÇÃO: ANÁLISE CRÍTICA DOS DISCURSOS SOBRE O TRÁFICO INTERNACIONAL DE PESSOASCAROLINE AUSSERER 25 July 2007 (has links)
[pt] Este trabalho analisa o funcionamento, as ambigüidades e
as implicações
foucaultiano. Assim, a
pesquisa visa a desconstruir estes discursos para, deste
modo, problematizar
as práticas políticas atuais que se baseiam
prevalentemente neles, e para
possibilitar uma compreensão mais diferenciada do assunto
complexo de
tráfico humano. / [en] The present thesis analyses the working, the ambiguity and
the political
implications of contemporary discourses about trafficking
in persons. Three
examples were chosen to illustrate the most common
interpretation of the issue:
trafficking as a problem of organized crime, as a moral
concern and as a
question of migration. Based on concepts of Michel
Foucault, the main focus of
the investigation is the interplay between the
establishment of regimes of truth
by the discourses and their productivity. Depending on the
definition of the issue
there are different ways that claim to resolve the
question. The work
challenges the common understanding of strategies against
trafficking
developed in the name of protection of the victim and
furthermore elaborates
that these discourses are used to install mechanisms of
control in Foucault´s
sense. Thus, the investigation aims at deconstructing
these discourses in order
to highlight the problems of current anti-trafficking
policies and therefore
enables a more differentiated understanding of the complex
topic of human
trafficking.

[en] THE CONVERSATIONAL HUMOR IN TALK IN INTERACTION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSES / [pt] O HUMOR CONVERSACIONAL NA FALA-EM-INTERAÇÃO EM AULAS DE LÍNGUA INGLESAKARIN RANGEL TERRA 12 January 2009 (has links)
[pt] O presente trabalho busca investigar o papel do humor
participantes do contexto pesquisado.
A principal
[en] This study investigates the role conversational humor plays
in na English language classroom, in which the researcher
was also the teacher. The research orientation is
qualitative and interpretative, and the theoretical basis
lies on Interactional Sociolinguistics, Conversation
Analysis and theories of humor, in order to analyze data
constituted by audio-taped classes and field notes. A
sociointeractional discourse analysis was done, based on
the construct of conversational play frame and intends to
notice how these frames are initiated and ended and how
they influence social construction of knowledge and the
relation established between the participants of the
investigated context. The conversational play frames may be
initiated and ended not only by the teacher,
but also by the students, which demonstrates the influence
of the flexible style of the teacher in the humor use in
the classroom. The results show that conversational humor
is essential to promote involvement and to reduce
asymmetry between the participants, and is also an
auxiliary in the social construction of knowledge in the
target language. The main contribution of this
study is the understanding of the role conversational humor
plays in classroom interactions, resulting in a better
comprehension of the interactions that occur in
the educational context.
