The North House as Component Based Architecture

Doesburg, Chloe 17 February 2010 (has links)
The North House is a proof-of-concept prefabricated solar powered home designed for northern climates, and intended for the research and promotion of high-performance sustainable architecture. Led by faculty at the University of Waterloo, the development and design of the project involved a broad collaboration between faculty and students at the University of Waterloo, with Ryerson University and Simon Fraser University. The North House prototype competed in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon in October of 2009. This thesis identifies the North House as a component-based building. It illustrates in detail the components of which the house is composed, the sequence by which they are assembled, and the details that allow for the building’s rapid assembly and disassembly. Finally, the thesis explores the possibilities afforded by componentbased architecture including adaptability, off-site fabrication and demountability. Drawing on this, the thesis projects future ways of designing buildings sustainable to both manufacture and operate.

The buzz: supporting extensively customizable information awareness applications

Eagan, James R. 25 August 2008 (has links)
Increasingly abundant access to data and cheaper display technology costs are creating an exciting opportunity to create new information awareness tools that can present information calmly through peripheral and ambient interfaces. These tools offer the potential to help people better manage their attention and to avoid information overload. Different people, however, have distinct information needs, and customizing these systems is often difficult. Existing interfaces typically provide too coarse or too fine a granularity of customization, resulting in tools that are too rigid or too difficult to configure. We present an extensively customizable information awareness system, The Buzz, that supports end users, tinkerers, and developers at using, modifying, creating, and sharing powerful and flexible customizations. These customizations are powerful in the sense that the user can control abstract behaviors of the system, and flexible in the sense that the complexity of the customization can vary with the power needed to express it. We further chart the broader information awareness customization space through the lens of existing customizable information tools. Through this analysis, we show that this system provides more extensive customization capabilities than other customizable awareness applications, without requiring significant programming.

Digitala verktyg och kompetensutveckling i matematikundervisning : En kvalitativ studie om lågstadielärares användning av digitala verktyg och deras uppfattningar om kompetensutveckling i förhållande till den reviderade kursplanen i matematik / Digital tools and professional development in mathematics education : A qualitative study of the use of digital tools in teaching mathematics, and teachers' professional development in relation to the revised syllabus in mathematics

Brottsjö, Sofia January 2018 (has links)
Our society is constantly changing. At the beginning of the last century there was industrialization that accounted for the great change, today it is digitization. As part of increased digitalization in schools, the curriculum has been revised to clarify the school's mission in strengthening students' digital skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers use digital tools today in mathematics education and what perceptions exist about the need for skills development to teach, based on the revised curriculum. In order to answer the purpose of the study, qualitative interviews have been conducted, with ten teachers from three schools. The result shows that all teachers today use digital tools in mathematics teaching and that they mainly use digital tools to vary teaching and increase student motivation. Furthermore, the result shows that the most common areas of use for digital tools in mathematics education are at digital reviews, for skills training, for deepening and for personalization. Although all teachers today use digital tools, the result shows that among the majority of teachers there is an uncertainty and skills development need, to feel safe in teaching based on the revised curriculum. The result also shows that digital skills and interest in digital technology seem to have a strong connection.

No. of bitstreams: 1 6616.pdf: 3224245 bytes, checksum: 3bea5c064e483543e0961a78c51613d2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-10-20 / Software as a Service (SaaS) represent a form of software distribution on demand and accessible via the Internet. The development of SaaS enables service users (tenants) to benefit from the low cost of deployment and maintenance. The Multi-Tenant (MT) architecture is often used in the development of SaaS, it allows the sharing of software and hardware resources, providing cost savings to the costumers and the service provider. A challenge that the SaaS developer has is to keep sharing the instance of the software in scenarios with tenants who have differing needs. In this project, to address the variability of tenants in SaaS MT were set some patterns, based on Software Product Lines techniques for customizing user interfaces, data, processes and permissions. A framework called FoSaaS (Framework of Software as a Service) has also been developed to support the use of patterns, providing support to developers in SaaS MT coding. In addition to allowing the customization of SaaS MT, experiments in this project indicated that patterns improve reuse, quality and productivity in developed SaaS MT. The applicability of the patterns was evidenced through real projects in developing commercial applications.

SLESS 2.0: an evolution of the Scrum and Lean Six Sigma integration approah for mobile applications / SLESS 2.0: uma evoluÃÃo da abordagem de integraÃÃo do Scrum e Lean Six Sigma para aplicaÃÃes mÃveis

Thiago Ferraz Vieira da Cunha 29 August 2014 (has links)
The software development for mobile devices such as mobile phones, smartphones and tablets requires knowledge not only of processes but also related to software and hardware technology platforms of these devices. Continuous improvement in the performance of these platforms and the increasing demand for a variety of applications require a high competitiveness and, therefore, high levels of productivity and quality. In this scenario, agile methodologies are used and fit well to frequently changing requirements and to time to market. Among these methodologies, Scrum is one of the most accepted and used, contributing to the improvement of project management, team productivity, product quality and increasing the probability of project success. On the other hand, there is an increasing adoption of quality management methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma in Information Technology and Communication (ICT) organizations due to their proven results in improving processes development and quality of services and products developed. Methodologies such as Scrum and Lean Six Sigma have different goals, however, they can contribute together in the development of software for mobile devices. In literature, there are studies that propose the integration of agile methodologies and software quality, however, they have gaps regarding the possibility of systematic reuse of this integration, as well as in evaluating the use of these integrated methodologies. Thus, this paper proposes an evolution of an existing approach, called SLeSS, that integrates Scrum to Lean Six Sigma and has been used in the software customization for mobile phones. The evolution of this approach is to add software development in addition to customization and improve integration mechanisms initially proposed with a focus on evaluation of the practices and principles of Scrum from the use of techniques of Lean Six Sigma. This new version is applied in seven actual projects that are related to software development and customization for mobile devices and their results are also discussed in this dissertation.

One of the consequences is the lack of consumer confidence in exposing their personal data in the online environment, which in turn, impacts the capacity of the e-commerce. One of the possible solutions pointed out by several scholars to manage the dilemma is to search for solutions that balance individual privacy and the needs for information disclosure. As part of this path, which looks for the meaning and value of privacy nowadays, are studies of typology, which, though numerically small — especially in the online environment — represent the efforts to arrive at a conceptualization of what is the nature of private. The typologies allow developing strategies and solutions in tune with the many social demands. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to replicate a particular model of privacy typology in Brazil. The choice fell on a study of Sheehan (2002), developed and tested in the U.S. environment. Translating the model to a group of 190 individuals in Brazil, we found that among the four studied variables (gender, age, education level and family income), only age was significant for privacy, with little more than 20% of variability. The level of education, which proved influential in American Internet users, did not show any relevance between the Brazilians. The differences in results can be attributed to several factors, with emphasis on the role played by cultural systems. Future studies should pursue such discrepancies to meet the challenge of privacy in the virtual field and benefit both individuals and the e-commerce.
