Teacher learning during the implementation of the Index for Inclusion in a primary school

Oswald, Marietjie M. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Educational Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was designed to explore affordances and constraints to teacher learning as workplace learning during a time of change as initiated by the Index for Inclusion process. In particular the study investigated features on the macro-social and macro-educational level that impact on teacher learning in the workplace and the affordances and constraints to teacher learning that could be identified on the institutional-community plane as the pivotal plane of analysis for this study. It also explored features on the personal plane that impact teacher learning in the workplace. The theoretical framework of cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) provided a broad platform from which to engage with the study. In particular, the work of Engeström, as a contemporary contributor in the field of CHAT, informed this study. The investigation into teacher learning in the workplace during a time of change was designed as a critical ethnographic study and was conducted in a primary school in a disadvantaged community in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. A qualitative methodology was employed. The study allowed for a critical in-depth analysis of affordances and constraints to teacher learning in the workplace by making use of an abductive process of data analysis and presentation, which implies a movement between an inductive and deductive process of knowledge creation. The data was presented in broad themes, an ethnographic narrative using the triangular structure of activity as developed by Engeström, and in pen sketches depicting the learning trajectories of two teachers. The data revealed that the Index for Inclusion employed as tool of change in this study did indeed allow for teacher learning for inclusion in the workplace. It raised awareness of inclusive education, contributed to a shared language for inclusion in the school and created the platform for teachers to engage with own attitudes and practices in a safe and supportive environment. Certain teachers attested to significant learning gains. However, the study also highlighted how a school could act as a restrictive environment for teacher learning and the complex processes involved in changing such an environment to become more expansive in support of teacher learning for inclusion. Several factors acted as severe constraints to teacher learning. On the macro-social level, poverty and the consequences of apartheid in South Africa acted as significant constraints to expansive teacher learning. With regard to the macro-educational level, teachers struggled with innovation overload and the absence of meaningful training and support for change that negatively affected their morale, motivation and self-efficacy. On the institutional level the leadership approach in the school proved particularly detrimental to expansive teacher learning. Teacher cognition, attitude and emotion also constrained their own engagement with the learning opportunity afforded by the Index for Inclusion process in the school. The students were not allowed a platform for their voices to be heard. Furthermore, neither their parents nor the community was invited into collaborative partnerships with the staff. On the personal level the study engaged with the possibility that individual teachers could gradually bring the necessary changes into the school on the grounds of their own positive learning experience through the Index for Inclusion process. The hope for change in the school was thus embodied in individual teachers’ agency, energy and incentive to work towards sustaining the progress that had been made by means of the Index for Inclusion process in the school. Keywords: teacher learning, workplace learning, inclusive education, Index for Inclusion, culturalhistorical activity theory (CHAT). ’n Kwalitatiewe metodologie is gebruik. Sleutelwoorde: onderwyser-leer, leer in die werksplek, inklusiewe onderwys, ‘Index for Inclusion’, kultureel-historiese aktiwiteitsteorie.

The relationship between adult learner self-directedness and employability attributes : an open distance learning perspective

Botha, Jo-Anne 03 July 2014 (has links)
This study investigated the relationship between the self-directedness (as measured by the Adult Learner Self-Directedness Scale) and employability attributes (as measured by the Student Employablity Attributes Scale) of adult learners enrolled at a South African distance learning higher education institution. Correlational and inferential statistical analyses were carried out in order to realise the research objective. A stratified random sample of 1 102 mainly black and female participants participated in the study. The research indicated self-directedness to be a significant positive predictor of employability attributes and also revealed significant differences between the gender, race and age groups regarding these variables. Recommendations are suggested for use by university lecturers and human resource development professionals. / Human Resource Management / M. Comm. (Human Resource Management)

To Learn or not to Learn Digital Competence

Lilja, Moa-Kajsa, Lindkvist, Ann-Catrin January 2022 (has links)
This study examines which areas within digital competence that are considered important at Stena AB. Further, this study examines what incentives and hindrances that exist for learning in digital competence. The aim for this thesis is to evaluate a method and process for working to increase digital competence in companies and to find out the incentives and hindrances that exist to motivate a learning process in the area. A case study including a workshop inspired by intervention research, as well as qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with a number of employees at Stena AB. The transcribed interviews were analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. The results were interpreted through a socio-cultural perspective on learning with discussion and dialogue in focus. Analysis of the results indicate that the participants considered a critical and communicative ability is important in digital competence, both as a citizen and as an employee at Stena AB. The results suggest that a discussion-based workshop on the concept of digital competence could contribute to the participants' understanding of digital competence and provide perspective on how others view the same concept. In terms of incentives and hindrances to learning in digital competence, these differ from individual to individual. Hindrances to learning are areas such as the environment and conditions that are beyond one's control, but also an unawareness of what knowledge needs to be developed. The conclusion is that the company needs a combination of both informal and formal education, that digital knowledge and abilities can be prioritized which are interpreted as focus areas for the learning process to increase digital competence. Furthermore, incentive forces and obstacles are identified as a strategy for a learning process in digital competence. The conclusion is estimated to be applicable to other companies in other contexts as well.

Skills development learning programmes and the development of emotional intelligence competencies

Jali-Khaile, Nomveliso Beatrice January 2015 (has links)
This study investigated whether skills development learning programmes specifically internship programme in the public service sector are effective in improving interns’ emotional intelligence competences. A convenience sample of 66 interns was obtained. The interns, two peers and a mentor assessed the intern’s emotional intelligence competencies twice, at the beginning and towards the end of the internship programme with the aid the 360° Emotional and Social Intelligence Inventory (ESCI). A total of 264 participants completed the inventory. Mean competency ratings were compared to determine if there were differences between the first and the second assessments. There were statistically significant differences for Organisational Awareness, Adaptability, Influence, Teamwork, Empathy, Emotional Self Awareness, Conflict Management and Inspirational Leadership. No statistically significant differences were found in the overall development of emotional intelligence based on gender. However, female interns improved more in Emotional Self-Awareness while males improved more in Inspirational Leadership and Coaching. Skills development internship learning programme in the public service appear to be effective in furthering interns’ emotional intelligence competencies at work. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology with Specialisation in Research Consultation)

Chefer som pedagogisk och hälsofrämjande resurs i förändringsarbeten : En kvalitativ studie kring chefers upplevda förutsättningar för att skapa Healthy workplace / Managers as a pedagogic and health promoting resource in process of change : A qualitative study on managers’ experienced prerequisites to create a Healthy workplace

Svarfvar Kristiansson, Jesper, Fridh, John, Jakobsson, Marina January 2020 (has links)

Bank, Volker, Glaß, Chistiane 29 November 2017 (has links)
Devenir maître d'apprentissage : configurations et affordances pour construire sa pratique tutorale en entreprise / Become a workplace tutor : configurations and affordances to build a tutorial practice in the workplace

Peycelon, Marine 28 November 2018 (has links)
This research focuses on workplace tutors in dual vocational tertiary courses, and how they begin in this role. In France some tutor’s training are offered but they are short-term (1 day) and few tutors participate. Institutional requirements remain vague with little mention mention of the workplace tutors. Therefore, it seems that a large part of tutors are learning this activity « on the job ». Our purpose is to understand how workplace tutors are learning their role, and in particular, how interactions and relationships they have with other actors (from the shool, the company, etc.) help them to build their practice of tutoring. This research is based on a one-year fieldwork and a corpus characterized by a multiplicity of data production modes (participating observations, audio and video recordings, interviews, document collection, etc.). It takes the form of three case studies whose aim is to understand how a tutorial configuration is set up (according to Elias, 1981) and how this configuration creates affordances (Billett 1995, 2011), i.e. learning opportunities for the novice workplace tutor, which he can take advantage of to build his practice. An analysis of the institutional requirements on tutoring and the role of the workplace tutor, leads us to show that he occupies a secondary place in speeches that are rather focused on the apprentice and addressed to them or to employers. In addition, this requirements are made at several levels (from law to school) and this constitutes a myriad (millefeuille) of requirements that remain vague and heterogeneous. Finally, it is a relatively fixed tutorial configuration, including only three actors (apprentice / MAP or employer / school-tutor or school) that is most of the time presented. The analysis of our cases is carried out by crossing two levels: the local level and the global level. On the one hand, it is a question of understanding the recurrent interactions and relationships that are established over time and, on the other hand, the way in which actors interact and coordinate themselves in local interactions and situations. This allows us to document how a tutorial configuration emerges and is implemented over time, but also how it is locally consolidated or disrupted. These analyses allow us to highlight that where we are used to thinking of a tutor-apprentice duo, there is in reality a network of actors with various profiles, objectives and characteristics that is created in order to support the apprentice. This tutorial configuration is dynamic and changes according to the context. It can be made up, in addition to the apprentice and his tutor, by actors in the workplace (hierarchy, colleagues, etc.), actors in the school (school-tutors, teachers) or actors in the family, friends, etc. Each actor in this configuration has its own purposes that contribute to orienting its implementation and evolution over time. Our analyses show that this evolution can be in favour of the tutor's appropriation of his role. The configuration is, in fact, agenerator of affordances for the novice workplace tutor, which he can take advantage of in order to develop his tutoring practice. These affordances can take various forms (direct support, inclusion in a tutoring collective, exchanges on tutoring practice, etc.). They are only actualized as resources because the novice tutor takes them over, making them relevant to his or her practice. In addition to documenting the training practices of tutors, this research aims to support the apprentices training center (Formasup ARL) in the engineering work of the training courses they are currently conducting.

Kunimodellen : En utbildningsmodell för signaltekniker på Roslagsbanan / The Kuni model : An education model for signal maintenance technicians at Roslagsbanan

Kuniholm, Johanna January 2019 (has links)
To be able to find and solve signal failures in Roslagsbanan in Stockholm, it is important that the maintenance technicians working with the signalling system has the right knowledge and feel confident with how the system works. One part of the safety system at Roslagsbanan is called ATC (automatic train control) which sends information to the train driver about where adjacent trains are located and how upcoming signals, switches and road crossing barriers are set. The ATC also interferes by applying brakes if the driver does not stop at a stop signal. To make troubleshooting of the ATC system more efficient, the company maintaining the signalling system, tracks and power supply at Roslagsbanan, Strukton Rail AB, would like to further educate their maintenance technicians. They want a model for training sessions in troubleshooting that can be used with training equipment and can be applied to other technical systems. To create this model my research questions were ”What could a pedagogical model for troubleshooting education on the safety system ATC at Roslagsbanan look like? How does the model affect the participants’ activity compared to other education sessions in the railway business?”. It was important to Strukton that participants should be active and cooperate with each other during the session. After reading about the sociocultural perspective on learning, accelerated learning and workplace learning and also conducting interviews with two technicians at Strukton and two teachers in other parts of the railway business to hear what they value as good education, I created an educational model for in-service training of the signalling system ATC, named the Kuni model. The model is based on participants solving troubleshooting cases together. An education session starts with an overview of the system that can vary in detail depending on the participants’ previous knowledge. Then the participants solve cases by discussing in groups and agreeing on a plan on how they should troubleshoot, and then try their plan on the test equipment where the error is planted. Depending on their need for education and the available time, they can get a different number of cases on different levels, but the cases should try to cover as many of the system’s components as possible. At the end of the session there is time for reflection where the participants tell each other what they have learnt. To get a measurable indication of if the participants have learned anything, they fill out a questionnaire just before and just after the education with questions on how confident they feel troubleshooting the different components. Two such sessions were held with the Kuni model, each with two cases to solve, for a total of seven participants. To measure participant activity, I filled out an observation form for 20 minutes per hour where I registered whether each participant had spoken or not for 40 intervals of 30 seconds each, which I also did at two other training sessions that signalling technicians attend to get a control group. Additionally, I conducted group interviews with the participants after the sessions to see what they thought of the model and what could be improved. The results from the interviews show that the participants were content and thought it was a good model to work with, but that some technical information about the test equipment that exists in the real world was missing. They also wanted more detailed information in the initial overview with focus on, among other things, why the ATC system exists. The participants’ self-estimated confidence in troubleshooting increased after the session, but they were not significantly more active during training with the Kuni model than the control groups. The Kuni model itself did not change very much between sessions.
