Representaciones de Figuras Feministas en la Muestra Despierta!

Lane, Kathryn 01 May 2008 (has links)
English: Elizabeth Waltenburg is a contemporary Argentine artist. In her show, “Wake Up!”, the oil on canvas works represent women, children and animals on strange and depressed backgrounds. She uses the symbolism of feminine and animal figures to comment on contemporary feminism. She works in a complex era marked by feminism, post-feminism, criticism of both schools and a system of global communication. Her work incorporates elements from all the issues above. This thesis discusses her work in the context of the history of representation of women, children, and animals in order to arrive to a better comprehension of the kind of work she does.

The evaluation of contemporary art with art historical and market criteria : the 3C Model

Richter, Till Florian Alexander 25 January 2012 (has links)
For the most recent contemporary art no art historical or price records exist that can testify of its value. However, the market for contemporary art is enormous and the art historical interest in it is equally important. If we can find out how to evaluate contemporary art, it will further the art historical understanding, the market transparence and the sales of contemporary art thus having an influence also on the creation of art (William Grampp). The art historical verdict and the market verdict are linked. This has been proven by a number of economists (Frey, Galenson, Grampp). The question is how they are linked. Basically, both art history and the market contribute to the creation of value in art. What is it that makes art valuable? What are the criteria used in art history and in the market to evaluate art? The focus is on European and US American art between 1970 and today. Evaluation, be it aesthetic or financial, is a process of decision making. Decisions are based on criteria that must be conscious at least after the decision is made (Clement Greenberg). In the art world, certain decision makers are more influential than others. Therefore the dissertation analyzes the most influential positions in art theory and in the art market and distills the essential criteria used. The dissertation seeks to advance the research on this fundamental question of the evaluation of art through a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary study than those previously undertaken. It presents a model that integrates the most important criteria from both sides and allows a more reliable evaluation of contemporary art. The 3C Model explains the ensemble of Quality-Value-Price through three criteria: Change, Connectivity and Context (Time, Space, People). The 3C Model can be used as a general basis in the discourse on value and quality. It is a structural method that can be applied to almost any art from any period. The model is exercised here using Gerhard Richter, François Morellet, Julian Schnabel, Jeff Koons, Sophie Calle and Pipilotti Rist as examples. / text

Morfologinės struktūros transformacijos centriniame miesto rajone (Lietuvos pavyzdžiu) / Transformations of Urban Morphological Structure in the Central Business District (On the example of Lithuania)

Alistratovaitė, Inesa 23 February 2005 (has links)
As urban development in the 20th century has become the issue of global concern, more and more new territories have been occupied due to high intensity of the development. International conferences devoted to the regulatory issues of city development held within the current decade (such as HABITAT II held in Istanbul, 1996, ATHENS’98 – in Athens, 1998, URBAN 21 – in Berlin, 2000, and a conference in Brussels, 2001, etc) emphasized the majority of developmental aspects including the great focus on the necessity to further form urban structures with the priority of internal city development looking for more effective and more universal functional uses of the territories, restoration of the existing downtown areas and preservation of their original character. As other post-soviet countries, Lithuania has been also facing the need to reorganize various spheres including urban development. Urban territories have been dangerously expanded, especially during the soviet period, due to the increased general city building-up areas, mostly expressed by the territorial expansion rather than gradual and consistent development (by the use of internal reserves of the city). After the restoration of Lithuanian independence, privatisation, changed character of housing construction, return of land and real estate to the previous owners and increasing value of land under the free market conditions remarkably modified the nature of urban development in Lithuania, at the same time revealing the... Postmodernizmo architektūros privatūs gyvenamieji namai Lietuvoje / Postmodern single-family houses in Lithuania

Galaunytė, Aistė 21 June 2013 (has links)
Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjama postmodernizmo stiliaus raiška privačiuose gyvenamuosiuose namuose Lietuvoje, nuo XX a. 9 dešimtmečio vidurio iki 10 dešimtmečio pabaigos. Darbo apimtis – 92 p. teksto be priedo, 57 iliustr., 9 schemos, 99 bibliografiniai šaltiniai, 3 priedai. / The goal of Master thesis is to investigate expression and features of postmodern style of private dwelling-houses of Lithuania, from the middle of the 9th decade to the 10th decade of the twentieth century. In order to reveal the characteristics, features and cultural significance of the style in Lithuania, the private dwelling-houses of postmodern style of the Western world (the U.S., Western Europe, Japan) are analyzed, as well as conditions which prompted their development. The paper discusses that the social, political and economic factors of Lithuania at that time, led to the suspicion and critical evaluation of postmodern architecture in general. It is assumed that due to the political-economical factors, the Western magazines were one of the main tools for Lithuanian architects to get to know postmodern architecture. Therefore, a comparative analysis between private dwelling-houses published in foreign periodicals, and of Lithuania, is conducted. Consequently the most common features of private dwelling-houses of postmodern style in Lithuania and their links with Western architecture are determined. Houses of Lithuania of high quality postmodern architecture are named, their valuable properties are defined. Thesis consists of: 92 p. text without extras, 57 pictures., 9 schemes, 99 bibliographical entries, 3 appendixes included.

A VANITAS EM OBRAS DE ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA: UM ESTUDO ICONOGRÁFICO

Witeck, Ana Paula Gomes 30 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This Master Degree Thesis aims to identify how a small set taken from a series of contemporary artworks, considered by some authors as "contemporary Vanitas" is characterized formal, symbolic and thematically, delving to evidence how the today s art can incorporate its historical past and especially the Vanitas traditional theme. The study, using an iconographic approach based on the method of Erwin Panofsky, primarily noted that the analyzed group of artworks, besides incorporating other themes with that of traditional Vanitas, showed a great formal distance from the ancient Vanitas paintings. The survey also verified that these artworks do not take the traditional Vanitas only by displaying the same symbolic motifs of the theme, but in fact, by the apprehension of its idea, which can be summarized as the confrontation between the man's vanity and the transience of his earthly life.

Fernando Augusto Oliva 04 August 2017 (has links)
The interest of this thesis lies in the persistence of the question of Brazilian art in the criticism produced by Frederico Morais (Belo Horizonte, 1936) in three distinct periods of his production, which I have named, according to the behavior of his discourse, as \"Contestation\" (1966-1973), \"Doubts\" (1974-1984) and \"Conciliation\" (1985-2012). The starting point resides in the debate formulated around the definition of what Brazilian art is, which emerged in the nineteenth century -- although it had already been delineated in literary terms in the previous century --, a debate that changed over time, kept alive in discussion throughout the following century. In this context, the thesis aims to identify the survival of this question of the national in Morais\' production. It also proposes to show -- through texts published in the press, but also in chronologies, manuals and \"encyclopedias\" -- how he makes constant use of historical revision to keep the discussion relative to Brazilian art on the agenda of public debate. In Chapter 1, I analyze his first period, characterized by the assertive and militant discourse adopted in defense of Brazilian art as a privileged space for experimentation, resistance and, above all, for the avant-garde. In his view, this movement was based in Rio de Janeiro, expanding from the former capital to the rest of the country. In Chapter 2, I deal with his transitional period, which reveals a certain disenchantment with the situation of the avant-garde in Brazilian art. In Chapter 3, I address the critic\'s second period, which consolidates the process in which Morais abdicates the defense of the \"new\" as the principal \"way ahead\" for Brazilian art, and comes to revise not only his positions, but a significant part of the history of the Brazilian art as well. Over the course of time, Morais gradually adopts positions that are less intransigent and more conciliatory regarding what he understands as possibilities for an artistic production with Brazilian character. This thesis has attempted to demonstrate the possibility of finding echoes of this desire for a national art in criticism, essays and articles that intersect the three phases in the trajectory of Frederico Morais. It has also sought to indicate the contradictions and fragilities that emerged between two distinct stances adopted by the critic in relation to the period\'s artistic production: the option for what could be considered \"genuinely national\", making advances in the direction of something that would singularize it in relation to an art that presents itself assertively as international; or the option to counter the danger of isolation, backwardness and being out-of-step with the world, by choosing to be carried along by the artistic currents imported from the United States and Europe.

Paradox and evolution of verisimilitude in discourses upon painting (art theory and criticism) in 17th-18th centuries France.

Burette, Stéphanie 19 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis offers to examine theory of art and art criticism texts about painting in 17th and 18th c. France, via the angle of verisimilitude. Numerous thoughts upon the legitimacy of the criticism of those who do not practice painting have preceded the birth of art criticism, and the debate is still going on during the 18th c. However, the notion of verisimilitude, present in art theory discourses (by painters or not) about the creation of an art piece, manifests that the perception of the painting by someone looking at it is taken into account, this time from the point of view of reception: can “one” believe what the painting shows? We aim at proving the crucial role of verisimilitude in giving art critic legitimacy. If a spectator – who is not a painter – has no legitimacy to judge the quality of drawing or colour in an art piece, he can say whether the painting is credible or not.We compare and study the several acceptations of verisimilitude in theorists and critics’ writings in order to highlight that the notion is considered as a rule of painting on both sides, and analyse its evolution in 18th c. discourses.

ZERO et le devenir immatériel de l’art à l’épreuve de la technique, 1958-1964 / ZERO and the dematerialization of art through the prism of technology, 1958-1964

Joly, Noémi 28 April 2017 (has links)
ZERO was created on the 24th of April 1958, on the occasion of the seventh « Night Exhibition », which took place in Otto Piene’s and Heinz Mack’s studio in Düsseldorf. The theme of this exhibition, « The Red Painting » was the same as the inaugural edition of ZERO, a new artist magazine. Following this initiative, two other issues were published, one dedicated to “Vibration” (October 1958), the other to “Dynamo” (July 1961). Various collaborative projects and collective exhibitions revolved around the magazine edited by Mack and Piene, from which ZERO became a platform between several tendencies which had come into being by the early 1960s. This study aims at renewing and enriching knowledge of both a magazine and a movement that have not been the subject of any extensive examination so far. For this purpose, this research focuses on the immaterial art of ZERO as refracted through the prism of technology. ZERO’s alleged technological optimism is explored by the light of the “authorized discourses”, the poietic of the works of art, their aesthetic experience and their critical reception. Therefore, the works of art and the discourses reveal a far less clear picture of the past, which is not free of discrepancies. On the one hand, this reflects the complex issue of dealing with societal shifts characterized by mechanization and automation, information, acceleration, nuclear threat; and, on the other hand, this demonstrates the ambition for ZERO’s both dynamic (vitalist) and “idealistic” art to play an active role in defining the spirit of the era by addressing imaginaries and by occupying territories of sensitive experience.

La critique d'art contemporaine chinoise : Modèles théoriques et visions de l'Histoire : les outils conceptuels des critiques d'art chinois / Chinese contemporary art Criticism : Theoretical models and visions of history : the conceptual tools of Chinese art critics.

Lazarus, Anny 20 March 2015 (has links)
Since 1979, China Art critics have accompanied the development of contemporary art, participating in the revival of intellectual life which have been hit hard during the reign of Mao. The journals in art reflect changes in their thinking. In my thesis I will present both the intellectual scene in which is constructed criticism of Chinese art, and secondly, after analyzing how concepts move from one language to another, I approach theoretical texts and their reception in academic. Attracted initially by Western thought, a reference field that extends from Plato to Danto, Chinese critics then turned to the classical corpus, or the Book of Changes, to forge tools specific "to China" to rewrite history of Chinese contemporary art delivered from the post-colonial yoke, but at the risk of getting trapped in an insidious nationalism encouraged by the Party. The extensive excerpts I propose deal with the meta-criticism, and the fate of the rise of modernity and postmodernism, abstract art from gestures and tools of calligraphy. Rejecting Western concepts which are unfit to interpret Chinese art, according to the traditional concepts to establish the School of yi, Gao Minglu offers a critical theory he tries to apply to contemporary works. Conversely Wang Nanming defends an approach to be universal and denounces the artists and critics who brandich their Chinese identity ... So the approaches discussed are varied and sometimes conflicting, but attest to the vitality of contemporary Chinese art criticism. Art critics propose theoretical models that are more interpretive tools of interpretation than appreciation.
