Adaptation and Design of a Marine Vehicle for Disabilities

Vesterlund, Erik January 2017 (has links)
This report is the result of the master thesis project in Industrial Design engineering (IDE), performed at Luleå University of Technology, by Erik Vesterlund. The task was to produce a conceptual belly boat design that enables individuals paralyzed in the lower extremities to use, propel, maneuver, assemble and use a belly boat. The initial stage included a pre-study of identifying and clarifying what the most common causes of paralyzation of the lower extremities originates from as well as finding the correct terms and what challenges they may include. It was discovered that there are many different causes and effects. Paraplegic are individuals who are unable to move, control or feel their legs depending on the severity of the injury. Quadriplegic individuals are unable to move, control or feel the entire of their body below their shoulders, depending on the severity of the injury. After the causes and effects were mapped, the challenges had to be identified. This was done through tests, interviews, literature studies and participant observations with individuals that are living with these types of injuries. Different problems and needs were mapped, and the most crucial to the usage of a belly boat was identified as the propelling and maneuvering of the craft. Safety aspects were also looked into and documented in order to ensure that the concept was safe for the users. Thereafter, a variety of methods were used in order to generate multiple ideas of how the identified problems and needs could be solved. The generated ideas were formulated and composed into complete solutions in the concept generating phase. The less good solutions were filtered out with the help of an evaluation matrix, and the good solutions were framed into different over-all concepts. Those were graded in a concept scoring matrix and composed into the final concept. The final concept fulfills the overall objectives and aims of the project, and also exceeds some of them, like allowing fully functional individuals to share the craft with Para- and quadriplegics, and without looking as equipment for individuals with disabilities. This broadens the market potential and increases the realization possibilities of a production, hence making the dream of assistance free wilderness adventures for Para- and quadriplegics all over the world, a reality.

Razvoj metoda za određivanje tehničkih i eksploatacionih parametara brodova potiskivača i potiskivanih sastava / Developing methods for determining technical and exploitation parameters of pushboats and pushed convoys

Škiljaica Ivan 04 June 2018 (has links)
Na<br />kraju disertacije prikazane su metode kojima se rešavaju praktični zadaci<br />prevoženja po različitimh brodovima potiskivačima i potiskivanim<br />sastavima.</p> / <p>Movement of convoy/pushed convoy is its ability to change place due to certain<br />force that drives it. This force is created by ship&rsquo;s propellers for given speed v=const<br />and it should be equal to resistance of surrounding water and air. This is the reason<br />why useful force created by ships propellers (thrust) created by propellers of pushboat<br />while navigating with a convoy at v=const needs to overcome not only the<br />resistance of barges but push-boat&rsquo;s resistance as well. For planers of transport<br />process it is necessary to know, besides the resistance of surroundings during<br />navigation of pushed convoys, the value of reduced and specific resistance for certain<br />types of barges and convoys that they form. Apart from that methods for calculation<br />of expected speeds of navigation, value of static load of engines based on<br />experimental research. Besides that new exploitation parameters for determination of<br />push-boat&rsquo;s work are proposed, which haven&rsquo;t been used in Serbia. At the end<br />dissertation presents methods to solve practical transportation tasks for different<br />ships with different convoys.</p>

Wireless Multi-Sensor Feedback Systems for SportsPerformance Monitoring : Design and Development

Sturm, Dennis January 2012 (has links)
Wireless applications have become a common part of daily life. Whether it is mobile phones, the Wi-Fi router at home, the keycard which has replaced the car key, a radio frequency identification access system to a building or a Bluetooth headset for your computer or phone, the means of modern wireless data exchange is an omnipresent technology. In sports, the market is in its infancy for wireless, technical applications or gadgets. Only heart rate monitors and GPS watches are currently used by recreational athletes. Even though most of the larger sports equipment companies regularly launch new products related to sports performance monitoring and mobile phone technology, product innovation leaps are rare.In this work the design of a wireless sports performance measurement platform is presented. Using the example of kayaking, this platform is configured as a paddle performance measuring system, the Kayak XL System, which can monitor propulsive paddle force, paddle kinematics and boat velocity, interalia. A common mobile phone platform has been chosen as the user interface for this system. The design approach focussing on user requests, demands and expectations in combination with the process of iterative technical development are unveiled in this thesis. An evaluation of the system is presented and the work is finalised with an overview of further systems which have been designed based on the developed measurement platform. The Kayak XL System is a flexible system designed to be mounted onto any standard kayak paddle and installed in any competition kayak. Versatility, unobtrusiveness and usability were major design concerns. The developed system consists of four modules plus a software which has been designed for Android mobile phones. The phone communicates with each of the four modules trough Bluetooth radio. These four modules are also referred to as nodes and have specific measurement purposes. Two nodes have been designed to measure paddle force and kinematics, one node has the purpose to measure foot stretcher force and boat motion data, and the fourth node enables a more convenient method of calibrating paddle force measurement. The fourth node is therefore only needed prior to performance data acquisition. Results show that paddle and foot stretcher force can be measured with a resolution below 1N after calibration. Installing the paddle nodes on a previously configured paddle without repeated calibration is facilitated with the compromise of a doubled error margin. The default sampling frequency is set to 100 Hz and can, like all system parameters, be configured on the mobile phone. Real-time computation of complex performance parameters is only limited by the phone CPU. The system adds twice 109 g to the paddle and approximately 850 g to the kayak, excluding the mass of the mobile phone / <p>QC 20120827</p>

Längs med Hjälmarens stränder och förbi - relationen mellan den gropkeramiska kulturen och båtyxekulturen / Along the shores of Lake Hjälmaren and beyond – the relationship between the Pitted Ware Culture and the Boat Axe Culture

von Hackwitz, Kim January 2009 (has links)
The nature of the relationship between the Pitted Ware Culture and the Boat Axe Culture has dominated Swedish Middle Neolithic research, since the question was raised a century ago. Basically, the debate is concerned with whether or not the two material cultures express two different ethnical groups. Proponents for the currently established perspective stress that the cultures represent two distinct ethnic groups. A large amount of research has focused on identifying differences between the two cultures in the archaeological record. This study will test an alternative approach to the archaeology of the Middle Neolithic. Rather than presuming an antithetical relationship between the two cultures attention will be given to investigating the relationship between the Pitted Ware Culture and the Boat Axe Culture. This will be done by a landscape centered approach. In the first case I will test the conventional opinion expressing that the two cultures are spatially separated to the coast and the inland. In addition, the analysis seeks to understand how different activities were located in relation to various landscape phenomena. In the second case study, phenomenology and current landscape theory combined with a viewshed GIS-analysis will form the basis for a discussion regarding the localisation and function of the Pitted Ware sites. In the third case I will discuss connective features of the Middle Neolithic landscapes in the Lake Hjälmaren area. Focus will be given to the long-term processes and the reproduction of the cultural landscapes over time. Based on the results, I will propose that the Middle Neolithic archaeological record, rather than being the result of two ethnic groups, express a dynamic and active society that manifests itself through a variety of different places, which were maintained for specific purposes.

Neiß (Neiss), Michael January 2012 (has links)

Extracting Cultural Information from Ship Timber

Creasman, Pearce 2010 December 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is rooted in one general question: what can the wood from ships reveal about the people and cultures who built them? Shipwrecks are only the last chapter of a complex story, and while the last fifty years of nautical archaeology have managed to rewrite a number of these chapters, much of the information unrelated to a ship’s final voyage remains a mystery. However, portions of that mystery can be exposed by an examination of the timbers. An approach for the cultural investigation of ship timbers is presented and attempts are made to establish the most reliable information possible from the largely unheralded treasures of underwater excavations: timbers. By introducing the written record, iconographic record, and the social, economic, and political factors to the archaeological record a more complete analysis of the cultural implications of ship and boat timbers is possible. I test the effectiveness of the approach in three varied casestudies to demonstrate its limits and usefulness: ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, the Mediterranean under Athenian influence, and Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula during the Discoveries. The results of these studies demonstrate how ship timbers can be studied in order to better understand the people who built the vessels.

Field-based measurement of hydrodynamics associated with engineered in-channel structures : the example of fish pass assessment

Kriechbaumer, Thomas January 2016 (has links)
The construction of fish passes has been a longstanding measure to improve river ecosystem status by ensuring the passability of weirs, dams and other in- channel structures for migratory fish. Many fish passes have a low biological effectiveness because of unsuitable hydrodynamic conditions hindering fish to rapidly detect the pass entrance. There has been a need for techniques to quantify the hydrodynamics surrounding fish pass entrances in order to identify those passes that require enhancement and to improve the design of new passes. This PhD thesis presents the development of a methodology for the rapid, spatially continuous quantification of near-pass hydrodynamics in the field. The methodology involves moving-vessel Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements in order to quantify the 3-dimensional water velocity distribution around fish pass entrances. The approach presented in this thesis is novel because it integrates a set of techniques to make ADCP data robust against errors associated with the environmental conditions near engineered in-channel structures. These techniques provide solutions to (i) ADCP compass errors from magnetic interference, (ii) bias in water velocity data caused by spatial flow heterogeneity, (iii) the accurate ADCP positioning in locales with constrained line of sight to navigation satellites, and (iv) the accurate and cost-effective sensor deployment following pre-defined sampling strategies. The effectiveness and transferability of the methodology were evaluated at three fish pass sites covering conditions of low, medium and high discharge. The methodology outputs enabled a detailed quantitative characterisation of the fish pass attraction flow and its interaction with other hydrodynamic features. The outputs are suitable to formulate novel indicators of hydrodynamic fish pass attractiveness and they revealed the need to refine traditional fish pass design guidelines.
