“O Brave New World, That Has Such Critics In’t”: An Argumentative Essay on Criticism of The TempestMoors, Amkiram January 2014 (has links)
Shakespeare criticism has been a rapidly evolving field of literary studies. Scholars such as Francis Barker and Peter Hulme, Meredith Anne Skura, Stanley Wells, Harold Bloom and Sidney Shanker have continuously developed new theories and dismissed previous theories. In this essay, I discuss the negative results of such attitudes and the problems of “over-reading”, in the critiques which are based on the following theories: the post-colonial, psychoanalytical, biographical and ideological. I elaborate on the relevant arguments and issues within literary critique mentioned by Michael Taylor in his book Shakespeare Criticism in the Twentieth Century. To create a common ground for the theories, I have used critical texts concerning William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. I find that while all forms of literary critique have flaws, the theories also contribute valuable insights for further readings. I maintain that combining several forms of literary critique when analysing a text will create a more complex and in-depth reading, impossible to achieve through a singular critical theory.

Relationship of Physical Characteristics, Personality Traits, and Biographical Data to Success of Flight AttendantsHons, Michael Jerome 08 1900 (has links)
With the EEOC requiring empirical criterion-related validity for selection procedures, predictor variables of physical characteristics, biographical data, and personality traits were related to both on-the-job performance and training performance. In the correlational analysis of the variables, a total of 455 flight attendants from a single airline were used, with half of the subjects serving as a cross-validation sample. The results showed slight relationships between biographical data and physical characteristics to training performance but no relationship between any predictor variable and job performance. The impact of race being a significant predictor of training performance was reviewed. The lack of practical information was discussed, and implications made for future research to include proper design and reliability of screening procedures before attempting criterion-related validation.

Based on a True StoryElkins, Mary 26 April 2011 (has links)
Trying to remember is a form of forgetting. Memory fades, changes meaning, and disappears over time. While trying to find other ways to preserve stories about my family, it occurred to me that I could recreate what I remember in clay. I am creating collections of physical mementos of the memories that fill my head, focusing mainly on my childhood. Remembering is in itself an act of forgetting, and thus this is my memory preservation kit. I am recording memories of my family for posterity in clay before I have a chance to forget.

Participant Reference in Three Balochi Dialects : Male and Female Narrations of Folktales and Biographical TalesNourzaei, Maryam January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present study is to investigate how men and women in three Iranian Balochi dialects, Coastal Balochi, Koroshi Balochi and Sistani Balochi, refer to 3rd person participants in oral narratives of two genres: folktales and biographical tales. The stories that are analysed were recorded during several field trips to Iran and the approach used is that of Levinsohn (1994, 2015). The first part of the dissertation begins with an overview of the Balochi language and its dialects, including a brief presentation of its phonology, and then reviews previous studies of Balochi, before introducing the case system and types of alignment in the three dialects. Chapter 2 introduces the reader to the status of orality in the three dialects, before giving details about the corpus of texts that were analysed. Of particular note is the fact that each story in the corpus was told by both a man and a woman. Chapter 3 examines different approaches to the analysis of participant reference, before comparing those of Gundel et al. and Levinsohn in greater detail. The second part of the dissertation applies Levinsohn’s approach to texts in each of the three dialects in turn. Chapters 4–6 identify and analyse the different ways in which the participants in the stories are referred to when the subject remains the same and in three specific situations when the subject changes. This enables default encoding values to be established for each of the four situations. Motivations for over-encoding and, in some situations, under-encoding, are then identified. Chapters 7–9 investigate whether the gender of the storyteller (male versus female) and/or the genre of the story (folktale versus biographical tale) influence the way that the participants are referred to. This leads in chapter 10 to a gender- and genre-based comparison of participant reference across the present dialects. Conclusions are presented in chapter 11. In general, the participant reference strategy used was the same in all three dialects, regardless of the gender or the genre. The main exception involved reported conversations in Koroshi Balochi, where the additive enclitic ham was attached to the reference to a subject who responded in line with the contents of the speech reported in the previous sentence. Other variations appeared to depend on the degree to which the storyteller was proficient in his or her art. The dissertation concludes with four Appendices. Appendix A presents six texts that were interlinearised using the FLEx programme, while Appendix B consists of participant reference charts of the same texts following Levinsohn’s approach. Appendix C presents details of the case system and alignment for each of the three dialects. Finally, the chart in Appendix D compares the approaches of Levinsohn and of Gundel et al. to participant reference in a specific text. A CD with audio files of the six texts and some photos taken during fieldwork is also available.

Caravaggio, Spenser e Rei James I, em Innocence, Mutabilitie e Speaking Like Magpies de Frank McGuinness / Caravaggio, Spenser and King James I, in Innocence, Mutabilitie and Speaking like Magpies by Frank McGuinnessStankiewicz, Mariese Ribas 10 September 2013 (has links)
This dissertation aims at verifying the processes of historical and biographical transposition to three plays by Irish playwright Frank McGuinness, Innocence (1986), Mutabilitie (1997) and Speaking like Magpies (2005), and the interculturality resulting from them. It is also based on the hypothesis that all of the processes are structured from the fictionalization of the data contained in historical and biographical texts about the issues dealt with in each of these theatrical plays, as a way to criticize the narratives that target objectivity. In this study, it has been noticed that, in inconclusive reports and in the profiles of a famous Italian painter, of a renowned English poet, and of a controversial Scottish king of England, modeled in the Renaissance according to their works and deeds, the playwright found an opportunity to show history and biography from the Irish perspective.

[en] A NINETEENTH CENTURY WOMAN IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY GUISE: A CRITICAL-BIOGRAPHICAL EXAMINATION OF ANA CRISTINA CESAR S LITERARY REMAINS / [pt] UMA MULHER DO SÉCULO XIX DISFARÇADA EM SÉCULO XX: UM OLHAR CRÍTICO-BIOGRÁFICO SOBRE O ACERVO DE ANA CRISTINA CESARCARLA NASCIMENTO 14 January 2005 (has links)
[en] The starting point of this work is the suspicion that many of the critical readings on the poetry of Ana Cristina Cesar, who killed herself in 1983, are characterized by Freudian melancholy in their attachment to her memory. In approaching her personal archive with a critical-biographical outlook, I set out to discuss the several degrees of emotional compromise - variously productive - that can be detected in the discourse of her friends and major critics: Armando Freitas Filho, Italo Moriconi, Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda and Flora Süssekind. In addition, an alter-biographical look at some of the poet s unpublished manuscripts tries to establish a textual dialogue with the biographical traces found in the archival research. Finally, an effort is made to leave clear and unmistakable marks of the theoretical steps taken
by me in order to make it easier for the reader to detect my own attachment to the object of the research.

O entendimento de valores olímpicos por atletas olímpicos brasileiros / The understanding of Olympic values by brazilian olympic athletesPerez, Carlos Rey 07 July 2017 (has links)
This set of characteristics is characteristic of an ethical and moral system. Pierre de Coubertin, in creating the Olympic Games of the Modern Era, thought that sport as a philosophy of life, Olympism, that exalts and combines, in balance, the qualities of body, mind and soul. Sport, as the guiding thread of interpersonal relations, could, in a way, expose significant values and behaviors, constituting a cultural identity, providing a context of educational potential, as well as a platform for ethical attitudes and values indispensable to social and individual life. Out of this comes Olympic values, understood as human values (friendship, courage, respect, excellence, inspiration, determination and equality) that can be a means of reinforcing personal identity and strengthening the ability to achieve goals through sport. The objective of this work is to discuss the understanding that Brazilian Olympic athletes have of the so-called Olympic values, understanding these as moral virtues. To do so, the life histories of ten Olympic athletes will be analyzed, situating them in different historical moments: 1948-1984 (amateur phase); 1988-2016 (professionalism phase). The athletes try to expose their concept on each value and their narratives converge to the same understandings, although the athletes of the professionalism phase put a greater emphasis on issues related to competitiveness and perfectionism, possibly fruit of the environment where competition and levels Of excellence required are key to success in their athletic careers. Thus, it is possible to affirm that the values were not altered with the change from amateurism to professionalism, but revalued by the transformations in contemporary society

In Brazil, many children have the opportunity to learn about different sports. Previous issue date: 2017-04-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis is about aging, HIV and gender in the context of subjectivity. In a first moment, it looks to the importance of aging for the sociological studies, as well to the formation of the categories of elderly people and people living with HIV. Then, it analyses the subjectivity of elderly people. For doing that, a qualitative sociological research and a bibliographical review of authors who explore the topic were realized. It was possible to point out the limits of the discursive construction of the erotization process of the old age, in a critique of the gerontological discourse of multisensorial sexuality as well of the discourse of HIV feminization. To go deep in the debate, the thesis explores the idea of biographical rupture, which proposes a reordering of the everyday life. By understanding subjectivity through biographical ruptures, it was possible to dialogue with the logic of affective, marital and family experiences, the way of facing HIV, stigmas, secrets, corporeity and sexuality, bringing the unequal gender relations to the debate. The empirical analysis of these questions relies on field work and interviews, done between October 2014 and June 2015 with 15 elderly people over 60 years of age who receive regular treatment at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases Dr. Anuar Auad, in Goiânia, Brazil. The thesis concludes that old age and the way of facing HIV are heterogeneous. The unequal gender relations exercise a fundamental role in the subjectivity, since they produce different reactions to risk, marital life and the way how elderly people face HIV, which leads to a reflection about the production of differences. The living experience with HIV has given to the interviewees a constant learning for the recognition and reordering of the life ruptures. The understanding of the thesis is that the dilemmas of elderly people living with HIV are not individuals, but a responsibility of all the society.
