The processes of metropolization and its extensions in the formation of global cityregions are experienced in large urban-industrial agglomerations of flexible and globalized capitalism of today. These processes act spatially in at least two directions: first, the expansion of urban-industrial forms of cities, often surpassing their formal boundaries; second, the intensification of internal transformations of the metropolis, and the redefinition of its forms and contents. In this last process, the old forms of the industrial city present in the current consolidated industrial metropolis emerge as "industrial cemeteries" (brownfields). The study of Porto Alegre metropolitan area’s industrial cemeteries, presented in this thesis, analyzes the inclusion of spatial forms in its current complexity. We start from the historic rescue of its formation as a industrial city and its subsequent metropolization, concentration and reconcentration processes, that currently characterizes it as a metropolis of services. Then, we work the different theoretical approaches in studies of industrial cemeteries. The old industrial area of Porto Alegre - Quarto Distrito neighborhood - is the case study on which we concentrate, and the analysis is performed through the integration of industrial space in three logics: global, regional and local logic. We conclude that industrial cemeteries, residual spaces of the industrial city in the metropolis, are unevenly inserted in the different circuits of urban accumulation. Previous issue date: 2016-06-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis investigates the use of nudity and seminudity and the multiple representations of masculinity in the
modern funerary art at the city of São Paulo, looking at the collection of sculptures of the Consolação, Araçá
and São Paulo cemeteries, situated in São Paulo State Capital, between 1920 and 1950. This work is a result
of the doctorate research done for in the post-graduation program in History, at Universidade Federal de
Goiás PPGH/UFG, supervised by Professor Dr. Maria Elizia Borges, furthermore by other resources obtained
during the Sandwich Doctorate at Facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II”,
under supervision of Professor Dr. Fábio Mangone. It is questioned which social and cultural aspects
symbolize such male images, paying attention to the proper functions of the space of the cemetery, as an
architectural object by definition. These are seen through the prism of Art History, allowing the terms – Art
and History – to criticize and transform each other, opening disciplinary borders, as well as conceptual and
linguistic ones, enabling for the domain of the historian to be modified by interventions of Art. Through the
tabulation of male image occurrences, partially or completely naked, is observed that Italian aesthetic
premises, especially those of the Novecento, have significant influence over the elaboration of São Paulo
funerary art. This sculptures utilize often depictions that highlight sensibility in face of death, as well as the
virility associated with work, on the other hand – in other words, there is no single, unchanging discourse on
masculinity in the time period investigated. The analysis of the composition of the sculptures allow
reconstructing partially the musings of the sculptors and their aesthetic expressivity as well as the meanings
of their use of nudity and seminudity in the funerary art of the period. Furthermore, it is poited out that open
air cemeteries allow for the exhibition of depictions of a masculinity sensitive and/or virile with greater
expressive liberty. In short, these sculptures, as images, are historically localized and at the same time,
bearers of a variety of temporalities and spatialities in the foundations, ever permeated by a continuous
process of reconfiguration, from both, Past and Present. “Baring” them allows to find vestiges of Italian
expression in the Tropical lands.
Resulta do
sob a tutela do Profº Dr. Fábio Mangone.

Análisis de los reportajes en los programas televisivos Al Sexto Día, Domingo al Día, Día 6 y 24 horas sobre el día de los muertos del 2018 en el Cementerio Nueva Esperanza / Analysis of the reports in the television programs On the Sixth Day, Sunday to the Day, Day 6 and 24 hours on the day of the dead of 2018 in the New Hope CemeteryChangana Meléndez, Danae Mylena 02 December 2019 (has links)
This research work has focused on the analysis of the treatment that was given, in some programs, to the feast of the day of the dead, in the Nueva Esperanza cemetery, during 2018. To carry out this project, four reports were selected which were presented in the following programs: Day 6, Sunday a day, On the sixth day and 24 hours central edition. They analyzed the way in which they have approached the creation of the identity of the characters, the elements that have been used to elaborate them, the actions that are embodied and the relationship between the living and the dead during this date. In deepening the subject, patterns were found that have been analyzed in conjunction with the theoretical framework, focus group and interviews that were made to complement this research. / Trabajo de investigación

Begravningsplatser som arkiv : Gravstenar som dokument / Cemeteries as Archives : Gravestones as DocumentsZingmark, Fanny January 2022 (has links)
Introduction This thesis deals with the potential similarities between cemeteries and archives and the potential similarities between gravestones and documents. To give context, a background on the evolution of Swedish cemeteries is provided. The potential similarities are then explored from a practical and an operational perspective, respectively, based on, e.g., the historical development of archives as discussed in Terry Cook’s four paradigms. In addition, abstract and metaphorical perspectives are explored with respect to Michel Foucault’s and Jacques Derrida’s theories of the archive. Method The method consists of qualitative observations from selected cemeteries in Stockholm combined with image analyses of photographs of gravestones taken during the observations. The observations and image analyses are based on the search for possible denotations and connotations. The method section assumes a hermeneutic approach. Analysis Four observations made at Katarina kyrkogård, Maria Magdalena kyrkogård, Skogskyrkogården and Norra begravningsplatsen are presented. Fourteen image analyses of photographs of gravestones taken at these cemeteries are reported. Results The results show similarities between cemeteries and archives as well as similarities between gravestones and documents. Conclusion Several similarities can be established by applying different archive-theoretical perspectives to cemeteries and gravestones. On an operational plane, the evolution of cemeteries follows the historical development of archives in several aspects. Abstract and metaphorical similarities are presented, mainly from a power perspective. A discussion on how these similarities provide the possibility of using an archival approach, partly in future research and partly in the preserving work of cemeteries, gravestones and the ecclesiastical activities is provided. This is a two years master's thesis in Archival science.

Temporal trends in grave marker attributes an analysis of headstones in FloridaReynolds, Patrisha 01 August 2012 (has links)
Grave markers reflect a wealth of information and collectively epitomize society's historic, social, and economic patterns over time. Despite an abundance of cemetery research in other parts of the country, little research has been undertaken to evaluate grave marker attributes in Florida. The purpose of this research was to determine how grave marker attributes have changed over time in north-central, central, and southeast Florida. Data were collected from ten cemeteries in five counties in Florida, representing the grave markers of over 1,100 individuals. Data collection involved visiting each cemetery, photographing markers, and cataloging grave marker attributes. Attributes analyzed included marker type, marker material, epitaphs, iconographic images, memorial photographs, footstones, and kerbs. A number of important trends were noted. Marker material exhibited the clearest example of a temporal trend, shifting over time from 73% marble to 73% granite. Marker type varied greatly from upright and flat ground markers to a variety of customized markers and vaults. Cultural differences were also noted with in-ground vaults dominating traditionally black cemeteries. There were clear differences in marker style between affluent and less affluent cemeteries, with numerous hand-cast cement markers observed in less prosperous areas. Furthermore, beginning in the early 1980's there is an increase in customized laser engraved markers. Overall, Florida's cemeteries offer a rich history of the state's mortuary practices and further research should be conducted to preserve this history.

Queering the Normal? : An intersectional study of gender identities and roles in the Late Iron Age cemeteries at Lovö, Sweden / Ifrågasätter det normala?
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the relationship between grave goods and the identity of buried individuals. The interpretation of sex and gender, as well as gendered grave goods in Late Iron Age Scandinavia, is of a particular focus. A comparative analysis of 163 graves was carried out using an intersectional theoretic perspective, statistical analysis, and a database, with the Lovö cemeteries serving as the case study. The results of this analysis revealed certain patterns and variances that demonstrate a relationship between the grave goods assemblages that were chosen and aspects of an individual’s identity, including gender for some grave goods, but a lack of a correlation for other grave goods. Thus, it concluded that “normal” burials are influenced by factors such as facets of one’s identity, community standing and social status, familial ties and kinship, and lived experiences, with each grave tailored to suit the individual, and that gender as a whole has little influence on how a burial is constructed.

A Method for Determining Damage Within Historic Cemeteries: A First Step for Digital HeritageMalcolm, Justin E 01 January 2018 (has links)
While it is true that historic cemeteries are places that contain a wealth of knowledge about the history of a community they are sometimes not well maintained. The information within can be lost as grave-markers are damaged either by natural causes or human interaction. In larger cemeteries preserving these significant places can sometimes be difficult due to a number of different factors. Therefore focusing preservation efforts on specific locations where damage is more likely to occur is crucial to ensure that the monuments that are the most at risk are preserved. One possible way of accomplishing this is through the utilization of a geographic information system (GIS) to determine the shortest distance path an individual may take to reach a specific grave-marker. This can be accomplished by conducting a near analysis between an origin point and every grave-marker. These paths would also show each grave-marker that an individual passes indicating the potential for purposeful or accidental interaction. With this information efforts such as photogrammetry can be applied effectively for digital heritage preservation. Such methods would permit individuals to manipulate three-dimensional representations of grave-markers in order to preserve a large portion of the information it contains.

The population ages, the immigration to Sweden and mobility increases, therefore the need for cemeteries gets affected. Land for cemeteries must be secured because death is inescapable and there must be enough place for individuals to have their final rest. The Swedish funeral service is unique. We have distinct laws according to cemeteries and two organizations are responsible for the cemeteries in Sweden. However, planning for the dead has been neglected, even if it is an important place in a vibrant community. Because of the fact there are geographical, functional and emotional connections to the cemeteries. Why should we plan for the dead when the dead are dead? This thesis aims to carry out an estimation of the need of land for cemeteries on a national level in Sweden and additionally visualize the planning for the dead and its relevance. The method to achieve the aim of the study was to process the empirical material in the software ArcGIS Pro. Therefore, the method is based on a few variables that have been considered to influence the need of land for cemeteries. The result shows that there is possibly a lack of space at several cemeteries in the future, mainly in the three biggest cities (Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö) but also in other larger cities. However, the result says nothing about the amount of surface available for burying the deceased, which is left to further research.

Previous issue date: 2018-09-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation deals with changes in funerary customs in the city of São Paulo between 1858 and 1890. After much discussions, in 1858 was inaugurated the first public cemetery of the capital of São Paulo: the Consolation. This edification made possible the construction of other necropolises in the city. The existence of these new public spaces has brought the development of services and funerals companies, commercial activity that was source of much controversy, because for many people, it was an immoral trade. The funeral customs of traditional Catholicism, linked to the sacred, had to adapt to hygienist discourses and specific legislation to advance in the project of desacralization of the rites and spaces of death / Esta dissertação trata das alterações dos costumes funerários na cidade de São Paulo entre 1858 e 1890.
