Occupational health and safety risks in the wood recycling industry of Lithuania / Risker inom Arbetsmiljö, hälsa och säkerhet i Litauens träåtervinningsindustri

Salomonsson, Eva January 2022 (has links)
A good Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is needed to reach sustainability. OHS consists of three parts: 1) physical, 2) mental and 3) social. The purpose of this study was to explore and foresee the main physical OHS risks when upscaling the recycling of wood in Lithuania, with the goal to prevent those risks. The study was explorative and interviews with semi-structured questions were used as a method. Three of the four informants mentioned air pollution, traffic, working equipment, safety equipment, and chemical risk. The highest rate of physical risks mentioned was the physical ones and then the mechanical risks. Opinions differ whether the risks would change when upscaling the industry, from no stressed or additional risks to all risks being stressed and added risk. Results should be seen as a hint of direction when it comes to OHS risks within wood recycling in Lithuania.

[pt] A TRANSFORMAÇÃO DE UM CÍRCULO VICIOSO EM UM CÍRCULO VIRTUOSO: UM PANORAMA SOBRE A ECONOMIA CIRCULAR PARA AS MICRO, PEQUENAS E MÉDIAS EMPRESAS (MPMES) / [en] TURNING A VICIOUS CIRCLE INTO A VIRTUOUS CIRCLE: AN OVERVIEW OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY (CE) FOR MICRO, SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES (MSMES)

ISABELLA BERNSTEIN SCORZELLI 24 February 2023 (has links)
[en] This paper aims to not only identify, but also propose circular economy (CE) principles and practices that can be useful to Brazilian MSMEs. The methodology included a systematic literature review and interviews with Brazilian startups. A total of 65 startups were identified, from which 7 were interviewed. One finding is clear: the current gap between theory and practice that translates into a lack of understanding on how to implement CE principles in corporations. The interviews also showed that the business circular strategy is usually related to partners previous professional experiences and, at first, has no focus on the principles of circularity. To assist businesses through these first steps, an implementation framework was developed. The research main conclusions are: the process of implementation progresses as companies invest in knowledge, improving their perceptions and level of maturity; the experiences with startups can inspire MSMEs in the advancement of circularity.

Les formes du réalisme scientifique : l’empirisme de Locke et le naturalisme contemporain / The forms of scientific realism : Locke's empiricism and contemporary naturalism

Covu, Diégo 29 November 2013 (has links)
The very fact of being engaged in an explicative program, canonically called philosophical, calls us to this presupposition of an affinity between world and words. We propose in the introduction a coherentist approach to philosophical systems, defined as worldviews where ontology and epistemology are in charge of mutual support. In Locke’s empiricism, the epistemological line defined by his empiricism is coupled to a corpuscularist conception of reality. We’ll show that the lines of tension existing between those two positions are consolidated by a deeply realistic doxastic attitude, bringing to the famous thesis of the likeness between real and perceived first qualities. The science of that time is thus promoted by a rationalist line of a deep affinity between the categories that make our environment intelligible and the very reality. Today’s naturalism leans entirely on the intelligibility that we have of reality through scientific activities, so founding the reappearance of ontology as this ideal of rational access to reality, by means of largely a priori procedures, that our sciences flush. If the pretentions of the metaphysicians to meet those objectives have to be deceived, it seems more judicious to value the mathematical a priori which, pace Quine’s model of the seamless web of belief, seems empirically incorrigible. It’s unreasonable effectiveness in the heuristics of our fundamental sciences places effectively it in the very first line in the constitution of the different strata of objectivation of our environnement

Perinotto, Hélène 11 December 2014 (has links)
Debris avalanches, resulting from flank collapses that shape volcanic and mountainous edifices are rapidand dangerous gravity-driven granular flows that travel long run out distances. The dynamic and the transport mechanisms behind this high mobility remain poorly understood. The numerous models proposed to explain this high mobility include processes based on lubrication or fluidisation of the granular mass of the flow body, but also the dynamic disintegration of the transported particles. To date, all these proposed mechanisms lack observational support and quantification of the state of the particles of the granular mass during the transport. To identify the main transport mechanisms, we propose here detailed field studies of volcanic debris avalanches deposits resulting of flank-collapse events on an oceanic shield volcano, the Piton des Neiges (La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean). This study has been combined with morphometric (fractal dimension and circularity), exoscopic and grain-size analyses. Moreover, the fabric of the deposits has been investigated by with the characteristics of the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (ASM). From these data we highlight a proximal to distal evolution of the debris avalanches transport and emplacement dynamics. We demonstrate that syn-transport dynamic disintegration continuously operates with the distance from the source down to a grinding limit of 500μm. Below this limit, the particle size reduction exclusively results from the attrition of the particles by frictional interactions. Thus, the exceptional mobility of debris avalanches may be explained by thecombined effect of elastic energy release during the dynamic disintegration of the larger clasts (> 500μm) and frictional reduction within the matrix due to the dispersive interactions between the finer particles (< 500 μm). All these data also allow to specify the transport direction and the approximate size of the debris avalanches related to the Piton des Neiges destabilisations.

It is, specifically, an analysis of the eighteen first chapters of his book Discorsi on the First Decade of Livy, which we believe to emerge a solution to the original problem of the constitution of forms of govern in the time. For this, we start with an examination of the historical and intellectual Quattrocento Italian. The intention is to demonstrate the conceptual framework that has influenced and Machiavellian political theory with which the thinker dialogues in his writings. Moreover, we highlight the return that the author makes the theory of circularity presented by the Greek historian Polybius. From Polybius, we expose his conception of historical temporality marked by circular movement of the forms of government, as well as the paradoxical problem that involves the formulation of mixed government. In this regard, we noted how Machiavelli takes this theory with the intention of recovering the discussion on the establishment of political regimes. Regarding the resumption seek to affirm that overcoming the Machiavellian thought to not accept the circularity as a determining factor of historical time. From this analysis comes the hypothesis that the temporal history as an expression of the movement of forms of government cannot be understood by natural law or by any other determinant a priori. Following these assumptions, we find the theory of conflict a vital component to understanding the dynamics involving both the political organization of state such as the movement elaborated by history. So, being the political element essential for the promotion of political organization, as well as for the realization of liberty in republics, also conclude that it is their responsibility to the mobilization of historical processes. The conflict in synthesis can be understood as the space of political action performed within the company, as this space has the constant possibility predominant trait of "creation." This sphere of action not only mobilizes the story (in order to raise their movement), but acts as a characteristic of "doing" history. In other words, the story has as one of its core components forming the field of human creation. Added to this the issue of corruption that marks the limits of human action in time. Machiavelli sees the degeneration process of the political as a condition of nature in all political body thus historical process is limited by that element which marks again, the field of contingency that the universe is subjected political. Finally, a search for the conception of history in Machiavelli reveals, in our view, the secularization of its elements, the identification of political conflicts as its mobilizer and the possibility of coming-into-being as a dimension of their process.

Come/post : A Playful Contribution to Rehabilitate Soil

Gunnbjörnsdóttir, Björk January 2020 (has links)
In this project I will explore food waste and how we can study and partake in nature’s ecosystem, in our daily lives, using a playful approach. One-third of all food produced in the world is wasted. Our systems encourage consumeristic behaviours and wastefulness, they encourage exponential growth in preference to circularity. Human disconnection to nature’s ecosystems is resulting in depleting, eroding and polluted soils. Soil is the foundation of life, humans would not exist without it. Our food exists because of soil and we obtain energy from the food we eat - unfortunately, the nutrients in our food are declining due to intensive industrial farming. Compost enhances the soil, nourishes the life within it. We can think of nutrients as our source of energy. This flow of energy in nature goes from soils to plants, to animals, fungi, microorganisms, bacteria and back to its origin - the soil. Organic matter is fundamental to create viable habitat and preserve water in the soil. Why are not all of us composting? How can composting be involved in our everyday life? My ambition is to make a playful and low tech, human-powered composting machine. Where children can collaborate with older generations, together, learning how to turn their food waste to compost, while playing. With low tech machines run by human energy, I implement movements and play to evoke curiosity. While having fun I want to change our thoughts of waste to valuable resources.

Alenbrand, Michaela, Johansson, Karin January 2021 (has links)

Closing the Loop : Integrating Circularity within the Fashion Industry's Post-Retail Activities

Johansson, Amina, Stubb, Rebecka January 2021 (has links)
The fashion industry has historically been seen as synonymous with many unsustainable practices, such as overproduction, pollution, and mass-consumption. Today, many fashion brands are putting more attention to sustainability and are engaging in activities aimed at making the industry more environmentally friendly. This study investigates three Swedish fashion businesses, H&M, Lindex, and Gina Tricot, with the purpose of examining and analyzing how they integrate circular strategies within their post-retail initiatives. Additionally, the aim is to investigate what strengths and weaknesses can be identified as related to these strategies in terms of reducing the fashion industry’s negative environmental impacts. The study is based on a content analysis of websites, documents, and policies of the fashion businesses as well as a qualitative semi-structured interview with a circular sustainability expert. By using a theoretical framework related to circular post-retail strategies as a tool of analysis, the results showed various levels of implementation of circular strategies among the businesses. Prolonging the lifespan of clothing by reusing, repairing, or re-designing, rather than repurposing and recycling, is seen as more effective in terms of environmental sustainability. Moreover, all businesses aim to inspire its consumers to make mindful choices, though the inspiration needs to be connected to an actual service if behaviors are to change. Concludingly, fashion businesses need to embrace circularity by finding new ways to profit from already existing garments through rental, repair, and re-design services to make the industry more environmentally sustainable.

Tomovic, Tina 30 June 2022 (has links)

[en] A STRATEGIC MEASUREMENT MODEL TO MONITOR AND EVALUATE CIRCULARITY PERFORMANCE IN ORGANIZATIONS FROM A TRANSITION PERSPECTIVE / [pt] MODELO ESTRATÉGICO DE MEDIÇÃO PARA MONITORAR E AVALIAR O DESEMPENHO EM CIRCULARIDADE NAS ORGANIZAÇÕES, SEGUNDO UMA PERSPECTIVA DE TRANSIÇÃO

NATHALIA GERONAZZO FRANCO 23 August 2021 (has links)
[en] The concept of a circular economy (CE) transition requires multi-level frameworks regarding the definition of goals and targets for different time horizons, desired change timeframes, sectoral circularity guidelines, and national and regional public policies, among other factors. Aiming to provide consistent frameworks for evidence-based business decisions with implications for the meso and macro levels of CE, the objective of this dissertation is to propose a strategic measurement model to monitoring and evaluating the circularity performance at the micro level by integrating GMA and two multicriteria decision-making methods. The main findings of this study are: (i) a generic morphological matrix comprising eight parameters and their possible states to define and visually represent possible CE transition scenarios for a given organization that aims to evolve through CE transitions; (ii) the potential use of a hybrid methodological approach (that combines GMA with two MCDM methods) for selecting the most relevant C-indicators for each R-strategy could be highlighted; (iii) an initial list of 58 C-indicators and metrics associated to ten R-strategies and a set of 38 selected C-indicators by adopting the hybrid AHP-TOPSIS method; (iv) definition of ten composite C-indicators associated with the R-strategies, as well as an overall Circularity Performance Index (CPI), and a step-by-step procedure to calculate them in different CE transition scenarios. From a CE transition perspective, the results highlighted practical implications for organizations and value chains, once the proposed model is designed to be applied in different business contexts, especially in those organizations that will define their circularity targets and respective agendas concerning CE transitions.
