Understanding the creative process of craftsmen for enabling inner development of sustainable leaders : An exploratory study about the potential of experiential learning

Leaders’ individual transformative capabilities, qualities and skills are critical to the sustainable transformation in organisations. This exploratory research aims to explore the inspiration from the creative process of craftsmen to enable inner development of sustainable leaders for promoting sustainable transformation. Taking experiential learning as an intermediate factor, the thesis asks two research questions. 1) How does the creative process of craftsmen contribute to experiential learning?2) What is the implication of experiential learning to inner development of sustainable leaders? The frameworks of the creative process, the Inner Development Goals and the Experiential Learning Cycle are used to analyse the potential of experiential learning observed through the craftsman's creativity process to enable inner development of sustainable leaders. The research is led in two parts. The first part is an inductive empirical research based on semi-structured interviews with selected craftsmen to understand how craftsmen engage in experiential learning during their creative process. The second part of the research is a deductive theoretical analysis to understand how experiential learning can facilitate inner development of sustainable leaders. The results suggest that engaging in experiential learning through creative process is an innovative pers for sustainable leaders to develop individual transformative capabilities, skills, and competences for their inner development. Theoretical implications and practical recommendations are provided based on the findings of the research.

L’étude des pratiques religieuses du monde artisanal grec antique (de l’époque archaïque à l’époque hellénistique) vise à appréhender les artisans, non en tant que producteurs de biens matériels, mais en tant qu’acteurs de la vie religieuse. Il s’agit d’examiner, par le biais des données archéologiques, les conditions sociales et psychologiques de la production, de manière à mettre en évidence des pratiques qui ne relèvent plus de la technique mais de la sphère religieuse. L’enquête s’étend dans trois domaines. Tout d’abord celui de la cité : les données relatives aux fêtes civiques, aux pratiques votives ou encore aux consultations oraculaires attestent la place des artisans dans la vie religieuse de la polis grecque. La recherche se poursuit dans les espaces de travail artisanal : des lieux d’extraction aux ateliers urbains, les espaces artisanaux livrent des témoignages aussi riches que diversifiés. Enfin, l’enquête s’achève dans le domaine funéraire : l’étude des tombes d’artisans aborde leur rapport à la mort.Les pratiques cultuelles, magico-religieuses ou encore funéraires sont autant de phénomènes religieux abordés dans cette étude. Tous ces aspects sont certes illustrés par des indices pour la plupart discrets et épars : leur accumulation n’en forme pas moins un ensemble cohérent qui dessine peu à peu un nouveau profil du monde artisanal avec des spécificités religieuses mais aussi culturelles et sociales. Touche par touche se constitue ainsi un portrait vivant et coloré des acteurs du monde artisanal qui sort un peu de l’ombre le « héros secret de l’histoire grecque ». / The inquiry about the religious practices in the ancient greek craft’s world (from archaic to Hellenistic period) aims to approach craftsmen, not as producers of material goods, but as actors of the religious life. The claim is to examine, by means of the archaeological data, the social and psychological conditions of the production, and to highlight practices which are not any more a matter of technique but of religious sphere. The inquiry extends over three fields. The first one concerns the Polis : the data relative to festivals, to votive or to oraculare practices give evidence of the place of craftsmen in the religious life of the greek Polis. The research continues into the work’s spaces: from the quarries to the urban workshops, the work places supply many testimonies as wealthy as diversified. Finally, the inquiry ends in the funeral field : the study of the craftsman’s graves moves on their relationship to death.The worship, the magico-religious ritual and the funeral practices are as many religious phenomena investigated in this book. All these aspects are certainly illustrated by, for the most part, discreet and scattered clues : their accumulation nevertheless forms a coherent set which draws little by little a new profile of the craft’s world not only with religious, but also cultural and social specificities. Touch by touch a portrait of the craftsmen is appearing alive and colored which somewhat pulls out the shadow the " secret hero of the greek history ".

Descreve e analisa elementos da consciência política, através de sete dimensões, conforme proposto por Sandoval (1994), sendo elas: identidade coletiva; crenças, valores e expectativas; interesses antagônicos e adversários, eficácia política; sentimentos de justiça e injustiça; vontade de agir coletivamente e ações e objetivos do movimento social. Para contribuir nesta discussão foram apresentadas articulações teóricas sobre a economia solidária, a compreensão do sujeito, movimentos sociais e consciência política. A pesquisa consiste em um estudo de caso de cunho exploratório, cujos dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas individuais, grupos focais e observações do pesquisador. Os empreendimentos selecionados foram: Coopertan - Cooperativa de Produção de Material Reciclável de Tangará da Serra-MT e a Artetan - Associação dos Artesões de Tangará da Serra-MT. A análise consistiu em categorizar os discursos dos sujeitos através das dimensões da consciência política. Os resultados apontam que os empreendimentos são um espaço possível de politizar a sobrevivência através da prática da autogestão e da formação que ela demanda; que as identidades em geral são construídas através de relações de parentesco e de liberdade no trabalho e que a luta dos cooperados é contra o sistema capitalista que os exclui do mercado de trabalho. Indicam também que eles encontram, nos espaços do empreendimento, significativo apoio e solidariedade. Esse trabalho, que compartilha da própria vida, evidenciou aspectos da formação política engendrada na esfera do trabalho, ou seja, uma politização da e para a sobrevivência. / The dissertation discusses the solidary economy with focus on political awareness of individual participants in the social economy enterprises. It describes and analyzes this political consciousness through seven dimensions as proposed by Sandoval (1994), like: the collective identity issue; beliefs, values and expectations; conflicting interests and opponents; political effectiveness; justice and injustice feelings; wish of acting collectively and the social movement actions and aims. It was presented some theoretical articulations of the solidarity economy to contribute to this discussion, the question on the understanding of the subjetct, some theories on social movements and, finally, on political consciousness. The research consists in an exploratory case study, whose data were collected through individual interviews, focus groups and observations. The selected groups were: Coopertan - Production Cooperative of Recyclable Material of Tangara da Serra, MT and Artetan - Craftsmen Association of Tangara-MT. The analysis consisted of categorizing the speeches by the dimensions of the political consciousness. The results indicate that the enterprises are a possible space of politicizing the survival, through self-management and training; identities are often constructed through relations of kinship and freedom at work and the struggle of cooperative members is against the capitalist system, that excludes them from the labor market. Also indicate there are, in enterprises, spaces of support and solidarity. This essay which shares the own life has presented policy formation aspects, i.e., a politicization of and for the survival.

Cette étude analyse quatorze autobiographies d'artisans allemands qui ont relaté les expériences professionnelles et sociales qu'ils ont faites entre 1730 et1815. Outre ces textes qui constituent le support principal du travail, des ouvrages contemporains qui s'adressaient à ce public spécifique des artisans ont été pris en considération: manuels, catéchismes, guides de voyage, réponses à des questions académiques, recensions des autobiographies imprimées. Un de nos objectifs est de préciser notre connaissance de la réalité sociale des artisans et de leurs confrontations aux débats de l'époque, puis aux changements économiques induits par les guerres révolutionnaires et napoléoniennes. Un autre objectif est 'examiner la marginalité de ces quelques artisans qui, sans être des professionnels de l'écriture, ont entrepris de témoigner de leurs expériences du tour, de détailler leurs relations à leur famille ou encore les étapes de leur éducation. Une lecture diachronique des sources a permis de déceler trois générations d'artisans autobiographes, dont les enjeux idéologiques, les valeurs et les pratiques d'écriture ont nettement évolué, tout en conservant des constantes. Un texte de 1750 a été appréhendé ici comme l'idéal-type d'une première génération. La deuxième phase regroupe des artisans adeptes des Lumières tardives, fiers de leur niveau d'éducation; ayant vécu avant ou pendant la Révolution française, ils étaient directement touchés par les débats concernant l'avenir des corporations. La troisième génération est celle d'auteurs mettant l'accent sur leur compagnonnage et leur tour, et esthétisant davantage leurs relations. / This study analyses fourteen autobiographies of German craftsmen who related their professional and social experience made from 1730 to 1815. Besides these papers which are the main support of the work, contemporary works meant for this specific public of craftsmen were taken into account: handbooks, catechism, tour guides, answers to academic questions, collect of printed autobiographies. One of our aims is to make clear our knowledge of the social reality of craftsmen, their confrontation with debates of their time and the economic changes ensued from the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Another objective is the examination of these few craftsmen who lived on the fringe of society and, without being professionals in writing, undertook to give an account for what they experienced on the tour, and to give details on their relationship with their families or the stages in their training. When operating a diachronic lecture of the sources, we found three generations of autobiographical craftsmen whose ideological stakes, values and writing practice have distinctly developed while keeping stable traits. We apprehended a paper dating back to 1750 as the typical ideal of a first generation. The second phase contains craftsmen followers of the late Enlightenment and proud of their educational standard; living before or during the French Revolution, the debates about the future of their corporate bodies concerned them directly. The third generation consists of authors who emphasize on their guild and their tour, giving their relationships an aesthetic point of view. / Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Studie haben wir uns entschieden, uns auf eine bestimmte Form von Selbstzeugnissen (écrit du for privé) zu konzentrieren: die Autobiographien von Handwerkern. Diese Texte verbinden persönliche, berufliche und soziale Erfahrungen, die sie im Zeitraum zwischen 1731 und 1815 machten. Zwei Fragestellungen können somit miteinander verbunden werden: die Zugehörigkeit zur Welt des Handwerks einerseits, das autobiographische Schreiben andererseits. Das Auswerten der herangezogenen Quellen im Rahmen einer kulturgeschichtlichen Herangehensweise wirft zugleich die Fragen auf, welche Bilder die Handwerker von ihrer eigenen Person, ihrem unmittelbaren Umfeld, also größtenteils vom Handwerk, aber auch von der Gesellschaft im Ganzen haben und auf welche Art und Weise sie diese in ihren Autobiographien umsetzen. Wenn man solche Dokumente analysiert, ist es unerlässlich, wie Sylvie Mouysset und François-Joseph Ruggiu betonen, seine Forschung gleichzeitig am Schnittpunkt von drei Ebenen anzusetzen: die Ebene der sozialen Verhältnisse, der individuellen Erfahrungen sowie die Ebene der schriftlichen Äußerung in den Texten857. Im Kontext dieser Handwerkerautobiographien rückt zum einen die sozialgeschichtliche Perspektive bezüglich des vielseitigen Spektrums der Handwerksberufe in den Blick, andererseits eine kulturgeschichtliche Perspektive, angesichts der Bedeutung familiärer und erziehungsbedingter Variablen. Wir müssen diese beiden Dimensionen und die Tatsache, dass die Autoren ihre Zugehörigkeit zum Handwerk aufzeigen; in Betracht ziehen, um den Moment zu analysieren, an dem die Autoren zur schriftlichen Aufzeichnung übergehen.

A partir do estudo de caso da Irmandade de São José do Recife, esta dissertação tenta compreender como os oficiais mecânicos carpinteiros, pedreiros, marceneiros e tanoeiros estavam organizados profissionalmente e como esses trabalhadores eram valorados na vila do Recife, ao longo do século XVIII. Trata-se de um século muito importante para o Recife, pois é nessa centúria que ele vivencia uma intensa expansão urbana, e busca seu estabelecimento como vila, investindo, sobremaneira, em sua materialidade. Com o setor construtivo extremamente aquecido e o mercado de trabalho em ampliação, os oficiais mecânicos dos quatro ofícios anexos do Recife unem-se e fundam uma confraria religiosa sob o patrocínio de São José, em 1735. Assim, acreditamos ser esta confraria, a Irmandade de São José, um espaço privilegiado para melhor compreendermos como esses profissionais estavam organizados no Recife setecentista e o papel que tiveram nesse particular contexto. Trata-se de um estudo embasado na História Social, que teve como objetivo principal identificar possíveis mudanças na organização desses trabalhadores no decorrer do século XVIII, principalmente, a partir do governo pombalino, quando a capitania de Pernambuco recebe um novo incremento em sua economia. / Based on the case study of the Irmandade de São José (Brotherhood of Saint Joseph), in Recife, this dissertation aims to understand how the craftsmen carpenters, masons, joiners, and coopers were professionally organized, and how these workers were perceived in the town of Recife during the 18th century. This century is very significant to Recife, provided that at that time the city experiences a strong urban growth and pursues being established as a town, investing great efforts in material aspects. With an extremely heated construction industry and expanding labor market, the craftsmen from these four occupations attached to Recife joined and founded a religious confraternity under the patronage of Saint Joseph, in 1735. Then we believe that such confraternity, the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph, is a privileged spot to understand how these craftsmen were organized in the Recife of the eighteenth century, and the role they performed in this context. This study is grounded on Social History and mainly intends to identify likely changes in the organization of these workers over the 18th century, especially after the Pombal government, when the captaincy of Pernambuco received a further increase in its economy.

The main hypothesis is that culture contributes to the structuring of the urban network passing by different geographical scales. As auxiliary hypothesis, it is argued that Garantido and Caprichoso urban functions give the Parintins linking itself with the cities of the urban network of Solimões and Amazon rivers, as well as supra-regional urban networks. Considering the assumptions of the concept of cultural industry, held a roadmap of semiopen, whereby members and old fans of bumbás were interviewed, as well as 59 artists and craftsmen, 38 costumes (19 in each bumbá) and 21 from allegories (11 in Garantido and 10 in Caprichoso). It was also conducted field observations and the data were gathered in a Field Journal and attached to oral stories and literature sources. The analysis of the empirical universe could understand that bumbás emerged in the second decade of the twentieth century, in Parintins, marking the period known as "Bull Street", when these amusements played in backyards and out through the streets by staging the sale of the ox tongue. With the rivalry growing between the bumbás, which also influenced the morphology of the town, materializing in bodily conflict, the dispute has been transposed to the field of aesthetic competition in what is called the "Ox arena", establishing a new phase of the trajectory of bumbás, the "Ox show." This is the moment when the bumbás are integrated into the capitalist market setting, thus, efforts to professionalize the revelers and artists who were volunteers until 1990. This process has brought in its wake the planning series of artworks, as well as the transformation of the "Ox arena" to showcase these works, which marked the completion of free time and consequent wage human resources. This aesthetic improvement was consolidated with a hierarchy of artistic work in bumbás with allegories artist-craftsmen at the top, and costumes artists-craftsmen at the base. It is analyzes whether this hierarchy gives urban functions to Parintins, expressing, and simultaneously, feeding itself an urban hierarchy from activities such as production, distribution and asset management services and cultural events. There is still a labor-relations between artistic work Parintins sets and other cities of the non-hierarchical or complementarily at the regional level. It was found that, under the influence of the "Ox arena" as a showcase for labor-artwork, Parintins has strengthened its relations at the local, regional and extended to the supra-regional level, thus confirming the configuration and overlapping multiple networks generated by flows of artists in multiple geographic scales. / O principal objetivo desta dissertação é de compreender como a cultura participa na estruturação da rede urbana, a partir de um estudo empírico dos Bois-bumbás de Parintins- Am. A hipótese principal é de que a cultura contribui com a estruturação da rede urbana perpassando diferentes escalas geográficas. Como hipótese auxiliar, argumenta-se que Garantido e Caprichoso conferem funções urbanas à Parintins articulando-a com as cidades da rede urbana dos rios Solimões e Amazonas, bem como das redes urbanas supra-regionais. Considerando os pressupostos do conceito de indústria cultural, realizou-se um roteiro de entrevistas semi-aberto, mediante o qual foram entrevistados membros e antigos torcedores dos bumbás, bem como 59 artistas-artesãos, sendo 38 de fantasias (19 em cada bumbá) e 21 de alegorias (11 no Garantido e 10 no Caprichoso). Realizou-se também observação de campo, cujos dados foram reunidos em um Diário de Campo, e coadunados aos relatos orais e fontes bibliográficas. A análise desse universo empírico permitiu compreender que os bumbás surgiram na segunda década do século XX, em Parintins, marcando o período denominado “Boi de rua”, quando esses folguedos brincavam nos quintais e saíam pelas ruas encenando a venda da língua do boi. Com o crescimento da rivalidade entre os bumbás, que, inclusive, influenciou na morfologia urbana da cidade, materializando-se em conflitos corporais, a disputa foi transposta para o campo da competição estética no que se denominou de “Boi de arena”, estabelecendo-se uma nova fase da trajetória dos bumbás, o “Boi espetáculo”. Trata-se do momento em que os bumbás se integram ao mercado capitalista estabelecendo, com isso, esforços para a profissionalização de brincantes e artistas que até 1990 prestavam-lhes serviços voluntários. Esse processo trouxe em seu bojo o planejamento em série dos trabalhos artísticos, bem como a transformação do “Boi de arena” em vitrine desses trabalhos, o que marcou o preenchimento do tempo livre e conseqüente assalariamento dos recursos humanos. Esse aperfeiçoamento estético consolidou-se com uma hierarquia de trabalho artístico nos bumbás, com artistas-artesãos de alegorias no topo, e artistas-artesãos de figurinos na base. Analisa-se se essa hierarquia confere funções urbanas a Parintins, expressando e, simultaneamente, retroalimentando-se de uma hierarquia urbana a partir de atividades como produção, distribuição e gestão de bens e manifestações culturais. Verifica-se ainda se a mãode- obra artística configura relações entre Parintins e outras cidades do tipo não hierárquicas ou de complementaridade a nível regional. Constatou-se que, por influência do “Boi de arena” enquanto vitrine de mão-de-obra artística, Parintins teve suas relações reforçadas na esfera local e regional, e ampliadas para o nível supra-regional, corroborando assim com a configuração e sobreposição de múltiplas redes geradas por fluxos de artistas em múltiplas escalas geográficas.

Pour Charles II, souverain malade, héritier tardif d’une fin – fin d’un siècle, fin d’une dynastie, fin du « temps de l’Espagne » –, la mise en scène du pouvoir est une nécessité majeure. Le corps du roi, par-delà l’apparence physique, est le réceptacle de la souveraineté, d’une représentation politique. Sur ce corps vêtu, la physionomie est transcendée par le vêtement et par sa fonction de reconnaissance et de légitimation. Le rôle de la parure est de forger l’image du monarque. L’expertise et le travail du fournisseur en parures, véritable architecte de l’image du roi, masquent, créent, subliment la silhouette et la figure royale. Pour travailler le rôle et le statut des fournisseurs royaux en parures sous Charles II, nous avons fondé nos analyses sur des manuscrits inédits des archives du Palais royal de Madrid. La découverte de certains documents remarquables a permis une étude en profondeur du métier des marchands et artisans attitrés de la famille du souverain. / For Charles II, ill sovereign, late heir of an end – end of a century, end of a dynasty, end of the « time of Spain » –, the representation of power is an absolute necessity. The king's body, beyond physical appearance, carries sovereignty, political representation. On this dressed body, clothing and its function of recognition and justification transcends physiognomy. Finery role is to forge the image of the monarch. Competence and work of the supplier of finery, real architect of the king's image, hide, create, sublimate king's figure and form. In order to work on the role and status of royal family suppliers of livery under Charles II, we based our analysis on original manuscripts of Madrid royal palace's archives. The discovery of some notable documents allowed a deep study of the trade of merchants and craftsmen with royal warrants.

La fabrication des artisans : socialisation et processus de médiation dans l'apprentissage de la menuiserie / The making of craftsmen : socialization and mediation process in learning joinery

Cette thèse en Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication propose de repenser la question de la transmission des métiers manuels, dans le contexte contemporain de l’artisanat en France. Nous analysons le dualisme classique entre « manuel » et « intellectuel », pour le dépasser à l’aide d’une approche théorique de l’intelligence issue de Janet et Jousse. Nous nous basons aussi sur les travaux à propos de la socialisation, notamment ceux de Dubar, pour mobiliser un modèle non-déterministe de la transmission des métiers en milieu artisanal. Afin de donner toute sa place au travail des matériaux, avec les outils, dans la socialisation professionnelle, nous proposons d’envisager son déroulement comme un processus de médiation et d’en décrire le dispositif médiatique, à la lumière du travail de Davallon. Nous présentons ensuite deux études de cas fondées sur des récits de vie, qui mettent en lumière l’ensemble des dimensions de l’expérience d’apprentissage de la menuiserie, tant en école professionnelle qu’en entreprise. Ces parcours personnels s’étalent depuis les années 1970 jusqu’au début des années 2000. Pour modéliser les effets de cette socialisation, nous développons un modèle de la fabrication de soi à partir des concepts de la psychologie du travail (Clot) et de la psychologie sociale (Bandura). Nous décrivons également des processus de médiation expliquant ces phénomènes de construction identitaire, tant par des relations sociales que par l’immersion dans un environnement professionnel. Cette thèse conduit à un autre regard sur l’apprentissage dans l’artisanat, sur les représentations sociales concernant l’école, le travail et les évolutions technologiques. / This doctoral thesis in Communication Sciences offers to rethink the question of transmission of manual trades, in the context of contemporary craft industry in France. We analyse the classical dualism between “manual” and “nonmanual”, and go further with a theoretical approach of intelligence derived from Janet and Jousse. We also base our analysis on the studies about socialization, especially from Dubar, so we can involve a non-determinist model of transmitting manual crafts. In order to recognize the importance of working with materials, tools, in occupational socialization, we propose to look at its sequence as a “process of mediation” and to describe its communication device, inspired by the work of Davallon. Then we present two case studies based on life stories, which expose all the dimensions of the experience of learning joinery, in technical college as well as in a firm. These personal experiences spread between the 1970’s to the beginning of the 2000’s. In order to model the effects of socialization, we build a theory of “the making of self” from concepts of occupational psychology (Clot) and social psychology (Bandura). We also describe mediation process explaining these phenomena of building identity, by social relations as well by submersion in an occupational background. This doctoral thesis leads to a reappraisal of apprenticeship in craft industry, of social representations about school, work and technological changes.

The effort to teach literacy and educate the people, following the principles of the present nationalism in vogue, has taken even more precise definitions. In this context, the school takes one of the most important roles, and especially the apprentice ones, have the challenge to teach literacy and discipline the fortune disadvantages. From that point of view, this research whose title is Mente amore pro patria docere: the School of Apprentice Craftsmen at Paraíba and the formation of useful citizens to the nation, is constituted by a reflexion on the trajectory of one of these apprentice schools, which is located in the city of Parahyba (present João Pessoa), between 1909, when it was created, and 1942, when it did not exist anymore, after a whole process of remodelations promoved by the Federal Government. In this space we defend the thesis that the School of Appretices at Paraíba, whose creation aimed to professionalize the disadvantaged of the luck and to produce disciplined workers, was a place of learning knowledge and inculcation of behaviors where socially excluded young people had their bodies and minds educated by the logic of the rationality of the work and of construction of the Brazilian nationality. The thesis is based on the theory of the historic materialism (MARX, 1980; MARX; ENGELS, 1984; 2004; LUKÁCS, 2003; PINTO, 1969), and in the use of the category of totatlity, dialoguing, still with the idea about school culture when we consider the closing approach of the internal functioning and the everyday in the institution analysed here. In this perspective, we consider the suggestions of Goodson (1995), Julia (2001), Frago (1995; 2005) e Souza (2000; 2010) who assure that the internal processes at the school cannot be ignored. In the present analysis we think about the set of transformations which make the changes in the Brazilian education and, more particularly, in the School of Apprentice Craftsmen at Paraíba as a place where these changes took place even being marked by conflicts and tensions. In this way we have worked with all the available legislation about professional education in the period (creation of the apprentice schools, remodelations and their extinction) as well as the management reports. Articulately we analysed the collection of fotography of the school as a possible exercise in the direction of understanding the intentions of inculcating the ideas and discussing the publications of the lectures which were organized by the teachers in the years of 1925 and 1936. / Com o advento da República, e nas primeiras décadas do século XX, a educação ocupou cada vez mais espaço na pauta de preocupações do Estado brasileiro. O esforço para alfabetizar e educar o povo, seguindo os princípios do nacionalismo em voga, ganharam contornos cada vez mais precisos. Nesse contexto, a escola assume papel dos mais importantes, e as escolas de aprendizes, em particular, assumem o desafio de alfabetizar e disciplinar os desfavorecidos da fortuna . Nessa perspectiva, este trabalho, intitulado Mente amore pro patria docere: a Escola de Aprendizes Artífices da Paraíba e a formação de cidadãos úteis à nação, constitui uma reflexão sobre a trajetória de uma dessas escolas de aprendizes, localizada na então cidade de Parahyba (atual João Pessoa), entre 1909, ano em que foi criada, e 1942, quando deixou de existir após processo de remodelações promovidas pelo Governo Federal. Aqui, defendemos a tese de que a Escola de Aprendizes da Paraíba, criada com os objetivos de profissionalizar os desfavorecidos da sorte e produzir operários disciplinados, foi um lugar de aprendizagem de saberes e de inculcação de comportamentos, onde jovens socialmente excluídos tinham seus corpos e mentes educados, segundo a lógica da racionalidade do trabalho e de construção da nacionalidade brasileira. Fundamentamos a tese nos pressupostos teóricos do materialismo histórico (MARX, 1980; MARX; ENGELS, 1984; 2004; LUKÁCS, 2003; PINTO, 1969) e na utilização da categoria de totalidade, dialogando, ainda, com a ideia de cultura escolar, no sentido de nos aproximarmos do funcionamento interno e do cotidiano da instituição aqui em estudo. Nessa perspectiva, consideramos a sugestão de Goodson (1995), Julia (2001), Frago (1995; 2005) e Souza (2000; 2010) de que os processos internos da escola não podem ser ignorados. Na análise desenvolvida, pensamos o conjunto das transformações que assinalam as mudanças na educação brasileira e, mais particualrmente, na Escola de Aprendizes Artífices da Paraíba, como um local onde tais mudanças se materializaram, ainda que marcadas por conflitos e tensões. Daí trabalharmos com toda a legislação disponível sobre educação profissional no período (criação das escolas de aprendizes, remodelações e extinção dessas), bem como dos relatórios de gestão. Articuladamente, analisamos o acervo de fotografias da Escola como um exercício possível na direção de compreendermos as pretensões de inculcar ideias e, para além disso, discutimos as publicações das palestras que foram realizadas pelos professores da Escola nos anos de 1925 e 1936.
