Thema dieser Dissertation ist die Frage, wie sich Licht und Sehen im Zuge der Elektrifizierung veränderten, und zwar aus Sicht literarischer Erzähltexte, die zwischen 1900 und 1933 publiziert wurden. Ausgangslage der Untersuchung ist erstens die These, dass durch den Einsatz des elektrischen Lichts eine Reihe neuer Wahrnehmungsdispositive entstanden, wo trotz der Lichtstärke elektrischer Leuchtmittel zwielichtige Licht- und prekäre Sichtverhältnisse herrschten. An drei besonders markanten Zwielichtszenarien der ästhetisch-technischen Moderne – Großstadt, Kino und Schützengraben – werden anhand einer breiten Quellenbasis aus Literatur, Technik, Wissenschaft, Philosophie und Ästhetik aufgezeigt, wie die Ausdifferenzierung der lichttechnischen Infrastruktur neue Blickregime und ästhetische Weltanschauungen produzierte, die ihrerseits veränderte Techniken des Sehens evozierten. Eine weitere zentrale These lautet, dass sich angesichts der prekären Licht- und Sichtverhältnisse auch die kulturelle Semantik des Lichts veränderte: die Art und Weise, wie Licht, und damit ebenso die Vorstellungen von Wahrnehmung, Wahrheit und Wirklichkeit, vor- und dargestellt wurden. Die neuen Lichtphänomene erforderten neben aisthetischen (die sinnliche Wahrnehmung betreffende) Anpassungsleistungen auch ästhetische Bewältigungsstrategien: neue Darstellungsweisen und symbolisch-metaphorische Zuschreibungen, die das zeitgenössische Wissen über Licht und Sehen gehörig in Bewegung brachte. Es entstanden virulente neue Korrelationen ‚moderner Wahrnehmung‘ zwischen technisch erzeugtem Zwielicht, epistemischer Irritation und narrativ erzeugter Visualität. Ich hoffe, mit meiner Arbeit neue Perspektiven auf die nach wie vor relevante Frage ‚moderner Wahrnehmung‘ zu werfen, die sich seit der ‚elektrischen Moderne‘ sukzessive als immer ausgeklügelteres Zusammenspiel von (Licht-)technik, aisthesis und Ästhetik neuformiert. / This dissertation focuses on how light(ing) and seeing/ perception changed in the course of electrification, from the perspective of German literature, published between 1900 and 1933. My first claim is, that the use of electric light created a series of new perceptual dispositifs, where dubious light and precarious visual conditions prevailed despite the luminous intensity of electric lighting. Three particularly striking twilight scenarios, that play a significant role in technology and aesthetics in the early 20th century, – namely the City, the Cinema, and the Trenches of WWI – are gripping settings to demonstrate, how disruptive lighting infrastructure produced new scopic regimes and innovative aesthetic perspectives (Weltanschauungen) that changed the techniques of visual perception. Drawing from a broad base of sources from literature, technology, science, philosophy, and aesthetics, I argue that the disruptive lighting technologies did not only change light phenomena, visual conditions and perception, but also transformed the cultural semantics of light substantially. Closely tied to concepts of truth, perception and reality, the rhetoric of light and lighting are dense metaphors and symbols, deeply interconnected with the history of knowledge. The new light phenomena required aisthetic (sensory perception-related) adaptations, as well as aesthetic coping strategies, like new modes of representation and symbolic-metaphorical attributions that troubled contemporary knowledge about light and visuality. My research zooms in on the visual dispositifs of ‘electric modernity’ and thus on the new correlations between technically generated twilight, epistemic irritation, and narrative visuality. By analysing the interplay of lighting and visual technology, aisthesis, and literary aesthetics in early 20th century, I hope to shed new light on the intriguing question of ‘modern perception’ that remains relevant from the beginning of the electric age until now.

Linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole

We firstly numerically recalculate the Ricci tensor of non-stationary axisymmetric space-times (originally calculated by Chandrasekhar) and we find some discrepancies both in the linear and non-linear terms. However, these discrepancies do not affect the results concerning linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. Secondly, we use these Ricci tensors to derive the Zerilli and Regge-Wheeler equations and use the Newman-Penrose formalism to derive the Bardeen-Press equation. We show the relation between these equations because they describe the same linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. Thirdly, we illustrate heuristically (when the angular momentum (l) is 2) the relation between the linearized solution of the Einstein vacuum equations obtained from the Bondi-Sachs metric and the Zerilli equation, because they describe the same linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. Lastly, by means of a coordinate transformation, we extend Chandrasekhar's results on linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole to the Bondi-Sachs framework. / Mathematical Sciences / M. Sc. The medium is the message in the first place: the medium as presence, as the author. His contribution to the academic world is his academic Holographic Memoirs. His story, the author's memoirs, is a fictive-narrative discourse with an organic ubuntu open-endedness. The Hologram is both an autobiography, but also all the information at all places simultaneously – nonlocal in quantum physical terms - within an intense hallucinating dream: no illusion, but rather a HyperReality with all its Virtual Identities. The invention of tram hopping is the plot of the story. The plot is like an hourglass where the first part of the story is the emptying of the sand, the deconstruction of modernism, but while the top chamber runs empty and the bottom chamber fills up, so the deconstruction is simultaneously a dependent arising/(social) construction/ubuntuing to revival – the synagogal Shekinah presence of YAHWEH. The top chamber is the unreasonable Newtonian physics and the bottom chamber reasonable quantum physics. The metaphysics (before the physics) of the top chamber is poststructuralism and deconstruction, while the bottom chamber is the virtual Hebraic worldview that delutively merges ubuntu and Buddhism. The long narrow neck in the middle is the moonily narrative that lives us with psychology (Psycho-logic) lost in sociology (Social-physics). Phases, Transitions, Patterns, And Excitations In Generalized Bose-Hubbard Models

This thesis covers most of my work in the field of ultracold atoms loaded in optical lattices. This thesis can be divided into five different parts. In Chapter 1, after a brief introduction to the field of optical lattices I review the fundamental aspects pertaining to the physics of systems in periodic potentials and a short overview of the experiments on ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. In Chapter 2 we develop an inhomogeneous mean-field theory for the extended Bose-Hubbard model with a quadratic, confining potential. In the absence of this poten¬tial, our mean-field theory yields the phase diagram of the homogeneous extended Bose-Hubbard model. This phase diagram shows a superfluid (SF) phase and lobes of Mott-insulator(MI), density-wave(DW), and supersolid (SS) phases in the plane of the chemical potential and on-site repulsion ; we present phase diagrams for representative values of , the repulsive energy for bosons on nearest-neighbor sites. We demonstrate that, when the confining potential is present, superfluid and density-wave order parameters are nonuniform; in particular, we obtain, for a few representative values of parameters, spherical shells of SF, MI ,DW ,and SSphases. We explore the implications of our study for experiments on cold-atom dipolar con¬densates in optical lattices in a confining potential. In Chapter3 we present an extensive study of Mottinsulator( MI) and superfluid (SF) shells in Bose-Hubbard (BH) models for bosons in optical lattices with har¬monic traps. For this we develop an inhomogeneous mean-field theory. Our results for the BH model with one type of spinless bosons agrees quantitatively with quan¬tum Monte Carlo(QMC) simulations. Our approach is numerically less intensive than such simulations, so we are able to perform calculations on experimentally realistic, large three-dimensional(3D) systems, explore a wide range of parameter values, and make direct contact with a variety of experimental measurements. We also generalize our inhomogeneous mean-field theory to study BH models with har¬monic traps and(a) two species of bosons or(b) spin-1bosons. With two species of bosons we obtain rich phase diagrams with a variety of SF and MI phases and as¬sociated shells, when we include a quadratic confining potential. For the spin-1BH model we show, in a representative case, that the system can display alternating shells of polar SF and MI phases; and we make interesting predictions for experi¬ments in such systems. . In Chapter 4 we carry out an extensive study of the phase diagrams of the ex-tended Bose Hubbard model, with a mean filling of one boson per site, in one dimension by using the density matrix renormalization group and show that it contains Superfluid (SF), Mott-insulator (MI), density-wave (DW) and Haldane ¬insulator(HI) phases. We show that the critical exponents and central charge for the HI-DW,MI-HI and SF-MI transitions are consistent with those for models in the two-dimensional Ising, Gaussian, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) uni¬versality classes, respectively; and we suggest that the SF-HI transition may be more exotic than a simple BKT transition. We show explicitly that different bound¬ary conditions lead to different phase diagrams.. In Chapter 5 we obtain the excitation spectra of the following three generalized of Bose-Hubbard(BH) models:(1) a two-species generalization of the spinless BH model, (2) a single-species, spin-1 BH model, and (3) the extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBH) for spinless interacting bosons of one species. In all the phases of these models we show how to obtain excitation spectra by using the random phase approximation (RPA). We compare the results of our work with earlier studies of related models and discuss implications for experiments.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in Synthetic Gauge Fields and Spaces: Quantum Transport, Dynamics, and Topological States

<p>Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in light-induced synthetic gauge fields and spaces can provide a highly-tunable platform for quantum simulations. Chapter 1 presents a short introduction to the concepts of BECs and our BEC machine. Chapter 2 introduces some basic ideas of how to use light-matter interactions to create synthetic gauge fields and spaces for neutral atoms. Three main research topics of the thesis are summarized below.</p> <p>Chapter 3: Recently, using bosonic quasiparticles (including their condensates) as spin carriers in spintronics has become promising for coherent spin transport over macroscopic distances. However, understanding the effects of spin-orbit (SO) coupling and many-body interactions on such a spin transport is barely explored. We study the effects of synthetic SO coupling (which can be turned on and off, not allowed in usual materials) and atomic interactions on the spin transport in an atomic BEC.</p> <p>Chapter 4: Interplay between matter and fields in physical spaces with nontrivial geometries can lead to phenomena unattainable in planar spaces. However, realizing such spaces is often impeded by experimental challenges. We synthesize real and curved synthetic dimensions into a Hall cylinder for a BEC, which develops symmetry-protected topological states absent in the planar counterpart. Our work opens the door to engineering synthetic gauge fields in spaces with a wide range of geometries and observing novel phenomena inherent to such spaces.</p> <p>Chapter 5: Rotational properties of a BEC are important to study its superfluidity. Recent studies have found that SO coupling can change a BEC's rotational and superfluid properties, but this topic is barely explored experimentally. We study rotational dynamics of a SO-coupled BEC in an effective rotating frame induced by a synthetic magnetic field. Our work may allow for studying how SO coupling modify a BEC's rotational and superfluid properties.</p> <p>Chapter 6 presents some possible future directions.</p>

Nous nous intéressons dans cette thèse à un aspect assez peu documenté de l'histoire de la théorie de la relativité restreinte, la recherche d'une vérification expérimentale de ses prédictions sur la variation de l'inertie en fonction de leur vitesse. Nous complétons les études historiques antérieures sur les expériences de Kaufmann (1906) et de Bucherer (1908), et montrons que la vérification de la formule de Lorentz-Einstein constitue encore un enjeu expérimental après 1911. Nous étudions plus particulièrement les recherches dirigées par Charles-Eugène Guye en collaboration avec ses étudiants Simon Ratnowsky (1907-1910) et Charles Lavanchy (1913-1915). Nous montrons que la seconde phase de ce travail est très largement considérée dans les années 1920 comme la vérifiation expérimentale la plus précise de la formule de Lorentz-Einstein. Nous utilisons la méthode de réplication, appliquée à l'expérience de Guye et Lavanchy. La très grande maîtrise de l'émission cathodique, associée à une méthode d'investigation spécifique, leur permet de surmonter toutes les difficultés identifiées alors comme préjudiciables au succès de ce type d'expérience. / We focus on an aspect of the history of special relativity theory that has not received much attention yet, namely the search for an experimental verification of the relativistic velocity dependency of inertia. Former historical studies on Kaufmann's 1906 and Bucherer's 1908 experiments are pursued. It is shown that verifying Lorentz-Einstein's formula is still a challenge after 1911. We concentrate here on Charles-Eugène Guye's works with students Simon Ratnowsky (1907-1910) and Charles Lavanchy (1913-1915). The second experiment is shown to be considered as the most precise verification of Lorentz-Einstein's formula by a large number of 1920s physicists. The replication method is used to probe Guye and Lavanchy's experiment. They are able to solve every then known difficulty in successfully performing such an experiment, through a great mastership of the crucial issue of cathode ray emission, together with a specific investigation method.

Contribution à la Théorie des Gaz Dilués-Dégénérés

Nous décrivons une approche théorique nouvelle pour étudier des gaz dilués-dégénérés, le formalisme des opérateurs d'Ursell. Nous déterminons la fonction de partition d'un gaz quantique en deux étapes. Dans un premier temps les interactions sont traitées pour un système auxiliaire de particules discernables dans une approximation de faible densité (le rapport entre portée du potentiel et distance moyenne entre particules étant beaucoup plus petit que l'unité). En second lieu la statistique quantique est introduite; aucune approximation n'est nécessaire pendant cette étape ce qui permet le traitement des gaz dégénérés. Il nous est possible de déduire des expressions des opérateurs densité réduits à partir du potentiel thermodynamique. Nous sommes alors en mesure d'étudier des systèmes macroscopiques à l'échelle microscopique. Nous aboutissons à une expression de la fonction de corrélation d'un système de sphères dures qui reproduit les « bonnes » propriétés physiques même à courte distance, un grand avantage par rapport au méthodes habituelles du type de champ moyen. Nous déterminons des expressions des quantités macroscopiques diverses dans une approximation valable pour des systèmes à faible densité (formule de Beth-Uhlenbeck généralisée). Le potentiel d'interaction y intervient par l'intermédiaire d'un nouveau paramètre, la longueur d'Ursell. Une comparaison de nos resultats avec ceux de la théorie des pseudopotentiels démontre que cette dernière donne une image acceptable des phénomènes pour des bosons. En revanche, pour des fermions, nous trouvons une différence importante: à température suffisamment basse, même des potentiels entièrement repulsives donnent lieu à une attraction effective. Nous effectuons également une étude numérique sur la dépendance de la température critique de condensation de Bose-Einstein d'un gaz de sphère dures bosoniques en fonction de la densité. Notre calcul des intégrales de chemin par une méthode Monte Carlo montre que cette température augmente par rapport à celle du gaz parfait à basse densité (maximal d'un facteur 1.07).

Celles-ci peuvent apparaître dans les supraconducteurs<br />ou les gaz d'atomes froids fermioniques en présence d'une différence<br />homogène de potentiels chimiques entre les deux états de spin.<br />Nous regardons la compétition<br />entre les différentes phases FFLO près de la transition.<br />A 2D, nous utilisons une approche de type Ginzburg-Landau <br />pour prédire une cascade de transitions entre des phases inhomogènes<br />de plus en plus complexes.<br />A 3D ou la transition FFLO est du premier ordre, <br />nous présentons une méthode numérique <br />de résolution des équations quasiclassiques d'Eilenberger <br />basée sur un développement de Fourier. <br />Nous déterminons ainsi les phases inhomogènes de plus basse énergie.<br /><br />Dans la seconde partie, nous étendons la théorie perturbative<br />de Bogoliubov aux quasicondensats dans une représentation densité-phase.<br />Nous obtenons des prédictions pour différentes observables.
