W. Morrisovo dílo The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs ve srovnání s J. R. R. Tolkienovým The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún / A Comparison of William Morris' The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs and J. R. R. Tolkien's The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún

Hlavatá, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the formal and stylistic analysis and comparison of two works written by English authors, namely William Morris' poem The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs (1876) and J. R. R. Tolkien's poetic work The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún (published posthumously in 2009) with respect to how each of these works deals with the original Old Norse motives which they are based on. Both Sigurd the Volsung and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún can be described as poetic adaptations of the Old Norse tale of Sigurd Fafnisbani, which is recounted in the Saga of the Volsungs and in a cycle of poems found in the Poetic Edda. Both Morris and Tolkien borrowed this story to use it in their own works, yet each of them treats it in a different manner. Therefore, not only do both of the works differ from the original Old Norse texts on multiple levels, but they also differ one from another. The differences between them can be traced in the metrical properties of the individual poems, for instance, or in the use of specific stylistic elements. From this, it can be inferred that although it was the goal of both authors to evoke the atmosphere of the legendary heroic past where Sigurd's story takes place, each of them attempts to do so in a different way. This is probably caused by...

Bello, Marieni January 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical activity programs for elder people developed by the City Council of Porto Alegre, RS. The research was carried out in the Foundation of Social Attendance and Citizenship - FASC and the Secretary of Sports, Recreation and Leisure – SME, responsible institutions for the planning and execution of physical activities programs for elder people in the city. These programs assist about 3500 people, organized in 58 groups, and offer gymnastics, stretching classes, adapted games, dancing and walking. The study was qualitative of the descriptive type with intentional sample. Data collection used semistructured interviews, document analysis and questionnaire. There were interviewed 14 coordinators and 7 teachers. Document analysis considered 28 materials, among projects, resolutions, informative prospects and reports. The questionnaire with open and close questions was applied to 205 people. Analysis levels were built for the interviews and the evaluation of the documents. The data of the questionnaires received statistical treatment with the PSS and nonparametric procedures of analysis, frequencies and percentages were used. The results indicated that the lack of human resources and materials interfere in the implementation of the programs. The number of participants in the physical activities is still inexpressive front to the elder population of Porto Alegre. In this respect, the programs cannot be characterized as a comprehensive public policy. In relation to the preventive actions of chronic-degenerative diseases that affect the elder people, the actions occur more from involved professionals' initiative than for institutional policies. On the other hand, the work developed by the studied institutions reverts in benefits for the participant population. This suggests a public policy of physical activity capable to embrace a significant part of the elder population, since many of the chronic-degenerative diseases could be avoided or controlled with the aim physical activity.

Tais intervenções têm o propósito de otimizar a assistência prestada, os recursos investidos sejam eles humanos, materiais ou financeiros, diminuir as readmissões hospitalares e promover melhoria na qualidade de vida do idoso e sua família / It is a study with quantitative approach, with retrospective descriptive and transversal profile, having as objective to characterize elders in situation of hospital readmission, to associate such characteristics to closing of readmission and to discuss the implications to the Gerontology Nursing. The research was performed at a university hospital, located in Niterói, RJ. The subjects were 94 patients who were 60 years old or more and that, between January and December 2010, had experienced hospital readmission in medical clinical wards. The age average was 72.3 ± 10.7 years, male elderly patients, from the Niterói/ RJ; married, with an average of 2.8 ± 2.4 sons and family composition of 2.8 ± 1.1 persons, retired and with family caretaker. The prevailing illnesses were cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neoplastic and respiratory. Most of the elders had up to 2 comorbidities; the time of hospital stay was of 19.9 ± 18.8 days; institutionalization average in 4 years was of 2 institutionalizations, generally occurring in last 12 months preceding the last institutionalization; most of elders presented partial or total dependency of the Nursing cares, did not received guidelines from the Nursing for the hospital discharging, had follow-up through the hospital ambulatory and used emergency services between the institutionalizations. The mentioned population requires more Nursing care and, therefore, a better knowledge of the aging process and singularities of the multiple-pathology elders care-taking. Risk factors of the readmission among identified elders have been previous institutionalization in the last year and the term of hospital stay from 8 up to 30 days. The results of this investigation provide subsidies to the planning of health attention programs to the elders in the hospital context and to community follow up. It is recommended the qualification of health professionals and implantation of hospital discharge, based in educative actions that promote self-care, as well as guidelines to the care-takers, in an integrated way in relation to the other levels of care-taking. Such interventions have the objective to optimize the assistance offered and the resources invested – being humane, material or financial -, to reduce hospital readmissions and to promote the improvement in life quality of elders and their families

"There probably are hidden numbers in the statistics, but I don’t know." : A qualitative study of how unit managers and care personnel construct their understanding of elder abuse in Swedish elderly care.

Johansson, Anna-Maria, Wilner, Jeanette January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to highlight and analyze how the understanding of elder abuse is phrased, enunciated and socially constructed by unit managers and care personnel in elderly care. Despite being globally recognized as a social problem, elder abuse is an under-researched field. The data collection consists of eight qualitative and semistructured interviews with unit manager and care personnel in swedish elderly care. The study has been analyzed by applying a theoretical framework consisting of social constructivism, ageism and role concepts. The results of the study shows that unit manager and care personnel has the tools and ambition to notice and perceive elder abuse. The results also shows that the lack of an coherent definition of elder abuse has an influence in how the phenomenon is constructed by care personnel.

Puppy Valley: An App-Mediated Board Game to Enhance Scam And Fraud Awareness Among US Seniors

Prince Owusu Attah (10731960) 05 May 2021 (has links)

Scams and fraud have become a significant problem for the American population within the past few years. While victims range from young to older adults, it is the seniors who are the major targets. In 2018 the Federal Trade Commission reported that senior citizens aged 60 years and above formed 35% of all the scam victims it recorded. According to the U.S Senate Committee on aging, scams like the grandparent scam, IRS impersonation scam, romance scam; have become popular. Even at this level of notoriety, most victims are usually unaware of it entirely or how its perpetrators commit these crimes. Being aware of the situation is a critical step towards curbing this problem. This thesis project uses User-Centered Design (UCD) to understand, conceptualize, and prototype a solution to promote social interaction while improving the cognitive abilities of seniors and creating awareness about fraud. The design requirements and direction were formed through multivariate research methods like literature review, user interviews, and focus group sessions. The proposed solution is Puppy valley, an app-mediated trivia board game that has a physical wheel and mobile application and uses narratives inspired by real fraud cases to create activities for users to play with. After the research and design, the game was evaluated by five experts, and refinements within the scope of the study were made based on the insights from the evaluation.

When Ye Are Assembled Together: Congregational Patterns and Worship Practices of the Early Latter-day Saints 1829-1846

Johnson, Matthew 01 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The worship experience in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is inextricably linked to the ward or branch. This thesis examines the development of the Latter-day Saint congregation at the church centers from 1829 to 1846: Palmyra and Fayette, New York; Harmony, Pennsylvania; Kirtland, Ohio; Independence, Liberty and Far West in Missouri; and Nauvoo, Illinois. This work not only documents the creation and development of congregations, but also gives attention to the other important elements developed during the early years that are still associated with modern Latter-day Saint wards: meeting and worship patterns, physical locations where meetings took place, and leadership of local branches and wards. More on parameters and purpose is spelled out in Chapter 1.Each of the next three chapters deals with a time period and place, tracking all four of the elements of emphasis through an era. Chapter 2 briefly discusses meetings and groups before the official organization of the Church, and then continues on to consider the developments made in the three areas considered as Church centers: Fayette and Palmyra in New York and Harmony, Pennsylvania. The bulk of Chapter 2, however, deals with Kirtland, Ohio, which was headquarters for the Church for much of the 1830s.The three counties in Missouri that held the highest concentration of Saints-Jackson, Clay and Caldwell-are the area of study for Chapter 3. Eventually driven not only from all of these counties but also the state of Missouri, the Saints moved on to Illinois, the subject of Chapter 4. Quincy, Illinois was briefly considered the Church center until the purchase of the land that became Nauvoo. The final chapter synthesizes each of the four topics: congregational organization, meeting patterns, local leadership, and meeting places. Consequently, it is a brief overview of what advancements were made across all years and places studied in each area of focus.
