A PLAUSIBILITY PROBE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOCAL INTEGRATION AND REFUGEE RELATED VIOLENCE. : Cases from countries piloting the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework in Africa.

Nyende, Keith Mark January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, the author attempts to establish whether there is evidence supportive of an implicit postulation in scholarship on refugee local integration suggesting a relationship between refugee local integration and refugee related violence. Employing integrated education service as a proxy for refugee local integration, the thesis carries a plausibility probe of a hypothesis stating that “Refugee local integration provides avenues for interdependent interactions that contribute to the mitigation of refugee related violence”. The hypothesis is constructed with the aid of scholarship on intergroup relations, particularly: social identity theory and realistic group theory. To carry out the plausibility probe, the author employs the case study method of Structured Focused Comparison to compile and analyse research data on the cases of CRRF implementing countries, Kenya and Uganda, that is later compared. The thesis concludes that there is evidence indicative of a relationship between local integration and refugee related violence. However, its only through further studies, disaggregating the various components of local integration and refugee related violence, that the afore mentioned relation can be confirmed.

The R Word: Race and Racism at the Swedish Radio

Karlsson, Johanna Lill-Inger Fredrika January 2021 (has links)
Race is a taboo subject — and word — in Swedish culture, and the Swedish news media is no exception. During recent years, however, the topic of race and racism has started to be discussed moreand more in the mainstream. Following the global uprisings against (anti-Black) racism and policeviolence during the summer of 2020, the many organizations also in Sweden were pressured to confronttheir own racist histories and deep-seated structures of oppression. In 2020, a petition againststructural racism at the Swedish Radio (SR) was released, taking a stand against racism within thecompany and signed by many journalists of color in the organization. After the release of the petition, it was revealed that journalists that signed the petition had been banned from reporting oncertain topics.Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, this thesis examines the circulation and proliferationof racism within a prolific Swedish media institution, through the experiences of racialized journalists. With a theoretical grounding in Sara Ahmed’s phenomenology, racism is examined as it isencountered in the daily working lives of journalists of color. Additionally, two op-eds published bythe senior management at the Swedish Radio, responding to the petition, are analyzed using critical discourse analysis, to make visible how an institution of journalism such as a the Swedish Radioresponds to accusations of racism. This study finds that, despite an organization’s outward commitment to diversity, journalists of color find themselves in a double bind: being considered not objective enough, and sometimesbeing stopped from, reporting on certain topics because of their race, while simultaneously feeling responsible for racially diversifying reporting: making sure certain topics receive news coverage at all. This study argues for a more “color-aware” approach to journalism in Sweden, taking theimplications of race and institutional racism into account.

Labour market integration of highly educated refugees in Sweden : Why are they mismatched?

Flemark, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
This paper investigates occupational mismatch of highly educated refugees in Sweden and aims to study what factors are impacting their labour market integration process. In contrast to the extensive number of quantitative reports based on registered data in the field, this research applies a qualitative approach by conducting interviews with the target group and incorporating a temporal aspect of the process. The results confirm existing theories such as human capital deficit, lack of social capital and signalling issues, but also indicates that contextual factors, being family demands and financial pressure, affect the process. An openness towards a change of field and lack of guidance from authorities emerged as factors for mismatch too. Lastly, feelings of stress and frustration seems to influence the process to a big extent which leads us to the conclusion that the labour market integration process of educated refugees is highly influenced by the aspect of time - and more specifically the lack of it.

An examination of the intercultural outcome of a policy of educational division based on spoken language : the case of educational policy in Vukovar, Croatia

Tasovac, Masa 01 January 2010 (has links)
A four-year war in Croatia in the early nineties left Eastern Slavonia and the Vukovar region struggling with the consequences of inter-ethnic conflict and human suffering. Poorly addressed post-ethnic reconciliation issues resulted in many challenges in everyday living for the people of Vukovar, especially so with the segregation of the public educational system based on language and ethnicity. This research explored the outcomes of the policy in Vukovar to divide the student body based on the language they spoke. The literature review examined issues of inter-ethnic conflict, post-war reconciliation, and the process of grieving and transition in order to define how these processes affect people involved in public schooling in Vukovar today. I have examined literature in intercultural sensitivity, intercultural conflict, reconciliation, cultural marginality, and identity formation. I compiled data through in-depth interviews with five specialists in the field of public educational system in Vukovar. They included a journalist and author, a teacher, administrators, and parents. I found the presence of slow but consistent increase in readiness for the process of rejoining schools in Vukovar. This convergence in attitudes of the majority and the minority groups regarding their public school education might be the best indicator that Vukovar is shifting from the position of grieving to a place more open to the new solutions and agreements. However, one should not forget that bringing students together is not a key to reconciliation. Even though it appears that parents and teachers have motivation and good incentives to accomplish the process of reuniting, the students themselves lack the understanding of the importance of the same. I hope that this study will provide insight into the state of affairs in Vukovar's educational system today and may provide insight into the ways of managing the larger issues of reintegration and reconciliation between the diverse cultural communities.

Let's not be afraid of Utopias : - Resistances and Solidarities from Kochi-Muziris Biennale

Kashatria, Mansi January 2020 (has links)
This thesis seeks to understand the formation and representation of local, national and international identities of nations and their societies by critically analysing a big public international art event, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. It will thus address two complex historical and theoretical problems: first, the role such biennales have had in the nation building process for several Third World countries; second, the established hierarchies in theorizations of contemporary art from the global south. By addressing these problems, it aims to illustrate the issue at the heart of this thesis: to find the praxis which can break the model of binaries and representations established in the concept of modernity.

Climate Change and Forced Migration : How Climate Refugees fit into EU Asylum Law

Tedenljung, Amanda January 2020 (has links)
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humankind and its effects will hit the most vulnerable persons disproportionately hard. Several millions of people risk displacement due to environmental hazards, natural disasters and climate mediated conflicts, influencing migration patterns across the world. Without a strategy for protecting specifically climate refugees, States risk violating several human rights, which makes the issue highly relevant to the international community. Nevertheless, an intergovernmental strategy for addressing the challenges does not yet exist. This thesis focuses specifically on the European Union’s role in protecting climate refugees. It offers an analysis of the mechanical and attitudinal dimensions of refugee protection in the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) and uses post-colonial theory as a tool for interpreting its implementation. This thesis is written with the purpose of contributing to the discourse on how climate refugees can and should fit in under current EU legislative mechanisms.

Dichotomies of Utility : Experiences of Refugee Reception and Demographic Challenges in Rural Sweden

Andersson, Axel January 2020 (has links)
In the years immediately following the so-called “refugee crisis”, Swedish municipalities that had received many refugees improved their financial position in a quite remarkable way. Overall, 2016 might have been the best financial year ever for the municipal sector. In sharp contrast to this, 2019 saw an estimated third of all municipalities run deficits. In the public debate, this has generally been explained as a result of refugee reception and integration, which are seen as major cost factors draining the municipalities of funds. Other issues which have seen less prominence in the public debate include ongoing demographic challenges stemming from birth deficits, emigration and the continued ageing of the population. These are particularly sensitive areas in the case of smaller, rural municipalities, which generally have smaller populations than the major towns and cities. The purpose of this thesis is thus to examine how municipalities within this category have experienced refugee reception and the integration process during and in the aftermath of the refugee crisis. This has been achieved through a qualitative approach centred around thematic and qualitative content analysis frameworks. Theoretical concepts based around citizenship, integration, welfare studies and macroeconomics have been consulted. The macroeconomic framework employed stems from the heterodox school of economics, primarily centred around the school of thought known as Modern Monetary Theory. The empirical material consists of various documents published by the central government, government agencies and municipalities in order to frame what has turned out to be a contradictory and conflict-ridden account of refugee reception. During the crisis, an overwhelming majority of the Swedish municipalities saw unprecedented economic growth as a result of government spending, which has since stagnated as a result of the central government returning to its pre-crisis fiscal policy framework. In 2015, the Swedish central government turned from a relatively open asylum policy towards a very restrictive one, a shift primarily motivated with reference to financial concerns. However, this turn resulted in decreased opportunities for rural municipalities to benefit from increased migration inflows, which has turned out to be a decisive factor for economic growth and demographic sustainability. The results show that municipalities that have worked actively with integration have not only managed to accommodate the sudden needs of refugees, but actively benefitted from population growth and increased tax revenue. While the ensuing result does not necessarily advocate for increased immigration, it challenges established macroeconomic principles and the presumption that a stricter migration regime would mend the financial woes of all Swedish municipalities.

Experiences of immigrant entrepreneurs in the context of the Swedish society

Ip, Kin Ting January 2020 (has links)
Immigrant entrepreneurs are seen in many societies in present days, no exception for a country like Sweden with a significant number of foreign-born populations. This thesis gets in touch with current immigrant entrepreneurs in the country to obtain first-hand experiences in the entrepreneurial process. The thesis explores the factors affecting these immigrant entrepreneurs in business establishment from the first-person point of view. Employing the mixed embeddedness approach in analysis, the thesis investigates the interactions between the immigrant entrepreneurs and the environment. Every part of the society and individual characteristics could impact the decision made by immigrant entrepreneurs regarding business establishment. The establishment of business is a result of contributions from many different elements surrounding the immigrant entrepreneur. This thesis represents some of the many actual experiences in the Swedish society. There is still an extensive field left to explore and many diversified experiences to be discovered.

Bidragande faktorer till psykisk ohälsa hos ensamkommande barn : En litteraturstudie

Omar, Najah, Abdirahman, Ruweyda January 2022 (has links)
Background: Refugees have existed throughout human history, but in recent times it has become morecommon for children without adult company to arrive at Europe's borders. Most children who have arrived in Sweden in recent years have a background in Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea. In 2015 a record number came to Sweden when 35,369 unaccompanied children arrived. During the influx of refugees between 2015 and 2016, an estimated 170,000 children and young people came to Europe's borders and applied for asylum. Aim: Describe contributing factors to mental health problems among unaccompanied refugee children. Method: The purpose of the study is answered with a literature review with a qualitative approach based on 11 scientific articles taken from PubMed and CINAHL. Results: Four themes were identified: Traumatic experiences, Migration process, Agedetermination and Gender. The predominant factors that contributed to mental health problems among the children turned out to be traumatic experiences before and during the migration as well as the protracted migration process. Conclusion: The results of this literature study showed that unaccompanied refugee children have experienced various traumatic events before and during the migration process and face adversity and difficulties in the new country.
