Interview mit Peter Matzke

Efter Shirley Jacksons död år 1965 verkade allmänhetens uppmärksamhet gentemot hennes litterära produktion avta. Idag kan vi däremot observera ett kraftigt ökat intresse för hennes författarskap och de tematiker som behandlas, det vill säga kvinnans isolering, de sociala normernas inflytande på den mänskliga erfarenheten och ödets obarmhärtighet. Denna uppsats fokuserar på den postumt utgivna novellen med titeln ”The Honeymoon of Mrs Smith (Version II): The Mystery of the Murdered Bride”. Syftet med denna uppsats är att belysa hur narratologiska strukturer återspeglar mönster och regelbundenheter som kan tolkas utifrån ett genusperspektiv. Här finns först ett intresse för att analysera den valda novellen utifrån Monika Fluderniks (1996, 2009) definition av berättelse och hennes teori om experientiality, vilket resulterar i en analys av novellens narratologiska struktur. Uppsatsens andra mål är att åskådliggöra hur berättelsens narratologiska struktur påvisar tecken av interna, fiktiva samhällsstrukturer som kan analyseras utifrån Yvonne Hirdmans (1988, 2001) genusteori. Denna kombinerade analys har slutligen som mål att belysa hur den mänskliga erfarenheten och dess agerande inom berättelsen påverkas av mönstereffekter och regelbundenheter som styr relationen mellan könen. Slutsatsen som dras här är att Fluderniks (1996, 2009) teori agerat som effektiv ingång till hur de olika elementen som formar den analyserade berättelsen samverkar för att ge upphov till de samhälleliga mönster och regelbundenheter som Hirdman (1988, 2001) beskriver och kritiserar. Kombinationen av narratologisk analys och genusteoretisk analys visade sig i slutändan vara effektiv för att belysa hur de samhälleliga dynamiker som styr relationen mellan könen inom berättelsen påverkar hur människorna inom den agerar.

This essay examines the paranormal in Stephen King’s novel The Shining to investigate if there is a parapsychological motif and how that affects the narrative. This is achieved by analysing the abilities that the Torrance family, Dick Hallorann, and the Overlook exhibit and how these abilities are linked to established terminology within the parapsychological research area. The main focus will be on correlations between The Shining and research that has been carried out within anomalistic psychology and parapsychology. Structuralist literary theory is used to investigate all parts of the narrative. Both a mimetic and a semiotic reading are applied. This is done first by performing a comparative analysis from a Gothic structural perspective. Furthermore, an analysis of the paranormal abilities the characters exhibit and likewise the paranormal phenomena in the narrative is done. Finally, the abilities and phenomena are linked to the terminology used within the paranormal research field. The conclusion is that there is a correlation between the scientific paranormal terminology and Kings description of the characters' abilities, as well as the phenomena in the narrative. / Uppsatsen undersöker det paranormala i Stephen Kings roman Varsel för att utreda om det finns ett parapsykologiskt motiv i berättelsen samt i så fall hur ett parapsykologiskt motiv påverkar berättelsen. Studien analyserar därför förmågorna som familjen Torrance, Dick Hallorann och Overlook uppvisar och hur dessa förmågor kan länkas med den kända terminologin inom det parapsykologiska forskningsområdet. Huvudfokus ligger på att studera korrelationer mellan Varsel och forskningen som utförts inom den anomalistiska psykologin och parapsykologin. Strukturalistisk litteraturteori kommer att användas för att undersöka alla delar av berättelsen genom tillämpning av både mimetisk och semiotisk läsning. Detta genom att först utföra en komparativ analys från ett gotiskt strukturellt perspektiv för att sedan undersöka vilka paranormala förmågor persongalleriet uppvisar och slutligen länka dessa till den terminologi som används inom det paranormala forskningsområdet. Slutsatsen blev att studien fann ett samband mellan den vetenskapliga paranormala begreppsbilden och Kings beskrivning av karaktärernas förmågor samt intrigens fenomen i Varsel.

Gothic literature has a tradition of dealing with dark subjects, themes and motifs, as well as depicting fear in different shapes and forms. Dani Cavallaro describes dark fiction in terms of the "aesthetic of the unwelcome". The philosopher Edmund Burke separates the beautiful from the sublime and writes that everything that is capable of producing a terror of pain and death is a source of the sublime. In her essay "On the Supernatural in Poetry", Ann Radcliffe draws a clear line between the concepts of terror and horror and distinguished them as fundamentally different. In this essay, I define the terms horror and terror by following up the research surrounding Radcliffes statement. I begin with the concept of terror that Burke and other writers define as an elevated and positive feeling, then move on to account for the discussion surrounding Matthew Lewis' novel The Monk. It was considered pornographic, lewd and outright dangerous in its obscenity with blatant depictions of violence, gore and sex. Since Radcliffe and Lewis were contemporary I reckon that it is profitable to explore this tension further in my essay. From Radcliffe and Lewis I find out how the concepts of terror and horror have developed with time and how modern theorists conceive this distinction.

In this essay, I make a queer feminist analysis of four novels written by the Swedish author Sigge Stark. The novels are: Uggleboet, Manhatareklubben, Cirkus Demonio och Baskerflickan. Using Judith Butler's theories I examine the relations between sex/gender and sexuality in the four books and show how the construction of gender is performed and the heterosexual normativity is jeopardized. I also examine whether, and if so how, Sigge Stark uses the romantic and the gothic genres to include transcending gender identities and sexualities in her work. The essay also includes a contextualisation of her prerequisities as an author and the necessity in performing a critical analysis of mass produced romantic literature.

In this essay, the works Interview with the Vampire (1976) by Anne Rice and Carmilla (1872) by Sheridan Le Fanu will be placed together and compared via close reading, and discussed alongside queer theory. The focus is to find similarities and contrast between these two vampiric tales as well as discuss how the queer element is shown. The main questions with this text will be; How is the queerness portrayed in the texts and what is the difference between them? There will also be a discussion about male versus female homosexuality and how this is portrayed in the texts. The point of this study is to show how similar grounds can culminate into different outcomes with the vampiric origin accounted for. The result showed a clear difference between the two texts, but also some similarities. The vampire stays queer in both.
