Maintaining Hózhó: Perceptions of Physical Activity, Physical Education and Healthy Living Among Navajo High School StudentsJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT
Native American populations have higher obesity and diabetes rates overall in the U.S. Percentages of obesity among Native American children were 11-25% higher than the national average. Among Navajo, cultural lifestyles changes have led to less physical activity and obesity problems with youth more disassociated from traditional Navajo living, culture, beliefs, language and religion. They were at highest risk for Type II diabetes among ethnic groups due to less physically activity, increased weight gain and obesity.
This study had dual purposes: Part one of this study was to examined the perceptions of physical activity, physical education and living healthy lifestyles of Navajo adolescents, physical educators, a Navajo culture teacher, a Diné studies teacher and a community member. Part two of this study examined the physical activity patterns of Navajo adolescent students. To gain their perspectives, eight Navajo students (9-12 grades), two physical educators, two classroom teachers and one community member were recruited and interviewed individually for 60-minutes. Secondly, pedometers were used to assess the students’ physical activity levels during the school day and 24-hour increments.
Results of the part one study indicated important aspects of physical activity by Navajo adolescents, physical education teachers, classroom teachers and a community member were cultural identity, family involvement, and structure of family/extended family. Navajo respondents participated in traditional form of running in the morning, a practice performed by parents and/or extended family. Physical activity was described as active involvement of the body, movement, physical fitness, and sport related interests. Stakeholders described physical activity and healthy living as culturally driven beliefs and learning based on Navajo way of life.
Findings of part two study indicated that boys were significantly more physically active on weekday than girls t(32)=2.04, p=<.05. Weekday step counts for boys indicated (M=11,078, SD= 4,399) and for girls (M=7,567, SD=5,613). Girls were significantly more active on weekend t(27)=2.30,p=.03. Weekend step counts indicated boys and girls accumulated (M=6493, SD=5650) and (M=7589, SD=5614) steps. Physical education step counts showed minimal differences between boys (M=2203, SD=918) and girls (M=1939, SD=889) step counts. Overall results indicate that Navajo adolescents did not meet daily physical activity recommendations. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Physical Education 2015

Stimulating vitality : facilities for the promotion of healthy living in OlievenhoutboschOmar, Muhammed Saadig 07 December 2012 (has links)
This dissertation aims to promote healthy living for people residing in a disadvantaged area. Physical activity, social interaction a connection with nature are key aspects in this project. The proposed facility would thus include amenities for recreation and health services to assist in achieving this goal. The architecture will be used to stimulate the senses and thus bring into consciousness the presence of the human body in its interaction with the surroundings. The motivation for the project is the fact that many of the health problems experienced by the population of the country are caused by obesity. A lack of physical activity and poor eating habits has resulted in obesity and its associated illnesses being quite common in all communities around the world. Another reason for the project is the accelerated damages that are occurring to the natural environment. People have become unaware of the importance of natural environment and this ignorance has lead to polluting and general mistreatment becoming common place. The proposed site is in the township of Olievenhoutbosch, south of Tshwane. The township lacks many public facilities so the proposed design should also consider the intervention being more than just a health and recreation centre, but one that serves as a hub for the people of the community. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / Unrestricted

Canada's Experiment with Children's Fitness and Activity Tax Credits2014 August 1900 (has links)
This thesis evaluates the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit and similar credits to determine whether they are suitable to increase physical activity levels in Canada. It begins by reviewing the literature on physical activity to establish that increasing physical activity is a worthy public policy goal. It then reviews the literature on tax expenditures and health behaviour interventions to provide information in order to evaluate the credits. The credits are then described and their stated purpose is discussed. This description establishes how quickly the credits expanded from one small credit to many. One of the credits, the Active Families Benefit, requires a new concept to evaluate it as it is not simply a tax measure or a spending measure. The term hybrid tax measure is introduced to explore this credit. An evaluation of the credits considering their effectiveness, efficiency and equity in determining their suitability to increase physical activity is performed and the conclusion is made that they are unlikely to be effective and that the inequity of the credits is problematic, particularly in light of this ineffectiveness finding. It is recommended that the credits be repealed and no new credits be created, but as repeal is unlikely, alternative recommendations are also provided.
