Étude descriptive du paratexte des traductions en espagnol et en anglais de la «Relation historique» (1814) d’Alexandre von Humboldt

Alexandre von Humboldt (1769-1859), dernier savant universel, membre de l’Académie des sciences française et président de la Société de géographie de Paris, est reconnu dans le monde scientifique pour son exploration du continent américain qu’il a amplement décrit dans ses écrits en français et en allemand. Dans ce travail, nous étudions les traductions en espagnol et en anglais de l’ouvrage le plus notoire d’Alexandre von Humboldt, Relation historique du Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent, (1799-1804). Dans une optique descriptive (Toury, 1995), nous menons une étude socio-culturelle (Lépinette, 1997) des traductions en espagnol et en anglais de la Relation historique. La méthodologie employée est celle développée par D’hulst (2001 et 2014). Dans cette méthode, il propose de répondre, entre autres, aux questions pourquoi, quand, qui, où, quoi traduit-on. Pour ce faire, nous nous penchons sur les paratextes (Genette, 1987) qui accompagnent tant l’original que les traductions. Notre étude a révélé qu’aucune des traductions en espagnol intègrent complètement le contenu de l’original et que les parties sélectionnées l’ont été pour des questions identitaires. / Alexandre von Humboldt (1769-1859), last universal scientist, member of the Académie des sciences française and president of the Société de géographie de Paris, was a scientist recognized worldwide for the exploration of the American continent and for the written records he produced, in French and German, about his journey. The corpus we used for this study was the abundant existing peritext and epitext (Genette, 1987) of Humboldt’s travel writings. We analyzed the Spanish and English translations of von Humboldt’s most famous book, Relation historique du Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent (1799-1804). Working within a descriptive framework (Toury, 1995), we conducted a sociocultural study (Lépinette, 1997) of the Spanish and English translations of the Relation historique. Lieven D’hulst’s (2001 and 2014) methodology aims at answering the questions what, when, where, who or why do we translate. We concentrated mainly on the analysis of the paratext (Genette, 1987) that comes with the original and the translations to answer the questions proposed by D’hulst. Our study revealed that there is no complete translation of the text in Spanish and that the selection of the sections that appear in translations are motivated by identity questions.

“It was the doing of the ‘6-Sky’ lord” : an investigation of the origins and meaning of the three stones of creation in ancient Mesoamerica

The following work presents a hypothesis which identifies the origins and meaning of an ancient Mesoamerican concept known as the three stones of creation. Previous interpretations have tended to apply astronomical, spatial, or geographical models, while many conclusions have been made on the basis of one Classic Maya monument, Stela C of Quirigua. This thesis builds an argument for the temporal nature of these “stones,” used to metaphorically represent a sequence of separate units of time, referred to as eras, ages, or creations. A primary goal is to demonstrate that Quirigua Stela C provides in brief, summary form a chronology which is better defined through inscriptions in the Cross Group at Palenque, and in a sequence of panels at Yaxchilan containing beliefs about the origins of the ballgame. In constructing an argument for the temporal nature of the three stones of creation, every available context from a set of hieroglyphs mentioned in the Quirigua Stela C “creation” text—including Na Ho Chan (“First 5-Sky”) and “6-Sky”—is discussed in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, these glyphs are shown to aid in the organization of the deeper past within the Palenque and Yaxchilan mythologies. When compared chronologically and thematically, these sites seem to point to the 24th century B.C.E. as the important termination of a time period (i.e., the planting of a creation stone) related to a mythic complex involving the death and underworld journey of the Maize Lord, followed by his resurrection, emergence, and/or accession to power. Key questions addressed include the antiquity of these beliefs and where the metaphors used to arrange time observed among the Classic Maya originate. In Chapter 4, earlier expressions of this time ideology are interpreted through iconographic conventions, ritual deposits, and monumental architecture at the Olmec site of La Venta. Similarly, Chapter 5 proposes that the Humboldt Celt, the earliest known example of the three stones of creation, arranges units of time into a sequence. These and other interpretations suggest the existence of an ancestral, Mesoamerican era-based time model to which later Postclassic, colonial, and contemporary beliefs, such as those expressed in the K’iche’-Mayan Popol Vuh, are fundamentally related. / text

Hayek’s Political Philosophy and Its Philosophical Sources

This thesis aims to broaden the discussion about the origins of some of the fundamental theoretical sources for Hayek’s ideas regarding freedom and the state. It focuses on the debates between the Austrian School of Economics and the German Historical School of Economics, as well as the works of Popper, Mill, Humboldt and Hegel in order to identify their positive and negative influences on Hayek’s views of freedom and the state. The originality of the thesis relates to the examination of Humboldt’s political philosophy in terms of its influence over the formation of the components of Hayek’s account of freedom, such as spontaneous order, the rule of law, the role of the state, and the nature of human knowledge. These components have assisted in Hayek’s efforts to prove the superiority of open societies over totalitarian regimes. The thesis explains that Hayek’s intellectual collaboration with Popper played a significant role in identifying many enemies of open societies. Both theorists agreed that historicism was a method commonly used and promoted by the enemies of open society; specifically, they accused Hegel of promoting historicism and, as a result, of being an enemy of open societies. However, this thesis disputes these accusations and argues that Popper and Hayek did not possess adequate knowledge of Hegel’s theoretical work to make such claims. In actuality, Hegel was not an enemy of open societies, he recognized the potential devastating outcomes associated with them and sought solutions. The thesis also explores the idea that Mill was also worried about the detrimental features of industrial capitalism and, as a result, attributed a prominent role to “state activity” in securing the conditions of positive freedom. Hayek, meanwhile, viewed such forms of state interference as obstacles to attaining freedom. This thesis examines the topic whether or not Hayek actually sought to formulate a genuine form of freedom or if he merely valued freedom as a tool for the promotion of open societies over centrally planned economies.

Longitudinal adaptation of vastus lateralis muscle in response to eccentric exercise

In der vorliegenden Studie wurde daher den Einfluss exzentrischen Trainings, mit unterschiedlicher Reizmagnitude, Bewegungsgeschwindigkeit und Muskellänge bei Reizapplikation, auf die Adaptation des M. vastus lateralis (VL) untersucht. Die 31 Studienteilnehmer wurden randomisiert in zwei Trainings- und eine Kontrollgruppe aufgeteilt. Die Trainingsgruppen führten 30 Trainingseinheiten mit exzentrischem Training der Knieextensoren an einem Isokineten durch. Gruppe 1 (n=10) trainierte ein Bein mit 65% der maximalen willkürlichen isometrischen Kontraktion (MVC) und das andere Bein mit 100% MVC, bei einer Winkelgeschwindigkeit von 90°/s und einem Kniewinkel von 25°-100°. Gruppe 2 (n=10) trainierte beide Beine mit 100% MVC, ein Bein aber mit einer Winkelgeschwindigkeit von 90°/s in einem Kniewinkel von 25°-65° und das andere Bein mit 240°/s und 25°-100°. In der Pre- und Postmessung wurde die VL Muskelfaserlänge mittels Ultraschall bestimmt und die Moment-Winkel- und Leistungs-Winkelgeschwindigkeitsrelation mit einem Dynamometer erfasst. Die Ergebnisse zeigen nur für Bein mit 240°/s eine signifikante (p / The present study investigated the effects of magnitude, velocity and muscle length at which the eccentric stimulus is applied on the longitudinal adaptation of the vastus lateralis muscle (VL). Spectrum and quantum symmetries of the AdS5 × S5 superstring

Die AdS/CFT-Dualität zwischen N=4 SYM und dem AdS_5 × S^5 Superstring zeigt Quanten-Integrabilität im planaren Limes und erlaubte die Konstruktion mächtiger Methoden, welche das Spektrale Problem zu lösen scheinen. Unser Verständnis der direkten Quantisierung des AdS_5 × S^5 Superstrings ist jedoch weiterhin unbefriedigend und besonders das Spektrum kurzer Stringzustände war bisher nur in führender Ordnung in starker ''t Hooft-Kopplung bekannt. In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir verschiedene Methoden der perturbativen Quantisierung kurzer Strings über die führende Ordnung hinaus, wodurch wir uns auch einen besseres Verständnis der vorhandenen Quanten-Symmetrien erhoffen. Wir fokusieren auf die niedrigst angeregten Stringzustände, dual zum Konishi-Supermultiplet, und begutachten kritisch eine angeblichen Berechnung der Konishi anomalen Skalendimension im Pure-Spinor-Superstring-Formalismus. Als nächstes betrachten wir den bosonischen AdS_5 × S^5 String in statischer Eichung und konstruieren eine sog. Einzelmoden-Stringlösung, eine Veralgemeinerung des pulsierenden Strings durch unbeschränkte Nullmoden. Diese ist klassisch integrabel und quanteninvariant unter den Isometrien SO(2,4) × SO(6). Mögliche Korrekturen der vernachlässigten Supersymmetrie werden heuristisch berücksichtigt, wodurch die ersten Quantenkorrekturen der Konishi anomale Skalendimension reproduzieren werden. Wir implementieren statische Eichung für den AdS_5 × S^5 Superstring und finden elegante Ausdrücke für die Lagrangedichte und Superladungen. Unter Beschränkung auf das Superteilchen finden wir auf zwei unterschiedliche Arten kanonische Koordinaten in quadratischer Ordnung in Fermionen. Schließlich betrachten wir eine weitere Quantisierungsmethode: Da der Einzelmoden-String die SO(2,4) × SO(6)-Bahn des pulsierenden Strings ist, wenden wir Bahn-Methoden-Quantisierung auf das Teilchen und Spinning Strings in bosonischem AdS_3 × S^3 an und erhalten konsistente Ergebnisse für die Spektra. / The initial AdS/CFT duality pair, the duality between N=4 SYM and the AdS_5 × S^5 superstring, appears to enjoy quantum integrability in the planar limit, which allowed to devise powerful methods ostensibly solving the spectral problem. However, quantization of the AdS_5 × S^5 superstring from first principles is still an open question and especially the spectrum of short string states has previously been derived only at leading order in large ''t Hooft coupling. In this thesis we investigate possible routes to quantize short string states perturbatively beyond the leading order, where equally our aim is to gain better appreciation of the quantum symmetries at play. A prominent role is played by the lowest excited string states, dual to the Konishi supermultiplet, and we start by reviewing critically an asserted derivation of the Konishi anomalous dimension in the setup of pure spinor string theory. Next, we constrain ourselves to bosonic AdS_5 × S^5 String in static gauge, where we construct a so-called single-mode string solution, a generalization of the pulsating string allowing for unconstrained zero-modes. This solution shows classical integrability and invariance under the isometries SO(2,4) × SO(6) at the quantum level. Arguing heuristically about the effects of supersymmetry, we indeed recover the first non-trivial quantum correction to the Konishi anomalous dimension. We continue by implementing static gauge for the full AdS_5 × S^5 superstring and find elegant expressions for the Lagrangian density and the supercharges. We then constrain our interest to the superparticle and, using two different methods, find canonical coordinates at quadratic order in fermions. We conclude by exploring another quantization scheme: As the single-mode string is nothing but the SO(2,4) × SO(6) orbit of the pulsating string, we apply orbit method quantization to the particle and spinning string solutions in bosonic AdS_3 × S^3 yielding consistent results for the spectra.

Assessing the impact of new Individual Vessel Quota legislation on the sustainability of the Peruvian anchoveta fishery / Evaluación del impacto de una nueva legislación basada en Límites Máximos de Captura por Embarcación sobre la sostenibilidad de la pesquería peruana de anchoveta

The Peruvian anchoveta fishery was for nearly 60 years characterized by the unsustainable dynamics of open access resource pools. This thesis investigates whether the 2009 Peruvian Legislative Decree 1084 on Individual Vessel Quotas (IVQ's) is an effective response to the industrial overcapacity and race-to-fish problems that threatened the environment before its implementation. It employs Common-Pool Resource theory to assess the impact of the new IVQ scheme on collective dynamics, and Ribot and Peluso's access theory (2009) to elucidate evolving power relations in the fishery. In this framework, DL1084 is evaluated as a regulatory instrument, as a lens on fisheries governance in Peru, and as a source of insight into how environmental impact serves in developing regulations of natural resource exploitation. A triangulated mixed-method design is employed: (1) a two-stream literature review of fisheries management and of the fishery's political ecology; (2) a quantitative analysis of daily state-published landings reports; and (3) seven in-depth intensive interviews with key actors in the fishery, conducted in Peru over two field-trips of approximately 2 months in total. Results indicate that although IVQ's supported existing trends towards large-scale economic efficiency and altered extreme competitive strategies previously associated with open access, fishing companies have built larger ships, favour bigger catches and still concentrate fishing effort around a given annual peak. Meanwhile, capacity has again increased in the unregulated artisanal fishery sector. DL1084 appears to reflect a broader process of growing private sector involvement in managing the fishery, made official by its institutionalization of market self-regulation. Ultimately, it evidences deep structure and capacity limitations in the state's ability to govern marine resources. The law was nevertheless seen as a landmark for the environmental legal process in Peru and an opportunity for reform. This thesis suggests that studying such legislations can provide insight into state identity and the evolving relationship between a nation and its geography. / Durante casi 60 años, la pesquería peruana de anchoveta estaba caracterizada por las dinámicas insostenibles de la explotación de recursos de propiedad común en situación de acceso abierto. Esta tesis investiga si el Decreto Legislativo Peruano 1084 (DL1084) sobre Límites Máximos de Captura por Embarcación (LMCE) es una respuesta efectiva a los problemas de sobrecapacidad industrial y de carrera por el recurso que amenazaban el ambiente antes de su aplicación en 2009. Se basa en la teoría de los Recursos de Propiedad Común (Common-Pool Resource theory) para evaluar el impacto del nuevo modelo de gestión por LMCE sobre las dinámicas colectivas, y en la teoría del Acceso de Ribot y Peluso (2009) para trazar la evolución de las relaciones de poder en la pesquería. En este marco, el DL1084 es evaluado como herramienta regulatoria, como lente sobre la gobernanza pesquera en el Perú y como reflejo del proceso por el cual el impacto ambiental sirve como base para el desarrollo de regulaciones sobre el acceso a recursos naturales. Sigue un diseño triangulado de métodos combinados: (1) una revisión de literatura en dos ramas de la gestión de pesquería como campo general y de la ecología política de la pesquería de anchoveta; (2) un análisis cuantitativo de los informes diarios de desembarques publicados por el estado (IMARPE); y (3) siete entrevistas intensivas de fondo con actores claves en la pesquería, realizadas en Perú durante dos visitas de aproximadamente dos meses en total. Los resultados indican que a pesar de que los LMCE soportaron una tendencia existente hacia una eficiencia económica de mayor escala y alteraron las estrategias competitivas extremas asociadas con el acceso abierto, las empresas pesqueras han construido embarcaciones más grandes, favorecen capturas de mayor tamaño y todavía concentran su esfuerzo pesquero alrededor de un pico anual de abundancia. En paralelo, ha aumentado la capacidad de captura en el sector artesanal, el cual no cuenta con límites de captura. El DL1084 aparece como parte de un proceso más general de creciente involucramiento del sector privado en el manejo de la pesquería, haciéndolo oficial por su misma institucionalización de la autorregulación del mercado. Por último, pone en evidencia profundas limitaciones de estructura y de capacidad en el estado en cuanto a cómo gobierna los recursos marinos. La ley ha sin embargo sido vista como un precedente importante para el proceso legislativo ambiental en el Perú así como una oportunidad para impulsar otras reformas. Esta tesis sugiere que el estudio de tales legislaciones puede ofrecer una mirada sobre los procesos de formación de la identidad de un estado y sobre la evolución de la relación entre una nación y su geografía.

Trophic dynamics in the northern Humboldt Current system : insights from stable isotopes and stomach content analyses / Dynamique trophique du système du Courant de Humboldt : apports des isotopes stables et des analyses de contenus stomacaux

Le nord du système du Courant de Humboldt (NHCS), le long des côtes péruviennes, est l'une des régions océanique les plus productives au monde. Il représente moins de 0.1% de la surface des océans mondiaux mais contribue actuellement à plus de 10% des captures mondiales en poissons, avec l’anchois Engraulis ringens comme espèce emblématique. Comparé aux autres systèmes d’upwelling de bord Est, la forte productivité en poissons ne peut être expliquée par une productivité primaire plus élevée. Par contre, le NCHS est la région où El Niño, et la variabilité climatique en général est la plus notable. D’autre part, les eaux de surface oxygénées recouvrent une zone de minimum d’oxygène extrêmement intense et superficielle. L’objectif principal de ce travail est de mieux comprendre les relations trophiques au sein du NHCS en combinant l'analyse de contenus stomacaux et d'isotopes stables. Cette étude se focalise sur une variété d’organismes allant des bas niveaux trophiques comme le zooplancton aux prédateurs supérieurs (oiseaux et les otaries à fourrure). Elle combine des études de contenus stomacaux ponctuelles et sur le long terme d’espèces clés telles que l’anchois et la sardine Sardinops sagax et une analyse plus globale, basée sur l'utilisation d'isotopes stables et considérant l’ensemble du réseau trophique dans les années récentes (2008 – 2012). Les analyses des contenus stomacaux d'anchois et de sardine ont permis de revisiter l'écologie de ces espèces. En effet, bien que le phytoplancton domine largement les contenus stomacaux en termes d’abondance numérique, le zooplancton est de loin la composante alimentaire la plus importante pour ces deux espèces en termes de carbone. Dans le cas de l’anchois, les euphausiacés contribuent à plus de 67.5% du carbone ingéré, suivis par les copépodes (26.3%). Sélectionner les proies les plus grandes telles que les euphausiacés procure un avantage énergétique pour l’anchois dans cet écosystème où les carences en oxygène imposent de fortes contraintes métaboliques aux poissons pélagiques. La sardine se nourrit de zooplancton plus petit que l’anchois (copépodes plus petits et moins d’euphausiacés). Ainsi, la compétition trophique entre les sardines et les anchois est minimisée dans le NSCH par le partage de la ressource zooplancton selon sa taille, comme cela a déjà été montré dans d’autres écosystèmes. Ces résultats remettent en question la compréhension première de la position des petits poissons pélagiques (zooplanctonophage et non phytoplanctonophage) dans la chaine trophique ce qui implique de reconsidérer le fonctionnement et les modèles trophiques du NCHS. Afin d’obtenir une compréhension plus globale de la position trophique relative des principaux composants du NHCS une approche basée sur des analyses d’isotopes stables (δ13C et δ15N) a été utilisée. Pour ce faire, la signature isotopique d'échantillons de 13 groupes taxonomiques (zooplancton, poissons, calmars et prédateurs supérieurs) prélevés entre 2008 et 2011 a été déterminée. Les valeurs de δ15N obtenues sont fortement impactées par l’espèce, la taille et la latitude. Le long de la cote péruvienne, la zone de minimum d’oxygène devient en effet plus intense et plus superficielle au sud de ~7.5ºS impactant fortement la valeur de δ15N de la ligne de base. Nous avons donc utilisé un modèle linéaire à effet mixte prenant en compte les effets latitude et taille afin de prédire la position trophique relative des composants clés de l’écosystème. Ces analyses isotopiques confirment les résultats issus des contenus stomacaux sur le régime alimentaire de l’anchois et mettent en évidence l’importance potentielle d’une composante souvent négligée de l’écosystème, la galathée pélagique Pleuroncodes monodon. En effet, nos résultats supportent l’hypothèse selon laquelle cette espèce s’alimenterait en partie sur les oeufs et larves d’anchois, menaçant ainsi les premiers stades de vie des espèces exploitées. [...] / The northern Humboldt Current system (NHCS) off Peru is one of the most productive world marine regions. It represents less than 0.1% of the world ocean surface but presently sustains about 10% of the world fish catch, with the Peruvian anchovy or anchoveta Engraulis ringens as emblematic fish resource. Compared with other eastern boundary upwelling systems, the higher fish productivity of the NHCS cannot be explained by a corresponding higher primary productivity. On another hand, the NHCS is the region where El Niño, and climate variability in general, is most notable. Also, surface oxygenated waters overlie an intense and extremely shallow Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). In this context, the main objective of this study is to better understand the trophic flows in the NHCS using both stomach content and stable isotope analyses. The study focuses on a variety of organisms from low trophic levels such as zooplankton to top predators (seabirds and fur seals). The approach combines both long-term and specific studies on emblematic species such as anchoveta, and sardine Sardinops sagax and a more inclusive analysis considering the 'global' food web in the recent years (2008 –2012) using stable isotope analysis.Revisiting anchovy and sardine we show that whereas phytoplankton largely dominated anchoveta and sardine diets in terms of numerical abundance, the carbon content of prey items indicated that zooplankton was by far the most important dietary component. Indeed for anchovy euphausiids contributed 67.5% of dietary carbon, followed by copepods (26.3%).Selecting the largest prey, the euphausiids, provide an energetic advantage for anchoveta in its ecosystem where oxygen depletion imposes strong metabolic constrain to pelagic fish. Sardine feed on smaller zooplankton than do anchoveta, with sardine diet consisting of smaller copepods and fewer euphausiids than anchoveta diet. Hence, trophic competition between sardine and anchovy in the northern Humboldt Current system is minimized by their partitioning of the zooplankton food resource based on prey size, as has been reported in other systems.These results suggest an ecological role for pelagic fish that challenges previous understanding of their position in the foodweb (zooplanktophagous instead of phytophagous), the functioning and the trophic models of the NHCS.Finally to obtain a more comprehensive vision of the relative trophic position of NHCS main components we used stable isotope analyses. For that purpose we analyzed the δ13C and δ15N stable isotope values of thirteen taxonomic categories collected off Peru from 2008 - 2011, i.e., zooplankton, fish, squids and air-breathing top predators. The δ15N isotope signature was strongly impacted by the species, the body length and the latitude. Along the Peruvian coast, the OMZ get more intense and shallow south of ~7.5ºS impacting the baseline nitrogen stable isotopes. Employing a linear mixed-effects modelling approach taking into account the latitudinal and body length effects, we provide a new vision of the relative trophic position of key ecosystem components. Also we confirm stomach content-based results on anchoveta Engraulis ringens and highlight the potential remarkable importance of an often neglected ecosystem component, the squat lobster Pleuroncodes monodon. Indeed, our results support the hypothesis according to which this species forage to some extent on fish eggs and larvae and can thus predate on the first life stages of exploited species. However, the δ13C values of these two species suggest that anchoveta and squat lobster do not exactly share the same habitat. This would potentially reduce some direct competition and/or predation.

Diese Dissertationsschrift ist angesiedelt im Bereich Digitaler Edition archivalischer Quellen, deren Erschließung und (computergestützter) Analyse. Im Zentrum stehen die sog. Kosmos-Vorträge, die Alexander von Humboldts 1827/28 in zwei Vortragszyklen in Berlin gehalten hat. Diese werden als gleichwertige, zweifache Publikationen in Humboldts Werkbiographie eingeordnet. In einem zentralen Kapitel (Kap. 7) geht es mir um eine editionstheoretische Fundierung der Edition von Vorlesungsnachschriften, zunächst allgemein und dann bezogen auf die Nachschriften der Kosmos-Vorträge. Zuvor wird das Forschungsfeld beleuchtet, da über die Rahmenbedingungen und Inhalte der beiden Vortragsreihen bislang nur wenig bekannt war. Humboldts Motivation zu diesen Vorträgen, deren Zusammenhang mit dem Kosmos (1845–62) und weiteren seiner Publikationen, sowie die jeweiligen organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen werden untersucht. Inhaltlich sind die Kosmos-Vorträge bislang wenig erforscht worden, unter anderem weil die wichtigsten Quellen nicht rezipiert wurden. Dank der Digitalisierung des Humboldt-Nachlasses und vor allem durch die Digitale Edition der Nachschriften aus dem Hörerkreis sind die Voraussetzungen dafür mittlerweile sehr viel besser. Um die künftige Arbeit mit diesen Dokumenten zu unterstützen, dokumentiere und reflektiere ich in Kapitel 8 die praktische Umsetzung des Editionsmodells gemäß den Richtlinien der Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Anschließend stelle ich die edierten Nachschriften aus beiden Vortragszyklen vor und zeige, wie sich mit den digitalen Volltexten arbeiten lässt. Dabei kommen quantitative Untersuchungen und Verfahren wie automatische Kollation bzw. Plagiatssuche, aber auch ‚traditionell hermeneutische‘ Methoden zum Einsatz. Schließlich geht es mir in meiner Arbeit darum, die Grundlage für die weitere Erforschung der beiden Vortragsreihen wesentlich zu verbessern und anhand einiger exemplarischer Analysen erste Schritte in diese Richtung zu unternehmen. / This dissertation is located in the field of digital editions of archival sources, their exploration and (computer-assisted) analysis. In terms of content, it deals with the so-called Kosmos-Lectures, which Alexander von Humboldt held in two distinct courses in Berlin in the winter of 1827/28. The two series are recognised as two distinct publications of equal value in Humboldt’s oeuvre. In a central chapter (chapter 7), I am concerned with an edition-theoretical foundation for the edition of attendee’s notebooks, first in general and then in relation to the transcripts of the Kosmos-Lectures. Before this, the research field of the long-neglected Kosmos-Lectures is illuminated, as little has been known about the framework conditions of the lecture series. Humboldt’s motivation for these lectures, their connection with the Kosmos (1845–62) and other of his publications, and the respective organisational framework of the courses are being examined. In terms of content, the Kosmos-Lectures have so far been little researched, partly because the most important sources have not been taken into consideration. The conditions for this are now much better thanks to the digitisation of the Humboldt legacy collection and, above all, the digital edition of the transcripts from the audience. To facilitate future work with these documents, I document and reflect the practical implementation of the edition model according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) in chapter 8. In the following two chapters, I present the attendee’s notebooks from both courses, and show how to work with these digital full texts. Quantitative investigations and methods such as automatic collation or text re-use detection, but also ‘traditional hermeneutic’ approaches are used. Ultimately, my work aims to significantly improve the basis for research into the two lecture series, which has so far been lacking, and to take the first steps in this direction by means of some exemplary analyses.

A cooperative effort to track Humboldt squid invasions in Oregon

Interannual variability of Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) occurrence in the northern California Current System is largely unknown. In Oregon, the distribution of this versatile predator and what is influencing their range expansion from Mexico is poorly understood due to the recent nature of their "invasion" and a lack of monitoring. Humboldt squid are large predators that have the potential to affect ecosystem structure and fisheries because of their high-energy demands and ability to exploit a variety of oceanographic conditions and prey sources. Developing baseline distribution information is a critical first step to assess their potential ecological, social, and economic impacts, and to develop models to predict future range expansion. This study has two main objectives: (1) to document where and when Humboldt squid have been present in Oregon through cooperative fisheries research, and (2) to correlate the sightings with oceanographic conditions using a geographic information system (GIS) and species distribution modeling (SDM). I conducted 54 interviews with local fishermen and aggregated their squid sightings with available fishery-independent survey and fishery-dependent observer data from the National Marine Fisheries Service. I compiled a total of 339 Humboldt squid sightings, reported for the years 2002-2011 from the Oregon coast to 131�� west longitude. Correlation analyses were performed for Humboldt squid sightings and sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll a content (chla), sea surface height anomalies (SSH), dissolved oxygen at 30 m depth (30 m DO), and sea surface salinity (SSS) using a GIS, nonparametric multiplicative regression (NPMR) habitat modeling, and maximum entropy modeling (Maxent). Results indicate that oceanographic conditions have the potential to influence Humboldt squid occurrence, and in Oregon, sightings vary temporally and spatially. Combining the sightings from fishermen and scientific surveys greatly enhanced the spatial extent of the data. Humboldt squid were most frequently observed between 124.4��W and 125��W in proximity to the shelf-break at the 200 m isobath, with peak sightings (116) recorded in 2009 and the fewest (6) reported in 2003 and 2011. The highest occurrence of Humboldt squid were observed at a SST of 10.5-13.0��C, 0.26-3.0 mg m����� chla content, -4.0-1.0 m SSH anomalies, 32.2-32.8 psu SSS, and at 3-4.5 ml L����� and 6-7 ml L����� 30 m depth DO. Maps of estimated likelihood of occurrence generated by NPMR were consistent with overlayed observations from fishermen, which were not used in the model because they were limited to presence-only information. An interdisciplinary approach that incorporates cooperative fisheries research and ecosystem-based management is necessary for monitoring Humboldt squid in Oregon. Traditional methods are insufficient because Humboldt squid are data-poor, highly migratory, and are main predators of many commercially important fisheries in Oregon. Based on my findings, sightings recorded by fishermen covered a much larger area over a longer time frame than the scientific survey and observer data, and excluding their knowledge would have led to a different interpretation of Humboldt squid distribution and environmental tolerances. Although there is uncertainty in the data from potential map bias or misidentification of smaller Humboldt squid, incorporating sightings from fishermen with traditional fisheries research increases the quantity and quality of information. Cooperative monitoring for Humboldt squid could include training in species identification and sea condition reporting in logbooks. Future "invasions" are likely, and more eyes on the water will improve our understanding of the behavior and impacts of Humboldt squid on coastal resources. / Graduation date: 2013

"Un épisodio en la vida del pintor viajero" de César Aira : le peintre voyageur dans l'Amérique latine du 19è siècle entre littérature, art et science.

Le roman de César Aira, l'un des plus grands écrivains argentins actuels, Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero (Un épisode dans la vie du peintre voyageur), publié en 2000 en Argentine et traduit en français en 2001, constitue le fil conducteur de notre recherche. Dans cette fiction inspirée d'un fait réel, Aira raconte le premier voyage en Argentine de Johann Moritz Rugendas, peintre romantique allemand de la première partie du XIXe siècle, qui sillonna l'Amérique latine durant vingt ans et rapporta de ses voyages des milliers de dessins et de peintures. Inspiré par les théories du savant Alexandre de Humboldt, et en particulier par la pensée de la " physionomie de la nature ", Rugendas fit également partie de ces artistes naturalistes dont l'art servit la science. En 1838, accompagné du peintre Robert Krause, il traversa les Andes puis la pampa argentine, mais il fut victime d'une grave chute de cheval avant d'arriver à San Luis. Durant le trajet de retour vers le Chili, il aurait approché les Indiens de la région du sud de Mendoza. C'est cet épisode de la vie de Rugendas que Aira relate, à sa façon. La première partie de cette thèse consiste en l'analyse littéraire approfondie du roman, à travers ses différentes thématiques. Parmi celles-ci, figurent l'art en voyage, les liens entre écriture et peinture, art et science, la perception de la beauté et de la laideur. Ce périple fait d'épreuves et de découvertes se révèle être finalement un véritable voyage initiatique pour l'artiste. Dans la deuxième partie, nous adoptons un point de vue historique pour confronter le roman aux faits vécus, tels qu'ils sont racontés dans les biographies de Rugendas ou dans les témoignages de ses contemporains, et réfléchissons à la dialectique entre fiction et réalité. Tout cela nous amène à réfléchir, dans une troisième partie, à l'activité de peintre voyageur. Nous retraçons l'itinéraire des deux artistes en mettant en parallèle les peintures de Rugendas et le récit de Krause, puis nous nous intéressons à chacune des caractéristiques de la pratique de l'art en voyage à travers les expériences de ces deux peintres mais aussi à travers celles d'autres artistes ayant voyagé en Amérique latine au XIXe siècle, tels Léon Pallière, Auguste Borget ou Raymond Monvoisin par exemple, et les peintres de l'école artistique humboldtienne. Cette thèse, qui allie littérature, histoire de l'art et esthétique, est à vocation pluridisciplinaire.
