It also has as a basis to analyze production articulated this same furniture and modern residential architecture in São Paulo. At that time, the company formed by architects Store Branco & Preto and the new political moment that permeated the national scene encouraged the insertion and led to the consolidation of the modern ideas in São Paulo. This production meant by the contribution of the furniture store Branco & Preto, a synonym of partnership and cooperation, to act as a mediator of the interrelationship between the mobile and residential architecture itself. The overall goal is to demonstrate and characterize the necessary relationship between modern architecture and furniture produced during the stated period, which was provided by the dissemination and assimilation in Brazil's modernist ideas and practices. The furniture designed these years came from a line produced with refinement and excess ornaments and consisted of an inseparable element of the expression of that architecture. Thus, the research assumes that the relationship between the interior spaces and architectural shell found in the furniture of the main supports of expression forefront. Moreover, it is inevitable considering the fact that the furniture expresses cultural values, aesthetic, economic and social aggregates, themes that enrich and make it complex to its specific characteristics and artistic influences, as well as production techniques. The issues raised will be evidenced by reconstituting, through drawings and models Branco & Preto Store located in Rua Vieira de Carvalho, the reconstructions of the halls of residence and the residence of Roberto Aflalo Pacaembu - designs of architects Plinio Croce and Roberto Aflalo 1955 in reconstructions of the living room of the house Maria Luisa and Oscar Americano 1952 and the first floor of the residence, 1956 Jardim America - both designs of architect Oswaldo Arthur Bratke, besides the development of drawings and models of mobile unpublished authored by members of store.

George Watson-Taylor, Esq, MP (1771-1841) : collectionneur de peintures dans l’Angleterre Regency / George Watson-Taylor, Esq, MP (1771-1841) : collector of paintings in Regency Britain

Goëssant, Elodie 08 October 2016 (has links)
Even if it isn’t well-known nowadays, the Watson-Taylor collection was indisputably one of the most important collections of the 1820s in Great Britain. It distinguished itself by the distinctive personality of its founder who assembled between 1803 and 1821 a collection as prestigious as great aristocratic ones. However, George Watson-Taylor’s wealth resting on the instable and declining West Indian sugar market, he suffered a reversal of fortune in 1832, forcing him to sell all his properties. He acquired nearly three hundred and twenty paintings including many masterpieces now exhibited in museums all over the world. Research on these collection and figure questions many aspects of the history of art and collections at this pivotal period, in particular issues like speculation, connoisseurship, art market, the role of patronage in the recognition of the British school of painting in its own country and internationally. It also treats of the historicist movement, still tinged with Romantic thought and aesthetic in that period, and of the identity issues related to the emergence of new elites. Many topics linked to a very rich context involving patriotism, debate about the abolition of slavery and political reform. It provides new information about the passage between the ways of collecting inherited from the Grand Tour, and the Victorian ones more focused on national and contemporary art. This doctoral thesis aims to analyze a celebrated then forgotten collection and to determine its place in the history of taste and collecting in Great Britain at the end of the Regency era.

Sveriges första hälsocertifierade kontor : Lärdomar från implementering av certifieringen WELL Building Standard / The first Swedish office achieving WELL certification

Pettersson, Josefine, Winninge, Melinda January 2018 (has links)
The number of certified green buildings has increased during the 21st century. Within commercial properties, such as offices, it is no longer unusual to use green building rating systems. Hence, new types of rating systems have arisen - those that promote human well-being. The WELL Building Standard is one of these new rating systems that puts the people inside the building at the centre. In 2017, the WELL Building Standard accessed the Swedish market and the first project is ready for Performance Verification in spring 2018. The project is Castellum’s Headquarter in Stockholm with property designation Klassföreståndaren 3, also known as the Flat Iron Building. The aim with this study is to contribute to a greater knowledge of how WELL Building Standard can be used in Sweden and thereby facilitate further establishment of buildings that promotes health and well-being of the building’s occupants. The objective with this study is to identify lessons learned from the certification process of the project according to WELL Building Standard - New &amp; Existing Interiors - by answering the following research questions: What is the outcome of the project in Flat Iron Building in relation to the intentions with using the rating system and the purpose of WELL Building Standard? Regarding Flat Iron Building in Stockholm, which challenges exists when combining the seven concepts of WELL Building Standard and Swedish legislation? How does project stakeholders collaborate during the implementation of WELL Building Standard in Flat Iron Building? To investigate the implementation of a wellness-oriented rating system a literature review about Swedish legislation was conducted. The review includes an overview of how WELL Building Standard compares to The Swedish Work Environment Authority’s Statute Book (AFS); National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s Building Regulations (BBR); Miljöbyggnad and LEED. Within the investigation a case study with qualitative interviews was conducted, as well as an on-site visit at the headquarter. The interviews were held with different stakeholders in the project. The study contributes to unique lessons about the intentions and outcome of the project, how features can be implemented in Sweden and how project stakeholders collaborate during implementation of a wellness-oriented rating system. According to the study WELL can be used as a tool to achieve the property owner’s objectives. Furthermore, the study demonstrates features which are challenging or uncomplicated when combined with Swedish legislation. One of the challenges described in the project is the absence of product information regarding VOC values in furniture available on the Swedish market. The study demonstrates that collaboration between stakeholders in a WELL Building Standard project is similar with a green building project. In both cases it is important with cooperation between all parties involved. Further lessons can be found in the study to facilitate establishment of WELL-projects. These lessons are related to time management, communication, knowledge and support - for instance the importance of incorporating WELL in the entire building process from planning to management. The lessons presented in this master thesis can serve those who hold a coordinating position in construction projects and is interested in implementing WELL Building Standard in Sweden. The study can also be used as a reference in further research within WELL.

TRA TERRA E CIELO. SPAZIO REALE E METAFORICO IN THE LAND’S END (1834) DI HARRIET MARTINEAU / Between Earth and Heaven: Real and Metaphorical Space in The Land’s End (1834) by Harriet Martineau

RANGHETTI, CLARA 14 February 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the meaning and the role of place in Harriet Martineau’s life and work. In the first part of the dissertation, the attachment to – or rejection of – place, i.e. home, has been acknowledged as significant in Martineau’s development of self-identity and feeling of well-being. Moreover, Martineau’s 1834 economic tale entitled The Land’s End has been chosen as the focus for the second part of the dissertation – a choice based on the possibility of showing the woman writer’s narrative strategy and use of space images in both a concrete and symbolic way.

Squeezing atoms using a confinement potential : a thesis presented in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Mathematical Physics, Massey University, Albany, New Zealand

Coxe, Julianne Neilson January 2010 (has links)
Understanding the complexities of the interior of planets and stars requires the help of analyzing the effects of high pressures on certain elements believed to be found within. The Hartree-Fock method uses the Schr¨odinger equation, Kummer’s differential equations and a confinement potential to simulate an atom being squeezed to high pressures. The Hartree-Fock method was used to calculate the total energies of atoms. After being compared to Gaussian03 and VASP, the results were deemed accurate. It was also observed that the pressure versus density data closely approximated those pairs found in outer space in the interiors of, for example, Jupiter.

[en] CHROMATIC PROJECT FOR INFORMATION SYSTEMS: PROPOSAL FOR THE USE OF COLOR IN WAYFINDING FOR HEALTH CARE FACILITIES / [pt] PROJETO CROMÁTICO PARA SISTEMAS INFORMACIONAIS: PROPOSTA PARA O USO DA COR EM WAYFINDING PARA ESTABELECIMENTOS ASSISTENCIAIS DE SAÚDE

MÁRCIA MOREIRA RANGEL 06 September 2017 (has links)
[en] Color is inherent in the human visual experience and is therefore an important attribute in designing a built environment for Health Care Facilities (EAS). In this environment, color has varied uses. From a functional viewpoint, chromatic language codes conform with the color-information so as to assist in the performance of space. In dealing with the user s spatial orientation this approach is for wayfinding, for the use of color-information in the information systems of the built environment - architecture, objects and additional messages. These systems are relevant to projects in the fields of Architecture, Interior Design and Graphic Design. Based on the understanding that the informational potential of color is conditioned to the relation of several variables relevant to their context, this study developed the Chromatic Design model for Information Systems (PCSI). The PCSI is a project-forwarding proposal that includes the interactions of fundamental aspects of color-information in the built environment. Two case studies were developed in which the issues raised in the PCSI were checked. Data show that color-information efficiency in a user s movement through an EAS implies a condition that involves satisfying the following aspects: an interdisciplinary action between designers throughout the processes of the projects involving the use of color in the environment, the theoretical contribution of color basics, color-information, wayfinding and Ergonomics, integrating color-information to information systems and integrating these to the needs of the real user who will be interacting with the environment.

Laser-driven shock compression of liquid mixtures and silica
up to extreme thermodynamic conditions of interest for planetary interior models / Compression de mélanges liquides et silice

Guarguaglini, Marco 15 November 2019 (has links)
Characterising the behaviour of planetary interiors’ components at extreme conditions (megabar pressures, temperatures of a few thousand Kelvin) is essential to build reliable models describing the evolution and structure of planets. In this thesis, we investigated various components on a wide set of conditions using laser-driven shock compression techniques at the LULI2000 (France) and GEKKO XII (Japan) facilities.Single decaying shocks were employed to study high-pressure / high-temperature states. To reach moderate-temperature conditions, closer to planetary interior profiles, we employed static and dynamic pre-compression techniques coupling Diamond Anvil Cells to shock compression and generating double shocks, respectively. We studied the equation of state of water-ethanol-ammonia mixtures and of pure liquid water and ammonia, of interest for icy giant structure models. Pure ammonia measurements have been particularly challenging due to cell design complexity in reason of its reactivity; we provide the first data obtained with laser shocks, in a pressure domain up to now unexplored. Mixtures data are in agreement with recent ab initio calculations based on the linear mixing approximation. We measured the optical reflectivity of liquid mixtures and silica, a key component of rocky planets’ interiors. From reflectivity data we estimated the electrical conductivity of such components — a crucial parameter for modelling the generation of planetary magnetic fields in the interiors via a dynamo mechanism.Water, ammonia, and water-ethanol-ammonia mixtures exhibit different reflectivity (hence conductivity) behaviours as a function of pressure and temperature. This suggests that pure water should not be used in dynamo models as representative of the icy mixtures. Moreover, we provide the first experimental confirmation of recent ab initio studies showing that the conductivity of silica along isothermal lines is not monotonic at moderate temperatures. Our data provide experimental support for the calculations predicting a dynamo action to occur in super-Earths’ and early Earth’s magma oceans.

The Bee &amp; the Crown : The Road to Ascension in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath / Biet och kronan : Vägen till upphöjning i Emily Dickinsons och Sylvia Plaths poesi

Eva, Stenskär January 2021 (has links)
Though born a century apart, American poets Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath share several similarities: Both were born in New England, both fought for their rights by writing, and both broke new poetic ground.          In this thesis, I look at their poetry through a movement in space, which begins with the poets’ precarious position as societal outliers and ends with ascension. I examine what crossing the threshold meant to them, physically and metaphorically, and how it is mirrored in their poems, I look at how the physical space in which they wrote color their poetry, I examine windows as a space of transit, and finally I take a closer look at the shape ascension takes in selected poems. I propose this road, this movement in space, is mirrored in both Dickinson’s and Plath’s poetry.      I use as my method deconstruction, to uncover hints and possibilities. I scan letters and journals, biographies and memoirs. As my theoretical framework, I use Walter Benjamin’s ideas about the threshold as a place of transit, as well as his thoughts about the flaneur as the observer of the crowd, both of which are presented in The Arcades Project. To further examine the threshold as a space for pause, reconsideration, retreat, or advance, I rely on Subha Mukheriji and her book Thinking on Thresholds: The Poetics of Transitive Spaces. I further use Gaston Bachelard’s seminal The Poetics of Spaceto investigate the poets’ response to the physical space in which they wrote. I look at ascension through the prism offered by the ideas of Mircea Eliade as presented in Myths, Dreams, and Mysteries: The Encounter Between Contemporary Faiths and Archaic Realities.
