Mytho-historical mode : metafictional parody and postmodern high irony in the works of Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover, and Ishmael Reed

Beginning with an analysis of Northrop Frye’s concept of modal progression (i.e., the cycle from myth to irony—and back again) and an application of modal theory to an analysis of postmodern narrative forms, the need to revise Frye’s concept of modal progression becomes apparent. Rather than following the cyclical pattern Frye proposes, the course of modal progression appears to be fixed to an axis of experience: a certain normative threshold which describes the narrator’s and/or the narrative protagonist’s power of action relative to an assumed neutral audience. How the narrative depiction of the narrator and/or the fictional protagonist relates to this threshold determines the characteristics of the literary mode. As argued in this dissertation, the increase in the hero’s power of action (typical of late modern and postmodern literature) does not necessarily indicate an abrupt return to the mythic mode (as predicted by Frye). Instead, what is seen to emerge is a decidedly advanced species of narrative irony, or, “high irony” that, while maintaining its distinctly ironic qualities, displays a remarkable tendency to disassemble/reassemble precedent narrative forms (e.g., myth, nonfiction, realistic fiction) into a self-reflexive, highly metafictional form of parody. As the absurd, parodic chaos of the high ironic mode shares several significant traits with both myth and nonfiction, these overlapping, parodic relationships are of great literary importance and theoretical interest. These modal connections and disconnections are what this dissertation attempts to explore and clarify. To that end, this dissertation charts the various ways that myth and nonfictional forms have been put to parodic use in the high ironic metafictions of Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover and Ishmael Reed, three writers whose seminal mid-20th century works did much to shape and direct the course of contemporary American literature. Of special emphasis in this study is the American postmodern preoccupation with revision and the politics of literary subversion that attends this revisionary impulse. The final hypothesis reached by this dissertation is that the literary repercussions of these mid-20th century excursions into ironic, metafictional abstraction have not led to a return to myth, but rather to a discernable tendency among 21st century American writers to return to previously eschewed forms of nonironic narrative. This trajectory thus marks a movement away from forms of narrative irony (as well as away from the mode of myth) and an emerging tendency towards more referential, less fantastic forms of narrative fiction.

Dans la première partie du présent mémoire, l’essai Entre poésie, réalisme magique et postmodernisme : Madman Claro, je tente d’abord de définir les concepts du réalisme magique, de la littérature postmoderne et de la « mi-fiction » (qui englobe peut-être les deux premiers) afin de situer l’oeuvre de l’écrivain et traducteur français Claro au sein du spectre réflexif-mimétique que je propose. Je décris ensuite sa vision de l’écriture et de la littérature avant d’analyser la dissolution des personnages principaux du roman CosmoZ entraînée par le mauvais traitement qu’ils reçoivent aux mains des médecins et du Magicien d’Oz. J’essaie de montrer en quoi ces devenirs-autres sont liés au début et à la fin du monde (qui, lui, ne cesse de recommencer) dans cet ouvrage fabuleusement réaliste où Claro rend des personnages fictifs réels et les fait vivre des aventures rocambolesques et tragiques au début du XXe siècle en Europe et en Amérique. La deuxième partie du mémoire, intitulée Les Fleurs compliquées, est un recueil de nouvelles surréalistes qui demeurent toutefois ancrées dans le monde contemporain et qui mettent parfois en scène des versions diffractées de figures réelles. Alors que le premier récit mêle des contraintes formelles à des questions ontologiques et généalogiques, la deuxième nouvelle, davantage marquée par l’oralité, porte sur une expérience extracorporelle dans une boîte de nuit montréalaise. S’ensuit alors une version satirique et cauchemardesque de la désastreuse tournée 777 de la chanteuse Rihanna, rebaptisée La Reina, qui culmine en un combat inspiré des légendes amérindiennes. La dernière nouvelle comporte six courtes parties enchâssées racontant un même récit de façon non linéaire. Globalement, je vise une certaine saturation baroque : le travail sur l’image, les élans imaginatifs débridés et le rythme jouent donc un rôle important dans ces récits. Sur le plan thématique, je consacre autant mon attention aux silences éloquents du quotidien qu’au legs du colonialisme occidental sur la culture populaire d’aujourd’hui, le tout présenté d’un point de vue féministe et volontairement « ex-centrique ». Enfin, j’essaie, sur un fond d’humour tirant sur le noir, d’accorder une place aux voix marginalisées tout en évitant l’écueil du sentimentalisme et du moralisme sermonneur. / In the first part of this project, the essay Entre poésie, réalisme magique et postmodernisme : Madman Claro, I attempt to define the concepts of magical realism, postmodern literature and “midfiction” (which might transcend the first two) in order to situate the work of French writer and translator Claro within the reflexive-mimetic model that I have laid out. I then describe his view of writing and literature before analyzing the dissolution of the main characters in the novel CosmoZ that is caused by the poor treatment they receive at the hands of various doctors and the Wizard of Oz. My aim is to show how these becoming-others are related to the beginning and the end of the world (which, in turn, never ceases to begin anew) in this work that is both fable-like and realistic, as Claro makes fictional characters real and has them go through incredible and tragic adventures over the course of the first half of the XXth century in Europe and America. The second part of this thesis, entitled Les Fleurs compliquées, is a collection of surrealistic short stories that remain grounded in the modern world and which sometimes feature diffracted versions of public figures. While the first story mixes formal constraints with ontological and genealogical concerns, the second narrative, more conversational in tone, recounts an out of body experience in an after-hours nightclub in Montreal. This is followed by a satirical and nightmarish version of the singer Rihanna’s (renamed La Reina) disastrous 777 Tour, which culminates in a battle inspired by Amerindian folklore. The last story contains six brief interlinked parts that recount a single narrative in a non-linear fashion. Overall, I have aimed for a kind of baroque saturation: my work is thus mostly focused on creating vivid imagery by following flights of fancy while paying attention to rhythm. Thematically, I am interested in the eloquent silences of the everyday as well as the legacy of Western colonialism in modern popular culture, which I have presented from a feminist and consciously “ex-centric” perspective. I have tried, finally, to craft tales that are sporadically darkly humorous and which lend a voice to those who have been marginalized while avoiding the pitfalls of sentimentalism and preachy moralizing.

O principal objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar que no romance Os cus de Judas, de Antonio Lobo Antunes, o momento histórico que corresponde à guerra colonial na África no começo dos anos 70, é questionado por meio da ficção, com a finalidade de esclarecer que não existe uma única verdade a respeito do passado, revisitado neste romance para que possa, finalmente, ser compreendido sob uma nova perspectiva, o que sugere que as verdades são muitas e o registro histórico documentado constitui apenas mais uma delas. O trabalho será realizado na seguinte ordem: primeiro apresentaremos e discutiremos a teoria a respeito do discurso da História e da Ficção. Depois disso, faremos uma análise comparando os cronotopos discutidos por Bakhtin e os encontrados no romance de Lobo Antunes, para finalmente verificarmos como os cronotopos são atualizados em Os cus de Judas e de que forma eles contribuem para que possamos explicar a relação entre ficção e história e também para discutirmos aquilo que Linda Hutcheon denomina metaficção historiográfica. / The main objective of this assignment is to show that in the novel Os cus de Judas by Antonio Lobo Antunes , the historical moment, which is related to the colony war in Africa in the beginning of the 1970, is coming back through the fiction, in order to make clear that there isn\'t only one true about the past, seen again in this novel to make possible for us to understand it in a new point of view, and it suggest that there is a lot of true possibilities and the historical documents are only one of them. This assignment is going to be doing in this order: in the first time, we are going to show and discuss the theory about the speech that differ History and Literature. Secondly we are going to analyze and compare the chronotopes from Bakhtin with the ones finding in Lobo Antunes\'s novel and finally we are going to verify that the chronotopes are actualized in the Cus de Judas and that they are important for us to explain the relationship between History and Literature and to discuss what Linda Hutcheon call historiografic-metafiction.

L’objectif de ce travail est de presenter une analyse du roman Um beijo de colombina, de l’auteur brésilienne, Adriana Lisboa. Il a l’intention de réfléchir sur le deux types de narrateurs qu’il ya dans le roman: em première et en deuxième personne. Il va analyser sur la possibilité de ce romain être une metafiction, pour ça, il va remarquer les traces au long de l’hitoire que sont en dialogue avec cette hypotèse. Finalement, il va etudier les relations d’intertextualité qu’il y a dans l’oeuvre de Lisboa et les poèmes de Manuel Bandeira, une fois que celui sont dans le romain du debut à la fin. Il utilisera pour cette recherche quelques studieux qui parlent sur les narrateurs contemporain comme Jaime Ginzburg, Ronaldo Costa Fernandes et Regina Dalcastagnè; Les chercheur qui parlent de la narrative metafictional comme Gustavo Bernardo et les personne qui montrent les chemin pour refléchir sur l’intertextualité, comme, Mikhail Bakhtin et Julia Kristeva. / O presente trabalho tem por objetivo realizar uma análise do livro Um beijo de colombina, da escritora brasileira Adriana Lisboa. O romance em questão apresenta uma gama de possibilidades interpretativas, uma vez que, em sua construção, mostram-se mecanismos literários variados. O primeiro deles se compõe de dois narradores que se contradizem em suas histórias. Além disso, são inúmeras as reflexões sobre o fazer literário, sobre a construção de personagens e sobre a leitura e a literatura de uma forma geral. Um outro recurso interessante centra-se no fato de o livro ter sido escrito a partir dos poemas de Manuel Bandeira. Nesta pesquisa, pretende-se refletir sobre os dois tipos de narração que aparecem no romance: em primeira e em terceira pessoa. Visa-se também discutir sobre a temática da metaficção; para tanto, serão destacadas as marcas metaficcionais ao longo do enredo do romance. Por fim, estudar-se-ão as relações intertextuais estabelecidas entre a obra de Lisboa e os poemas de Manuel Bandeira, uma vez que perpassam o texto do começo ao fim. Serão utilizados estudiosos que abordam a questão dos narradores contemporâneos, como Jaime Ginzburg, Ronaldo Costa Fernandes e Regina Dalcastagnè; pesquisadores que discutem a narrativa metaficcional, como Gustavo Bernardo e que mostram caminhos para a reflexão sobre a intertextualidade, como Mikhail Bakhtin e Julia Kristeva.

The first part of the work deals with the biographies of the authors, dystopian features of both books and the theory of postmodernism. The second part focuses on practical analyses of both novels. In the second part, the thesis theoretically introduces various concepts of postmodernism and then practically illustrates them on the works.

Essa prÃtica se constrÃi a partir de uma desconstruÃÃo das narrativas bÃblicas e de uma leitura subversiva de alguns dos preceitos que fundaram o ideÃrio ocidental. Ateu convicto, nessas inversÃes antirreligiosas, Saramago, ao mesmo tempo em que questiona crenÃas inabalÃveis, apresenta-nos a desmistificaÃÃo da HistÃria oficial, a partir de uma visÃo humanizadora dos episÃdios bÃblicos. Dentro desse diÃlogo, uma das principais subversÃes que o autor realiza à a inversÃo de papÃis entre Deus e o homem: enquanto este, atravÃs da figura de Jesus Cristo, assume as funÃÃes sagradas de Deus, (principalmente a de ser a medida de todas as coisas), aquele corporifica qualidades tipicamente humanas, comprovando, para o autor, sua ineficiÃncia enquanto entidade superior. Nosso estudo propÃe supor que Saramago materializa a perspectiva do Cristianismo moderno em sua obra, atravÃs da adoÃÃo da ideia filosÃfica da morte cultural de Deus, por meio da humanizaÃÃo e do desvendamento do carÃter cruel e sanguinÃrio dessa personagem. Nosso trabalho pretende, portanto, compreender de que forma esse perfil da religiosidade moderna à incorporado nas narrativas em anÃlise, atravÃs da inversÃo de papÃis entre Deus e Jesus Cristo. Para tanto, faremos uso dos postulados da Literatura Comparada para proceder nossa anÃlise, utilizando tambÃm os conceitos que definem a alegoria, a parÃdia e o dialogismo, alÃm de outras teorias literÃrias de menos ocorrÃncia em nossa anÃlise. Sendo assim, procederemos um apanhado teÃrico que categoriza Saramago enquanto autor pÃs-moderno, tendo em vista a transgressÃo das verdades histÃricas, mÃticas e religiosas que realiza em suas obras. Destacando, nesse sentido, o uso da polifonia do discurso incorporado Ãs obras do autor, permitindo, assim, que emanem, atravÃs da anÃlise das ruÃnas alegÃricas, os outros discursos silenciados pela histÃria tradicional e religiosa, no Ãmbito das intertextualidades que o autor realiza. Nosso cotejamento se dà acerca da estrutura de composiÃÃo dos textos bÃblicos, e da possibilidade de tratamento de tais escritos sob uma perspectiva literÃria. AlÃm disso, difundimos a utilizaÃÃo de dados oriundos dos textos sagrados e profanos que narram a passagem do Judeu da Galileia pela terra, numa atitude desvinculada de qualquer dogmatismo ou intenÃÃo tendenciosa, revelando assim, os discursos suplantados pela leitura teolÃgica de tais textos. Considera-se, entretanto, que mesmo materializando essa perspectiva, os textos de Saramago continuam a povoar o universo literÃrio, nÃo funcionando, assim, como desconstrutores das verdades sagradas do Cristianismo. / One of the predominant themes in Josà Saramagoâs work is the re-reading and the intertextuality with the sacred scriptures which compose the gospels of Christian JudaÃsm. This technique is built from the deconstruction of biblical narratives and from a subversive reading of some of the precepts that founded western ideology. Firm atheist, in these non religious inversions, Saramago, at the same time that questions unwavering beliefs, presents us a desmystification of western official History, from a humanizing view of the biblical episodes. In this dialog, one of the main subversions the author brings is the inversion of roles between God and man: this one, through Jesus Christ figure, assumes the sacred functions of God (mainly the one of being the measure for everything), while that one embodies typical human qualities, proving, to the author, his insufficiency as a superior entity. Our study proposes to assume that Saramago materializes the perspective of modern Christianism in his work, by the adoption of the philosophical idea of cultural death of God, through humanization and unveiling of the cruel and bloodthirsty nature of this character. The idea of divinity will reborn in Jesus Christ, as a man, strengthening, thus, an anthropological thought which sees man as the measure for everything, occupying, because of this, the place of God in the context of Christian religion. Our work intends, therefore, to comprehend the way this face of modern religiosity is incorporated in the analyzed narratives, through the inversion of roles between God and Jesus Christ. For this purpose, we will use some premises of Comparative Literature, as well as some concepts that define allegory, parody and dialogism, besides other literary theories that occur less frequently in our analysis. According to this, we will also proceed to a historical description that categorizes Saramago as a post-modern author, bearing in mind the transgression of historical, mythical and religious truths that he brings in his works. Also, we point out the use of polyphony of the incorporated discourse to the authorâs work, which will let emanate, through the analysis of allegorical ruins, other discourses silenced by traditional and religious History, in the contexts of the intertextualities that the author establishes. Our studies focus on the structures of composition of biblical texts, and on the possibility of treating these writings under a literary perspective. Furthermore, we disseminate the use of data from the sacred scriptures, as well as the profane, which tell about the Jesusâs walk in the Earth, in an attitude disconnected from any dogmatism or tendentious intention, revealing, so, the discourses overcame by their theological reading. We consider, however, that even materializing this perspective, Saramagosâs texts continue inhabiting literary universe, not working, then, as a âdestroyerâ of sacred truths of Christianism.

Taking into account the scope of the dialogical relationships recreated in the Brazilian writer‟s works, this study aims at investigating “intertextuality” through a more flexible point of view, by focusing on history as an intertext in the writer‟s fictional production and in the metafictional process as a dialogue between theory and literary creation. Regarding the relationships between historical and fictional discourse in Ana Maria Machado‟s works, one understands that the texts related to the colonization of America as well as those which refer to the process of dictatorship in Brazil are absorbed as fixed linguistic structures in the official historical discourse. They are, above all, eminent processes marked by tensions in human relationships, which are full of symbolic meaning. The theoretical basis to deal with the topics formerly mentioned are Hayden White‟, Paul Ricoeur‟, Luiz Costa Lima‟, Erich Auerbach‟, Linda Hutcheon‟, AndreTrouche‟, Maurice Halbachs‟, Gaston Bachelard‟ and Gilbert Durand‟s studies. As far as the metafictional process of the works are concerned, one understands that the dialogue between the theory and literary creation goes beyond the limits of the text in construction and promotes a revolutionary effect in the subject involved by the literary writing, because, while they are writing, Ana Maria Machado‟s characters deal with the process of writing itself, and, at the same time, they are able to recognize and reconstitute themselves. Friedrich Schiller‟s philosophical approach about literary creation, Linda Hutcheon‟s theories about the narcissistic narrative and the postmodern poetry, besides Lucien Dällenbach‟s theories about mise en abyme are the theoretical references used in the investigation of this dialogue. / Esta pesquisa trata das relações dialógicas estabelecidas em determinados romances e em determinadas novelas juvenis de Ana Maria Machado, tendo como referências fundamentais os estudos baseados no princípio de dialogismo desenvolvido por Mikhail Bakhtin e que sustenta o conceito de intertextualidade elaborado por Julia Kristeva. Considerando a abrangência das relações dialógicas instituídas nas obras da escritora brasileira, a pesquisa propõe um olhar flexível acerca do termo “intertextualidade”, ao enfocar a presença da história como intertexto na produção ficcional e o processo metaficcional como diálogo entre teoria e criação literária. Em se tratando das relações entre o discurso histórico e o discurso ficcional na obra de Ana Maria Machado, entende-se que os textos relacionados à colonização da América, assim como os que se referem à ditadura militar no Brasil, são absorvidos como estruturas linguísticas fixadas no discurso oficial da história, mas, sobretudo, como processos eminentemente marcados por tensões na esfera das relações humanas, por isso, carregados de representações simbólicas. A base teórica para tratar dessas relações são os estudos de Hayden White, Paul Ricoeur, Luiz Costa Lima, Erich Auerbach, Linda Hutcheon, André Trouche, Maurice Halbwachs, Gaston Bachelard e Gilbert Durand. No que diz respeito ao processo metaficcional das obras, compreende-se que o diálogo estabelecido entre teoria e criação literária extrapola os limites do próprio texto em construção e promove um efeito revolucionário no sujeito da escrita literária, pois enquanto escrevem, as personagens de Ana Maria Machado problematizam o fazer literário e, paralelamente, se reconhecem, se reconstituem, se reelaboram. A abordagem filosófica de Friedrich Schiller acerca da criação literária, as teorias de Linda Hutcheon relativas às narrativas narcisistas e à poética do pósmodernismo, além das teorias de Lucien Dällenbach sobre a mise en abyme, são as referências teóricas utilizadas na investigação desse diálogo.

This work by Ana Miranda is a narrative construction based on confluences and tensions, created by various discourses, transiting on the frontiers between the historical universe and the history, that bring out lived and felt experiences, grouped in the vast imaginary in which the own poet and his work. The mirandian romanesque discourse will be observed here, in its enunciation, in the transfigurative reconstitution, in its narrativity that crosses the historical and social dimensions in its transcritical enterprise. It is intended, therefore, to investigate, in the discourse of transcreation and transfiguration, based on the presuppositions of theorists such as: Mikhail Bakhtin, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Homi Bhabha, Haroldo de Campos, Gérard Genette, Julio Plaza, Linda Hutcheon, others, that instrumentalize our critical discourse in the three chapters of this dissertation, being that in the first one we pointed out how Miranda did emerge the subject narrated by the procedures of its fictional language; and in the second, we dwell on the meanderings of the historiographical metafiction and, in the third, the approaches go back to what was used throughout the dissertation, ascertaining the discursive strategies in which Ana Miranda translates Gregório de Matos Guerra in its multiple dimensions, as central character of his romance. / Neste trabalho, tem-se como objeto de estudo, o romance, Boca do Inferno, de Ana Miranda, adotando como foco a análise interpretativa os influxos da voz narradora em sua imersão, na busca do sujeito icônico: Gregório de Matos Guerra, sua figura controversa; a singularidade de seu estilo, que conferem à sua obra poética importância ímpar para a Literatura Brasileira. Esta obra de Ana Miranda é uma construção narrativa realizada a partir de confluências e tensões, criadas por discursos vários, transitando nas fronteiras entre o universo histórico e o historial, que fazem aflorar experiências vividas e sentidas, agrupadas no vasto imaginário no qual é convertido o próprio poeta e sua obra. O discurso romanesco mirandiano será observado aqui, em sua enunciação, na reconstituição transfigurativa, em sua narratividade que atravessa as dimensões, histórica e social em sua empresa transcriativa. Pretende-se, portanto, investigar, no discurso da transcriação e transfiguração, com base nos pressupostos de teóricos como: Mikhail Bakhtin, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Homi Bhabha, Haroldo de Campos, Gérard Genette, Julio Plaza, Linda Hutcheon, além de outros, que instrumentalizam nosso discurso crítico nos três capítulos desta dissertação, sendo que no primeiro apontamos como Miranda fez emergir o sujeito narrado pelos procedimentos de sua linguagem ficcional; e no segundo, nos detemos nos meandros da metaficção historiográfica e, no terceiro, as abordagens remontam ao que foi empregado ao longo da dissertação averiguando as estratégias discursivas nas quais Ana Miranda traduz Gregório de Matos Guerra em suas dimensões múltiplas, como personagem central do seu romance.

Nous constatons que le genre policier a été une riche source d’inspiration pour des écrivains souvent associés au roman postmoderne. Pour la plupart, les études sur ces réécritures du genre se concentrent sur des auteurs non britanniques, notamment Alain Robbe-Grillet, Paul Auster, Umberto Eco, Jorge Luis Borges et Vladimir Nabokov.Cette étude propose d’analyser des romans et une série britanniques,ainsi qu’un film anglo-américain, réécrivent le whodunit à travers l’intertextualité, la parodie et l’autoréflexivité. Dans ces œuvres métafictionnelles, qui sont toutes apparues depuis le début des années 1980, nous nous demandons si les attentes du roman policier ont complètement basculé ou si elles demeurent, au service d’un autre but.Au lieu de subvertir les conventions du genre classique, nous nous demandons au contraire si les œuvres du corpus les déploient afin de mener une autre enquête : une enquête sur l’histoire et l’identité britannique ? Alors que les œuvres reflètent la crise de confiance envers la représentation de l’histoire qui marque la période dite « postmoderne », reste-il l’espoir de résoudre rationnellement les mystères et les souffrances du passé ? Par conséquent, ces œuvres reflètent-elles une rupture du genre policier ou plutôt la continuité ? / The detective story has been a rich source of inspiration for writers associated with postmodern fiction. For the most part, critical studies of these attempts to rewrite the genre have focused on non-British authors, including Alain Robbe-Grillet, Paul Auster, Umberto Eco, Jorge Luis Borges and Vladimir Nabokov. This study proposes to analyze British novels, a film and a television series which, similarly, rewrite the whodunit through intertextuality, parody and the self-reflexiveness.In these metafictional works, which have all appeared since the beginning of the 1980s, we ask if the expectations invoked by the detective story are completely frustrated or rather if they are employed in the service of another goal. Rather than subvert the conventions of the genre, we ask instead if the works in the corpus deploy them in order to conduct an investigation of another sort: an investigation into British history and identity. While the works reflect in part the crisis of confidence in historical representation that characterizes the postmodern period, we ask whether they display any faith in our ability to rationally unravel the mysteries and the sufferings of the past. In answering these questions we will decide if these works reflect a total break from the detective genre or, in fact, continuity with it.
