Thinking outside the laboratory box : the individualization, surveillance, and moralization of obesity within The Biggest Loser

Matthews, Natasha Nicole 08 July 2010
The purpose of this study is to better understand the ways in which scientific discourse contributes to the individualization and moralization of obesity, through reality television. Popular reality television programs emphasize the importance of lifestyle to health and wellness, often focusing on participant weight loss. Within this research, I describe the ways in which the obesity epidemic is approached in popular reality television, specifically in NBCs The Biggest Loser, and identify how the discourse of obesity is tied to issues of individualization, surveillance, and morality. Specifically, I undertake a laboratory study of The Biggest Loser to illustrate how this methodology can be extended from the traditional laboratory into a space of science that has no formal walls. With a focus on the seventh season of The Biggest Loser, I argue that the program is based on a human experiment that illustrates the interconnectedness of science and society, while perpetuating individualized and moralized obesity discourse. By conducting a laboratory study of a popular television program, I offer a new way to address obesity discourse

Sins sans suffering: children's moralization of victimless actions

Rottman, Joshua 08 April 2016 (has links)
Many traditional accounts of moral development posit that children actively construct moral beliefs by reasoning about the distress they directly perceive in the aftermath of harmful or unjust actions. However, these accounts cannot straightforwardly explain the development of moral beliefs about harmless but tabooed actions. For cases such as these, when no negative behavioral consequences are apparent, top-down socialization processes (e.g., verbal instruction or "testimony" from adults) may instead influence moral development, as well as emotional reactions such as disgust. The present research consists of four studies that empirically examine the mechanisms leading to the formation of moral values involving victimless actions. Seven-year-old children were recruited as participants in this research. They were shown pictures of anthropomorphic aliens engaged in novel body-focused or environment-focused actions, all of which were harmless. After being exposed to one of various experimental manipulations, children were asked to judge whether the depicted actions were "wrong" or "OK". It was hypothesized that participants would readily acquire new moral beliefs upon being exposed to each of the experimental manipulations that were employed, even though none invoked suffering or harm. Study 1 (N = 64) found that information about unnaturalness and the invocation of disgust each elevated moralization, and that their independent effects were compounded when these manipulations were presented jointly. Study 2 (N = 90) demonstrated that verbally presented testimony about disgust, but not the induced emotional experience of disgust, was an effective mechanism for moralization, particularly for children who were more disgust sensitive. Study 3 (N = 30) found that children responded to testimony about anger with similar patterns of moralization as when given testimony about disgust, but that anger-based testimony was especially effective for children who were more highly prone to anger. Study 4 (N = 28) found that children's moral beliefs were retained after a prolonged time delay. In sum, across four studies, children were found to rapidly form new moral beliefs about victimless actions, particularly upon exposure to emotionally laden testimony. Overall, this research demonstrates that children are susceptible to swiftly acquiring moral beliefs even in the absence of obvious adverse outcomes.

The Reception of Visualised Ariosto in the context of Literary Imagery and Moral Philosophy

Modano, Stefania 26 October 2017 (has links)
By analysing the interaction of the paratextual elements, attention has been given to the concept of ‘depicted vice’, that is to say images of dwarfs, giants and animals charged with an important moral role and having a strong visual impact. Indeed, the editors have given special attention to all the paratextual elements qui make Orlando Furioso an exemplary work from the perspective of its language, style, rhetoric and ethics and these have contributed to the canonisation of the poem. Moreover, this canonisation went through one of the fiercest debates in Italian literary history in the second half of the 16th century. Through a new analysis of the principal treatises of the 16th century on poetry and rhetoric, it was possible to see that those involved in this debate, the ‘classicists’ and the ‘modernists’, have put at the heart of their diatribe Ariosto’s ability to bring a concept into a visual form, whilst at the same time associating this visual power of author’s writings with the moral discussion of the poem and its ability to ‘delectare’ in order to ‘docere’ better. These results have also been confirmed by two of the most important interpretations of Orlando Furioso by Campanella and Montaigne, whose interpretations are both ‘visual’ and ‘moral’.The influence of the Italian editions on other editions published beyond the peninsula’s border has also been verified. By following the phases in the circulation of the Italian version of Orlando Furioso in France, but also in a foreign language, it has been possible to confirm the importance of paratextual factors on the circulation and the reception of the work. Starting from a textual (the editions) and formal (the paratext) approach and moving through an interpretative study (the analysis of the "visual" and "moral" value of the paratextual elements), it is concluded that, through successive editions, Orlando Furioso gradually becomes a repository of moral guidance and iconic fragments – raw materials, giving it a new coherence in rhetoric, art and ethics.

The development and validation of a brand-building framework for platform-centric startups

Roshanzamir, Amir H. January 2022 (has links)
Platform-centric startups that generate value by facilitating interactions between two or more interdependent groups digitally transform and disrupt the business environment, leading to significant changes in how people purchase, sell, communicate, and even live. Some of these, such as Uber and Airbnb, have become among the most beloved and successful brands, though they had serious challenges in building up their brands at the early stages due to lack of resources. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a framework of branding in platform-centric startups by identifying the pillars of brand‐building and linking the relevant factors. This study employs qualitative method to propose a four-level framework including passion, innovation, co-creation, and moralization for brand-building in startups. The novelty of this framework reveals that the locus of brand-building is gradually expanding from the founders to the company, then to the customers, and finally to a larger societal constituency. The framework can assist founders and stakeholders in monitoring the growth of a new venture in the real business world while guiding branding scholars to investigate the discipline of startup branding.

No segundo capítulo, as peculiaridades do Programa constituem objeto privilegiado. / This study analyses sociopolitical meaning of moralization of families in poverty situation based on the foundations of the Brazilian current transfer program, Programa Bolsa Família (PBF), and the repercussion of this process under a gender perspective. Developed in three sections this dissertation begins with depuration of the conceptual notion of moralization as well as its correlation with two social justice matrices: the first concerning to income redistribution for overcoming social inequities, and the second resulting of acknowledging women as holders of the support income to the families. The first chapter presents the process of constitution and the structure of a poverty moralizing policy in Brazil based on unfolding of two thesis that serve as its substrate: the negative income tax and the human capital theory. The PBF’s peculiarities are privileged objects of the second chapter. In this section, public policies were considered as devices that hold and create a subjectification space for the beneficiaries, and are grounded on control techniques to those poor families that request State aid for subsistence. At third section, it is examined how such device of public policy to fight poverty incorporates and institutionalizes gender patterns that ends up reinforcing the association of women to the traditional motherhood role as an expression of their moral and public responsibility.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes a reading of the plays Álbum de Família, Anjo Negro, Dorotéia and Senhora dos Afogados, by Nelson Rodrigues, with the puppose of analysing them as texts, dramaturgical works, not as the theatrical entertainment in which they come true. It is restricted, so, to the works in terms of dialogues, with silences, clashes, exclamations; in terms of stage indications and rubrics, of constitutive elements of tragic genre, as well as of the construction of the characters. Having all that in mind, this dissertation proposes that in spite of these dramaturgical works, it would be possible to mark out an approach of reading in which are present concepts and elements from christian mithology. Of all the seventeen Nelson Rodrigues' plays, the reading that we propose concerns Álbum de Família, Anjo Negro, Dorotéia and Senhora dos Afogados for the fact we conceive they stand out from the others due to the recurrence of references and evidences of ideas of moralization from christianism. Besides, we believe that in these four plays, Nelson Rodrigues comes up with a work with elements of tragic genre - what constitutes important part of the analysis carried out here - which is not so remarkably present in other dramaturgical works of the author. Through his peculiar tragic genre, typical of Nelson Rodrigues, which is mostly characterized by the emphasis in the horror, we see that Nelson Rodrigues works with christian elements in a mechanism of moralization, which can be realized, in the four plays, by an engendering of what is not said. Therefore, our reading questions the characterization normally accepted of Rodrigues' work as pornographic, vile, amoral and immoral. This dissertation points out a way through which it is possible to identify a moralizing intention with christian roots in the Nelson Rodrigues' work cited, in a sort of mechanism of observation to the checking, done by George Bataille, in what "literature is, with effect, the extension of religions".

An analysis of versions of the Exodus and the Passion stories in children’s Bibles as a manifestation of use of history

Hultgren Korkis, Jenny January 2021 (has links)
This paper analyzes two selected passages from six children’s Bibles with respect to their use of the narrator’s voice and focalization. This means that the texts are analyzed with a focus on who is telling the story and from whose perspective it unfolds. The analyzes are also built upon what has been added or taken away from the Bible texts and what functions the illustrated pictures have. In this way, the result can also be analyzed through a theory about use of history; that is the idea that morality and identity formatting shape history telling. In this study the different children’s Bibles tend to lift different aspects of the Bible stories. Even though the aims of the book writers cannot be known for sure, their intentions of moralizing or shaping a certain Christian or Jewish identity, such as the institution of pesach or the communion, can be anticipated. Furthermore, the study shows that the children’s Bible genre is often very didactic, while moralization is generally avoided in newer versions. A general distinction between how the Old Testament and the New Testament stories are told can also be spotted. In the latter one, the reader receives more insight about the characters inner and outer speech, which could make it easier to identify and sympathize with them.

Etik och kamerabevakning : Möjligheter och utmaningar / Ethics and camera surveillance : Opportunities and challenges

Rutgersson, Jacob, Emitslöf, Isak January 2021 (has links)
Looking at opportunities and difficulties with the use of camera surveillance is important for the futureof this technology and its use by the Swedish police. The purpose of this assignment is therefore toprovide an overview of the opportunities and difficulties encountered by the Swedish police in the useof camera surveillance in their daily work. The society is affected by these cameras, but what does thesociety think about being monitored in public places? Through interviews and a backgroundpresentation of camera surveillance as well as a theoretical approach with a focus on moralizingtechnology, we have analyzed and discussed various opportunities and problems that the policeencounter. According to studies, a large majority is in favor of camera surveillance, yet there are strictlaws and regulations governing their use. Replacing and simplifying laws will bring responsibility anddecisions closer to the police, opening up possibilities such as the strengthening of witness statementsand a better overview of crime sites, while fear that the technology does not reflect the reality of thesituation. The material provided by the camera surveillance also provides an objective overview whichwould not otherwise have been possible, while police surveillance has limitations.
