The role of social factors in fluencing the moral development

Moral development is a universal phenomenon which is an important ingredient in self-development and the acquisition of values. Adolescents become familiar with values and social norms through education and socialisation within social structures. The South African society evidences pluralistic values and current social, political and economic change that further renders the issue of individual and group values complex and challenging. Adolescents growing up in South Africa face many social problems such as alcohol and drug abuse, sexual problems, HIV/AIDS pandemic, poverty, teenage pregnancy, violence and family disintegration. This study aimed to address the influence of social factors on South African black adolescents’ moral development by a literature study and empirical inquiry using an interpretive approach. To provide a conceptual framework for the empirical inquiry, a literature study investigated theoretical perspectives on moral development and discussed ecological theories with regard to adolescent development with particular reference to Bronfenbrenner’s model. Furthermore, recent trends with regard to moral development of black adolescents within the South African context were addressed. A qualitative research inquiry was used to explore factors influencing the moral development of a small sample of eighteen black adolescents who attend a township school in Tshwane, Gauteng. The sample included an equal number of boys and girls. Maximum variation and purposive sampling strategies were used to select information-rich participants. Data gathering was done by individual semi-structured interviews using a moral dilemma question and focus group interviews. Data was analysed by content analysis and Guba’s model of trustworthiness was used to enhance credibility. Measures to ensure ethical research included consent from the Gauteng Department of Education, the principal and parents. Participation was voluntary and pseudonyms were used to protect the identity of participants. The researcher’s role was described. The key themes were organised around person moral behaviour- shapers, including the sub-themes of personal needs, personal ownership, identity, cognition and the influence of academic achievement; social moral behaviour- shapers, including the role of family, peers, church and social media and community moral behaviour-shapers, including congruent application of values and safety. The Morality of the Black adolescent in a multicultural situation

This study deals with the problem of moral development discontinuity prevalent in today's multicultural societies. Black adolescents are confronted by many obstacles in their situatedness in the home, school and society. It has been revealed that the black adolescent in the multicultural situation is exploited, dehumanised and exposed to impersonal situations when he should be offered moral guidance and challenging moral dilemmas in order to develop his moral sense, however he is consequently reduced to an object that is tossed to and fro by his fellow human beings. The black adolescent, it has been shown, needs his fellow human beings, as transmitters of moral values to help him to achieve a moral-self. This study examines the three multicultural situations, the home, the school and the society and shows that morals are not inherited but acquired through mutual contact. The acquisition of morals manifests itself under conditions characterised by respect, modelling, imitation, indoctrination, reward and punishment, conformity, loyalty, communication, exemplification, socialisation, experience and learning as determined by the home, school and society. It was also found that in their acquisition of morals in a multicultural society, black adolescents experience confusion brought about by the cultural differences of their society. \\!hat they previously regarded as the right thing to do in their cultural background receives negative responses in the multicultural situation. It was further found that black adolescents in a multicultural situation are not provided with sufficient opportunities to participate meaningfully in moulding their new moral environment. The multicultural environment is cold and unfriendly, as a result black adolescents are barred from expanding and anchoring themselves in their new situation to face the challenges confronting them with confidence. The empirical research revealed that in the home parents are too busy with their professional upgrading and the positions they hold at work to bother about the moral upbringing of their children. In school teachers emphasise scholastic achievement above moral development. The society does not provide black adolescents with moral role models to imitate. Society has become to technocratic, with devices such as the TV, radio, Internet and video games, to guide black adolescents in their moral intemalisation. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. Norms for the evaluation of literature focusing primarily on the Frankfurt School

Critical Theory, as posited by members of The Frankfurt School, was evaluated with the objective of attaching an implied ethical dimension. This was discovered in their privileging of a particular type of aesthetic, as evinced in their analysis of certain works of autonomous High Modernism. This implied ethic, which is one based around the concept of enlightenment as potential for emancipation, was then applied as a norm for the evaluation of art. This ethic, however, does not seek to impose a particular reading on (specifically) literary production: Rather, it seeks to impart the importance of a commitment by the literary critic in the use of an ethically based norm, an ethic, what is more, that is based and supported by a discussion of the concepts 'freedom' and Enlightenment. My work analyses the legislation changes in the area of social and legal protection of children in the Czech Republic that have been introduced over the last two years. This work focuses on impacts of these changes in the practice of transferring children to substitute care as well as ethical aspects directly connected with this process. Laws impacting the social and legal protection of children are being compared in order to understand the legal rights of children. The consequences of the legislative changes have a direct effect on the processes of handing children to substitute care. The work is not only concerned with the practical impacts, but also with the ethical side of the problem which was identified as the most important in my thesis. Case reports from my own practice provide a complementary evidence to the reader to better understand the process of placement of children into substitute care both at professional and ethical levels.

The perceptions of Christian performers regarding their career advancement in the entertainment industry

This study unveils the perceptions, real-life experiences and thought-processes of contract workers who dedicate their lives to the Christian faith, values and belief-system, but simultaneously endeavour to establish and follow a successful career in the volatile, cut-throat, non-Christian-based (“hedonistic”) occupational entertainment commerce. The researcher embarked on this study with a qualitative, interpretivist research approach. Data was gathered through in-depth, unstructured, face-to-face interviews with a sample of nine research participants. The sample consists of student entertainers; entertainers in the public eye, but not yet established; as well as entertainers who have successful established careers with loyal national and international audiences in the Entertainment Industry. The researcher explores and seeks to understand the core values and belief systems of the research participants with regards to their Christian religious orientation, which is statistically verified to be the most prevalent religious practise in South Africa (Nation Master, 2013; Religious affiliation by country, 2010). Hence, the research findings with regards to Christians’ approach and attitude towards their careers will contribute to a better understanding and management of the majority of the workforce in South Africa. Moreover, the expected norms, values and work ethic of the Entertainment Industry in South Africa are exposed in this study. Although existing literature upholds that the Entertainment Industry is an exceptionally unstable work environment compared to other corporate industries, this research study adds significantly to current literature as viable causes for the unstable occupational environment are also investigated and presented. Previous research only addressed several aspects of the effect on one’s career advancement if an individual’s core value system differs from the accepted norms in an organisation or industry in general. This study subsequently reveals the personal- and occupational challenges that Christian entertainers encounter in an Entertainment Industry in South Africa and how they subsequently aim to decrease the cognitive dissonance that they experience due to continuous role conflict between moral obligation and the vital necessity for employment and career advancement. De nos jours la mondialisation préoccupe tout le monde : individus, communautés, groupes, Etats, politiques, citoyens ordinaires, universitaires, intellectuels, nonintellectuels, l'humanité. Le fourmillement d'études surtout économiques et la manifestation d'innombrables mouvements sociaux, conférences et discours politiques qu'elle suscite sont les preuves. N’y a-t-il pas là une raison pour en faire un objet de réflexion pour la philosophie, elle qui veut avoir l’intelligence des choses et du monde, être une quête de sens et une prise de conscience des préoccupations du temps ? Certains facteurs permettent de postuler que la mondialisation est un phénomène multidimensionnel, qu'elle manifeste ou exprime l'universel. Quels sont alors les fondements philosophiques du mondialisme, expression de l'universalisme moderne ? Située dans le temps et l'espace, la mondialisation semble ne pas avoir les mêmes effets pour tous. En outre, notre monde mondialisé paraît malade, dangereux et vide de sens. La justice sociale, la paix durable et la sécurité, la solidarité, la préservation de l'écosystème, la survie de la planète terre et de l'espèce humaine constituent ses défis. Ces aspects n'expriment-ils pas le signe d'une rupture avec les valeurs universalistes de la modernité : idéal de liberté, d'égalité, d'autonomie, de paix et de bonheur de l'homme ? How then to found a thought of the universalization which is creative sense and of hope? Thème central des débats du XVIIIe siècle sur les fondements de la sociabilité humaine et sur les sources du Moi, la compassion est aussi l’un des sentiments les plus analysés par Leopardi dans son journal philosophique, le Zibaldone. Or, plus que tout autre siècle ou tradition, le XVIIIe siècle marque de son empreinte l’étude léopardienne des passions humaines. La doctrine de la compassion de Leopardi subit-elle aussi cette influence ? Quelle place occupe Leopardi dans l’histoire moderne des théories philosophiques de la compassion ? Se situe-t-il du côté des défenseurs de la compassion, exemplairement représentés par Rousseau, ou du côté de ses nombreux adversaires ? Après un premier chapitre introductif sur le contexte où prend forme le nouveau paradigme moral et lexical du XVIIIe siècle, cette recherche aborde les grandes questions rencontrées par Leopardi dans son analyse de la compassion : la nature énigmatique de ce sentiment ; ses principes et ses composantes ; les conditions psycho-physiques des différentes catégories de personnes qui sont prédisposées ou non à éprouver ce sentiment ; les objets « pitoyables » ainsi que les états d’âme et les moments de la vie qui favorisent davantage l’apparition de ce sentiment. Enfin, le dernier chapitre ouvre une perspective sur la dernière forme de compassion envisagée par Leopardi : la compassion universelle. Ce travail souhaite ainsi souligner les nuances de la théorie et de l’expérience du sentiment de la compassion chez Leopardi, en montrant la complexité d’une analyse toujours en tension entre anthropologie et morale, ontologie et phénoménologie, philosophie et poésie. / Compassion, at the center of the Enlightenment debate on the fundamentals of sociability and human nature, is perhaps one of the most analyzed feelings in Leopardi’s Zibaldone. Enlightenment contributed, more than any other tradition, to the shaping of Leopardi’s thought, and surely contributed to his interest in passions and human nature. Hence, can we say that it also influenced his examination of compassion ? What is the place of Leopardi within the modern history of the philosophical theories of compassion ? Does he stand with its defenders, whose main champion is Rousseau, or rather with its many opponents ?After an introductory chapter outlining the context in which the new moral and lexical paradigm of the Enlightenment develops, this study explores the topics examined by Leopardi in his analysis of compassion : the enigmatic nature of this feeling, its principles and elements ; the psychophysical conditions of different categories of people who are predisposed, in different degrees, to feel compassion ; the objects that move compassion ; the different moods and stages of life in which one is more inclined to compassion. Finally, the last chapter presents the ultimate form of compassion in Leopardi : the universal compassion. The main goal of this research is therefore to illustrate the diverse facets of the theory and experience of compassion in Leopardi, and to show the complexity of his analysis, which is constantly in between anthropology and morals, ontology and phenomenology, philosophy and poetry. / Al centro del dibattito illuministico sui fondamenti della sociabilità e della natura umana, la compassione è forse uno dei sentimenti più analizzati nello Zibaldone di Leopardi. Più di ogni altro secolo e di ogni altra tradizione, quella illuministica ha contribuito alla formazione del pensiero di Leopardi, influenzandone soprattutto l’interesse verso le passioni e la natura umana. Si può dire che questa tradizione abbia inciso anche sull’analisi leopardiana della compassione ? Qual è il posto di Leopardi nella storia moderna delle teorie filosofiche della compassione ? Si schiera con i suoi difensori, di cui il rappresentante principale è Rousseau, o con i suoi numerosi avversari ?Dopo un primo capitolo introduttivo sul contesto in cui prende forma il nuovo paradigma morale e lessicale dell’illuminismo, questa ricerca affronta le tematiche incontrate da Leopardi nella sua analisi della compassione : dalla natura enigmatica di questo sentimento ai princìpi e componenti ; dalle condizioni psicofisiche delle diverse categorie di persone che sono più o meno predisposte a provare compassione, agli oggetti “compassionevoli” ; dagli stati d’animo ai momenti della vita in cui si è più inclini a provare questo sentimento. Infine, l’ultimo capitolo offre uno scorcio sull’ultima forma di compassione leopardiana : la compassione universale. The thesis "Ethical aspects in the New Year's speeches by Vaclav Havel" interprets and evaluates the content of the New Year's speeches by President Havel in the light of civil and political ethics. In the study part first deals with the theoretical background (the areas of ethical consideration; relationship of ethics, politics, freedom) and also represents Havel`s ethical and philosophical dimension (the philosophical roots and sources of inspiration - the ideas, personalities). The core of thesis analyzes the ethical content and the development of the main ideas New Year's speeches, as well as their contribution to value creation on the road to moral autonomy and a more mature political culture. From the perspective of a new relation and in the context of the former regime, the last chapter reflects on Havel's considerations of ethical topics that are necessary for meaningful functioning of person in society with regard to civil and political ethos.
