The horseback rider and the man who feels very bad. : A critical discourse analysis on the portrayal of a female and a male killer in Swedish media.

Isaksson, Sofia, Colhag, Alice January 2018 (has links)
The focus of this study is to see if there are any differences in the how Swedish media portrays female and male killers. Swedish media’s use of language in relation to the news articles about the perpetrators is the basis of the study. 18 news articles from the newspapers Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and SVT Nyheter were analyzed. The purpose of the study is to see if there are any differences in the portrayal and if so, how they are shown. The analysis constitutes of a critical discourse analysis, also known as CDA, and the framework for text analysis created by Carvalho. The framework creates the possibility of analyzing the texts step by step and helps categorize the different themes in which the language will be analyzed. The categories used in the analysis are object, actors, language, discursive strategies and ideological standpoints. By looking at the linguistic strategies and the choices made by the media we can analyze the material in accordance with the theoretical framework. Critical discourse analysis is the used method as well as theory, along with gender theory about stereotypes and media logic.   The results from the analysis discusses the different discourses found. One of the most prominent phenomenon found was the fact that Swedish media portrayed the killers as their stereotype opposite to them. The results also discuss if the portrayal of the perpetrators can tell us anything about society as a whole.

The executioner’s sword and the newspaperman’s pen in Sweden 1874 – 1910

Carlsson, Clas Göran January 2017 (has links)
Abstract Four executions and one pardon The executioner’s sword and the newspaperman’s pen in Sweden 1874 – 1910 This study examines how three murder cases who lead to a death penalty sentence for the five accused persons are covered in selected contemporary Swedish newspapers. Four of the five condemned persons, three men and one woman, were executed. One man was pardoned. The circumstances in each case are unique. The 1874 murders of Mauritz Upmarks and Johan Larsson in Malmköping, by Gustaf Adolf Eriksson Hjert and Conrad Pettersson Lundqvist Tector, led to the last public executions in 1876 in Malmköping and Visby simultaneously. The murder of Hanna Johansson by her husband, Per Nilsson, and her mother-in-law, Anna Månsdotter, led to the last execution of a woman in Sweden. Her son Per was pardoned. Finally I examine the robbery and murder of Victoria Hellsten at the Gerell exchange office in Stockholm in 1910 by Alfred Ander that led to the only time a guillotine was used in Sweden. It was also the final execution in Sweden. My aim is to examine how selected national and local newspapers covered these crimes, trials and finally the executions. Are there any traceable differences regarding the treatment of the woman on trial in the articles compared to that of the men? Do local and national mewspapers differ in their reporting? I found that there is a great similarity between the local and the national newspapers with a few exceptions. The woman was not subject to favoritism, but rather more critically judged by the writers and the population in her village. Previous studies and literature with connections to my study complete the materials that are used in this examination. My conclusion is that all newspapers that I selected have a negative attitude towards the capital punishment and describe the executions as something horrendous in varying degrees. The descriptions of the perpetrators are matter – of – fact while the victims are treated with sympathy. The newspapers differ in some details but generally their coverages of the murders, trails and executions are of the same pattern. A few newspapers present surprising opinions and individual thoughts. I found that while one cannot claim that the newspapers were demanding a banning of the capital punishment they contributed to the ongoing debate on the subject. There is no favoritism displayed in the articles. The woman and the men are treated equally. My conclusion is that the answers to my questions were found in the selected material.

The case of Emilia Lundberg: A cocktail of sex, drugs and crime journalism : A qualitative study about how local and evening press illustrate the case of Emilia Lundberg

Svensson, Linn, Wiener, Elsa January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to illustrate how a female murder victim is portrayed in local and evening press journalism. This was investigated through a critical discourse analysis that compares Kristianstadsbladet's and Aftonbladet's news reporting in connection with the murder of Emilia Lundberg in November 2019. With a total of 23 articles from Kristianstadsbladet and Aftonbladet we analysed the articles by first studying the texts and their properties. This was done by analysing the discourses that appear in the selection of articles and the word choices that describe Emilia Lundberg as a person and victim. Then we analysed the journalistic conventions, such as dramatisation and sensationalisation which appear in the reporting.  We came to the conclusion that Aftonbladet was more descriptive and focused on portraying Emilia as a person than Kristianstadsbladet was. Emilia was described in Aftonbladet as an innocent, young woman who was murdered by an evil and emotionless murderer, which were elements that could connect her to being classified as an ideal victim in the reporting. However, there were also several important elements in the reporting that spoke against her being an ideal victim, which we believed weighed heavier. This led us to draw the final conclusion that Emilia could not be considered to be an ideal victim in Aftonbladet and Kristianstadsbladet's reporting. We also drew the conclusion that the local and evening press does not deviate from dramatising and sensationalising events of the crime during the reporting process, but that it occurs to a greater extent in the evening press.

Geschwisterrivalitäten im Buch Genesis : Eine literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse ausgewählter Geschwisterrivalitäten / Sibling rivalries in Genesis : a literary analysis of selected sibling rivalries

Martella, Immanuel Matthäus 11 1900 (has links)
This applies in particular to rivalry between brothers. Frequent episodes of reversals and other catalysts ignite conflicts which continually endanger family continuity. Although sibling rivalry has been extensively addressed by the academic research, the analysis of interconnected and recurrent literary motifs among the stories has not yet been sufficiently explored. Therefore, the present study investigates the literary connections among three principal rivalries: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau and Joseph and his brothers. This includes, in particular, the analysis of those texts which deal with the origin, escalation and resolution of these conflicts. As a result of this study, lexical and thematic motifs, as well as motifs of plot development among the stories are worked out. These motifs present a tightly interwoven narrative network among the stories. They reveal a narrative arc of suspense which ranges from the primeval fratricide to fraternal forgiveness, teetering continually on the brink of fratricide / Genesis is a book of family histories which are marked throughout by conflict.
