Att lägga ett pussel : En kvalitativ studie om skolorsarbete med identifikation av och stödjande insatser för nyanlända elever i misstänkta språk-, läs- och skrivsvårigheter / Pieces of a puzzle : A qualitative interview study on how schools identify and support newly arrived pupils with suspected language, reading and/or writing difficulties

Sevä, Marlene, Fahlström, Anna-Lotta January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how schools identify and support newly arrived students in language developmental and/or reading and writing related difficulties. A qualitative design was chosen with semi-structured interviews in which eight teachers and special education needs teachers participated. The interviews were analyzed and categorized, which ultimately resulted intwo themes: Schools’ work with identification and Supportive measures. The results showed perceived difficulties in assessing and supporting newly arrived students in language development and/or reading and writing skills. The causes of this problem were inadequate assessment material, lacking routines for supportive measures and collaboration between the school's professionals, and lack of knowledge about second language development among special needs professionals. Despite the limitations in the scope of the study, the results showed consistency with current research. The authors have highlighted the need for more research on newly arrived students in language developmental and/or reading and writing difficulties, especially regarding the role of special needs professionals.

When my words aren't enough : A qualitative study about art teachers’ choices of strategies when educating newly arrived pupils who do not fully understand the Swedish language

White, Ebba January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to analyze how three high school art teachers educate newly arrived pupils who do not fully understand the Swedish language. The issues contain how the teachers work with certain strategies and what kind of problems and possibilities they perceive when teaching without a common spoken language. The study includes three semi structured interviews – two oral and one written. The results illustrate that all of the teachers had developed, and were in the process of developing, a variety of strategies. Central strategies in creating understanding were multimodal resources specific for the art subject, and the newly arrived pupils’ multilingualism. Mainly two of the teachers wanted to develop their education further through expanded collegiate corporation. The problems that the teachers perceived mainly had to do with lack of time. To better support the newly arrived pupils’ learning situation the teachers needed more time together with the pupils, before they entered the ordinary classes. The teachers mentioned several possibilities concerning the art subjects’ resources as tools in understanding each other. They also emphasized the possibilities of using the pupils’ strongest language in the matter of theoretical assessment.

Samspel, gemenskap och delaktighet : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om inkludering av nyanlända elever i samhällskunskapsundervisningen / Interaction, community and participation : A qualitative interview study on the inclusion of newly arrived pupils in social studies

Larsson, Lisa January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge of different working methods teachers use to include newly arrived pupils in social studies. The study is a qualitative interview study with inspiration from a phenomenological life-world approach. Through a qualitative research interview with primary school teachers in grades 4–6, data has been collected. The collected data has been categorized based on three themes. The three themes that the result consists of are: tools for inclusion, inclusion difficulties and the importance of the social science topic. The theoretical starting point of the study is socio-cultural theory and from this perspective the result has been analyzed and theoretical interpretations have been created.   The results of the study show that teachers use several different tools to include newly arrived pupils in social studies. It appears that inclusion is a difficult-to-interpret-concept that is very dependent on the individual, which means that inclusion can look very different depending on the individual. Collaboration with study supervisors, interdisciplinary workingmethods, digital tools, placement, creating understanding of the students, community and interaction are all important parts of the inclusionprocess. The result also show difficulties with inclusion and these include abstract subject concepts, deficiencies in the Swedish language, difficulties in social interaction, misunderstandings, the students 'different experiences, the students' view of reality, the broad content of the social science subject and the fact that the subject is contextual. The teachers in the study agree that the subject of social studies is an important part of the newly arrived pupils' inclusionprocess in Swedish society.

Voropai, Olga January 2018 (has links)
The question that I would like to visualize, rethink and reassess is the relationship between the theoretical and practical knowledge in my profession. I work as a guidance counselor in the subject of mother tongue with newly arrived pupils. The aim with my essay is to process and stigmatize literary researches as well as my own theoretical and practical knowledge, thoughts, experiences and reflections. I am analyzing the profession of a guidance counselor and the everyday life in my situation as a mother tongue teacher. I stress the knowledge and abilities that are needed for a guidance counselor to analyze my own teaching methods on a deeper level. I hope that my experience, practical and theoretical knowledge can benefit colleagues in the same profession as me, and especially those who work with newly arrived students in Sweden. I have chosen to write this essay on the basis of my self-perceived events to analyze my own teaching methods for a better understanding. In my research, I came to the conclusion that both theoretical and practical knowledge are both equally as important in my profession.

Sundström Rask, Katarina January 2018 (has links)
Children who migrate to Sweden are usually introduced to the Swedish school through some kind of introduction programme in their new community. This study examines the experiences of newly arrived children participating in school introduction in the early school years, as well as the experiences of the teachers and principals working with the programme. In the community in which this study is situated, newly arrived children participate in a special school unit where the goal is to map their experiences and skills from former education, and where the teaching of Swedish as a second language is seen as an important part of the introduction. Forty-two interviews (40 individual and 2 pairs) were conducted with principals, teachers and newly arrived children (ages appropriate for Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 in elementary school). Employing a social constructivist perspective, together with inspiration from Critical Discourse Analysis, the study aimed at outlining the discourses the participants draw on when speaking about the school introduction and how these discourses affect the participants’ positioning of themselves and other participants in the school practice. Fairclough’s theory of discourse (1992, 2001) provides an understanding of how participants experience being part of the school introduction as well as their own and other participants’ positions in the school practice due to ambient discourses. The results indicate that four discourses dominate the practice and affect the participants’ view of each other and themselves as well as their possibilities to impact the practice and their own situation as being a part of it. The four discourses that were identified are described as 1) the Swedish language as a key to success in school, 2) the adjustment of behaviour as a key to success in school, 3) the substantial immigration as a challenge, and 4) heed.
