An assessment of strategy implementation for improving learner performance in secondary schools of two districts in Zambia

Kandeke, Grace 07 1900 (has links)
The phenomenon of strategy implementation is crucial to the improvement of learner performance, and to the effectiveness of schools. Literature reveals that research on strategy implementation has received much attention in business studies. However, little attention has been given to it in schools. It is this gap which this study endeavours to fill. The key research questions for this study aimed at garnering evidence on factors that influence strategic plan implementation. In the empirical study, two secondary schools and three education offices were purposively selected. A mixed methods research design was adopted, and in this regard, data was collected using interviews, focus group discussions, document analysis, participant observation and questionnaires. Data was analysed by means of organising, coding and categorising. The main findings of the study are that the factors that affect School Strategic Plans (SSPs) implementation are largely related to education management at all levels. There is also anecdotal evidence that teacher, learner and external stakeholder factors affect the implementation of SSPs. In all these factors, monitoring was the major factor. One recommendation proposes that the education managers at provincial and district levels and implementers at school levels should all be empowered with skills and knowledge on effective strategy implementation. / Collective understanding of the actual activity of participatory organization design : advocacy for a enabling ergonomic intervention

Raspaud, Anne 10 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis develops and applies the paradigm of constructive ergonomics to organizational design. The development of individuals and organizations is presented through the capability approach, and more specifically through the approach of collective capabilities. These are not the mere juxtaposition or aggregation of individual capabilities but involve the emergence of a new and collective possibility to act and create. In this constructive and developmental perspective, the research is based on a redesign intervention regarding an innovative care process - outpatient surgery. It defines and implements an intervention methodology that considers development as the means and the end of the action. The methodology rests on setting up an enabling environment (at least during the intervention) and an ergonomic approach which supports the development of operators' capabilities through the joint collective activity. This process promotes a collective agency which allows the group to fulfil a common goal of transforming work rules. This shared commitment within the group and the actual opportunities for change have facilitated the design of an organization of collective work. The ergonomic intervention has proceeded in 2 steps: the construction of a diagnosis regarding the situation to be transformed and the management of the organizational change. The first step consisted in analyzing work and its contradictions: is the organization impeding or encouraging the joint collective activity development? Is it a resource for the development of collective capabilities? The diagnosis has highlighted the disruption of professional standards of care staff generated by outpatient surgery and the difficulty of the care staff in building an organization that promotes a transverse team and a collective joint activity. In view of these results, the second step has fostered and supported the active participation of operators in processes of change and design. At first, the ergonomist has implemented a dynamics encouraging the debate about the representations of work. This has led to a shared representation of the current situation, required for the design of a future situation. Then, a participatory methodology of organizational design has been implemented leading to an organization project of ambulatory surgery. Finally, this research questions the role of the ergonomist as a conversion factor in this process of organizational transformation and proposes a model of ergonomic transformation action.

Marketing strategies of textile companies : the case of selected medium and large Ethiopian textile companies

Aschelew Degoma Durie 03 1900 (has links)
The objective of the study was to examine the marketing strategies of Ethiopian medium and large textile companies. The textile sector became the focus of this study because it has performed far below expectation, despite the government‘s unreserved support to the sector and the country‘s comparative advantage in the sector. To attain the stated objective, qualitative research approach with case study design was employed. The cases were selected based on two criteria; production of finished textile products and operation in both local and global markets. Accordingly, nine companies qualified these criteria and all of them were used as cases. The RBV was the theory employed to explain the differences in performances among firms‘ in similar environment. Furthermore, within and cross case analyses were employed to get in-depth understanding and to explain about the marketing strategies of the firms. The major findings of the study indicate that the emphasis given to marketing strategy and the marketing resources and capabilities commitment thereof were found to be so low that the companies seemed to equate marketing strategy with selling strategy. Furthermore, the companies failed to link their marketing enabling environment with their marketing strategy. Similarly, such weak link was reflected between the firms‘ marketing strategy and their market performances. Hence, the marketing strategies of the case companies are so weak that with their current marketing strategy, it is difficult for them to be competent in the local market, let alone in the international markets. Generally, both empirical and conceptual conclusions were drawn from the findings. As a result, the cross-case findings indicate that marketing resources commitment is linearly linked to marketing strategy which in turn is linked to export performances. Therefore, it can be understood that the link between enabling environment and marketing strategy is direct and the link between marketing strategy and marketing performances is linear. Hence, it can be understood from this transitivity that there exists a link between firms‘ enabling environment and their marketing performances. / Business Management / D.B.L.

First, a brief description of the organizational knowledge is done, aiming to identify some of its meanings and perspectives in the literature for the management of an existing knowledge, as well as for the creation of a new knowledge, be it individual or organizational. Next, to illustrate the theoretical findings, providing it with concrete legitimacy, a field research is presented, in format of a case study of a consumer goods industry, seeking to analyze the organization knowledge creation standpoint in terms of its enabling conditions and the SECI process as developed by Nonaka (1994) and Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), in order to highlight its main elements, circumstances and effects on the operational level, namely, the product development team. Thus, at the end, hoped is to have detached some of the multiple facets of the knowledge management, its difficulties and possibilities as an strategic resource, and, above all, pointed out real creation and use dimensions for that knowledge by examining its application to the product development process in a consumer goods company in Brazil.

These knowledge assets that are beyond those required by the roles and functions, here called 'cognitive surplus', could induce strategic flexibility, create distinctive intangible assets and generate additional value. However, the logic of the traditional strategy based on efficiency and rationality defines the demanded knowledge and creates a rule, a strategic rigidity that limits the space for contributions arising from the cognitive surplus that may not be directly related to the goals and targets established in the strategic plan. Another logic based in the cultures of participation, abundance and generosity is brought to account , in which the following boundary conditions can be observed: (i) cognitive surplus can be identified as rare, valuable, non substitutable, difficult to imitate and derived from long processes of development, therefore, they can distinguish the organization from the others of the sector; (ii) the cognitive surplus can induce new dynamics of operation for enabling contexts, and (iii) enabling contexts can act as potential places for disclosure, mobilizing and use of these surpluses. The research used, predominantly, the method, procedures, and qualitative techniques. Specialists who work as researchers and consultants with recognized projection in Strategy, Knowledge Management and People Management were interviewed. The results showed how organizations deal with the cognitive surplus; what organizations could do with the cognitive surplus; barriers that rise to the disclosure, mobilization and use of these surpluses; which governs the creation of current contexts; the existence or no interaction spaces intentionally constructed by organizations; the attitudes of members of organizations in relation to cognitive surplus; and, the perceived benefits which cognitive surplus can bring to the significant stakeholders of the organization.

Kock, Marcus, Vilhelmsson, Soile January 2017 (has links)
There is a great deal of interest in how the management of the Swedish public sector works and how it affects its employees. The Swedish public sector is considered well-functioning in the world and, as public sector, it has many challenges in the design of management system. Försäkringskassan is a Swedish authority that a large part of Sweden’s populations comes into contact with. This study aims to show how the management control can work on a local level. We have conducted a case study on Försäkringskassan in Luleå based on enabling and coercive control. We find that Försäkringskassan has elements of both enabling and coercive control. Case workers are guided by quantitative measures, but they are also given the opportunity to influence how the control system is designed as well as to gain insight into how the control system is designed and why. The case workers also feel to some extent that the focus is in the quantitative measurements and that they are largely expected to do a certain number of cases per day.

Factors affecting digital transformation in manufacturing companies

Eluekezi Nnewuku, Rosa, Tuncay, Hatice January 2021 (has links)
The adoption of digital transformation can be seen as the companies opportunity for increased competitiveness. The possibilities of digital transformation are many as it allows, among other things, a connection between workers and machines or between machines. However, companies are facing difficulties to implement digital transformation effectively. Implementing digital transformation is a slow process for companies and most companies are in the early stages of it. Also, the technologies that are associated with digital transformation are still unclear. Companies still lack a systematic approach to implementing digital transformation. Understanding critical factors that affect digital transformation in manufacturing companies could help to develop a systematic approach for implementing digital transformation. Therefore, in this research the authors have carefully reviewed and identified factors that affect digital transformation within the manufacturing industry. This thesis research aims to identify the factors that will lead to the success of digital transformation in manufacturing companies and to also find out the factors that when being ignored will lead to unsuccessfulness. The research has been guided by three research questions: 1) Which factors are stated in the literature that is affecting the implementation of digital transformation in manufacturing companies, 2) How are these factors related to each other in the literature, and 3) How can practitioners and academics use factors for the successful implementation of digital transformation? In this research, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been carried out which has led to identifying 11 key factors. Based on the identified factors, a model has been developed to support the implementation of digital transformation in manufacturing companies. The model consists of four different categories of factors, namely, “Awareness related factors, Readiness related factors, Technology, Selection, and Integration related factors (so-called ARTO-model. Furthermore, a survey has been developed to get experts´ perspectives on the identified factors and the model.  Based on the input from the survey, a final compiled ARTO model is proposed as a guiding tool for the successful implementation of digital transformation. Further, a model to show the relationship between the factors is created. Keywords: Digital transformation, Digitalization, Industry 4.0, Enabling technologies, Key factors, Critical factors, Manufacturing industry, Guiding framework / Implementeringen av digital transformation kan ses som företags möjlighet till ökad konkurrenskraft.

Värnlund, Matilda, Munira, Ibrahim January 2021 (has links)
