School management teams' management of the school-based continuous professional development of teachers

Brijkumar, Amritha January 2013 (has links)
This study focuses on how school management teams manage the school-based continuous professional development of the teachers at their schools. The assumption is that continuous professional development - if school-based - may be more practical in implementing changes because the teachers will be working in a familiar context when managing their own development and in meeting the specific needs of their school. At present the professional development of teachers consists mainly of external workshops and courses. Teachers then return to the school context that has not changed to accommodate what has been learnt at these workshops or courses. The lack of feedback or follow-up has done little to encourage teachers to implement any changes in their teaching practice. The study also explores the practice of school management teams in creating collaborative school cultures for the implementation of schoolbased continuous professional development. The rationale for this study is based on the urgent need for continuous professional development to be part of the schools’ development of teachers. The National Policy Framework for Teacher Education and Development provides the frame of reference. There is, however, a gap in the policy on how continuous professional development should be implemented to create a collaborative school culture and the role that the school management team plays in doing this. The aim of the study was to determine how school management teams managed continuous professional development at their schools; to identify the challenges they faced in managing school-based continuous professional development; and to explore the strategies that contributed to successful school-based continuous professional development. The research methodology employed in this study is a Triangulation Mixed Methods Design. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected simultaneously and analysed separately to understand the research problem. The sample consisted of principals, deputy principals and heads of department of primary schools who were interviewed. Questionnaires were administered to Level 1 teachers at these schools. The interviews were analysed by identifying emerging patterns, themes and categories. The questionnaires were analysed by presenting descriptive statistics about the schools and then inferential statistics were determined that correlated and tested the hypotheses. The results were reported in the form of summaries from the interviews and graphs from the questionnaires. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Closing the Gaps in Professional Development: A Tool for School-based Leadership Teams

Sampayo, Sandra 01 January 2015 (has links)
The field of professional learning in education has been studied and added to extensively in the last few decades. Because the importance of learning in authentic contexts through professional dialogue has become so important, high quality, school-based professional learning is vital to building capacity at the school level. Unfortunately, the literature on professional development (PD) does not provide much guidance on how to bridge theory and practice at the school level, creating a gap. With the goal of PD ultimately being to improve teacher performance and student learning, the problem with this gap is that school-level professional development is arbitrarily planned, resulting in variable outcomes. I propose the reason for this is schools lack a comprehensive framework or tool that guides the design of a quality professional learning plan. This problem was identified in Orange County Public School and this dissertation in practice aims at developing a solution that accounts for the district*s specific contextual needs. My proposed solution is the design of an integrative tool that school leaders can use to guide them through the professional development planning process. The School-based Professional Learning Design Tool incorporates the professional development standards in planning, learning, implementing, and evaluating outlined in the Florida Professional Development System Evaluation Protocol. It also guides leaders in taking an inventory of the culture and context of their school in order to plan PD that will be viable given those considerations. The components of the Tool guide teams through assessing school teacher performance and student achievement data to help identify focus groups; determining gaps in learning through root cause analysis; creating goals aligned to gaps in performance; and selecting strategies for professional learning, follow-up support, and evaluation. The development of the Tool was informed by the extant literature on professional development, organizational theory, state and national standards for professional development, and principles of design. The Tool is to be completed in four phases. Phases one and two, the focus of this paper, include the literature review, organizational assessment, design specifications, and the first iteration of the Tool. In the next phases, the goals are to solicit feedback from an expert panel review, create a complete version of the Tool, and pilot it in elementary schools. Although the development of the Tool through its final phases will refine it considerably, there are limitations that will transcend all iterations. While the Tool incorporates best practices in professional development, the lack of empirical evidence on the effectiveness of specific PD elements in the literature renders this Tool only a best guess in helping schools plan effective professional development. Another limitation is that the Tool is not prescriptive and cannot use school data to make decisions for what strategies to implement. Taking these limitations into consideration, the use of this Tool can significantly impact the quality and effectiveness of professional development in schools.

En stillbild av paraprofessionella : En explorativ studie om skillnader i elever och lärares uppfattningar om sociala aspekter från två olika skonkontexter / A snapshot of paraprofessionals : An exploratory study on differences in students' and teachers' perceptions of social aspects from two different school contexts

Hallin, Joy January 2024 (has links)
In today's educational environment, it is increasingly recognized that schools can vary significantly in their structure, student composition, and staffing, which can impact both students' and teachers' perceptions of the school environment. One professional category that has become more common in the school setting is paraprofessionals. The purpose and tasks assigned to this group can vary from school to school, but their work often involves promoting social aspects within the school environment and providing social support to students. Since some schools have implemented paraprofessionals with these roles while others have not, this study aims to analyze and describe a snapshot of two different school contexts using data from TIMSS 2019. Specifically, the aim is to examine differences between school contexts with and without paraprofessionals regarding students' and teachers' perceptions of social aspects in the school environment. To explore and describe these differences, a cross-sectional and exploratory design with a quantitative approach has been used. The results indicate that there may be differences in students' perceptions of classroom climate and in teachers' job satisfaction regarding time-related conditions. These findings underscore the importance of understanding how different school contexts affect the school environment and can contribute to informing future school development initiatives.

A school leadership perspective on the role of emotional intelligence in the development of secondary school student leaders

Moosa, Shehnaz Omar 11 1900 (has links)
is imperative for the South African education system to produce youth who are empowered to grow to be leaders of integrity and courage. Student leaders (prefects) face an enormous challenge in trying to persuade peers to be motivated and self-disciplined. The student leaders need to understand themselves as well as their peers in order to make considered responses to their peers. The level of emotional intelligence of student leaders will determine the effectiveness of their response to fellow students (learners) and allow them to fulfil their leadership responsibilities effectively. Emotional intelligence leadership (EIL) profiles were obtained from an emotional intelligence leadership questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews which explored the role of emotional intelligence in student leadership. These research techniques allowed the researcher to gain insight into each student leader’s level of emotional functioning as well as to identify emotional intelligence leadership skills that needed to be developed further. The importance of providing training and opportunities to practise leadership skills at school was emphasized. / Teacher Education / M. Ed. (Educational Management)

Violências no contexto escolar: um olhar freiriano. / Violences in school context: a view freirean.

Yamasaki, Alice Akemi 03 April 2007 (has links)
Some reflections are presented in this work trying to account for various kinds of violence observed to exist in the school context. Violence is here understood as a social and historical manifestation of a multiplicity of complex dimensions and factors, which interact with the cultural environment of the school. We are dealing here with a theoretical investigation primarily based on a documentary study of school violence and, additionally, in a study of municipal public schools in São Paulo. One of the main objectives with this study was to identify the various dimensions of violence in the school context. This was done by presenting a synthesis of available readings of the world (\"leitura do mundo\") concerning this topic, based on the analysis of various studies carried out after the 1990s. Moreover, another aim with this thesis was to characterize violence as a theme addressed by Paulo Freire in various of his works. Whereby he made explicitly identified some dimensions of violence both to denounce them as well as to point towards alternative possibilities to construct another possible world. In the review of the literature dealing with school violence, we gave priority to research results found in books and scientific articles. Thematic study and text analysis were included among the various methodological and social research techniques used in this work to support our theoretical constructs and also as guidelines for our documentary work. The concluded that school violence must be considered in two distinct planes. On the one hand, with reference to the material and objective losses and different kinds of physical aggresions. On the other hand, taking into account the symbolic dimension, one refers to the subtle imposition of inappropiate meanings attached to the violent acts in the community, with a particular emphasis on the rejection of \"otherness\", and a growing sense of insecurity, fear and distrust in the realm of interpersonal relations. Paulo Freire\'s prescription for overcoming this kind of violence lies, in the response potential of the oppressed to confront the necrophilic conscience inherent in violent gestures and actions. The oppressed, by assuming their vocation to be human, to value life, to raise over and above mean and individualistic values and interests. By assuming love as their preferred instrument of their struggle, they will be able to construct another civilization, more human, less oppresive and more just. Taking into account the reflections of Paulo Freire on the matter of school violence, here approached as a subject for investigation and reflection, lead us to understand that it is possible to historically confront it in both the social and school realms. This work points to a renewed potential of the public and popular school, when based in the critical and progressive conceptions and practices of education. A kind of school that must be (historically) constructed as a space of concietization, struggle and of confrontation against all the various manifestations of violence inflicted and adversely affecting the potential victims. We find that dialogue, dialogic and liberating education constitute some of the fertile ways we have at our disposal to attain our aims of diminishing both physical and symbolic violence in the school context and culture.

Second Language Teacher Education (SLTE) as a field of inquiry has developed under the strong influence of Sociocultural Theory (SCT) over the past decades. The findings of this Applied Linguistics (AL) branch of investigation have contributed greatly to the development of second language (L2) teaching programs in general and to learning to teach L2 programs in particular. Main themes of inquiry in the SLTE field are related to practitioners’ experiences in learning and teaching the L2; the origins and the unfolding of teacher cognition and its impact in L2 teaching; and the role of contexts of learning and of teaching L2. Along with the target language, these three topics — experience, cognition, and contexts — are part of a system that comprises the learning to teach English language in the Brazilian secondary school context, which is proposed to embrace a construct of learning to teach in such specific setting. The aim of this study is to contribute to the debate on the improvement of Brazilian secondary schooling by departing from AL findings on SLTE — as opposed to the acceptation of teacher training. The advocacy / participatory approach of this qualitative study is reinforced by the collaboration of seven secondary school English language teachers, who contributed with their written narratives followed by structured interactive interviews. The prime contribution of this study is the proposal of an alternative perspective to English language teacher education, i.e., one that actually acknowledges the systemic intertwinedness of agents in English language teachers’ professional development, particularly from a situated point of view. In order to do so, a construct for SLTE for Brazilian secondary English language teachers is presented and developed from the perspective of Complexity Theory.

The research includes two dimensions: the first one focus the municipal system, exploring the structure set for the in service training programs; and the second one examines this process at two municipal preschools. The research followed a qualitative methodology; it collected and analysed the municipal legal and orientation documents and the written records about the training practices developed by the schools management teams (composed by one principal, one pedagogical adviser and one assistant teacher at each school). Nowadays, teacher s formation is a controversial field, where are reflected different ideas on models for people, school and society. The preschool teacher formation is part of this scene, defined, however, by its own specific features. The specific literature concerning the formation of early childhood education teachers has been asserting the knowledge built about childhood, as relevant in their training programs. . In this sense, this dissertation attributes centrality to this generational category, as a central aspect for the early childhood education teacher s formation. The research results reveal, at the municipal level, several contradictions and a lack of importance given to the early childhood education particularities; at the same time, results show that the municipal documents offer an important general structure for the training process developed at municipal schools. In the two preschools it was observed that conceptions about early childhood education and teacher formation followed more integrated and holistic perspectives, what can be explained by the professionals own formation experiences that showed influences from past external advisors. The research also registered a relative lack of initiative by the teachers at the in service formation programs, in comparison with the active leadership of the management team at each school / Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a formação continuada do professor de educação infantil, desenvolvida no contexto de duas pré-escolas públicas, no município de São Bernardo do Campo, estado de São Paulo.

In the research the background of physical education teachers were sought along with its basic conceptions and perpectives of change, as well as the valoration of the physique in pedagogic practice which occasionaly becomes the trigger for violence in school context and, thus presenting cooperative sports as a possible alternative for methodologic changes in this practice. The methodology was developed in a qualitative form through an exploratory research made in three cities in the west of Parana State, Brazil. The schools were intentionally chosen due to its geographic location on a sample of 18 teachers of PHYSICAL EDUCATION and 170 students chosen at random. The methodologic procedure consisted of semi-structured interviews and local observations in which the presents of violent attitudes performed by these teachers were verified. Such attitudes are related to their practices and the predominant misplacement and misconceptions of sports. These practices are simbolically interpreted as violent actions shown through the devaluation of classes, the voice’s high tones when claimming the student’s attention, the irony in interpersonal relationships, the debasing of the less skilled (females in its great majority), the uniqual punishment for students with the same misdemeanor producing unequality in the comparisons made between the students and there judgments awareness, misinformation at the occasion of basic ground rules of the subject and, chiefly, the exclusion and devaluation of some particular students. In connections to the teaching of sports, this is shown in its utilization as a merely thecnical and exludent activity, thus forgetting that sports, when developed and thought in a ludic approach allow pleasure and happiness, becoming something pleasant independently of whether someone is a winner or not. In the development of such discussion some reflections are presented, regarding the importance of some changes in the professional’s menthality by the use of a few Paulo Freire’s categories such as fondness and dialogicity without which teaching thecniches renovation and awareness counciousness raising becomes a hard task.
