Unterschütz, Lena 07 June 2024 (has links)
The external marginal and internal tooth veneer as well as the restoration surfaces were examined. Thirty-two extracted premolars were restored with resin-based composite (RBC) and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) veneers. Artificial aging by alternating thermocycling and subsequent prophylaxis procedure (glycine-based powder air polishing or ultrasonic scaling) was conducted for five consecutive cycles. The external marginal interface was examined by height profile measurements and the internal interface was investigated using micro X-ray computed tomography. In addition, the surface texture of the veneer surface was analyzed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The application of both prophylaxis procedures resulted in a deepening of the marginal interface (10 μm ± 8 μm) for materials. Furthermore, the internal interface of PICN restorations showed marginal gaps after both treatments and artificial aging (16 μm ± 3 μm). In contrast to the RBC specimens, a significant increase in surface roughness was identified for PICN veneers after ultrasonic scaling. The marginal and internal interface regions in veneers fabricated from PICN and RBC were affected by prophylaxis procedures. Furthermore, it may result in increased veneer surface roughness, especially in PICN and after ultrasonic scaling, which might affect bioadhesion and longevity. After dental prophylaxis procedures, examination of the marginal and the internal interface as well as the veneer surface provides a precise insight into damage mechanisms and offers an assessment of longevity.:Abkürzungsverzeichnis III 1 Einführung 1 1.1 Nicht kariöse Zahnhartsubstanzdefekte 2 1.1.1 Abfraktion 3 1.1.2 Abrasion 3 1.1.3 Attrition 3 1.1.4 Erosion 4 1.2 Klassifizierung der Keramiken und der Verbundwerkstoffe 4 1.2.1 Glasmatrix-Keramiken 4 1.2.2 Polykristalline Keramiken 5 1.2.3 Komposit-Matrix-Keramiken 5 1.2.3.1 Grandio Blocs (RBC) 6 1.2.3.2 Enamic (PICN) 6 1.3 Professionelle Zahnreinigung und ihre Auswirkungen 7 2 Publikationsmanuskript 9 3 Zusammenfassung der Arbeit 23 4 Literaturverzeichnis 27 5 Anlagen 31 5.1 Ergänzende Informationen / Supplemental Material 31 5.2 Darstellung des eigenen Beitrags zur Publikationspromotion 33 5.4 Erklärung über die eigenständige Abfassung der Arbeit 35 5.5 Lebenslauf 37 5.6 Eigenes Publikationsverzeichnis 39 5.7 Danksagung 41

Thin Films for the Transport of Polarized Ultracold Neutrons for Fundamental Symmetry Study

Mammei, Russell Rene 24 August 2010 (has links)
The use of ultracold neutrons (UCN) to study fundamental parameters such as the neutron lifetime and decay correlations in polarized neutron beta decay are poised to make significant contributions to our understand of the Standard Model and its extensions. To this end, the UCNA experiment is pursuing a precision measurement (0.2%) of the angular correlation between the neutron spin and the direction of emission of the electron in polarized neutron decay (the ``A'' asymmetry). The UCNA experiment makes use of the spallation-driven solid deuterium (SD2) UCN source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). The UCN leave the source and are 100% polarized by passing through a strong magnetic field before their decay is observed by a very sensitive electron spectrometer. UCN guides facilitate the transfer of UCN from the source to the spectrometer. Common guide materials include stainless steel, copper, aluminum, and quartz. Often a thin film is applied to these components to increase their ability to transport/bottle and preserve the polarization of UCN. In the region of the SD2 UCN source, nickel-58 films are applied, whereas once the UCN are polarized, diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are employed. This dissertation covers the application, process developments, and characterization of these coatings. In addition a study concerning the surface finish resulting from the mechanical polishing and electropolishing of the guides that make up the UCNA beamline is presented. / Ph. D.

Efficacy of air-polishing in disinfecting implant surfaces. A laboratory study simulating a non-surgical approach.

Isik, Alexandra, Truong, Tai January 2021 (has links)
Aim: To evaluate different parameters potentially affecting the efficacy of air-polishing devices in disinfecting implant surfaces in a non-surgical treatment approach of peri-implantitis lesions. Material and method: Altogether, 56 turned and 56 moderately rough implants were coated with a simulated biofilm. The implants were mounted in customized resin models simulating peri-implant 30° bone-defects, 3- and 5-mm deep; soft tissues were simulated with ballistic gelatin. Each implant was cleaned for 30 or 90 seconds in total (6 sites pr. implant; 5 or 15 seconds pr. site) with one of two different air-polishing devices (W&H and EMS). Implants were photographed in three different angulations and the amount of residual biofilm on the implant surface was measured digitally. Beta-regression models were used to assess the outcome. Results: Implant surface, treatment time and air-polishing device significantly affected the amount of residual biofilm. Turned implant surface, longer treatment time, and using the EMS device resulted in significantly less residual biofilm. In the most apical part of the defect, both air-polishing devices performed similarly, however, this was also the area with most biofilm left compared to more coronal aspects. Defect depth had no significant effect.  Conclusion: Superior biofilm removal is achieved at implants with turned surface, and when applying longer treatment time. At the deepest aspect of the defect, implant decontamination is compromised.

Styckares arbete : knivskarpt om hållbarhet / Meat cutting work and sustainability

Vogel, Kjerstin January 2015 (has links)
<p>QC 20150630</p>

Ebullition nucléée sur des surfaces ultra-polies : Influence de la topographie et du revêtement sur le phénomène de nucléation / Nucleate boiling on ultra-smooth surfaces : Influence of topography and coating on the nucleation phenomenon

Al Masri, Mostafa 07 July 2017 (has links)
An experimental study was conducted in order to understand the phenomenon of nucleation in boiling. This study was done on smooth surface or ultra-smooth surface made of aluminum, the working fluid is acetone. The analysis was realized as a function of the topography of the sample, roughness level, and as a function of nanocoating of the surface in order to modify the wettability. The study classed the sample in three categories, depending on the surface condition: the ultra-smooth surface, the ultra-smooth surface with defect and the rough surface. The good characteristics were obtained for the ultra-smooth sample with randomly distributed defects led to the fabrication of ultra-smooth sample with controlled artificial cavity. The results obtained with these latter samples present the best performances. A two-fold improvement over rough surfaces is observed, representing a substantial gain. Although it is the foundation of most theoretical models, the nucleus at the origin of the formation of a bubble has never been observed experimentally because its size exceeds the capacity of the traditional means of measurement. In this memory, an optical method - based on the resonance of plasmons on surfaces with a diffraction grating - is used to study this phenomenon. The experiments demonstrate the ability of this method to measure the temperature variation in the wall of the sample before boiling. Plasmon resonance measurements show that there is no change in the density of the fluid near the wall for overheating close to the boiling point. The nucleation is too fast to be measured. However, first nuclei of condensation were detected by this method, which is a very promising result.

Jet and coat of adaptive sustainable thin films

Singhal, Shrawan 13 November 2013 (has links)
Deposition of nanoscale thickness films is ubiquitous in micro- and nano-scale device manufacturing. Current techniques such as spin-coating and chemical vapor deposition are designed to create only uniform thin films, and can be wasteful in material consumption. They lack the ability to adaptively prescribe desired film thickness profiles. This dissertation presents a novel inkjet-based zero-waste polymer deposition process referred to as Jet and Coat of Adaptive Sustainable Thin Films or J-CAST. The core of this process is built on an experimentally validated multi-scale fluid evolution model, based on extensions of lubrication theory. This model involves a nano-scale fluid film sandwiched between two flat plates: a compliant superstrate and a rigid substrate, with spatial topography on both surfaces. Accounting for the flexural elasticity of the compliant superstrate, and describing the temporal evolution of the fluid film in the presence of different boundary conditions reveals that instead of seeking process equilibrium, non-equilibrium transients should be exploited to guide film deposition. This forms the first core concept behind the process. This concept also enables robust full-wafer processes for creation of uniform films as well as nanoscale films with prescribed variation of thickness at mm-scale spatial wavelengths. The use of inkjets enables zero-waste adaptive material deposition with the preferred drop volumes and locations obtained from an inverse optimization formulation. This forms the second core concept behind the process. The optimization is based on the prescribed film thickness profile and typically involves >100,000 integer parameters. Using simplifying approximations for the same, three specific applications have been discussed - gradient surfaces in combinatorial materials science and research, elliptical profiles with ~10km radius of curvature for X-ray nanoscopy applications and polishing of starting wafer surfaces for mitigation of existing nanotopography. In addition, the potential of extending the demonstrated process to high throughput roll-roll systems has also been mentioned by modifying the model to incorporate the compliance of the substrate along with that of the superstrate. / text

Investigation of New Concepts and Solutions for Silicon Nanophotonics

Wang, Zhechao January 2010 (has links)
Nowadays, silicon photonics is a widely studied research topic. Its high-index-contrast and compatibility with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology make it a promising platform for low cost high density integration. Several general problems have been brought up, including the lack of silicon active devices, the difficulty of light coupling, the polarization dependence, etc. This thesis aims to give new attempts to novel solutions for some of these problems. Both theoretical modeling and experimental work have been done. Several numerical methods are reviewed first. The semi-vectorial finite-difference mode solver in cylindrical coordinate system is developed and it is mainly used for calculating the eigenmodes of the waveguide structures employed in this thesis. The finite-difference time-domain method and beam propagation method are also used to analyze the light propagation in complex structures. The fabrication and characterization technologies are studied. The fabrication is mainly based on clean room facilities, including plasma assisted film deposition, electron beam lithography and dry etching. The vertical coupling system is mainly used for characterization in this thesis. Compared with conventional butt-coupling system, it can provide much higher coupling efficiency and larger alignment tolerance. Two novel couplers related to silicon photonic wires are studied. In order to improve the coupling efficiency of a grating coupler, a nonuniform grating is theoretically designed to maximize the overlap between the radiated light profile and the optical fiber mode. Over 60% coupling efficiency is obtained experimentally. Another coupler facilitating the light coupling between silicon photonic wires and slot waveguides is demonstrated, both theoretically and experimentally. Almost lossless coupling is achieved in experiments. Two approaches are studied to realize polarization insensitive devices based on silicon photonic wires. The first one is the use of a sandwich waveguide structure to eliminate the polarization dependent wavelength of a microring resonator. By optimizing the multilayer structure, we successfully eliminate the large birefringence in an ultrasmall ring resonator. Another approach is to use polarization diversity scheme. Two key components of the scheme are studied. An efficient polarization beam splitter based on a one-dimensional grating coupler is theoretically designed and experimentally demonstrated. This polarization beam splitter can also serve as an efficient light coupler between silicon-on-insulator waveguides and optical fibers. Over 50% coupling efficiency for both polarizations and -20dB extinction ratio between them are experimentally obtained. A compact polarization rotator based on silicon photonic wire is theoretically analyzed. 100% polarization conversion is achievable and the fabrication tolerance is relatively large by using a compensation method. A novel integration platform based on nano-epitaxial lateral overgrowth technology is investigated to realize monolithic integration of III-V materials on silicon. A silica mask is used to block the threading dislocations from the InP seed layer on silicon. Technologies such as hydride vapor phase epitaxy and chemical-mechanical polishing are developed. A thin dislocation free InP layer on silicon is obtained experimentally. / QC20100705

No. of bitstreams: 1 MoacirGS_TESE.pdf: 4771867 bytes, checksum: f93165e08f62a97944b6eed01b488995 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-02-10 / Among the industries, those that produce ceramic porcelain for use in construction industry and oil, during the exploration and production period, play an important role in the production of waste. Much research has been carried out both by academia and the productive sector, sometimes reintroducing them in the same production line that generated them, sometimes in areas unrelated to their generation, as in the production of concrete and mortar for the construction, for example, but each one in an isolated way. In this research, the aim is to study the combined incorporation of the waste drill cuttings of oil well and the residue of the polishing of porcelain, generated in the final stage of finishing of this product in a clay matrix, for the production of red pottery, specifically bricks, ceramic blocks and tiles. The clay comes from the municipality of S?o Gon?alo, RN, the drilling waste is from the Natal basin, in Rio Grande do Norte, and the residue of the polishing proceeds from a ceramic porcelain of the State of Para?ba. For this purpose, we used a mixture of a plastic clay with a non-plastic, in a ratio of 50% each, settling formulations with the addition of these two residues in this clay matrix. In the formulations, both residues were incorporated with a minimum percentage of 2.5% and maximum of 12.5%, varying from 2.5% each, in each formulation, which the sum of the waste be no more than 15%. It should be noted that the residue of the polishing of ceramic porcelain is a IIa class (not inert). The materials were characterized by XRF, XRD, TG, DTA, laser granulometry and the plasticity index. The technological properties of water absorption, apparent porosity, linear shrinkage of burning, flexural tensile strength and bulk density were evaluated after the sintering of the pieces to 850 ?C, 950 ?C and 1050 ?C, with a burning time of 3 hr, 3 hr and 30 minutes, and 3 hr and 50 minutes, respectively, with a heating rate of 10 ?C/minute, for all formulations and landing of 30 minutes. To better understand the influence of each residue and temperature on the evaluated properties, we used the factorial planning and its surfaces of response for the interpretation of the results. It was found that the temperature has no statistical significance at a 95% of reliability level in flexural tensile strength and that it decreases the water absorption and the porosity, but increases the shrinkage and the bulk density. The results showed the feasibility of the desired incorporation, but adjusting the temperature to each product and formulation, and that the temperatures of 850 ?C and 950 ?C were the one that responded to the largest number of formulations / A ind?stria de produ??o de porcelanatos para uso na constru??o civil e a do petr?leo, na fase de explora??o e produ??o, exercem um papel importante na produ??o de res?duos.
