This thesis deals about the history of textbooks taking as the object of analysis the functioning of the circuit that was organized around them on the second half of the 19th Century and the first decade of the 20th Century in the Amazonian school context. The number of studies that takes book history and didactic editions as objects of research has been increasing in Brazil. It is in the interior of that production context that this work is inserted. For the development our research, we have used Robert Darnton¿s model of analysis in regard to the communication circuit made by the books in the different phases of their existence: production, diffusion and consumption. Working with different sources, the thesis showed some faces of textbook circuit in the State of Amazonas zeroing on some aspects not very well known, such as: the subjects, the practices and devices that were involved in the dynamics of textbook circuit / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Impacto da mudança de estilo de vida no perfil pró-aterosclerótico em crianças e adolescentes com sobrepeso e obesidade / Impact of life style changing in the pro-atherosclerotic profile in children and adolescents with overweight and obesity

Geodete Batista Costa 08 January 2007 (has links)
This hypothesis was developed by reason of another research (COSTA G.B. Importance of the obesity increasing cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents. Aracaju, 2002. 109p.), in which pro-atherosclerotic profile was determined. At this current survey a controlled clinical trial was performed in fifty-two subjects, aged 10 to 18 years, all of them with IMC percentile > 85% and divided in two groups: Group IR, which received non-pharmacological multidisciplinary interventions for sixteen weeks and Group IU, which received only one intervention. There were no statistical differences in relation to: age, race and gender. There was significant interaction group x time (p<0,05) for: weight(Kg) (p<0,0001), height(m) (p=0,0083), body mass index(Kg/m2) (p=0,0053), percentage of body fat(%) (p=0,0022), waist circumference(cm) (p=0,0359), systolic blood pressure(mm Hg) (p=0,0021), diastolic blood pressure( mm Hg) (p=0,0004), TG(mg/dL) (p=0,029), Apo A-1(mg/dL) (p=0,001), fasting glucose(mg/dL) (p=0,018), IGFBP-3(mcg/mL) (p=0,005), TSH(uUi/mL) (p=0,045) and total testosterone(ng/mL) (p=0,030). However, there was not significant interaction group x time (P<0,05) for: heart rate (bpm) (p=0,6809), total cholesterol(mg/dL) (p=0,445), HDL-C(mg/dL) (p=0,726), LDL-C(mg/dL) (p=0,926), Apo B(mg/dL) (p=0,069), insuline(uU/mL) (p=0,866), HOMA-ir (p=0,088), IGF-1(nanog/mL) (p=0,424), cortisol(mcg/mL) (p=0,175), PCR-us(mg/mL) and estradiol(picog/mL) (p=0,507). There was low incidence of depression (23,0%), anxiety(15,4%) and alimentary compulsion(13,5%) on whole studied population. In regarding to nutrition and exercise, there are no statistic data because the aim was the education.

Design do livro tátil ilustrado: processo de criação centrado no leitor com deficiência visual e nas técnicas de produção gráfica da imagem e do texto / Design tactile illustrated book: creation process focused the reader with visual impairment and the graphic production techniques image and text

Elizabeth Romani 28 April 2016 (has links)
This research addresses the tactile illustrated book design, a work that enables the inclusion of the reader with visual impairments. The research is centered on how the message is expressed in the text and the image, from the understanding of typography, the layout, the language used in the illustration and mass production. The aim of the research is to discuss from the viewpoint of design the current production of this book category, on the understanding that the illustrated tactile book figure as a multi-sensory object that explores mainly the tactile perception, this being a feature also used to arouse the reader\'s curiosity in the literacy phase. For the reader, especially the blind, it is important to develop a tactile sensitivity in its childhood, therefore the physical book as a source of information is a fundamental tool of perceptual training. A great part of the production of illustrated tactile book is tied to knowledge originating from pedagogy, developed at the assistance centre for visually impaired and very often without the full involvement of the designer in the project. For this reason, in Brazil, books from different initiatives are similar and are characterized by traditional production, in accordance with didactic material for the blind. Recently, a new concept of multi-sensory books for children have been developed by a limited number of publishers, primarily European, exploring different finishing techniques in obtaining the tactile image. This research starts from the assumption that most of the images presented in the illustrated tactile books produced in Brazil are not interpreted by the blind. Will be presented the developments on this issue related to the understanding of image and text. Amongst them: the language of tactile drawings would be consonant with that of the blind reader? The embossing technique interferes in the reading process? The text assists in the understanding of the image? The rigid composition of the pages stimulate the reading? The absence of specific studies regarding the tactile illustrated book in the field of design and the strict bibliographic publications within the haptic reading led to the field survey: visits to specialized schools, visits to acessible museums and reading mediated by the target public. In addition, the analysis of six books, each one with different conceptions of tactile illustrations, was carried out, being three of them national: O Chapeuzinho vermelho, by Bia Villela, Abraço de urso, by Cláudia Cotes, Adélia sonhadora, by Lia Zatz; and three from abroad: Ruvidino in piscina, by Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano, Des vers de travers, by Anette Diesen and Petit souffle de vent, by Elisa Lodolo. The readings are meant to discuss the understanding of image, text and the book\'s composition. These books are analyzed based on references brought from graphic design and visual perception, with greater emphasis on the works of Bruno Munari and Rudolf Arnhein. Finally, it was produced a series of practical work of an experiential nature from narratives which intend to broaden the discussion about the process of designing a tactile illustrated book. The results demonstrated that the majority of tactile images present at Brazilian publications are not understood by blind readers - a set of associated factors corroborates to this result: the illustration language, the reproduction technique and absence of concrete in the relation between text and image.

Avaliação da eficácia da injeção da vacina de DNA HSP65 do Mycobacterium leprae em pacientes com estádio avançado de carcinoma epidermóide de cabeça e pescoço, em ensaio clínico de fase I/II / Effectiveness evaluation of the injection of the vaccine of DNA HSP65 of Mycobacterium leprae in patients with advanced stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in a phase I/II trial

Rodney Berzoini Smith 16 February 2007 (has links)
Resultados: Dos 21 pacientes, sete faleceram antes do término do protocolo. / Introduction: The squamous cell carcinoma of the head and advanced neck is an disease difficult to treat. Despite the advances in diagnosis and treatment in last the 30 years had not occurred major survival improvements. The treatment failure occurs mainly locorregionaly and recurrences frequently canot be rescued. immunotherapy has had encouraging results in the last years. Studies in animals had demonstrated the reduction of tumors with the DNA vaccine containing HSP-65 of the Mycobacterium leprae. In this study we evaluate the use of this protein in patients with avdanced head and neck carcinoma, stages II and IV without possibilities of curative treatment. Objectives: To test the viability of accomplishment of the intratumoral injection of DNA HSP65 in this group of patients, test its effectiveness through the comparative analysis of the volume, to verify transfeccion of the DNA injected and to see if the carried through treatment presented impact in the evolution of the patients. Patients and methods: 21 patients in 3 groups of doses 150,600 and 400µg of the vaccine of DNA HSP-65 of M leprae, through intratumoral applications guided by USG Doppler repeated 3 times every 21 days. CT scans before and after the treatment had been carried through, for evaluation of the tumoral response through the comparison of tumoral volume. We also did biopsis before and after the treatment, and the material was submitted the Rt-PCR in search of tranfeccion of the injected DNA. During the protocol the patients had been evalueted to rule observe adverse events that could be related to the medication. Results: Of 21 patients, seven died before the end of the protocol. In the 13 suitable for analysis, 4 partial responses and stability of the disese in 1 case had occurred. In 9 cases the tumors progressed. Two patients are still alive, with more than eight hundred days of the beginning of the protocol. The adverse events occurred mainly as an increase of local pain and edema. It was not possible to prove the transcription of the DNA injected in the Rt-PCR because of the occurrence of positive a false result. Conclusions: The application was secure in the dose of 400mcg . We saw reduction of tumoral volume in 5 of the 13 patients suitable for analysis, four partial responses and one stable disease. In the patients who had presented reduction of the tumoral volume there seems to be clinical benefit. It was not possible to prove the transfeccion of the injected DNA.

Transmissão e circulação de conhecimentos e políticas de publicação dos Kumua do noroeste amazônico / Transmission and circulation of knowledge and politics of publication of the Kumua from the Northwest Amazon

Samir Ricardo Figalli de Angelo 13 May 2016 (has links)
Based on fieldwork conducted among Desana writers who published their books in the collection Narradores Indígenas do Rio Negro, this research concerns forms of transmission and circulation of knowledge amongst the kumua (shamans) of the Northwest Amazon. It seeks to understand how the books come to be written, how this knowledge is circulated, how such publications are understood in a hierarchical society, and the politics of publication in the eyes of these Desana narrators. Finally, this leads to a discussion of the relationship between the politics of publishing, intellectual property rights and intellectual customary law. The analysis discusses the complexities confronting the narrators in the face of the copyright regime and concludes by proposing that intellectual property law should recognise the figure of the narrator-interpreter.

Performance Features of a Stationary Stochastic Novikov Engine

Schwalbe, Karsten, Hoffmann, Karl Heinz 22 January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
In this article a Novikov engine with fluctuating hot heat bath temperature is presented. Based on this model, the performance measure maximum expected power as well as the corresponding efficiency and entropy production rate is investigated for four different stationary distributions: continuous uniform, normal, triangle, quadratic, and Pareto. It is found that the performance measures increase monotonously with increasing expectation value and increasing standard deviation of the distributions. Additionally, we show that the distribution has only little influence on the performance measures for small standard deviations. For larger values of the standard deviation, the performance measures in the case of the Pareto distribution are significantly different compared to the other distributions. These observations are explained by a comparison of the Taylor expansions in terms of the distributions’ standard deviations. For the considered symmetric distributions, an extension of the well known Curzon–Ahlborn efficiency to a stochastic Novikov engine is given.

Enabling and Predisposing Factors for the Utilization of Preventive Dental Health Care in Migrants and Non-Migrants in Germany

Brzoska, Patrick, Erdsiek, Fabian, Waury, Dorothee 27 October 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Background: In many European countries including Germany, migrants utilize preventive services less frequently than the majority population. This is also true for the utilization of dental checkups. Little is known about which demographic, social, behavioral, and health-related factors influence the decision of migrants to seek preventive dental health care and how these factors differ from those in non-migrants. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of these factors among migrants and non-migrants residing in Germany. Methods: Data from cross-sectional national health surveys are used, providing information on preventive dental health behavior from n = 41,220 individuals, of which 15.0% are migrants. Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Services Use is the conceptual framework of the investigation. Multiple logistic regression models were applied to examine the role of different predisposing and enabling factors. Interaction terms were included in order to examine whether determinants differ between migrants and non-migrants. Average marginal effects (AMEs) are reported in addition to odds ratios (ORs) as measures of effect size which are robust against bias arising from unobserved heterogeneity. Results: Migrants are at an about 36% lower chance of utilizing regular dental checkups than non-migrants [OR = 0.64 (95% confidence interval, 95% CI: 0.61, 0.68); AME = −0.081 (95% CI = −0.093, −0.069)]. Differences are partly explained by the influence of demographic, social, behavioral, and health-related factors [adjusted OR = 0.69 (95% CI: 0.64, 0.73); AME = −0.065 (95% CI = −0.076, −0.053)]. Younger age, being male, lower socioeconomic status, a non-statutory health insurance, not living in a relationship, living in the Western part of Germany and in an urban setting, and poor limited social support were associated with a lower chance of utilizing regular dental checkups. Interaction effects could be observed for age and for the type of health insurance. Discussion: The study identifies different enabling and predisposing factors that are relevant for the utilization of dental checkups among the population in Germany, some of which differ between migrants and non-migrants. Differences are particularly pronounced for younger ages. This differs from findings on other preventive services where older migrants tend to be more disadvantaged. Additional explanatory factors such as barriers that migrants experience in the dental health care system need to be considered in order to implement patient-oriented services and to reduce disparities in access to dental prevention.

Using binocular rivalry to tag foreground sounds: Towards an objective visual measure for auditory multistability

Einhäuser, Wolfgang, Thomassen, Sabine, Bendixen, Alexandra 29 September 2017 (has links) (PDF)
In binocular rivalry, paradigms have been proposed for unobtrusive moment-by-moment readout of observers' perceptual experience (“no-report paradigms”). Here, we take a first step to extend this concept to auditory multistability. Observers continuously reported which of two concurrent tone sequences they perceived in the foreground: high-pitch (1008 Hz) or low-pitch (400 Hz) tones. Interstimulus intervals were either fixed per sequence (Experiments 1 and 2) or random with tones alternating (Experiment 3). A horizontally drifting grating was presented to each eye; to induce binocular rivalry, gratings had distinct colors and motion directions. To associate each grating with one tone sequence, a pattern on the grating jumped vertically whenever the respective tone occurred. We found that the direction of the optokinetic nystagmus (OKN)—induced by the visually dominant grating—could be used to decode the tone (high/low) that was perceived in the foreground well above chance. This OKN-based readout improved after observers had gained experience with the auditory task (Experiments 1 and 2) and for simpler auditory tasks (Experiment 3). We found no evidence that the visual stimulus affected auditory multistability. Although decoding performance is still far from perfect, our paradigm may eventually provide a continuous estimate of the currently dominant percept in auditory multistability.

Which Method Detects Foot Strike in Rearfoot and Forefoot Runners Accurately when Using an Inertial Measurement Unit?

Mitschke , Christian, Heß, Tobias, Milani, Thomas L. 02 October 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Accelerometers and gyroscopes are used to detect foot strike (FS), i.e., the moment when the foot first touches the ground. However, it is unclear whether different conditions (footwear hardness or foot strike pattern) influence the accuracy and precision of different FS detection methods when using such micro-electromechanical sensors (MEMS). This study compared the accuracy of four published MEMS-based FS detection methods with each other and the gold standard (force plate) to establish the most accurate method with regard to different foot strike patterns and footwear conditions. Twenty-three recreational runners (12 rearfoot and 11 forefoot strikers) ran on a 15-m indoor track at their individual running speed in three footwear conditions (low to high hardness). MEMS and a force plate were sampled at a rate of 3750 Hz. Individual accuracy and precision of FS detection methods were found which were dependent on running styles and footwear conditions. Most of the methods were characterized by a delay which generally increased from rearfoot to forefoot strike pattern and from high to low midsole hardness. It can be concluded that only one of the four methods can accurately determine FS in a variety of conditions.
